Season opener at Rams is latest Cowboys game to have attendance cut

The Cowboys now have four road games scheduled in 2020 to be played before reduced crowds or empty stadiums.

If there ends up being a 2020 NFL season, America’s Team will play in front of a lot less of America than they’re used to. The Los Angeles Rams announced on Tuesday that their new stadium will see drastically reduced attendance for home games, including their season opener against the Cowboys. And that’s if fans are allowed in the building at all.

SoFi Stadium, newly built with a capacity of 70,000 fans, is expected to cap attendance at 15,000 for any games played this season, and all fans will be required to wear a mask unless actively eating or drinking. The Rams join three other teams on the Cowboys’ away schedule who have already gone public with changes to their attendance policies.

Here’s how the road slate breaks down, game by game, based on what is known currently.

Week 1, Sept. 13: Cowboys at Rams

As noted, the Rams say they will admit no more than 15,000 fans for SoFi Stadium’s first game on Sunday night of opening weekend. The team points out that the first seven rows of stands will be tarped off, and that seating blocks to accommodate between one and ten fans apiece will be set up to promote social distancing, with separation of six feet between blocks.

Week 3, Sept. 27: Cowboys at Seahawks

The Seahawks have not yet made an announcement regarding home games at CenturyLink Field. But as per the CDC, the state of Washington has seen almost 6,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the last seven days. Seattle’s KOMO News reports that the daily case count is currently higher than it was during the spring, which officials then called “the peak.”

Week 7, Oct. 25: Cowboys at Washington

Washington also has not come forward with any changes to attendance policy at FedEx Field. The CDC reports over 11,000 positive cases of the virus in the District of Columbia, or 1,600 positive cases per 100,000 people. That puts D.C. in the highest bracket nationwide for that category. The nation’s capital saw 102 new cases on July 21 alone.

Week 8, Nov. 1: Cowboys at Eagles

City officials in Philadelphia stated last week that the Eagles would be allowed to play their games at Lincoln Financial Field with no fans in the building. The team has not made a statement, though, and the city has declared “that this is a fluid situation, and this policy is under constant review.”

Week 11, Nov. 22: Cowboys at Vikings

Minnesota has given no word on what the game at U.S. Bank Stadium might look like, or if any changes will be needed at all. According to the CDC, Minnesota currently ranks in the bottom half of the US in new cases over the last seven days and total cases per 100,000 people.

Week 13, Dec. 3: Cowboys at Ravens

The Ravens organization was the first NFL club to announce plans for reduced capacity. Dallas will see no more than 14,000 fans when they travel to Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium. That’s under one-fifth of the venue’s capacity.

Week 14, Dec. 13: Cowboys at Bengals

There have been no announced alterations as of yet to the attendance policy at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. Ohio currently sits just outside the top 10 states in reported COVID-19 cases over the last seven days.

Week 17, Jan. 3: Cowboys at Giants

The regular season finale could be played before an empty house. An executive order from Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey means no fans in the stands at MetLife Stadium “until further notice.”

While the Cowboys have not made an official announcement regarding home game attendance at AT&T Stadium, the most recent guidelines from Texas state governor Greg Abbott- dated July 2– specify that professional sports venues may not exceed 50% capacity. If that figure holds, it would put the Cowboys playing in front of no more than 40,000 fans during each of their eight home games.

The team did, however, share a video via their social media accounts showing an empty AT&T Stadium with the message, “We Will Come Back Louder.” The Cowboys were included with the NBA’s Mavericks, MLB’s Rangers, NHL’s Stars, and other pro teams based in the Metroplex. All shared the video on Tuesday.

It is an admirable show of solidarity with local teams who are already playing under bizarre circumstances. Whether the video is to also be taken as the first hint that the Cowboys and their fans are about to receive similarly disappointing news cutting live attendance at games is unknown.

But two weeks ago, only one NFL club had altered their attendance plan. Now, half of the Cowboys’ road schedule looks to be played before reduced crowds or in completely empty stadiums. The writing is on the wall.

NFLPA: Coronavirus cases in Jets’ market declining compared to rest of league

The Jets and Giants have a significantly fewer amount of cases on average over the past two weeks than most other metropolitan areas.

As the coronavirus continues to spread across the country, the NFL and its fans continue to keep a constant eye on how the virus could affect the upcoming 2020 season.

COVID-19 cases continue to spike nationwide, but some areas with NFL teams have seen fewer daily cases per 100,000 people in the past 14 days than others. The NFL Players Association released data from Johns Hopkins University on the metropolitan areas for every team in the league. The New York City-New Jersey-Pennsylvania area, home to plenty of Jets and Giants fans, rank among the lowest with just 3.5 daily cases per 100,000 people as of July 15.

