Cardinals announce 1 roster move to start training camp

The Cardinals waived OL Carter O’Donnell with an injury designation as players reported for camp on Tuesday.

The Arizona Cardinals reported for training camp on Tuesday and announced one roster move. Offensive lineman Carter O’Donnell was waived with an injury designation.

If he clears waivers, he will revert to injured reserve, where he will remain at least until healthy and can receive an injury settlement.

The move frees a roster spot.

Such moves are common at the start of training camp when players have their medical exams.

They did not place any player on PUP or NFI, which is good news and suggests that everyone will be cleared to practice starting Wednesday, pending they make such a move in the morning.

O’Donnell was one of four players to start games at left guard last season. Acquired via a waiver claim before the season after he was among final cuts of the Indianapolis Colts, O’Donnell played in five games, starting three at left guard.

He got injured at some point during the offseason. He missed the last week of OTAs and did not practice during minicamp.

2024 Cardinals roster preview: OL Carter O’Donnell

We will preview every player on the Cardinals’ roster heading into training camp. This is about offensive lineman Carter O’Donnell.

The Arizona Cardinals will open training camp July 23 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.

Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2023, questions they face and their roster outlook.

Next up is offensive lineman Carter O’Donnell.

Background

O’Donnell enters his fifth NFL season and his second with the Cardinals. The native Canadian played collegiately at the University of Alberta and entered the NFL as a rookie free agent in 2020. He spent three seasons between the practice squad and active roster of the Indianapolis Colts before he was part of final cuts after last preseason. He did not appear in any game in those three seasons.

The Cardinals claimed him off waivers and he spent all last season on their active roster.

61 days till the Cardinals’ season opener against the Bills

The last impactful No. 61 was center Rodney Hudson.

The NFL offseason continues to get closer on this lovely July Tuesday. The Arizona Cardinals will take the field against the Buffalo Bills on the road in Week 1 on September 8, which is 61 days from now.

Offensive lineman Carter O’Donnell is the Cardinals’ current No. 61. While he started three games at left guard last year, he hasn’t really been an impactful player yet.

You don’t have to go very far back to find an impactful No. 61. The guy before O’Donnell, center Rodney Hudson, was that guy.

Now, Hudson didn’t end up being as impactful as many had hoped, but that was because of injuries.

The Cardinals traded for him in 2021 and gave him a contract extension. He was very good when he played. He played in 12 games in 2021 and the offense was at its best when he was healthy.

A nagging knee injury limited him to only four games in 2022. He almost retired after 2021 but was coaxed back to the team despite the knee problems, only to have it fail him.

He has since retired and the Cardinals released him in 2023 for cap purposes.

We will be back with another countdown post tomorrow.

Carter O’Donnell is surprise starter at LG for Cardinals

O’Donnell became the Cardinals’ fourth different starter at left guard this season.

The Arizona Cardinals started their game on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons with a new starting left guard. With Elijah Wilkinson on injured reserve and Trystan Colon ruled out for the second straight game with a calf injury, Dennis Daley was expected to get the start.

He didn’t.

It was Carter O’Donnell, who became the fourth player to start at left guard for Arizona.

O’Donnell had not even dressed for a game for the Cardinals until last week.

He finished the game at right guard when Will Hernandez exited with a knee injury.

He was even questionable to play this week. He suffered an ankle injury in practice.

Last week was his first NFL game and his start against the Falcons was the first of his career.

The Cardinals acquired O’Donnell via a waiver claim before the season began.

So far this season, Elijah Wilkinson started six games at left guard. Trystan Colon started two and Daley one before O’Donnell started on Sunday.

Cardinals claim OL Carter O’Donnell off waivers from Colts

Carter O’Donnell was claimed by the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals were awarded offensive lineman Carter O’Donnell off the waiver wire from the Indianapolis Colts, according to the league’s transaction wire Thursday.

