Best Cedi Osman highlights of 2023-24 San Antonio Spurs season

Check out some of Cedi Osman’s best highlights from his 2023-24 season with the San Antonio Spurs.

Obviously, most of the eyes on the San Antonio Spurs this past season were on Victor Wembanyama, as the 20-year-old rookie burst onto the scene with a purpose. However, there were some other guys on the team who played well, even past the young core that surrounds Wembanyama.

This past summer, the Spurs got involved in the deal between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat that sent Max Strus from the latter to the former. In return, they got a couple of pieces, one of which being Cedi Osman, who they held onto. The veteran played well in his first season in San Antonio.

Following the conclusion of the season, the Spurs’ official YouTube channel posted a video of Osman’s best highlights from the 2023-24 season.

In 72 appearances for the spurs this past season (including 69 off the pine), Osman averaged 6.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting 47.9% from the field and 38.9% from behind the three-point line.

Cedi Osman discusses progression of Spurs throughout the season

After the San Antonio Spurs’ tough loss to the Golden State Warriors, Cedi Osman spoke about the improvements of the team.

The San Antonio Spurs have been sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference for almost the entire season. Their defense has struggled mightily, and they haven’t won many games because of it. However, since the All-Star break, the Spurs have found a new groove. And though their three-game win streak was snapped by the Golden State Warriors on Sunday night, they look like a different team.

Victor Wembanyama has been on fire since the break, and the rest of the team is slowly but surely learning how to play around him. Even when guys have been out, the Spurs have been able to fight hard and stay in games.

Cedi Osman recently spoke about the immense growth of the Spurs throughout the course of this season. (H/t Jeremy Brener of Inside the Spurs)

“We have changed a lot since the beginning of the season,” Osman said. “We’re a totally different team. I think you can see that, obviously, when we’re playing on the court. We’re much different. We obviously know now what everybody else is capable of. Now everybody understands as individuals what we have to do. I think we’re better. I think that if the season would start today we’d be in a different spot. I really do believe that.”

Heading into next year, the Spurs will be looking to significantly improve, and if their recent stretch is any indication of their potential level of play, they should be in a good spot moving forward.

Stein: San Antonio has ‘made available’ Doug McDermott, Cedi Osman for trade

“A trade before this season’s deadline, sources say, is much more likely,” writes Stein.

It seems that the San Antonio Spurs are looking to move on from a pair of veteran wings currently on the team’s roster. In a recent report that echoes what we have been hearing from Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, his fellow podcast host and Substack legend Marc Stein is echoing those reports.

Doug McDermott and Cedi Osman are two veterans that the Spurs have made available before the Feb. 8 deadline — with both players (McDermott at $13.8 million at Osman at $6.7 million) on expiring contracts,” writes Stein of the wings in question. While McDermott is the elder of the two at 32, he is shooting a sizzling 46.8 from deep this season, and will likely garner attention from fringe contenders looking for a short-term offensive boost to their roster.

Osman, at 28, may not be quite the long-distance marksman, but he is shooting a healthy 36.7 from 3, and can pass the ball a bit.

“The Spurs could have traded McDermott last season but decided, in the end, against parting ways,” adds Stein. “A trade before this season’s deadline, sources say, is much more likely.”

Report: Spurs listening to trade offers for 2 veteran wings

According to a recent report, the San Antonio Spurs are listening to trade offers for Doug McDermott and Cedi Osman.

As the San Antonio Spurs prepare for the second half of what has the potential to be the worst season in franchise history, the NBA trade deadline looms near. Though Gregg Popovich mocked the idea of the Spurs making any big-time moves, it would make sense for them to explore their options.

Victor Wembanyama clearly has the talent to be the face of the franchise, so putting high-caliber players around him should be a top priority. At the same time, this team is young, they are struggling, and they have no chance of making the postseason. Because of that, selling assets this season also makes sense.

According to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, the Spurs are listening to trade offers for veteran wings Doug McDermott and Cedi Osman. (H/t Zach Dimmitt of Inside the Spurs)

“I was told that the Spurs are listening to offers for some of their veterans that are on expiring deals,” Haynes said. “They don’t have too many veterans, but they have two veterans that are on expiring deals, Doug McDermott and Cedi Osman. These are two players that would be pretty good fixtures on a team that’s trying to win or contend right now.”

McDermott, who just turned 32 years old, is averaging 6.4 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists this season while shooting 46.1% from the field and 46.8% from behind the three-point line.

Meanwhile, Osman, who is 28, is averaging 7.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists while shooting 48.0% from the field and 36.7% from behind the three-point line.

Both veterans would be solid fits on any team that needs additional three-point shooting.

Might a Grant Williams sign-and-trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers make sense for all parties?

Would a return of Cedi Osman be enough for the Celtics in this case?

Might a Grant Williams sign-and-trade by the Boston Celtics to the Cleveland Cavaliers make sense for all parties?

In a recent article for Cleveland.com, Cleveland Cavaliers beat reporter Chris Fedor noted Boston might balk at a big enough offer sheet and that the “Cavs are monitoring the situation.”

Cedi Osman’s expiring contract combined with some added salary filler and future second-round picks could be appealing to a cap-strapped organization in a possible sign-and-trade deal that would allow the Cavs to sign Williams for more than midlevel exception,” writes the Cleveland.com reporter, “similar to what they did a few years ago with Lauri Markkanen.”

“Would that be enough?” he ponders.

It certainly could be if there were no other offers out there — and that assumes the Celtics do not find a path to retain the former Tennessee player.

With free agency set to kick off at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, we will not have too long to wait in order to find out.

Cedi Osman’s nose started leaking yellow fluid and NBA fans were so confused

Is that yellow … blood??

