Colts new QB coach talks getting the best out of Carson Wentz

Scott Milanovich is a part of the team seeking to fix Carson Wentz.

The Indianapolis Colts made a few changes to the coaching staff this season after some assistants took jobs elsewhere, and that includes adding new quarterbacks coach Scott Milanovich.

While Milanovich will be getting his feet under him back in the NFL from the CFL, he will also be a part of the group that will look to get the best out of new quarterback Carson Wentz, a task that is far from a guarantee.

With Wentz, Milanovich feels once he understands the quarterback from a personal level is when they can get the real work done.

“Honestly, I think that will be a work in progress as I get to know him. From other than what I see on film, just working with him – what is he like in individual? What concepts does he like? What throws does he like? What drops?” Milanovich told reporters at the endof March. “All those things will take me a little bit of time that hopefully Frank (Reich) and Press (Taylor) have an idea on now, but I don’t really have a straight-up answer for that until I get to know the player a little bit better.”

The Wentz project is what will determine the Colts’ fate over the next two years. Since Wentz is guaranteed no money following the 2022 season, this is essentially a two-year trial run to see if they can get him back to a high-caliber quarterback.

Milanovich feels that the 2020 season stands out both from Wentz’s lackluster performance but also with the supporting cast the Eagles put on the field.

“Well, I mean there are a lot of factors, really. You get into protection, you get into technique, you get into the injuries that they had – speaking obviously in 2020,” Milanovich said. “The four years prior to that, things were just different for him in terms of all those things I just mentioned. He was probably a little technically better and they were probably a little better in all the positions as well.”

Fixing Wentz will be no easy task. The Colts will have their hands full and the next two seasons are riding on the objective of getting him right.

That work is expected to begin later this month when the team gets together for the first time this offseason for offseason workouts.

Report: Colts hire Scott Milanovich as QBs coach

Colts have their QBs coach.

The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly hired Scott Milanovich as the new quarterbacks coach, per Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star.

Though that role hasn’t been confirmed yet, there was a report that Milanovich was considering the role of quarterbacks coach. We’ll see what the official position is when the Colts announce it.

After former offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni took the head coaching job with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Colts promoted quarterbacks coach Marcus Brady to offensive coordinator.

Now, they have Brady’s replacement in that vacant spot and it will be Milanovich, who has a history with Brady and head coach Frank Reich.

Milanovich worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars for four seasons (2016-2019) as their quarterbacks coach and was most recently the head coach of the Edmonton Football Team (2020) in the CFL.

He was also the head coach of the Toronto Argonauts from 2012-2016 where he spent time with the aforementioned Brady, who was the offensive coordinator from 2013-2017 before joining the Colts’ staff.

The Colts have to start filling out their coaching staff after seeing a few assistants leave this offseason, and they made some headway doing so in bringing in Milanovich.

Jaguars QB coach Scott Milanovich lands HC job for Edmonton Eskimos of CFL

Jags QB coach Scott Milanovich will be heading back to the CFL once the team’s season is over.

It’s a very strong possibility a lot of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ current coaching staff won’t be returning next season, but at least one member from the group already has worked lined up. Quarterbacks coach Scott Milanovich accepted an offer to go back to the Canadian football League and serve as the head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos when the Jags’ season is up.

Milanovich, 46, coached in the CFL before landing with the Jags in 2017. His most notable stop was with the Toronto Argonauts, where he was the head coach from 2012-16. In his first season there he was able to win the league’s equivalent to a Super Bowl, the Grey Cup, and was named the league’s head coach of the year as a result. Prior to that, he spent 2007-11 with the Montreal Alouettes as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for them. He also had stints with the Rhein Fire and Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe and the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders.

As a player, Milanovich was a backup quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three years (1996-99) to start his career. After his NFL career, he became a football journeyman playing with NFL Europe’s Berlin Thunder (2000), the XFL’s Los Angeles Xtreme (2001), the AFL’s Tampa Bay Storm (2002) and the Stampeders (2003).

Since joining the Jags’ staff, Milanovich was able to coach up Blake Bortles to an AFC Championship loss to the New England Patriots in 2017 and coached current starter Gardner Minshew II. Under his tutelage, Minshew was able to win six Rookie of the Week awards, a Rookie of the Month award in September and surpass the Jags’ rookie record for passing touchdowns (15). He also served as the Jags’ play caller last season when they fired offensive coordinator Nate Hackett.
