CFL all-star Reggie Begelton signs futures deal with Packers

One of the top WRs in the CFL signed a futures deal with the Packers.

The Green Bay Packers signed one of the best players in the CFL to a futures deal.

The team announced the signing of receiver and CFL all-star Reggie Begelton (6-0, 200) to a deal that will ensure he’s on the Packers’ 90-man roster this coming offseason.

Fullback Elijah Wellman (6-1, 241) also signed a futures deal with the Packers.

Begelton, the all-time leading receiver at Lamar University, caught 102 passes for 1,444 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL in 2019. He finished second in the league in receptions and third in receiving yards and touchdowns.

Begelton was one of 27 CFL all-stars and a unanimous selection as the team’s MVP this past season.

The Stampeders released Begelton from his CFL contract so he could pursue NFL opportunities. He worked out for several teams but decided to sign with the Packers.

Begelton, who turns 27 in August, will join an evolving receiver group that could feature several additions this coming offseason.

Wellman is an undrafted free agent from West Virginia. He spent time with the Washington Redskins during the offseasons in 2018 and 2019.

Jaguars QB coach Scott Milanovich lands HC job for Edmonton Eskimos of CFL

Jags QB coach Scott Milanovich will be heading back to the CFL once the team’s season is over.

It’s a very strong possibility a lot of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ current coaching staff won’t be returning next season, but at least one member from the group already has worked lined up. Quarterbacks coach Scott Milanovich accepted an offer to go back to the Canadian football League and serve as the head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos when the Jags’ season is up.

Milanovich, 46, coached in the CFL before landing with the Jags in 2017. His most notable stop was with the Toronto Argonauts, where he was the head coach from 2012-16. In his first season there he was able to win the league’s equivalent to a Super Bowl, the Grey Cup, and was named the league’s head coach of the year as a result. Prior to that, he spent 2007-11 with the Montreal Alouettes as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for them. He also had stints with the Rhein Fire and Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe and the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders.

As a player, Milanovich was a backup quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three years (1996-99) to start his career. After his NFL career, he became a football journeyman playing with NFL Europe’s Berlin Thunder (2000), the XFL’s Los Angeles Xtreme (2001), the AFL’s Tampa Bay Storm (2002) and the Stampeders (2003).

Since joining the Jags’ staff, Milanovich was able to coach up Blake Bortles to an AFC Championship loss to the New England Patriots in 2017 and coached current starter Gardner Minshew II. Under his tutelage, Minshew was able to win six Rookie of the Week awards, a Rookie of the Month award in September and surpass the Jags’ rookie record for passing touchdowns (15). He also served as the Jags’ play caller last season when they fired offensive coordinator Nate Hackett.

Jonathan Kongbo released by Winnipeg to pursue NFL opportunities

Jonathan Kongbo to pursue NFL opportunities.

WINNIPEG — Just days after winning the 2019 Grey Cup, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have released defensive lineman and former Tennessee football player Jonathan Kongbo.

Kongbo’s departure was not for poor performance, as it was a pre-arranged deal after he was taken with the fifth overall pick in the 2019 Canadian League Draft in June.

The former Vol was let go to pursue an opportunity to play in the National Football League.

“When we selected Jonathan in last year’s CFL Draft, he chose to sign with our organization rather than wait a season to continue training,” Winnipeg general manager Kyle Walters said in a statement to the league. “This agreement came with the understanding that if he received any NFL interest, we would work with him to pursue those interests.

“We wish him the best and certainly will welcome his return if nothing comes to fruition in this regard.”

Kongbo played in 12 regular-season games and also appeared in the playoffs. He totaled 12 tackles and one sack this season.

Former Saints players Delvin Breaux, Adam Bighill competing for CFL Grey Cup

Former Saints Delvin Breaux and Adam Bighill will compete in the 2019 CFL Grey Cup between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers

[jwplayer WU2Y8Ngc]

The Canadian Football League is set to kick off its 2019 Grey Cup championship game, and two former New Orleans Saints players are set to compete for it — on opposing sidelines. Former Saints cornerback Delvin Breaux is leading the Hamilton Tiger-Cats while ex-Saints linebacker Adam Bighill is running the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defense.

While it’s a fascinating lens to view the game through, it’s great to see both players having success after their time with the Saints came to an end. A series of injuries forced Breaux, a New Orleans native, to return to the CFL. He’s since signed a three-year contract extension with Hamilton after joining Bighill on the 2018 CFL West All-Stars team. He’s still an ardent Saints fan to this day, and has recorded 26 tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble in 10 games.

