Titus Davis, ex-college star WR and brother of Titans’ Corey Davis, dies of cancer at 27

Former Central Michigan star and NFL practice player Titus Davis has died at 27

Titus Davis, a former New York Jet, Central Michigan star, and brother of the Tennessee Titans’ Corey Davis, died Wednesday at the age of 27.

In July 2020 Titus Davis was diagnosed with renal medullary carcinoma, a rare kidney cancer.

Titus Davis played at Central Michigan University from 2011-14. For his college career, he had 204 receptions and broke school records with 3,700 yards and 37 touchdowns, both of which were previously held by Antonio Brown.

Davis scored a touchdown on a remarkable play in the Bahamas Bowl, arguably the most memorable in Central Michigan history.

Davis was a four-time All-MAC selection and a freshman All American. Davis was the first player in NCAA FBS history with 8 or more receiving touchdowns in four seasons.

Davis went undrafted after college but briefly caught on with several teams’ practice squads, including the San Diego Chargers, New York Jets (twice), Buffalo Bills, and Chicago Bears.

Per the Detroit News:

Family and friends announced the illness in July in a GoFundMe post. He began chemotherapy in late July, flying to and from treatments in Houston. The average survival after diagnosis is less than a year.

His death was announced on Twitter by Miami Dolphins safety and Grand Rapids native Kavon Frazier, a teammate of Davis’ at Central Michigan. He called the receiver, “Still to this day one of the most talented players I’ve played with.”

“I’m heartbroken by the loss of Titus, who was first and foremost an outstanding person,” Dan Enos, Davis’ coach at CMU who now is on staff at Cincinnati, said in a statement to The News. “On the field, he was a phenomenal athlete and competitor. He was also a great friend and teammate to many.”

There was grief via condolences on social media.

Report: MAC becomes first FBS conference to cancel college football 2020

The Mid-American Conference is the first to cancel college football 2020 due to the pandemic.

The Mid-American Conference canceled its football season this fall because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report.

The decision was first reported by Brett McMurphy of Stadium.com.

Per Stadium.com:

The MAC reached its decision Saturday morning in a vote by the league’s presidents, sources said. The conference presidents initially met Thursday to finalize the league’s scheduling format. However, Northern Illinois president Lisa Freeman, a former research scientist at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, indicated her school would not play this fall because of the health and safety concerns, sources said.

“The league didn’t like the look of NIU going out on their own and not playing,” said a source, explaining the MAC’s non-vote on Thursday.

The Huskies have made a league-record eight MAC title game appearances and won four of the last nine MAC titles. After the league didn’t reach a decision Thursday, it voted Saturday not to play this fall, sources said.

The MAC is comprised of Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan — along with Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Ohio, and Toledo.

Western Michigan was scheduled to play Notre Dame in South Bend Sept. 19.

Michigan State football adds three future home games with Central Michigan

The Chippewas will visit Spartan Stadium in 2023, 2027, and 2030.

What could go wrong?

Michigan State football has announced three future home games with Central Michigan in the years 2023, 2027, and 2030.

The Spartans will host the Chippewas in Spartan Stadium to open the 2023 season on Sept. 2. In addition, the two schools announced future dates in 2027 (Sept. 11) and 2030 (Aug. 31).

MSU leads the all-time series against CMU, 8-3. The Spartans have won four straight against the Chippewas and won the last meeting between the two schools in 2018, 31-20, in Spartan Stadium. CMU’s most recent victory in the series came in 2009 at Spartan Stadium.

The Celebrate State Football Series, which featured ten games between MSU and the three FBS directional schools from 2011-19, has concluded. It was originally supposed to feature three games against each of Central, Western, and Eastern Michigan, with each school hosting the Spartans at home once. However, two of Eastern Michigan’s games, including MSU’s visit to Ypsilanti, were changed due to their being no guaranteed money for EMU going to East Lansing. The Spartans won in Mount Pleasant in 2012.

Chiefs area scout Pat Sperduto explains selection of DE Mike Danna in 2020 NFL Draft

Kansas City Chiefs area scout Pat Sperduto is a big Mike Danna fan.

[jwplayer CTHBA6gs-ThvAeFxT]

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Michigan DE Mike Danna in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Danna joined Michigan by way of graduate transfer from Central Michigan. From the sound of it, Danna is someone that Chiefs area scout Pat Sperduto had his eyes on long before he transferred into the Big 10 conference.

