ESPN’s FPI gives Chargers 1.1% chance of winning Super Bowl

The model isn’t too high on the Chargers.

So you’re saying there’s a chance?

ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) gave the Chargers a 1.1% chance of winning the Super Bowl next year and an 18.9% chance of winning the division over the Chiefs, Raiders, and Broncos.

However, there is hope of making the playoffs, as the model gives Los Angeles a 45% chance to play beyond the regular season.

Overall, the Bolts are 18th overall, which is ahead of the Bears and one below the Steelers.

The model isn’t particularly high on the Chargers due to losing Keenan Allen and Mike Williams and their defense, which ranked 29th in EPA last season. Even with the pairing of Jim Harbaugh and Justin Herbert, it’s still below average.

I do feel like it will be a tall task to make it to the Super Bowl, let alone dethrone Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid of the AFC West title. But making the playoffs is a strong possibility, given Harbaugh taking over, the top-end talent and a relatively easy schedule.

Very early look at Chargers’ odds for Super Bowl LVIII

Taking a look at what Vegas makes out of the Chargers making it to the Super Bowl next year.

It’s Super Bowl week…but not for the Chargers.

Instead, it’s that time when fans reminisce on what could be if their favorite team were in the Super Bowl and begin looking towards next year to get an early idea of what sportsbooks make out of their squad making it.

For the Bolts, they are the seventh overall favorite to win Super Bowl LVIII and fourth among AFC teams at +2200, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.

The teams that have better odds than Los Angeles are the Chiefs (+550), Bills (+650), 49ers (+700), Eagles (+800), Bengals (+900) and Cowboys (+1400).

The Chargers are coming off a decent season that saw them finish with a 10-7 record in the regular season and make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2018 despite dealing with injuries to key players throughout the season.

Los Angeles is off to a great start with their remodeling of the team with the hiring of Kellen Moore to be the offensive coordinator. Now, how they reconstruct their roster will be polarizing.

As it stands, the Chargers are in one of the worst salary cap situations in the league, and they will have to make some moves to free up some money to extend Justin Herbert, sign free agents and their rookie draft class.

If Tom Telesco is somehow able to hit a home run this offseason, Los Angeles’ odds could take a dip.

Troy Reeder sees glimpses of a Super Bowl champion in the 2022 Chargers

LB Troy Reeder knows the Chargers are built to contend in 2022.

Los Angeles is built to contend in 2022, and one of their new acquisitions said Tuesday that the team reminds him of the championship-caliber one that shares a stadium with the Chargers.

Linebacker Troy Reeder, a free agent signee from the 2021 Super Bowl-winning Rams squad, told the media:

“I was blessed to be around a group that did do it the right way every day [last season]. I see so many similarities in that here. I think this team has what it takes. We just have to put it all together.”

It’s a glowing review from one of the few players with championship experience on the current Chargers roster. Only Reeder, linebacker Kyle Van Noy, and cornerback JC Jackson have a Super Bowl ring to their names (Van Noy has 2). All three are, of course, new to the Chargers this season, the end result of Brandon Staley’s emphasis on finding players who have summited the mountaintop before:

“Those guys know about the journey to get there, what it takes on a day-to-day basis, and that mindset that you need to have every single day.”

Of course, every team thinks they’re capable of winning a championship in August before any preseason games have even been played. For the Chargers, it may even seem premature to outside onlookers that players and fans are talking about a Super Bowl run.

After all, neither Staley nor quarterback Justin Herbert has even been to the playoffs, while the other teams in a highly competitive AFC have reloaded. Making the big stage in Glendale will require surviving a quarterback gauntlet of at least Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow, with Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson having solid cases.

The 2021 Rams knew this all too well. After beating Kyler Murray and the Cardinals as the four seed on the opening weekend of the playoffs, Los Angeles had to hang on versus Tom Brady’s supercharged Buccaneers squad while narrowly avoiding a duel with Aaron Rodgers. Toppling the 49ers in the NFC championship was no easy feat, even if Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t the same caliber of signal caller.

So what makes the Bolts more likely than other teams to make that leap?

According to Reeder, it comes down to leadership across all three phases. On offense, Herbert leads the charge as a quarterback who can “put up any number of points in any given game.” Defensively, Derwin James, Joey Bosa, and Khalil Mack lead a unit that “can potentially shut out any team.” On special teams, long snapper Josh Harris is an All-Pro caliber player with ten years of NFL experience.

“The pieces are there,” said Reeder. But whether or not the Chargers are in a position to hoist the Lombardi in February will come down to “doing it week in and week out…staying healthy and peaking at the right time.”

4 reasons why Chargers will make a deep run in 2022

Highlighting why the Chargers will win the AFC West for the first time since 2009 and make a run in the playoffs.

After finishing 9-8 and coming up just short of the playoffs in 2021, many believe that the Chargers are equipped to make some noise this upcoming season, with Super Bowl LVII being the ceiling.

