Russell Wilson nearing Seahawks franchise record in passing yards

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is 389 yards away from passing Matt Hasselbeck as the franchise leader in passing yards.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is 389 yards away from passing Matt Hasselbeck as the team’s franchise leader in passing yards.

Wilson, now in his eighth season with Seattle, has accrued 29,046 total passing yards, well ahead of Dave Krieg (26,132) and Jim Zorn (20,122) who are in third and fourth place, respectively.

Wilson has racked up 3,422 of those yards this season, for an average of 263.2 yards per game. So while he probably won’t pass Hasselbeck this Sunday in Carolina (the Panthers have yet to give up over 365 passing yards in a game this season) he seems destined to take over the record the following Sunday, at home against the Cardinals.

Wilson is already in first place in touchdowns and wins, despite being just fourth in total games played. He’ll move into a tie with Zorn for third place after Sunday’s game, and should pass both Krieg and Hasselbeck next season – barring an injury.

Wilson and the Seahawks will be focused on getting a win and securing a spot in the playoffs over individual accomplishments, but it’s no surprise that he is steadily climbing to the top of the record books in Seattle.

NFL releases salary cap projections for 2020

NFL releases salary cap projections for 2020

According to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, the league informed teams today that the 2020 salary cap will be in the range of $196.8-201.2 million, another significant jump from $188.2 million this year.

The increase should give the Panthers plenty of room to pay their most important pending free agents as well as make some splashes. According to Over the Cap, they should have around $44 million in space.

Carolina has already signed linebacker Shaq Thompson to a long-term deal. Next, they’ll have to pay to keep key defensive pieces like cornerback James Bradberry, outside linebacker Mario Addison and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.  If there’s enough to go shopping after, some intriguing names include A.J. Green, Yannick Ngakoue and Hunter Henry.

Pete Carroll could see Quandre Diggs’ potential at free safety

Defensive back guru Pete Carroll struck again when he saw Quandre Diggs’ potential to play free safety, a move that paid off for Seattle.

When all is said and done, the legacy of Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll will be his ability to create elite secondaries. The Legion of Boom was a perfect combination of late round draft steals and Carroll’s simple, yet difficult to stop, defensive schemes.

Although the LOB is long gone, the Seahawks are already proving they can still pack a punch in the secondary, and a big part of that success recently has been the team’s acquisition of Quandre Diggs.

Diggs was acquired from the Lions, along with a seventh round pick, for a fifth rounder. He was having a rather pedestrian year with Detroit, playing primarily strong safety. He had previous experience as a nickel back as well, but Carroll saw what few (if any) others saw: how his skill set would translate into a cover-3 free safety in his defense.

“I thought you could see it,” Carroll said of Diggs’ potential at free safety. “There’s indications that you can see over his time playing, that he’s just a really good, natural football player. He makes good decisions, he goes for stuff, and he’s aggressive. There’s guys that I’ve coached before – and you guys have seen how Earl [Thomas] played, and if you go back to Troy Polamalu and those guys – they have a different mentality than some other players. They look for the opportunity to for it and they trust themselves because they’ve done it before, and they’ve had the experience. I’ve tried to tell you guys about that, and he is one of those guys.”

Diggs may not be the player that Earl Thomas is, but he certainly possesses that same mentality, aggressiveness and high football IQ that made Thomas the catalyst of Seattle’s Legion of Boom.

Carroll’s ability to see that in an opposing player, who was playing a different position, is a skill that has helped him maintain a solid defensive backfield for the entirety of his career, even when they churn through players at the highest level.

Diggs is next in line for the Seahawks, and while Carroll won’t divulge too much of his secrets, it’s very clear he has a high affinity for Diggs’ play so far.

“He’s not the biggest, the fastest; he’s just a really good football player and he’s tough as hell,” Carroll continued. “It shows up in numbers of ways, it’s not just any one aspect. He’s playing well across the board; fitting in on the run, making his hits in the passing game, and defending the ball down the field. I think we’re lucky to have him.”

Diggs and the Seahawks will head to Carolina to take on the Panthers in their final road game of the season on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 10:00 a.m. PT.

Jadeveon Clowney will have to fight to play in Week 15

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is fighting to keep playing this season, despite pain in his abdomen.

Seattle Seahawks star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney decided to forego surgery on his core for a sports hernia related injury, and will instead try to play through the injury for the rest of the season.

Clowney made it through the first week, playing 41 defensive snaps on Sunday night against the Rams, but coach Pete Carroll already knows it will be tough for him to be ready for Week 15 against the Panthers.

“He’s hurting,” Carroll stated on Monday. “He’s going to have to work his way through the week to make it for game day. He’s playing really tough under the circumstances. He’s got some core issues that he’s working with, but he’s making it through. He’s toughing it out, doing rehab and all that stuff.”

Clowney wasn’t able to generate much pressure on Sunday against the Rams, only recording two combined tackles on the night. However, his presence is of the utmost importance to this team going forward.

The Seahawks certainly don’t want to risk him aggravating his injury and having to miss the rest of the season and the playoffs, so expect him to be a limited participant in practices for the rest of the year, and a frequently listed player on the injury report.

Report: Cam Newton underwent foot surgery on Monday

According to a report by Joe Person at the Athletic, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton underwent surgery to repair his Lisfranc injury on Monday.

According to a report by Joe Person at the Athletic, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton underwent surgery to repair his Lisfranc injury on Monday. The same doctor that did the Achilles procedure for Kevin Durant performed Newton’s operation.

The story of Newton’s foot injury is well-known by now. What this procedure means for Newton’s future is the real question.

Team owner David Tepper has said no decision will be made about the quarterback situation until Newton is 100%. The Panthers still have him under contract for one more year and if he is healthy then his cap hit for 2020 ($21.1 million) is relatively low for a franchise QB.

Of course, franchise quarterbacks very rarely actually get into the final year of their contracts. Newton may not want to play unless he gets an extension, which would make an already complicated situation even moreso.

The Panthers have a strong backup option in Kyle Allen, but Newton remains the best QB on the roster. As recently as one year ago, he was playing at a high level. Carolina’s best hope of contending in 2020 is likely with Newton pulling off an Andrew Luck in 2018 kind of comeback. An extra season off to recover from the punishment his body has taken these last eight years could be just the thing he needed.

2020 NFL draft: Panthers currently on pace to pick at No. 12

2020 NFL draft: Panthers currently on pace to pick at No. 12

The Carolina Panthers have lost five straight and six of their last seven games. The streak has dropped them to third place in the NFC South and raised serious questions about the team’s future.

On the bright side, all that losing has helped their draft position immensely. Heading into Week 15, Carolina is currently on pace to pick at No. 12 overall.

Here’s a look at the updated 2020 NFL draft order.

1. Cincinnati Bengals (1-12)
2. New York Giants (2-11)
3. Washington Redskins (3-10)
4. Miami Dolphins (3-10)
5. Detroit Lions (3-9-1)
6. Arizona Cardinals (3-9-1)
7. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-9)
8. Atlanta Falcons (4-9)
9. New York Jets (5-8)
10. Los Angeles Chargers (5-8)
11. Denver Broncos (5-8)
12. Carolina Panthers (5-8)
13. Philadelphia Eagles (6-7)
14. Oakland Raiders (6-7)
15. Indianapolis Colts (6-7)
16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-7)
17. Cleveland Browns (6-7)
18. Oakland Raiders (7-6) (via Bears)
19. Tennessee Titans (8-5)
20. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-9) (via Rams)

21. Dallas Cowboys (6-7)
22. Miami Dolphins (8-5) (via Steelers)
23. Miami Dolphins (8-5) (via Texans)
24. Minnesota Vikings (9-4)
25. Buffalo Bills (9-4)
26. Kansas City Chiefs (9-4)
27. Green Bay Packers (10-3)
28. Seattle Seahawks (10-3)
29. New England Patriots (10-3)
30. New Orleans Saints (10-3)
31. Baltimore Ravens (11-2)
32. San Francisco 49ers (11-2)

Tanking might seem like a reasonable idea to the average fan. However, if anything the Dolphins’ season proves that NFL teams simply don’t do it. Then again, sometimes it comes naturally.

As presently constructed, these Panthers aren’t going to beat the Seahawks or the Saints. Defeating the Colts is a possibility but it’s difficult to feel confident about their chances against any team right now.

Panthers open 5.5-point underdogs vs. Seahawks for Week 15 matchup

The Panthers head into Week 15 in a tailspin.

The Panthers head into Week 15 in a tailspin. They have dropped five games in a row and six of seven going back to their blowout loss to the 49ers. Next up on the schedule: another NFC West heavyweight.

According to BetMGM, the Panthers are 5.5-point underdogs at home for this week’s game against the Seahawks.

That number represents a hard truth. Injuries have played a major role, but this team has seriously under-performed given the expectations heading into the 2019 season. It’s already cost coach Ron Rivera his job and more serious changes are certainly on the way soon.

As for Seattle, this isn’t the same team Panthers fans might be used to. Linebackers Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright are the only remaining familiar faces for what was an all-time defense only a few years ago. New pieces like Jadeveon Clowney and Quandre Diggs have paid off and kept the unit strong enough to remain competitive. These Seahawks are carried by the brilliance of Russell Wilson, though. He’s having his best season yet and deserves to finish No. 2 in the MVP vote behind Lamar Jackson.

Another reason to trust those odds is recent history has not been kind to Carolina in this matchup. The Panthers beat the Seahawks twice in that magical 2015 season. Other than that, it’s been all failure. Seattle has won every other game in this series since Pete Carroll became head coach.

Panthers fall 5 more spots in Week 15 power rankings

Following another humiliating loss to the Falcons (40-20) on Sunday, Doug Farrar has dropped Carolina five more spots.

The Panthers peaked in our Touchdown Wire power rankings not too long ago, reaching the No. 7 spot and threatening to move up into the elite tier of teams. A five-game losing streak has officially eliminated them from the playoff picture and made it clear they were never a contender to begin with.

Following another humiliating loss to the Falcons (40-20) on Sunday, Doug Farrar has dropped Carolina five more spots. The Panthers head into Week 15 at No. 23 in the rankings.

“. . . Nor was Allen’s day — he completed 28 of 41 passes for 293 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against an Atlanta defense that has been highly vulnerable through most of the season. The Panthers are due for a major offseason blow-up to rebuild, and this game made that very clear.”

If you’re looking for a silver lining, the Panthers have improved their position in the 2020 NFL draft. This latest loss has them in line to pick at No. 12 overall.

As for what they’ll do with that first-round pick – wherever it falls – it’s anybody’s guess. This current roster has more holes than a cheese grater. We also don’t know if Cam Newton will be back next year nor who will be coaching the team. The defense needs a serious infusion of young talent and the offensive line remains a mess.

Perry Fewell: Panthers will start Kyle Allen at QB vs. Seahawks

Old habits die hard, though and NFL players and coaches are paid to win games.

The Panthers have been eliminated from the playoff picture for the 2019 season. That inevitability has been obvious for several weeks, but now it’s official thanks to Minnesota’s win over Detroit on Sunday.

Now that they’re totally out for this season, Carolina should turn its attention to the future. Old habits die hard, though and NFL players and coaches are paid to win games. That’s why they’ll continue to roll with Kyle Allen starting at quarterback this week against the Seahawks, per interim head coach Perry Fewell.

While it’s probably true Allen gives Carolina (and Fewell) the best chance to win games, it’s not necessarily the best thing for the team.

Allen has established himself as a solid if not spectacular backup since Cam Newton went on injured reserve. He hasn’t remotely made a case he should be the franchise quarterback of the future. Like most backups, Allen is inconsistent and too prone to committing turnovers.

Allen’s pass protection has been atrocious over the last month and he’s taken 21 sacks during that time. Still, he hasn’t shown enough improvement to move the needle on the QB1 question. In fact, in some ways he’s gotten worse as the season has progressed.

It’s true the rookie Will Grier might not be any better. In fact, he could be even worse based on what we saw during the preseason. However, he deserves a chance to show he can improve at some point this year. Otherwise, the team just completely wasted a third-round draft pick.

This issue might not be settled yet, though. Fewell also told reporters that the QB situation will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. Perhaps if Allen bombs against Seattle Grier will finally get a shot.

NFC playoff picture: The Panthers are officially eliminated

There are still three weeks left to go in the regular season, but the Panthers have officially been eliminated from playoff contention.

There are still three weeks left to go in the regular season, but the Panthers have officially been eliminated from playoff contention. Their own embarrassing loss to the Falcons was bad enough. It was the Vikings’ victory over the Lions that made it official, though.

Here’s where things stand in the NFC playoff picture heading into Monday night’s game between the Eagles and Giants.

Playoff teams

1. San Francisco 49ers (11-2)
2. Green Bay Packers (10-3)
3. New Orleans Saints (10-3)
4. Dallas Cowboys (6-7)
5. Seattle Seahawks (10-3)
6. Minnesota Vikings (9-4)

Still in the race

7. Los Angeles Rams (8-5)
8. Chicago Bears (7-6)
9. Philadelphia Eagles (5-7)

The Eagles can still catch Dallas for that No. 4 seed but they are running out of time. A win tonight against an awful New York team with Eli Manning starting again is an absolute must.

Seattle’s loss to the Rams on Sunday night kept LA in the race for the No. 6 spot. Jared Goff has turned things around after a brutal stretch and put some pressure on Kirk Cousins and Minnesota to maintain that seed. The Vikings close out the regular season against the Chargers (away), Packers (home) and Bears (home). The Rams will face the Cowboys (away), 49ers (away) and Cardinals (home).