“I wrote him last year when he was at Central Michigan because I thought he was a junior that was going to come out,” Sperduto said. “They had a really disappointing season in 2018, but he had 9.5 sacks in ’18 when he was at Central. I have a couple really good friends there and they thought he was going to leave so I had written to him. He would’ve been a draft pick last year as well.”

But Danna didn’t leave Central Michigan for the draft, instead, he chose to join the Wolverines. The decision wasn’t a smashing success for Danna. He appeared in all 13 games but only drew one start. His production wasn’t nearly what it was the previous season with the Chippewas. With only 38 tackles, three tackles for loss and three sacks.

Sperduto explained that his time at Michigan was able to show one thing: His versatility.

“His role at Michigan was a little bit different so when he gets to Michigan, and they do this with a lot of their players, they have multiple roles, they play multiple spots and his role there was unique for him,” Sperduto continued. “It’s something that he hadn’t done where he stemmed down inside and played over a guard a little bit and I think he’s probably more natural outside as an edge guy. He’s a great, great kid. Like a great kid. All of my friends that are up there said he’s one of their favorite kids and nothing but great things were said about the person at Central. And then it was the same when you walked into Michigan it was like he’s just rare character.”

One common thread with a lot of the players that Kansas City came away with during the 2020 NFL Draft was work ethic. They’re going after guys that have a reputation of being a hard worker, whether it is in the weight room, practice field or playbook.

“It starts with his character and his work ethic,” Sperduto said. “You can tell. He was one of the hardest workers at Central and then the same thing once he got to Michigan, he instantly put on weight. It’s just the reality of the business of college football Central Michigan might not have the same training table, the same things that Michigan has so he put on good weight and right away the same work ethic and the same character and the same practice habits. You watch him at practice at Michigan and he’s going just as hard if not harder because now he has to prove himself, in his mind, all over again. I think that’s kind of what we’ll get when he walks through the door. It’s funny because I actually shot him a text before the draft even started and said, ‘Hey it’s not where you’re taken. It’s what you do when you walk through the doors’. It’s funny that he’s one of our guys and you’ll notice him very quickly because that’s the type of kid he is. He’s just going to work his tail off.”

As for Danna’s fit in Kansas City, he won’t be making a switch to SAM linebacker like some thought, at least not in Sperduto’s eyes. He envisions Danna’s natural fit in the NFL at the defensive end position.

“I think his natural position is going to be as a defensive end for us and then the coaches, that’s their job as they find the best possible role for him,” Sperduto said. “I guarantee he’ll be a core teamer so Coach Toub (Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub) will love him. Then, however the defensive staff, Coach Spags (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) and Coach Daly (Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach Brendan Daly) decides to use him, he’ll adapt to it. He’s a guy that’s going to adapt to whatever role you give him.”

Whatever Danna’s role will be in Kansas City, you can’t help but be excited given the way Sperduto talks about the person and the player.

Get familiar with the newest defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Michigan DE Mike Danna at pick No. 177 in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Danna is an interesting player. He spent four seasons at Central Michigan before transferring to Michigan in 2019. He’s a highly-motivated and underrated athlete, failing to receive an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine. At 6-2 and 252 pounds, he’s undersized compared to what Steve Spagnuolo typically likes at the defensive end position. Turn on the tape and it’s easy to see why they like him.

PODCAST: Mountain West Bowl Recap Part 1

The Mountain West went 1-2

Contact/Follow @JeremyMauss & @MWCwire

How did the bowl games turn out?

Jeremy goes solo to recap the first three games of the bowl season which include the Frisco, Las Vegas, and New Mexico Bowls. Well, they all did not go as planned with the league going 1-2 in those games with only San Diego State coming out on top in New Mexico.

Utah State’s offense showed up in the Frisco Bowl for the most part with a few miscues but the defense could not tackle and gave up an absurd 51 points. Boise State played one of its worst games in a very long time and had its poorest bowl performance ever in the 38-7 loss to Washington.

There is a lot of second-guessing for head coach Bryan Harsin in how he got ready for this game and specifically at the quarterback position.

New Mexico Bowl: Central Michigan vs. San Diego State odds, lines, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s New Mexico Bowl between Central Michigan and San Diego State college football matchup, with college football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Central Michigan Chippewas (8-5) and San Diego State Aztecs (9-3) lock horns Saturday in the New Mexico Bowl. Kickoff at Dreamstyle Stadium in Albuquerque is set for 2 p.m. ET. We analyze the Central Michigan-San Diego State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Central Michigan vs. San Diego State: Three things you need to know

1. Central Michigan is 28th in the nation with 445.6 yards per game and 44th in scoring at 31.9 points per game. The Chippewas are 20th against the run, allowing just 115.1 yards per game on the ground.

2. San Diego State, on the other hand, struggles to move the ball. The Aztecs are 115th in the nation in total yards (329.3), tied for 97th in passing yards (195.6), 103rd in rushing yards (133.7) and 119th in scoring (19.0). Defensively, though, the Aztecs are an outstanding fifth in total yards allowed (288.7), second against the run (72.3) and fourth in points allowed (12.8) per game.

3. Aztecs leading rusher RB Juwan Washington (ankle) is listed as questionable. If he cannot go it would be RB Chase Jasmin leading the charge, and he was more than capable with a team-best 4.6 yards per carry on 69 attempts while leading the team with three rushing TDs.

Central Michigan vs. San Diego State: Odds, betting lines and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday at 2:25 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Central Michigan 23, San Diego State 15

Moneyline (ML)

CENTRAL MICHIGAN (+145) is worth a roll of the dice, as it sports a decent offense and should be able to solve the San Diego State defense. The Aztecs (-176) really struggled offensively this season, Washington is iffy to play, and QB Ryan Agnew suffered a calf injury last time out (although he should be fine). Still, he is more of a caretaker than playmaker, and if CMU scores early it isn’t San Diego State’s forte to score a lot of points and come from behind.

Against the Spread (ATS)

CENTRAL MICHIGAN (+3.5, -115) is a super attractive play catching three and a hook. Even if the Chippewas can’t win outright, San Diego State (-3.5, -106) isn’t going to blow anyone out — ever. So light the fire up with the Chips and enjoy the payout.

For a little extra fun, take CMU +0.5 (-134) on the first-quarter line, and look for the Chippewas to fire out to an early lead. It’s bowl season, build that bankroll with some early fun.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. The total 40.5 is just too risky here. If there was a lean, it’s to the under, as San Diego State struggles offensively. A more attractive play is betting the UNDER 21.5 (-125) on San Diego State’s team point total.

Miami (Ohio) vs. Central Michigan odds, lines, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s MAC Championship Game between the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks and Central Michigan Chippewas, with betting odds and picks.

The Miami (Ohio) Redhawks (7-5, 6-2 MAC East) and Central Michigan Chippewas (8-4, 6-2 MAC West) tangle at Ford Field in Detroit at 12:00 p.m. ET for the Mid-American Conference championship. We analyze the Miami (Ohio)-Central Michigan odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Miami (Ohio) vs. Central Michigan: Three things you need to know

1. Miami clinched its spot with two games to play, and really struggled down the stretch. The Redhawks narrowly escaped with a 20-17 win against winless Akron Nov. 20, and were blasted 41-27 at Ball State last weekend.

2. The Redhawks lost QB Brett Gabbert to an undisclosed injury for the second half last week, but he is expected to be available for this one. He left last week’s game with Miami up 27-14 at half. The ‘Hawks were outscored 27-0 in the final 30 minutes without him.

3. Central Michigan crowned Toledo by a 49-7 score last week, and it has posted 144 total points across the past three games. The Chips have been cover kings this season, too, going 11-1 against the spread while the Over is 6-1 across the past seven.

Prediction

Central Michigan 44, Miami (Ohio) 23

Moneyline (ML)

Central Michigan (-250) has been impressive from start to finish this season, and it probably should have beaten the ‘other’ Miami, you know, the one from Florida, back in late September. The Chippewas fell in 17-12 as 30.5-point underdogs. The Chips are as explosive as anyone and that’s bad news for a Miami (Ohio) team (+200) which enters amid what’s probably its worst stretch of the season.

Against the Spread (ATS)

CENTRAL MICHIGAN (-6.5, -121) is a great play, as the Chips covered in 11 of 12 games this season, and they’re 5-0 ATS in their past five as the favorite. Miami (+6.5, +100) is 13-4 ATS across its last 17 league games, but the Redhawks have failed to cover in the past two. The Redhawks are 2-2 straight up in their four appearances in the title game. The Chippewas are a perfect 3-0 SU in their previous three showings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The MAC title game has a history of points under the roof at Ford Field since 2004. The OVER 54.5 (-105) is a nice play here, as we have seen an average of 65 total points in the previous seven installments. The Over is also 5-2 in Miami’s past seven against winning sides while going 6-1 in the past seven for CMU.