Los Angeles will again have stiff competition with the Chiefs, who are seeking their seventh-straight divisional crown, but also revamped Broncos and Raiders squads.

However, there are reasons to believe that the Bolts can come out on top of the AFC West and make some noise in the playoffs.

Here are four reasons why the Bolts will make a deep run in 2022:

What are Chargers’ current odds to win Super Bowl LVII?

The Los Angeles Chargers are receiving favorable odds.

The Chargers selected eight players in the 2022 NFL draft, bolstering the offensive and defensive line, getting faster in the secondary, and finding a complement to Austin Ekeler.

After Los Angeles stacked deck, how did that impact their odds of winning Super Bowl LVII?

At the moment, L.A. is tied for the fourth-best odds to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next February, along with the Broncos and 49ers at +1500, per Tipico Sportsbook.

That means if you bet $100 on the Chargers to win the Super Bowl, you would take home $1500 if the team won it all.

The Bills have the best odds at +600, followed by the Buccaneers at +700. The Packers, Chiefs, and Rams are tied at +1000

After making upgrades this offseason, specifically on the defensive side of the ball with notables J.C. Jackson, Khalil Mack and Sebastian Joseph-Day, Justin Herbert, Brandon Staley, and the Bolts are primed to contend for a Super Bowl.

Checking in on Chargers’ Super Bowl odds after first wave of free agency

The Los Angeles Chargers’ Super Bowl LVII odds improved following the first wave of free agency.

In the first wave of free agency, the Chargers upgraded their roster with the additions of Khalil Mack, J.C. Jackson, Sebastian Joseph-Day, Austin Johnson, and Gerald Everett.

After these signings, it improved Los Angeles’ odds of Super Bowl LVII, as they went from 20-to-1 (+2000) to 15-to-1 (+1500), which ties them with the Cowboys and Browns, according to Tipico Sportsbook.

The teams with better odds are the 49ers, Broncos (+1300), Rams, Packers (+1000), Buccaneers, Chiefs (+750), and Bills (+650).

The Bolts still have some spendings to make another signing or two, with $7.9 million in available salary-cap space, according to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.

If the Chargers nail the draft next month, their odds should improve even more.

Reddit user comes up crazy theory that Chargers fans will love

A Reddit user forecasted the outcome of the Los Angeles Chargers 2021 season by using some interesting context.

The regular season is still months away, and we have no idea how the new campaign will shape up for all 32 teams.

But what if there is someone who knows something already that we don’t know when it comes to the Lombardi Trophy winner for the upcoming season?

A Reddit user by the name of “Herbertstan” made a post that forecasts the Chargers winning Super Bowl LVI. How does he do it? By comparing Los Angeles’ standing to the Buccaneers team that most recently won it all.

Here’s how it goes down:

Tampa Bay finished the 2019 season with a 7-9 record, while the Bolts finished 7-9 in 2020.

The Bucs selected an offensive tackle with the No. 13 overall selection in the 2020 NFL draft, with that being Tristan Wirfs. The Chargers held the No. 13 pick in this year’s draft, where they went on to select an offensive tackle in Rashawn Slater.

In the second-round, Tampa Bay drafted a defensive back who was named after his All-Pro father, with that being Antoine Winfield, Jr. This year, Los Angeles took Asante Samuel, Jr. in Round 2, another son of an NFL great.

Finally, the Buccaneers won the title in Raymond James Stadium, which is their home field. Where will next year’s Super Bowl be held? SoFi Stadium, home of the Chargers and Rams.

Conspiracy theories are to be taken with a large grain of salt, and this is another one that falls under that category. But the person who came up with this hypothesis certainly has a brilliant mind.

Los Angeles has the talent on the roster to make it happen, but only time will tell if it actually comes to fruition.

What are Chargers’ odds to win Super Bowl LV?

The Los Angeles Chargers rank near the middle of the pack to win Super Bowl 55.

Heading into the offseason about a year ago, the Los Angeles Chargers had the sixth-best odds to win Super LIV.

The team fell well short of those odds and many people’s expectations, finishing with an underwhelming 5-11 record. Injuries, a mid-season coaching change and in-game woes that saw nine of their 11 losses be determined by seven points or less hindered them.

With the 2019 season officially over, it’s time to look forward to 2020. At the moment, the Bolts are tied with the Las Vegas Raiders with the 15th-best odds to win Super Bowl LV, per BetMGM.

It’s not all that surprising that L.A. ranks near the middle of the pack. Even though they still possess a talented roster, there are a slew of key players that will be free agents, including quarterback Philip Rivers.

It’s hard to gauge where the team will stand when the man under center remains to be seen. It could be Philip Rivers (if he’s re-signed), Tyrod Taylor, a rookie or even a free agent.

Not only that, but the Chargers also need to address the offensive line, wide receiver, cornerback and defensive tackle corps to ensure they have enough ammo to go toe-to-toe with AFC West rival and Super Bowl champs, the Kansas City Chiefs.

If Los Angeles nails their offseason, those odds will likely increase prior to the 2020 regular season.
