Panthers’ sack leader, former 1st-round pick headed to Eagles

The Eagles have successfully claimed OLB Charles Harris, who was waived by the Panthers on Monday.

On Monday, the Carolina Panthers waived outside linebacker Charles Harris. But on Tuesday, the veteran defender landed in an awfully good place.

As first reported by Zach Berman of PHLY, Harris has been successfully claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 9-2 NFC East leaders just learned that lost 15th-year pass rusher and team captain Brandon Graham to a season-ending triceps injury, one he sustained in Sunday night’s win over the Los Angeles Rams. Graham has recorded 3.5 sacks, tied for the third-highest total on the Eagles this season.

Harris, who has notched 3.0 sacks thus far, departed from the Panthers as one of their two leaders in the category. He is tied with defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson.

Carolina signed Harris, a former first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins, on Sept. 11. The 29-year-old went on to appear in nine games for the Panthers—also totaling 21 combined tackles and seven quarterback hits with six starts.

Eagles claim veteran edge rusher off waivers from Panthers

The Philadelphia Eagles are claiming veteran edge rusher Charles Harris off waivers from the Carolina Panthers

Zach Berman reports that the Eagles added more depth to the edge rusher position after Brandon Graham’s injury, claiming veteran pass rusher Charles Harris.

The Panthers waived Harris on Monday, Darin Gantt of the team’s official site reported.

The 29-year-old was picked up by Carolina ahead of a Week 2 loss to the Chargers.

Harris recorded 21 total tackles, including a team-leading 3.0 sacks, in nine games before being waived Monday. The Missouri product could add more depth to a unit with Graham out for the year and Bryce Huff on injured reserve.

Panthers have now cut their sack leader 3 different times this season

Being a team leader in sacks is normally a good thing, but maybe not so much if you’re a Panther in 2024.

The Carolina Panthers have continued an interesting trend.

On Monday, the team announced that they have parted ways with outside linebacker Charles Harris. The former first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins was waived to make room for the addition of cornerback Akayleb Evans, who was officially claimed off the wire by Carolina this afternoon.

Harris departs after having appeared in nine games. He totaled 29 combined tackles and 3.0 sacks, which is currently tied for the team lead alongside defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson.

So, yeah, the Panthers just got rid of their sack leader. And this decision would be kinda shocking . . . if they hadn’t done it twice before.

Today’s departure of Harris now marks the third different time that Carolina has sent off their sack leader in 2024. (Yup, that’s a real fact.)

They began by waiving second-year outside linebacker Eku Leota on Sept. 17. To that point, Leota’s 1.0 sack was a team-best through two weeks of play.

Then, on Oct. 8, they’d waive defensive lineman Jayden Peevy—who was pacing the unit with 1.5 sacks through five games.

Granted, Leota and Peevy aren’t exactly huge names. And while Harris is a bit more known, his role had lessened with the return of fellow ‘backer D.J. Wonnum.

Nonetheless, the bit goes on.

(Stay on your toes, A’Shawn.)

Panthers’ updated roster following Monday’s addition of CB Akayleb Evans

The Panthers swapped out their team leader in sacks for a former Vikings CB on Monday.

The Carolina Panthers swapped out their team leader in sacks for a former Minnesota Vikings fourth-round pick on Monday.

Coming into the fold will be cornerback Akayleb Evans, who has amassed 17 starts over 32 NFL games since 2022. And on the way out is veteran outside linebacker Charles Harris.

Here’s an updated look at the team’s 53-man roster following the moves:

Panthers part ways with former 1st-round pick, team leader in sacks

The Panthers have announced the corresponding move to their addition of CB Akayleb Evans.

The Carolina Panthers have announced not only their addition of cornerback Akayleb Evans, but also their corresponding move to make room for it.

To open a spot for Evans on the 53-man roster, the team has waived outside linebacker Charles Harris. The 29-year-old veteran has appeared in nine games for the Panthers this season.

A two-time Second-team All-SEC honoree at the University of Missouri, Harris was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins. He’d go on to split his first eight pro campaigns between the Dolphins, the Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions—amassing 16.5 sacks over 90 games.

Carolina signed Harris back on Sept. 11. He departs the roster in a tie for the team lead in sacks (three) with defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson.

Harris became dispensable for the Panthers in light of the return of fellow outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum, who has taken over starting duties for the last two weeks.
