NFL betting: Point spread, over/under for Chargers vs. Browns in Week 5

The Chargers are three-point favorites entering Week 5.

The Los Angeles Chargers (2-2) meet the Cleveland Browns (2-2) in Week 5 of the 2022 regular season.

Here are the betting odds for the matchup, per Tipico Sportsbook:

Spread Moneyline Total Points
Los Angeles Chargers -3 -155 O 47.5
-108
Cleveland Browns +3 +130 U 47.5
-112

In Week 4, the Chargers took care of business against the Texans, winning by the score of 34-24.

Los Angeles looked good, scoring on five of its first six possessions to build a 27-7 lead by halftime. Houston cut the deficit to three with over eight minutes remaining, but Austin Ekeler, who had three touchdowns, put the game to bed with a 14-yard touchdown catch.

Meanwhile, the Browns are coming off a loss to the Falcons, 23-20.

Cleveland did a great job on the ground against Atlanta, averaging 5.1 yards per carry. But the offense sputtered in crunch time, and then it gave up 202 yards rushing, most of which came at the end of the third quarter. Two back-to-back field goals by Younghoe Koo sealed the deal.

The last time the Chargers and Browns met was last season. Los Angeles won the high-scoring affair, 47-42.

Sunday’s contest will begin at 10:00 a.m. PT and be broadcasted on CBS.

Checking in on Chargers’ Super Bowl odds after first wave of free agency

The Los Angeles Chargers’ Super Bowl LVII odds improved following the first wave of free agency.

In the first wave of free agency, the Chargers upgraded their roster with the additions of Khalil Mack, J.C. Jackson, Sebastian Joseph-Day, Austin Johnson, and Gerald Everett.

After these signings, it improved Los Angeles’ odds of Super Bowl LVII, as they went from 20-to-1 (+2000) to 15-to-1 (+1500), which ties them with the Cowboys and Browns, according to Tipico Sportsbook.

The teams with better odds are the 49ers, Broncos (+1300), Rams, Packers (+1000), Buccaneers, Chiefs (+750), and Bills (+650).

The Bolts still have some spendings to make another signing or two, with $7.9 million in available salary-cap space, according to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.

If the Chargers nail the draft next month, their odds should improve even more.

Chargers open up 2021 season as slight underdogs to Washington Football Team

With Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Washington Football Team awaiting them, the Los Angeles Chargers have opened up as slight underdogs in Week 1.

The Los Angeles Chargers (0-0) open up the 2021 regular season with a matchup against the Washington Football Team (0-0) at FedExField.

Per Tipico Sportsbook, the Football Team is favored -108 on the money line (bet $108 to win $100). The Chargers, however, come in at -112, so oddsmakers believe this will be a close contest.

The Washington Football Team will look to repeat as NFC East champions, with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick under center. Fitzpatrick will have a decent offensive line and a few play-makers at his disposal, most notably running back Antonio Gibson and wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

On the other side of the ball is where the team is at its best, which will  provide a tough test for reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year, Justin Herbert, who shattered a multitude of records in 2020.

Herbert could be in for an even bigger season, even with new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi calling the shots, given the fact that he will have all key skill players from last year returning, along with the additions of tight end Jared Cook and wide receiver Josh Palmer.

Most importantly, Herbert should have plenty of time to distribute the wealth to those guys, with a revamped offensive line that features All-Pro center Corey Linsley, guards Matt Feiler, Oday Aboushi and first-round pick Rashawn Slater.

Los Angeles will look to make a deep run under head coach Brandon Staley after finishing under .500 the past two seasons, and it all starts on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 10:00 am PT.

Why you should place bet for Chargers’ Derwin James to win Comeback Player of the Year

Place your money on the All-Pro safety.

‘Tis the season for early betting for the upcoming NFL season.

For the Chargers, quarterback Justin Herbert has decent odds to win Most Valuable Player and head coach Brandon Staley is viewed as a favorite to win Coach of the Year.

However, there’s an individual award that should intrigue sports bettors, as safety Derwin James has the fourth-best odds to win Comeback Player of the Year at +2000, per BetMGM.

That means if you place a $100 bet and James wins the award, you pocket $2000.

James currently sits behind QB Dak Prescott (+180), RB Saquon Barkley (+500), RB Christian McCaffrey (+600), QB Joe Burrow (+800), EDGE Nick Bosa (+800) and QB Carson Wentz (+800).

After missing the past two seasons with knee injuries, James is fully healthy and has looked great in the early stages of preparation for the 2021 season.

It only took his rookie season to establish himself as one of the league’s best safeties and defensive players as a whole, in which he recorded 105 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions and 13 passes defended en route to being selected first team All-Pro.

Like Brandon Staley said at his media presser this past week, when James is out on the field, the team’s chances of winning increase by a whole bunch. That just goes to show how much of a difference-maker James is, and his versatile skillset in the new defense should only benefit him more.

The do-it-all defender has range to cover at deep safety, his speed allows him to cover a slot receiver and his size and physicality allows him to cover the best tight ends and move up to the line of scrimmage as a box safety and make an impact against the run or as a blitzer.

Given how coveted James is as a player and how highly anticipated his return is, if he can stay healthy and return to form and produce like he did in Year 1 which ultimately leads to a trip to the playoffs, he will be a hot candidate to win the prestigious award.

The bottom line is that if you’re a bettor, this is one you should place now rather than later into the season when those odds will increase.

Where Chargers’ Super Bowl LVI odds stand after 2021 draft

The Los Angeles Chargers upgraded their roster this offseason. How did it impact their odds of winning Super Bowl LVI?

The Chargers selected nine players in the 2021 NFL draft, with the most notables being offensive tackle Rashawn Slater and cornerback Asante Samuel, Jr.

After Los Angeles stacked deck, how did that impact their odds of winning Super Bowl LVI?

At the moment, L.A. is tied for the eighth-best odds to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next February, along with the Cardinals, Dolphins, Patriots and Seahawks at +3000, per BetMGM.

That means if you bet $100 on the Chargers to win the Super Bowl, you would take home $3,000 if the team won it all.

Even after making upgrades on both sides of the ball to an already talented roster that includes star quarterback Justin Herbert, it’s hard to gauge how Brandon Staley will do as a first-time head coach.

Plus, Los Angeles has a proven history of seeing injuries occur to key players prior to and during the regular season.

If L.A. can win games under Staley and stay healthy throughout the duration of the year, those odds of them winning it all will increase.

2021 NFL draft betting: Odds favor Chargers taking offensive lineman in Round 1

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco hasn’t taken an offensive lineman in the first-round since 2013.

The Chargers’ most pressing need on the roster is the left tackle position.

Many, including oddsmakers, believe that’s the direction that general manager Tom Telesco will go when Los Angeles is on the clock at No. 13.

According to BetMGM, the odds for the most likely positions are as follows:

  • Offensive lineman +110 (Bet $100 to win $110)
  • Cornerback +400 (Bet $100 to win $400)
  • Wide receiver +450
  • Defensive lineman +500
  • Linebacker +1200

Since the start of the pre-draft process, I have said that L.A. needs to take the team’s left tackle of the future with their first pick now that they have their franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert.

They’re in a position where they will be able to land one, with the likely options being Northwestern’s Rashawn Slater, Virginia Tech’s Christian Darrisaw, Texas’ Samuel Cosmi and Oklahoma State’s Teven Jenkins.

Telesco has a track record of banking on mid- late-round tackles, but the fact that none of them have panned out should be a learning lesson that he should not wait to draft one.

If Telesco sticks to his guns, he could consider South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn to give head coach Brandon Staley a dynamic defender in the secondary or supply Herbert with another pass-catching weapon with someone like Alabama’s DeVonta Smith or Jaylen Waddle.

My prediction is that Telesco will realize that he has to construct a roster that will put Herbert in position for long-term success, and he chooses to protect his blindside with one of the top linemen.

Chargers open up as 7-point underdogs vs. Buccaneers

The Los Angeles Chargers are hoping to pull off the upset against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) have opened up as seven-point underdogs to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1) in Week 4 of the 2020 regular season, per BetMGM.

The Chargers dropped their second consecutive game to the Carolina Panthers last weekend, 21-16. The Bolts clawed their way back in, and had the hook-and-ladder play between WR Keenan Allen and RB Austin Ekeler happened, it would’ve been a different outcome.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneers won their second straight game, defeating the Denver Broncos by the score of 28-10. Led by QB Tom Brady’s three-touchdown performance and the defensive dominance, which featured six sacks, Tampa Bay took care of Denver with ease.

Sunday’s matchup will begin at 10:00 a.m. PT and will be televised on CBS.