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Cedi Osman had plenty of people freaked out on Sunday night when he took a shot to the face in the fourth quarter against the Pistons. It was the kind of hit to the face that could have easily caused a nosebleed. And for a moment, that’s what appeared to be happening.

There was just one issue:

Whatever dripped from his nose was yellow.

That understandably caused confusion across NBA Twitter — and even on the floor as a player said, “It’s yellow. What the (expletive).” — because, well, blood is not yellow. It’s never yellow. Yet, it sure looked like Osman was bleeding yellow.

Fans immediately started looking for an explanation. Did Osman actually throw up a sports drink? Did he have a wicked sinus infection? Did he suffer a serious injury and start leaking spinal fluid? He did not. Or, was he actually an alien who bleeds yellow?

Actual medical professionals went with the simple explanation of it being mucus. Weirdly runny mucus, but still mucus.

Thankfully, Osman would be OK to continue playing in the game despite confusing NBA Twitter.

New mock trade has Sixers acquiring Cedi Osman from Cavaliers

A new mock trade has the Philadelphia 76ers acquiring wing player Cedi Osman from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

As the Philadelphia 76ers head into the offseason, the hope is that they will be able to acquire a wing player to add to their depth as they move forward with their championship hopes.

The starting lineup is solid led by a star duo in the form of Joel Embiid and James Harden, but the bench unit needs a boost. They were able to get some help in the 2021 offseason in the form of Georges Niang, but they need help on the wings as they move forward.

A new mock trade has appeared and it includes the Sixers giving a call to the Cleveland Cavaliers to see how much it would take to get Cedi Osman off their hands. Adam Aaronson of The Rights to Ricky Sanchez proposes a new trade.

Five players to watch to use the Tristan Thompson traded player exception on

Boston has become adept with the use of non-simultaneous trades, and have three of note to work with.

The Boston Celtics have become pioneers in the art of juggling traded player exceptions (TPEs) to maintain cap flexibility and manage their overall luxury tax burden, deftly using second-round draft picks to allow the franchise to add or deal away players

The team possesses three such TPEs of note on top of two smaller ones (for $500,000 from the Moses Brown trade and for $370,564 from the Jeff Teague trade). The smaller ones are unlikely to be used given that such exceptions are the space into which a team completes a non-simultaneous trade. That means any player incoming will need to make no more than $100,000 above the dollar amount in each TPE, which cannot be combined or added to otherwise.

Apart from those, Boston has TPEs for $17.1 million from the Evan Fournier trade, $9.7 million from the Tristan Thompson deal, and just over $5 million left from the Kemba Walker trade. They expire July 18, July 7, and May 17 respectively. Today, we’ll look at some of our favorite options the Celtics could trade for with the Thompson TPE.

Darius Garland is averaging fewest assists for team leader since 1951

NBA rookie Darius Garland is averaging 2.8 assists per game, which is actually the lowest for a team leader in the 24-second shot clock era.

Cavs rookie Darius Garland is averaging 2.8 assists per game, which is actually the lowest for a team leader in the 24-second shot clock era.

Most of the lowest figures came before 1951, which is when the current rule was introduced. Since then, the previous-worst since 1968 was by Marcelo Huertas (3.4) on the Los Angeles Lakers in 2015-16 and Tony Parker on the San Antonio Spurs (3.5) in 2017-18.

To contextualize how bad it has been for Garland, who still manages to lead the Cavaliers in assists: The rookie has produced 2.3 assists per game in a set offense, per Synergy, which ranks No. 103 so far this season. His assists per game when running his team’s transition offense (0.5) ranks No. 120 as well.

Garland is averaging just 1.0 assist per 70 possessions to Kevin Love, which is quite a bit lower than he has received from teammates in previous years. compare that to last season when Cleveland’s Cedi Osman had 1.7 assists per 70 to Love. Love received more than three assists per 70 from LeBron James during their final two seasons together.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe recently wrote about how frustrating this has clearly been for the veteran big man, citing an intentional lane violation after just planting himself in the key (via The Lowe Post):

“He still stood there even as Brett Brown was on the court yelling for a three-second violation. And then as the coup de gras, he raised his hand to call for the ball and alert, on purpose I think, alert the referees to say: ‘That’s right. I’m still here.'”

Lowe believes that was his way of trying to signal to Garland and fellow young guard Collin Sexton that he wanted more touches.

Cleveland, overall, is passing at a fairly normal rate during the 2019-20 season. They are averaging 288.4 passes per game, which ranks 16th in the league.

But only 7.2 percent of those passes have been on assists, the second-lowest rate among all teams. The Cavaliers are averaging 20.7 assists per game this season, the third-worst mark in the NBA.

Prediction

Cavaliers 105, Pistons 101

Moneyline (ML)

The CAVALIERS (+120) are a nice value at home as short dogs. Neither of these teams has been very hot lately, and the Pistons (-143) are a much bigger risk on the road, where they have been even worse.

New to sports betting? Every $1 wagered on a Cleveland win profits $1.20 if the Cavs prevail. (Ex: Bet $10 to win $12.00, $20 to win $24.00, $4.55 to win $10).

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Take the CAVALIERS (+2.5, –106) at home against the visiting Pistons (-2.5, -115). For whatever reason, Detroit has had a difficult time on the road against its Lake Erie rivals in Cleveland, going 1-6 against the spread in the past seven trips to C-Town. The home team is also 10-3 ATS in the previous 13 meetings in this series.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over might be the trend if you look at past results in this series, but the UNDER 212.5 (+105) is the play lately for both teams. The Under is 4-0 in the past four road games for the Pistons, and 5-1 in the past six at home for the Cavaliers. The Under is also 5-2 in Detroit’s past seven against Eastern Conference opponents, while Cleveland has hit the Under in seven of its last 10 games within the conference.
