SEC football power rankings after Week 2

SEC football power rankings after Week 2

Week 2 in the SEC saw some pretty good matchups and some very impressive wins – looking at you, Arkansas.

Only one battle took place between two SEC teams over the weekend, Kentucky vs Missouri, which UK won 35-28.

Aside from Tennessee losing to Pittsburgh, every SEC team won its non-conference matchup in Week 2.

Here’s a look at our updated SEC power rankings after the second week of action.

Until the College Football Playoff rankings are released in four weeks, fans of college football will need some form of ranking system to ease their mind and get excited about.

Whether it be the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, the AP Top-25 or power rankings released by various different outlets, there’s no shortage of rankings to hold us over until the official rankings come out.

Georgia, by the way, checks in at No. 2 in the Coaches Poll and the AP Top-25 and holds the same spot in a majority of power rankings.

After a Week 1 that saw a bunch of top ranked teams look rather average, Dennis Dodd of CBSSports released his college football power rankings.

Below you can see his top-five teams. No. 5 was a surprise to me, but I have no issue with it at all.

USA TODAY Coaches Poll released: Where’s Georgia?

Week 1 of college football is in the books. We had some thrillers, some defensive battles and some offensive explosions over the Labor Day weekend. The best game of the weekend goes to Notre Dame and FSU, who met Sunday night in Tallahassee. The Irish escaped in overtime but this game had no shortage of incredible storylines.

ESPN releases college football power rankings after Week 1

ESPN releases updated college football power rankings

Aside from showdown between the Clemson Tigers and the Georgia Bulldogs, it was not the most exciting of opening weeks.

Here’s a super fast recap:

  • Georgia defeated Clemson 10-3.
  • Alabama looked like, well, Alabama, in a 44-13 blowout over Miami.
  • Ohio State and Oklahoma actually both struggled in wins over unranked teams.
  • Texas A&M was dominant against Kent State.
  • Iowa State only beat unranked Northern Iowa by six.
  • Penn State took down Wisconsin in a top-25 battle.
  • 10th ranked UNC fell to Virginia Tech.

After the first week of action, ESPN released its power rankings.

Below are the top 10 teams according to ESPN:

10. Florida Gators

Florida Gators wide receiver Ja’Markis Weston (82) makes a tackle on Florida Atlantic Owls wide receiver Lajohntay Wester (83) on a punt during a game against the Florida Atlantic Owls at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville Fla. Sept. 4, 2021.

7. Clemson

Without the threat of a consistent running game, Georgia’s defense teed off on D.J. Uiagalelei and blitzed him early and often. Clemson’s offensive line also played poorly against the Bulldogs’ deep defensive line.

6. Cincinnati

Cincinnati Bearcats linebacker Darrian Beavers (0) hits Miami Redhawks quarterback AJ Mayer (10) in the second half of the NCAA football game on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati. Cincinnati Bearcats defeated Miami Redhawks 49-14.

UGA football drops in latest SEC power rankings

The Georgia Bulldogs drop in this edition of the SEC power rankings. Florida and Texas A&M jump UGA. Bama remains at the top.

The Georgia Bulldogs played decent in a sluggish 14-3 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats. The win featured a run-heavy attack. Perhaps the Bulldogs were keeping their cards close to their chest for next week, but UGA did not look like legitimate National Championship contenders.

Now, the Dawgs are dealing with a slew of injuries heading into Saturday’s game against the Florida Gators. That mixed with turnover-heavy quarterback play from Stetson Bennett is resulting in Georgia dropping in the latest edition of SEC power rankings.

At the top, the Alabama Crimson Tide are clearly the class of the conference. Can any team defeat or even challenge Alabama? Florida may have the best chance of any team in the conference. Kyle Trask and the Gator offense would score points against the Crimson Tide defense.

In fact, the Gators, despite their loss to Texas A&M, are moving up in the latest edition of the conference power rankings. The rankings are based on who would win in a neutral site at this point in time.

SEC power rankings are per SEC Mike:

The Georgia Bulldogs fall to fourth in the SEC power rankings and it is tough to disagree. Georgia has five turnovers and scored 19.0 points per game in their last two games.

Beyond Georgia, Auburn dominated the LSU Tigers in an impressive victory to showcase their potential. Auburn still could end up as the second best team in the SEC West. The Tigers have late season games against Alabama and Texas A&M.

Texas A&M will continue to have College Football Playoff hopes following the Aggies’ win over the Arkansas Razorbacks, who fall to fifth in the power rankings. There really isn’t much separation from ranking No. 5 to ranking No. 12 in the SEC.

Teams like Tennessee, South Carolina, LSU, Ole Miss, Missouri, and more can be a handful if they play up to their potential. They will try to play spoiler all season long.

PFF releases 2020 CFB power rankings: Where’s Georgia football?

Where does Georgia football rank in these preseason CFB rankings?

Now that optimism surrounding the 2020 college football season has begun to return, it’s now that time of year where it is acceptable to start looking through preseason rankings.

Pro Football Focus (PFF) released its college football power rankings for the 2020 season this week and was awfully kind to the Southeastern Conference, including nine SEC teams in its top-25.

Georgia checked in at No. 5 on the list, which is in the neighborhood of where most have had the Bulldogs this offseason. Anywhere between 4-6 is what I would consider realistic.

On Georgia, PFF wrote:

Georgia has to replace its two starting tackles (both first-round picks in 2020) and quarterback Jake Fromm, but does boast impressive sophomore receiver George Pickens (0.44 win shares in 2019).

The nine SEC teams include:

Alabama (3), LSU (4), Georgia (5), Florida (6), Auburn (10), Texas A&M (14), Tennessee (19), Kentucky (20), Mississippi State (25).

Just a few quick thoughts:

Florida at No. 6? I know a lot of sites have had the Gators high, but I’m not seeing it.

Auburn at No. 10 is also a pretty popular placement for the Tigers. And that’s fine, but don’t be surprised when they finish with five losses again.

But then I saw Tennessee at No. 19 and had to do a double-take. This is the same Tennessee that lost to Georgia State and BYU. As far as I’m considered they have no business being in the top-25.

Here’s the full top-ten:

1. Clemson

2. Ohio State

3. Alabama

4. LSU

5. Georgia

6. Florida

7. Oklahoma

8. Notre Dame

9. Penn State

10. Auburn