As for Bighill: he went back to the CFL unsatisfied with his Saints experience, having spent extended time on the practice squad before getting a handful of snaps with the special teams units in his first year with New Orleans. His performance in 2018 earned the award for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player, as well as a three-year contract extension that made him the CFL’s highest-paid player on defense. Bighill has appeared in 15 games this year, racking up 61 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

Saints fans interested in watching Saturday’s Grey Cup finale between Breaux’s Ticats and Bighill’s Bombers can tune into ESPN2 at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT. It’s a shame that neither Breaux nor Bighill had enduring, productive careers with New Orleans, but it’s terrific to see them still scuceeding.

Prediction

Tiger-Cats 32, Blue Bombers 26

Moneyline (ML)

The Tiger-Cats (-176) are relatively large favorites over the Blue Bombers (+145) in the championship game. Hamilton went 6-3 on the road over the regular season and Winnipeg was 3-6 before winning back-to-back road playoff games. The two sides will now meet at a neutral site.

Back HAMILTON to end its Grey Cup drought and extend Winnipeg’s by another year.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Hamilton to win would return a profit of $5.68.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Both teams have been excellent ATS through the postseason. The Ti-Cats are 13-4 overall ATS and 6-2 on the road. The Bombers were 14-6 overall and 5-4 on the road, and covered as underdogs in each of their two road playoff games.

Stick with the TIGER-CATS, who’re laying -3.5 points at -110.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 51.5 (-110). The Bombers had played to four straight Overs before falling short of the projected total last week against the Roughriders. The Tiger-Cats went 2-2-1 against the O/U over five games since the beginning of October.

Four of the last five Grey Cups have fallen short of this year’s projected total, but Sunday is calling for clear skies and temperatures above freezing in Calgary. The runways will be clear.

The Tennessee Volunteers basketball program — both men and women — remain unbeaten after after the guys handily defeated the Alabama State Hornets last night, keeping Vols athletics on its current roll. Coming up this weekend, the football team will get its chance to continue the winning trend when it faces the Missouri Tigers on the road, and the swimming and diving team hosts the Tennessee Invitational over the course of three days beginning today. There is plenty on tap as the week winds down for Vols fans, and the teams are ready.

Vols are practicing at their best

The biggest news on the gridiron has been the Vols’ preparation for what amounts to a must-win game if Tennessee wants to keep its bowl hopes alive. According to head coach Jeremy Pruitt, the boys are putting in the work, and it appears to be paying off.

“The last two days have been our best practices all year here in the season and I like the way we practice. Our guys seem to be gaining some confidence, and I’m talking about confidence in what they’re doing. That comes with age and experience. We’ve got to take it from the practice field and take it to a Saturday.”

Pruitt added that the bye week allowed players who have been banged up a little more time to get back up to speed.

“We got guys that our banged up from the last game, but having a week off we tried to get them ready to play, but at the same time use common sense. There might be a couple of guys that might be a little bit limited, but we should have everybody ready to play.”

This news should be extremely encouraging to Vols fans, as the team appears to be peaking as the season wanes. Hopefully, the fruits of UT’s labors will be reaped on Saturday.

Condredge Holloway: UT’s two-time Grey Cup champion

Condredge Holloway: UT’s two-time Grey Cup champion

[jwplayer OSBA6oIu-er0jUifI]

KNOXVILLE — The 107th Grey Cup will be awarded to the 2019 Canadian Football League champion Sunday night in Calgary.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will play the Winnipeg Blue Bomber.

The Bombers have former University of Tennessee player Jonathan Kongbo, who was the fifth overall pick in the 2019 CFL Draft despite suffering a severe knee injury during his final season on Rocky Top.

Kongbo and Edmonton’s Kendal Vickers made deep runs in the CFL playoffs in 2019.

They are the latest former Vols to play in the CFL along with the likes of Jimmy Streater, Johnny Majors, Jonathan Hefney and others.

But no former Vol had a more stellar CFL career than Condredge Holloway.

Holloway, the first-ever African-American quarterback to start in a Southeastern Conference game and a baseball All-American for the Big Orange, had a stellar career on the gridiron for the Vols and was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 12th round of the 1975 NFL Draft.

But Holloway took his talent north of the border.

In Canada, Holloway was a three-time CFL East Division All-Star and a 1982 CFL All-Star. He was also named the league’s Most Outstanding Player in 1982.

He was inducted into the CFL’s Hall of Fame in 1999 after playing for the Ottawa Roughriders (1975-80), Toronto Argonauts (1981-86) and the British Columbia Lions (1987).

Holloway was a Grey Cup Champion in 1976 with the Roughriders and the Argos in 1983.

Jonathan Kongbo, Blue Bombers advance to Grey Cup game

2019 Grey Cup.

SASKATCHEWAN — In his first year of professional football, former University of Tennessee player Jonathan Kongbo will get the chance to play for a championship.

Kongbo, a defensive end for the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers, will play in the league’s 107th Grey Cup game in Calgary on Sunday.

Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. (EST) at McMahon Stadium.

Kongbo recorded two tackles in the Blue Bombers’ 20-13 West Division Finals victory over the host Roughriders in Saskatchewan Sunday afternoon.

Winnipeg will take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Grey Cup.

Kongbo, the fifth overall pick in the 2019 CFL Draft in June played in 12 regular-season games. He also appeared in both of his team’s playoff games.

The former Vol had 12 tackles and one sack for Winnipeg during the regular season. The Blue Bombers made the playoffs with an 11-7 record and won a pair of postseason games on the road.

Top Canadian Football League prospects for the Browns to consider

The CFL has some prospects the Cleveland Browns should consider when that league wraps after the playoffs

The Canadian Football League is winding down and the CFL Semifinals will occur this weekend. NFL talent can be found anywhere and the CFL is often times a great place for unpolished talent to get ready for the big league and a perfect example is Oakland Raiders safety, Erik Harris, who snagged two interceptions last Thursday.

Harris was a raw defensive tweener prospect out of division two, California (PA), but had a ton of success refining his game with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from 2013-2015. One of Harris’ former Hamilton teammates is another recognizable name in Delvin Breux, who started for the New Orleans Saints from 2015-2017.

The list of successful NFL players spending time in the CFL is longer than most realize and it includes former Browns, Andrew Hawkins and Jeff Garcia. Scouring CFL rosters is something every NFL team does every season in hopes of finding players ranging from quarterbacks like Doug Flutie, Warren Moon and Joe Theismann to defensive studs like Cameron Wake and Brandon Browner. Below are the top five guys the Cleveland Browns should have on their radar this season.

Tunde Adeleke, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, DB, 5-10, 208 pounds

A true Canadian, growing up in Ottawa, Adeleke was selected in the third round of the CFL Draft in 2017 by the Calgary Stampeders, but has really played at an elite All-CFL level for Hamilton. Adeleke has tallied career highs with 57 tackles and two interceptions this season and offenses were doing their best to avoid him. He also plays special teams both as a defender and as a returner. Still only 25 years old, Adeleke is CFL fast running a 4.58 40-yard dash, but that is a limitation in the NFL.

Adeleke did crank out 16 reps of 225 pounds at the CFL combine and that would have been an impressive number for defensive backs in the NFL combine. He plays faster than he times and has decent size, it is a reasonable expectation for Adeleke to provide depth in the defensive backfield and play a role on special teams.

Dashaun Amos, Calgary Stampeders, CB, 6-0, 193 pounds

Amos briefly got a shot with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina in 2017, but was released after playing in all four preseason games. After his first NFL stint, Amos signed with Calgary halfway through the next season and spent most of his 2018 on the practice squad. This season was a breakthrough for Amos as his first full CFL season translated to him being named a CFL All-Star after recording 42 tackles and five interceptions.

Amos would have likely been up for the CFL Most Outstanding Rookie Award if not for playing two games during his shortened 2018. Amos is only 25 and plays the defensive halfback position in the CFL, which is responsible for covering the slotback. This is a tough job as the slotback typically moves with a forward motion before the snap, which should make him prepared for nickel or slot corner duties in the NFL.

Patrick Levels, Montreal Alouettes, DB, 5-11, 187 pounds

The former Baylor defender was never given an opportunity in the NFL, because he is the definition of a tweener as Baylor utilized Levels at their “Bear” position, which is a linebacker/safety hybrid. Levels lacks the size to play linebacker, but also lacks the athleticism to play defensive back. Levels started his CFL career in 2017 with the Calgary Stampeders but didn’t shine until this season, which was his first in Montreal where he was all over the field with 86 tackles and five sacks. He has clearly gotten better and despite his limitations, he flows to the ball effectively. At the very worst, you have a semi-versatile grinder who can contribute on special teams.

Winston Rose, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, DB, 6-0, 171 pounds

Another defensive backfield on this list, Rose is only in his third full CFL season and Winnipeg is already his fourth CFL team after playing briefly in Ottawa in 2017 and British Columbia in 2018. He played at a high level in college for New Mexico State after arriving via junior college and was able to have cups of coffee for the Los Angeles Rams and Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2016. Rose was signed as a late-season addition for the Toronto Argonauts and became a full-time CFL starter last season for B.C. This season Rose has elevated his game to earn All-CFL honors with 58 tackles and 9 interceptions.

Rose has always had supreme athleticism as evidenced by his 4.38 forty yard dash time at his pro day and many thought he would have been a late draft pick, but he was too raw to maintain a roster spot in 2016. Rose looks like he has grown a ton and should at the very least provide a spark on special teams and has enough skills to potentially grow into a contributing cornerback with ideal athleticism and ball skills.

Marcus Sayles, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, CB, 5-10, 180 pounds

There are more than a few young defensive backs in the CFL that had essentially zero technical skills coming out of college, but after a few years have developed some impressive tools and Sayles fits that description.

After going undrafted in 2017, Sayles spent some time with the Buffalo Bills and ended the season with the Los Angeles Rams. He was released prior to the start of the 2018 season and that is when Winnipeg snatched him up. Like Rose, Sayles has earned All-CFL honors and has a ton of physical tools to at the very least contribute on special teams. Coming out of West Georgia, Sayles ran a 4.42 at his pro day.

William Stanback, Montreal Alouettes, RB, 6-0, 233 pounds

Last but not least. Stanback was the former lead back for UCF in college and spent a short time with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2017. Stanback has had a weird career as he was All-AAC as a freshman in 2013 and was seen as a legit NFL caliber talent, but sputtered and disappointed the following two seasons and was dismissed before his final year and forced to transfer to Virginia Union.

Montreal snagged Stanback in 2018 to relieve CFL legend Tyrell Sutton, but Stanback was so dominating that the Alouettes elected to trade Sutton and Stanback finished the season as the starter. This season Stanback really displayed elite ability as he rushed for 1,048 yards and also snagged 33 receptions out of the backfield.

Stanback has always had NFL talent at over 230 pounds and running a 4.48, but he has failed multiple drug tests and needed to prove he has matured and is reliable. Since going up North, Stanback has been a perfect citizen and has earned another NFL shot.

  • The Tiger-Cats won both of this year’s regular-season meetings, winning 30-27 in Edmonton in Week 15 and 42-12 in Hamilton in Week 17.
  • The two sides haven’t met in the postseason since the 2016 Eastern Semi-Final, which the Eskimos won 24-21.
  • Tiger-Cats QB Dane Evans will make his first career playoff start. He ranked sixth in the CFL with 3,754 passing yards in 13 games after replacing the injured Jeremiah Masoli. He threw for 21 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.
  • Eskimos QB Trevor Harris ranked second in the regular season with 4,027 passing yards. He threw for 16 touchdowns with six picks in 13 games.
  • Harris completed 36 of 39 passes for 421 yards with one TD and one INT against the Alouettes last Sunday. RB C.J. Gable rushed for 54 yards and two scores.
  • Hamilton had the league’s No. 1 defense this year, allowing a total of just 344 points. Edmonton ranked third with 400 points allowed.
  • The Ti-Cats were also first in the CFL with 551 points scored. They ended the regular season on a six-game winning streak.

Prediction

Eskimos 25, Tiger-Cats 23

Moneyline (ML)

Take the value with the ESKIMOS at +200. Harris is the more experienced and more successful of the two starting quarterbacks. Edmonton is coming off a dominating road effort last week over the less intimidating Alouettes while the fear for Hamilton is the week off may lead to some rust.

Edmonton has a more balanced offense and will make life difficult for Hamilton’s No. 1 defense.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Eskimos to win outright fetches a profit of $20.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The Eskimos are just 6-12-1 overall against the spread, including last week’s cover against the Als, and 3-6-1 on the road. The Ti-Cats were 12-4-2 overall and 6-2-1 at home over the regular season.

EDMONTON is an easy choice to cover a large spread of 6.5 points with -115 odds and stay within six points in a loss or win outright.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 50.5 (-110) with two strong defenses. Expect a slow start in the first half before Edmonton is able to pull away later in the game.