In mid-April, that number hovered around 61 per 100,00 people, showing just how far the area has come in slowing the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, the national average hovers around 16.8 daily cases per 100,000 people over that same stretch.

The cumulative case number and cumulative death rate, though, remain well above the national average – likely because of the initial outbreak in New York City and New Jersey at the beginning of the pandemic. The area’s cumulative cases per 100,000 people are still relatively high at 2,591 – compared with the national average of 1,022 – while the cumulative death rate remains high, too, at 223 per 100,000 compared to the national average of 41. Fortunately, the death rate has dropped to the national average of 0.2 deaths per 100,000 over a 14-day period.

The New York Times, which aggregated data from state and local health officials, broke it down even further into daily average cases over a seven-day period. New York City and New Jersey saw declines in daily average cases with 317 and 324, respectively, while Pennslyvania saw an increase with 792, as of July 15. That fits in line with data from the Centers for Disease Control, which reports New York City totaled 2,285 cases in the past seven days. New Jersey had 2,239 and Pennsylvania had 5,579.

This is all could be moot, though, considering the NFL still doesn’t have a solidified plan for keeping players, staff and other team personnel safe. According to the NFLPA, 72 known players have already tested positive for COVID-19, but teams still don’t know what the league will do if a player tests positive during the season.

NFL players have also been working out across the country – either on their own or with other players – so it’s had to gauge how their return to their respective teams will affect the spread. Sam Darnold worked out in California and Florida, Jamison Crowder went to North Carolina, and Chris Herndon and Steve McLendon have been in Georgia.

In response to a lack of information, Texans’ defensive end J.J. Watt tweeted a list of demands players want from the league before returning to play, including an Infectious Disease Emergency Response (IDER) plan, testing protocols and a plan for training camp, which is scheduled to begin on July 19 for rookies and July 28 for veterans. The only thing players know for sure is they won’t be allowed to swap jerseys after games, something Jamal Adams said he would still do despite the league’s instance on social distancing after games.

Then there’s the big elephant in the room – money. The NFLPA and the league are reportedly fighting over keeping a portion of the players’ salaries to lighten the burden of a potential revenue loss. The league could lose billions of dollars if fans aren’t allowed at stadiums this season, and the salary cap could decrease as well. Philadelphia already announced fans wouldn’t be able to attend Eagles’ home games this season, while other teams like the Jaguars and Patriots plan to open stadiums to fans at minimal capacity.

There’s no word on if Metlife Stadium will be open to fans, but New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said there’s “some hope” Jets and Giants fans will be able to attend games this season

NFLPA directs agents to instruct players on CDC’s COVID-19 risk factors

The NFLPA directed agents to instruct their players on the CDC’s COVID-19 risk factors and to speak to their doctors before returning to play.

The NFL Players’ Association is continuing to strive to find the best possible practices to ensure their players are able to safely return by the start of training camps at the end of July.

Most recently, the players’ union sent out a memo to NFL agents instructing them to advise players as to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions’ risk factors for COVID-19. NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero reports the agents are required to speak with their clients on the matter by mid-July, urging them to contact their own, personal physicians prior to deciding on whether or not to play this season.

A copy of the memo is included in Pelissero’s tweet.

“Every player needs to be aware of their individual medical status as they approach a return to work,” the memo reads. Players are to be advised to contact both their personal as well as their team physicians. “Proactive engagement in this matter will help players achieve that goal.”

NBA says they will test players for coronavirus every other day

As the NBA continues to finalize the details of their return, they finally gave some testing protocols to the players.

NBA players have publicly voiced their concerns that the league had not been as specific as they would have liked to be with regards to their coronavirus testing protocols, but on Saturday, the league delivered their plans for coronavirus testing, but the types of tests that will be used was not revealed in the plan, according to ESPN.

The memo doesn’t say what type of testing the league will use, but sources told ESPN’s Zach Lowe that it is a less invasive nasal swab, and possibly much less invasive than the one that has been common so far.

So, the players will likely still be waiting on some more concrete answers from the NBA. Shams Charania of The Athletic also reported that the league gave teams the go-ahead to test asymptomatic players. It appears that the NBA will not do the long nasal swab that goes near the brain which many have seen, which begs the question of how accurate their coronavirus tests are. Several players, led by Kyrie Irving and Dwight Howard, also have legitimate questions about whether they want to play at all amid a backdrop of social and political unrest in the streets of American cities sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police, as well as centuries of racial violence in the United States.

Meanwhile, young players like Kyle Kuzma are asking the league for increased insurance protections against illness and severe injury. LeBron is clearly one of the superstar players who would like to finish the season, but he has yet to speak out on the objections from his NBA colleagues.