O’Donnell, who initially made the 53-man roster for Indy, was waived as a corresponding move following the waiver claims the Colts made Wednesday, which included the addition of two offensive linemen.

O’Donnell has yet to play in an NFL regular-season game and has been with the Colts since joining the roster as an undrafted free-agent rookie following the 2021 NFL draft. He missed the entire 2022 season due to a foot injury.

Cardinals land another O-lineman on waiver claim

O’Donnell spent the last three seasons with the Colts but has not yet played in an NFL game.

The Arizona Cardinals continue to be active on the waiver wire. After acquiring six players on Wednesday off waivers, they added a seventh on Thursday, the team announced.

They were awarded former Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman Carter O’Donnell.

He is 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds. He spent the last three seasons with the Colts, bouncing between the practice squad and active roster, although he has yet to appear in an NFL game.

He signed with the Colts in 2020 as an undrafted rookie out of the University of Alberta in Canada. He is Canadian.

He earned second-team All-Candian honors in 2018 and then first-team honors in 2019, his final year at Alberta.

He is the Cardinals’ 10th offensive lineman and fourth now on the roster who was not with the team before final cuts.

The Cardinals, following this move and placing guard Dennis Daley and linebacker Myjai Sanders on injured reserve, still have a roster vacancy.

Colts place TE Jelani Woods on IR among several roster moves

Jelani Woods will start the season on the injured reserve list.

The Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods was placed on the injured reserve list among several roster moves, the team announced Wednesday.

Woods has been dealing with a torn hamstring since the start of training camp, which was the reaggravation of the injury he dealt with during the spring workouts.

The second-year tight end was held out of the majority of training camp and the entirety of the preseason. Because he was placed on the injured reserve list after the waiver process concluded, he will be eligible to return but after he’s forced to miss the first four games of the season.

The Colts made three roster claims Wednesday in the forms of offensive tackle Ryan Hayes, guard Josh Sills and linebacker Isaiah Land.

In order to make room on the roster for those three waiver claims, the Colts waived defensive tackle McTelvin Agim and guard/tackle Carter O’Donnell. They also released wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie, who was almost immediately re-signed to the roster.

Studs and duds from Colts’ preseason win over Eagles

Studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason win over the Eagles.

The Indianapolis Colts officially concluded the preseason Thursday night with a 27-13 win over the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.

Though the Eagles rested their starters, the Colts had their starting units on the field for the entire first half before giving way to the second and third teams.

Rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson got the start and found himself in the gray area. He showed plenty of promise but also some extreme growing pains, which is to be expected throughout the entire regular season. So he won’t be on this list.

Regardless, here’s a look at the studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason win over the Eagles:

1 veteran player on roster bubble at each position for Colts

Taking a look at one Colts’ veteran on the roster bubble from each position.

The Indianapolis Colts are just weeks away from the start of training camp when the team will arrive at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield.

Bringing in a rookie head coach and new coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball means there will be a lot of competition taking place throughout the roster.

Training camp and the preseason will be the best time for players to make their cases for the 53-man roster. For this exercise, we’re going to look at veteran players from each position who are on the roster bubble.

We’ll try to include as many relevant veterans as possible, ones who carry some weight but realistically may be on the fringe of the roster.

Here’s a look at one veteran player on the roster bubble from each position for the Colts:

Grading the Colts’ free agency moves in 2023

Grading every move the Colts have made in free agency this offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts have turned their attention to the 2023 NFL draft after making some waves since the opening of free agency last month.

While the Colts are still likely to add a handful of pieces to the roster before the draft—specifically at cornerback and offensive line—the majority of their moves have been made in free agency.

If and when those moves are made before the draft, we’ll add them to this list of grades.

Even with the noise quieting down, we’re still tracking the moves the Colts are making in free agency and will do so through the month of April.

Here’s a look at our grades for the Colts’ moves in free agency, which also includes the notable moves of a trade and the release of a pair of starters:
