Texans WR Will Fuller undergoes sports hernia surgery

Houston Texans receiver Will Fuller had sports hernia surgery to repair aggravation sustained to his groin in the AFC divisional playoff loss.

Houston Texans receiver Will Fuller is starting his offseason recovering from surgery.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the former 2016 first-round pick from Notre Dame underwent sports hernia surgery to repair injuries sustained to his groin during the regular season. Fuller aggravated these injuries during the 51-31 AFC divisional playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Jan. 12.

Though Fuller is expected to make a full recovery, the Texans could make a decision on the 25-year-old in the offseason. While Houston picked up his fifth-year option, a $10.1 million hit to the salary cap, the Texans wouldn’t suffer any dead money if they cut Fuller.

In the 2019 offseason, the organization cut former 2015 first-round cornerback Kevin Johnson, who they also picked up for a fifth-year option. Like Fuller, Johnson battled injuries throughout his time in Houston, and the organization chose to move on and save cap space rather than wait on a fifth season to produce different results.

Fuller has played in 42 of 64 games in his four-year career, catching 156 passes for 2,231 yards and 16 touchdowns. There is no denying that Fuller is a key part of the Texans’ passing game, but sometimes availability is a player’s best ability. The Texans and Fuller are hopeful this recent sports hernia surgery will be the start to a healthy and productive 2020.

Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to undergo core surgery

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is set to undergo core surgery to repair a sports hernia in the near future.

Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney proved to be an impactful addition to the roster this season, even playing through the pain of a core (sports hernia) injury in Seattle’s push for a playoff run.

After the initial diagnosis, Clowney had decided to wait until the end of the year before undergoing surgery to correct the problem. Now that Seattle’s season is over, Clowney is planning to do just that.

“Yes, he’s had surgery on the other side, and he said he wishes he had done it on both sides,” coach Pete Carroll said during his Monday press conference. “He’s got to get it done in the next few days or whatever. Next week, or something like that. It’s for a core injury.”

Clowney, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent, has expressed interest in re-signing with the Seahawks. His procedure, thankfully, shouldn’t keep him out of the action for long.

“It’s short,” Carroll explained. “Guys can make that back in six, seven weeks. Five, six weeks. It shouldn’t be a lasting recovery at all.”

Seattle has some decisions to make regarding free agents before the start of the new league year and a healthy Clowney could make a new deal all the more likely for the Seahawks.

Seahawks promote Ryan Neal, place Neiko Thorpe on injured reserve

The Seattle Seahawks placed Neiko Thorpe on the injured reserve and promoted safety Ryan Neal from the practice squad to take his place.

The Seattle Seahawks officially placed cornerback Neiko Thorpe (sports hernia) on the injured reserve, ending his season. Thorpe’s roster spot went to fellow defensive back Ryan Neal, who was promoted from the practice squad to take his place.

Neal was originally an undrafted free agent out of Southern Illinois. He spent time with the Falcons last season, appearing in one game, but has been on Seattle’s practice squad since Week 1 of the season.

He’ll likely take over as a special teams contributor for the Seahawks in place of Thorpe, who has served as the team’s special teams captain for the past few years.

Seattle also added running back Xavier Turner to the practice squad to take the place of Neal. Turner is added depth at running back, following the ACL injury suffered by Rashaad Penny on Sunday night.

Turner spent part of the preseason with the Seahawks, appearing in all four preseason games and rushing 17 times for 71 yards.

Penny is expected to be placed on the injured reserve, likely to clear room for offensive lineman Ethan Pocic to be activated from IR.

Jadeveon Clowney will have to fight to play in Week 15

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is fighting to keep playing this season, despite pain in his abdomen.

Seattle Seahawks star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney decided to forego surgery on his core for a sports hernia related injury, and will instead try to play through the injury for the rest of the season.

Clowney made it through the first week, playing 41 defensive snaps on Sunday night against the Rams, but coach Pete Carroll already knows it will be tough for him to be ready for Week 15 against the Panthers.

“He’s hurting,” Carroll stated on Monday. “He’s going to have to work his way through the week to make it for game day. He’s playing really tough under the circumstances. He’s got some core issues that he’s working with, but he’s making it through. He’s toughing it out, doing rehab and all that stuff.”

Clowney wasn’t able to generate much pressure on Sunday against the Rams, only recording two combined tackles on the night. However, his presence is of the utmost importance to this team going forward.

The Seahawks certainly don’t want to risk him aggravating his injury and having to miss the rest of the season and the playoffs, so expect him to be a limited participant in practices for the rest of the year, and a frequently listed player on the injury report.

Neiko Thorpe out for the season after having sports hernia surgery

Seattle Seahawks core special teamer Neiko Thorpe had surgery to repair a sports hernia, and will miss the rest of the 2019 season.

The Seattle Seahawks lost a key piece of their special teams unit after coach Pete Carroll announced on Friday that Neiko Thorpe had surgery for a sports hernia, and will miss the rest of the 2019 season.

“Neiko had surgery for an athletic hernia,” Carroll commented. “He is coming back from Philadelphia today. He will be done.”

Philadelphia is where Dr. William Meyers works. Dr. Meyers performed sports hernia surgeries on Doug Baldwin and Jarran Reed in the past year, and also visited with Jadeveon Clowney a few weeks ago when the Seahawks played the Eagles. It’s unclear if that’s why Thorpe was in Philadelphia, but it certainly adds up.

Thorpe appeared in seven games for the Seahawks this year, racking up four solo tackles. He did most of his work on the special teams, although he did play 13 defensive snaps against the Falcons in Week 8 as an injury replacement.

Carroll did not specify if Thorpe will be placed on the injured reserve, but it would make sense for the team to do so, as they will eventually need to clear a roster spot for Ethan Pocic to officially return from IR.

Jadeveon Clowney expected to play Sunday against Rams

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is practicing on Wednesday, a good sign he’ll be able to play Sunday against the Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks welcomed back defensive end Jadeveon Clowney on Monday night against the Vikings, after he missed the previous game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a core muscle injury.

Clowney recorded three solo tackles, one for a loss, and one quarterback hit on Monday, and his return was critical for a team that needs his presence in both the run game and the passing game.

Despite playing 78 percent of Seattle’s defensive snaps, Clowney appears to have recovered well and is in line to play again on Sunday night against the Rams in Los Angeles.

“He’s practicing today, and that’s a really good sign,” coach Pete Carroll said on Wednesday. “It’s a really good sign.”

Clowney’s addition has been instrumental in Seattle’s recent success on the defensive side of the ball, and they’ll need him to continue to be a disruptive force if they want to win out and secure a top seed, and a first round bye, in the crowded NFC.

Jadeveon Clowney will not undergo core muscle surgery for now

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney will hold off on surgery for his core muscle injury and try to manage it this season.

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been dealing with a nasty core muscle injury since the team’s Week 10 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Coach Pete Carroll has already gone on record stating that he is “counting on” the veteran edge rusher to play Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.

Clowney told reporters before practice on Friday that his health is improving. “I’m feeling better,” he said via ESPN. “Getting ready to go today. See how it’s going to go.”

Carroll had said earlier in the week Clowney would not be undergoing surgery immediately and the defensive end plans on holding off on a procedure for now.

“Not at this moment, I don’t,” he said. “That’s a good thing. I ain’t too worried about it. I’m feeling better today. Worry about tomorrow when it gets here. Live for today.”

Clowney is aware that he will likely have to deal with his injury throughout the rest of the season and is determined to finish the year on a good note. He expressed the team is on board with his game plan.

“Oh yeah. They know that,” he said. “Something we know, but got to finish this thing strong.”

The Seahawks will likely need Clowney to be healthy if they want to make a strong postseason run, so fans will hope that he can manage it for the rest of the regular season and beyond.

Pete Carroll is counting on Jadeveon Clowney making it back Week 13

Although he won’t practice Wednesday, coach Pete Carroll is counting on defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to be ready to face the Vikings.

The Seattle Seahawks have seen a vast improvement in their pass-rushing capabilities with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney on the field.

Clowney, who was inactive Week 12 against the Eagles with a hip/groin injury, saw a specialist ahead of the matchup in Philadelphia. Likely a sports hernia, Clowney isn’t facing surgery at this time, but will need to prove he’s healthy enough to play ahead of Monday night.

Coach Pete Carroll said Clowney won’t practice on Wednesday, but the team is counting on him to be ready to face the Vikings.

“Not a whole lot more other than we’re counting on him getting back,” Carroll said Wednesday. “We are – we are counting on him getting back, but he’s still gotta make it. So that’s the twinge of optimism there again.

“But he feels good about and he wants to go and he’s going to try to make it.”

The Seahawks have Thursday off for Thanksgiving but will practice Friday and Saturday to prepare for Minnesota.

Hernia issue not expected to keep Jadeveon Clowney out in Week 13

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll doesn’t expect Jadeveon Clowney, who is being treated for a sports hernia, to miss Monday night’s game.

The Seattle Seahawks managed another excellent defensive performance on Sunday, despite being without star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney missed the contest with what was listed as a hip injury. However, he visited with doctor William Meyers before the game, who typically treats sports hernia injuries, including performing surgery recently on both Doug Baldwin and Jarran Reed.

Coach Pete Carroll confirmed that, while Clowney was treated for a sports hernia, he did not have surgery (which typically comes with a six week recovery time) and that he is hoping to play on Monday.

“That’s what he was treated for,” Carroll said. “We’ll see how the treatment took hold. He feels pretty good today. I haven’t talked to him directly but he’s passed along that he’s looking forward to playing this week.”

Clowney was named the NFC defensive player of the week after his dominant performance against San Francisco in Week 10, but Seattle’s defensive line stepped up in his absence on Sunday against the Eagles, forcing three fumbles and recording three sacks.

If the rest of the unit can play that well with Clowney, this team should wreak havoc on Kirk Cousins and the Vikings on Monday Night Football, which is set to kick off at 5:15 p.m. on December 2nd.
