Lady Vols to host softball regional

A brief look of the Knoxville Regional of the NCAA softball tournament.

The Lady Vols will host a regional in the NCAA Tournament, playing its first game Friday at 2:30 p.m. EDT against Eastern Kentucky.

Tennessee (41-13) is the No. 9 national seed and has a tough road if they are going to make the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The Knoxville Regional at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium features host UT, an at-large team from the Southeastern Conference, and three conference champions in the Colonels, Liberty and James Madison.

The Flames (42-13), won the Atlantic Sun Conference and will take on the Dukes (34-1) at noon EDT Friday.

James Madison won the Colonial Athletic Association title and comes to Rocky Top riding a 24-game winning streak.

Eastern Kentucky (35-15) won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

The Lady Vols played the Colonels and the Flames during the 2021 regular season.

Tennessee downed Eastern Kentucky twice, sweeping a season-opening double header on Valentine’s day. The Lady Vols won those games 13-0 and 3-2.

Tennessee also downed the Flames 6-0 on March 30 in Knoxville.

Should the Lady Vols win their bracket, they’ll potentially face No. 8 Missouri.

The Tigers took two out three from UT in an SEC series in Knoxville earlier this month.

Lady Vols sweep EKU on the diamond

Tennessee opens season by besting Eastern Kentucky in softball double-header.

After nearly a full calendar year away from the diamond, the University of Tennessee softball team made a triumphant return Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Vols saw their first action in 342 days after last season was prematurely ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic last March.

They also had to wait a little longer to get the 2021 campaign underway as their season-opening tournament was rained out Friday in Conway, South Carolina.

UT’s coaching staff scheduled a double-header Sunday against Eastern Kentucky. Tennessee swept the twin bill against the Colonels, 10-0 and 3-2, at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

The day marked Tennessee’s first-ever season-opener at home.

In the opener Sunday afternoon, the Lady Vols ended things early as they run-ruled Eastern Kentucky, 10-0.

In that game, the Lady Vols clubbed four home runs as Kiki Milloy, Ally Shipman, Ashley Morgan and Ivy Davis all went deep for Tennessee, which scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning and added eight more during the third frame.

In the circle, Ashley Rogers, who missed the abbreviated 2020 campaign due to injury, returned and was impressive as she hurled a complete game and surrendered one hit and two walks, while matching a career-high with 13 strikeouts.

In the second game, Shipman homered for the Big Orange (2-0), which nabbed a comeback win with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Bailey McCachren started and went five innings and capturing a victory in the circle. She went five innings and surrendered two runs, two hits and two walks. She fanned three EKU hitters before giving way to Rogers, who tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief. She struck out five in her second appearance of the day.

The Tennessee Volunteers basketball program — both men and women — remain unbeaten after after the guys handily defeated the Alabama State Hornets last night, keeping Vols athletics on its current roll. Coming up this weekend, the football team will get its chance to continue the winning trend when it faces the Missouri Tigers on the road, and the swimming and diving team hosts the Tennessee Invitational over the course of three days beginning today. There is plenty on tap as the week winds down for Vols fans, and the teams are ready.

Vols are practicing at their best

The biggest news on the gridiron has been the Vols’ preparation for what amounts to a must-win game if Tennessee wants to keep its bowl hopes alive. According to head coach Jeremy Pruitt, the boys are putting in the work, and it appears to be paying off.

“The last two days have been our best practices all year here in the season and I like the way we practice. Our guys seem to be gaining some confidence, and I’m talking about confidence in what they’re doing. That comes with age and experience. We’ve got to take it from the practice field and take it to a Saturday.”

Pruitt added that the bye week allowed players who have been banged up a little more time to get back up to speed.

“We got guys that our banged up from the last game, but having a week off we tried to get them ready to play, but at the same time use common sense. There might be a couple of guys that might be a little bit limited, but we should have everybody ready to play.”

This news should be extremely encouraging to Vols fans, as the team appears to be peaking as the season wanes. Hopefully, the fruits of UT’s labors will be reaped on Saturday.
