DE Carl Nassib could become key cog on Raiders defensive line

DE Carl Nassib could become key cog on Raiders defensive line

The Raiders made a bunch of big defensive signings in free agency this offseason, bringing in the likes of Cory Littleton, Maliek Collins and Nick Kwiatkoski. However, one move that has gone somewhat under the radar is the signing of veteran defensive end Carl Nassib.

In his last two seasons in Tampa Bay, Nassib became a key part of their defensive line. He started 17 games for the Buccaneers, totaling 12.5 sacks since 2018. While that number might not seem incredibly high, it’s worth noting that he’s played just 56 percent of the team’s defensive snaps during that time.

In a recent article by Pro Football Focus, Nassib was listed as a “name to watch” in the 2020 season due to his pass-rushing ability. Take a look at the site’s thoughts on Nassib with the Raiders:

Las Vegas will be hoping that the combination of Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell can maintain starting status throughout the year given Crosby’s strong rookie season and the fact that Ferrell was the fourth-overall pick in the NFL draft. Nassib is a solid albeit unexciting starting option if things don’t go according to plan, though. He has played 500 or more defensive snaps in each of the past three seasons, earning grades of 64.0 or higher each year. Nassib isn’t going to scare opposing quarterbacks, but he will provide stout play against the run.

Nassib is the perfect complement to Crosby and Ferrell as he can play either defensive end spots and is a proven veteran. While he isn’t an elite athlete, he has the size and length to play all across the defensive line.

When Rod Marinelli was the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, he always had one or two defensive linemen that could back up two or three spots. For the last several seasons, it’s been Tyrone Crawford and that player has become incredibly valuable on game day.

Nassib has a similar body as Crawford and both players can play defensive end or inside at defensive tackle on passing downs. While they may never receive a ton of praise for their play, it’s part of the reason the defense as a whole can have success. Having a competent “third” defensive end who can play multiple spots and generate pressure is key to having a great pass-rush.

While Nassib may not start for the Raiders in 2020, look for him to play around 55-60 percent of the defensive snaps as a rotational pass-rusher. And if he can replicate his production over the last two seasons, the Raiders stole one of the more underrated pass rushers in the NFL in free agency.

Contract details on DE Carl Nassib 3-year deal with Raiders

Contract details on DE Carl Nassib 3-year deal with Raiders

Tuesday, the Raiders brought in some pass rush help, signing former Buccaneers defensive end, Carl Nassib. And he got paid pretty handsomely.

Nassib gets a 3-year deal, worth $25 million with incentives that could bring it to as much as $28 million.

Keep in mind, just two years ago, Nassib was among the Browns roster cuts. The former third-round pick was then claimed off waivers by the Bucs and had 12.5 sacks, and 25 quarterback hits over the past two seasons.

While his average of $8.3 million per season isn’t crazy money for the position, that $17 million guaranteed was certainly have been enough to lure him in.

The Raiders continue to add to their defense as they have added former Tampa Bay Buccaneer defensive end Carl Nassib. Nassib recorded six sacks in each of the last two seasons for the Buccaneers and is one of the better defensive ends against the run.

Nassib is expected to play behind Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell and should be a big part of the team’s defensive line rotation. Look for Nassib to be the team’s third defensive end and even play some snaps at defensive tackle in nickel packages for the Raiders.

12 under-the-radar free agents for Bills to target on defense

12 free agents on defense for the Buffalo Bills to consider in free agency.

The NFL’s free agency period is slated to open on March 18 and the Buffalo Bills could be in business. The Bills signed cornerback Josh Norman this week, getting a head start on things.

But despite that signing, the Bills moved from the fourth-most to fifth-most salary cap space in the league, near $77.4 million, according to Spotrac. That’s a lot of room to move, and of course, room for big-named additions.

But in recent years, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott have had a thing for finding diamonds in the rough. Could the 2020 offseason have more of the same?

With that, here are 12 under-the-radar free agents on defense the Bills could consider adding:

Cowboys defensive tackle Maliek Collins. Credit: Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

DT Maliek Collins

Stats: 61 games played, 84 tackles, 14.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble

Based on reports of interest in certain players via the draft and free agency, the Bills are looking to add to their defensive tackle position. There’s Star Lotulelei and Ed Oliver highlighting the group, but depth can be added behind them.

Collins, a former third-round pick, is likely to leave the team that drafted him, the Cowboys. Collins is a versatile player who can jump in the 1-tech or 3-tech positions on the defensive line for the Bills, but he’s probably more suited for the three spot. His Pro Football Focus grade reflects that, as his overall mark was a 65.2 grade (64th best) but his pass-rushing mark was a 77.7.

Carl Nassib can now add ‘homeowner’ to his list of accomplishments

Take a look at the new home Buccaneers outside linebacker Carl Nassib recently purchased in Pennsylvania.

You can count Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Carl Nassib among those players who will hit the free agent market this offseason. What the future holds for Nassib in Tampa Bay remains to be seen, but he’s been a valuable member of this defense since coming over from the Cleveland Browns in 2018, collecting 12.5 sacks over the last two years.

While Nassib waits to see what the offseason brings, the man who lives on a strict budget and saves up to 85% of his income recently made a smart investment, and can now add ‘homeowner’ to his list of accomplishments.

The Buccaneers’ linebackers were a force to be reckoned with in 2019

Take a look at this highlight video from the Buccaneers showcasing the dominance of their pass rush this season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may not be taking part in the divisional round of the postseason this weekend, but, given how well they looked during the second half of the season, it wouldn’t surprise anyone to find them in the playoffs next year.

The Buccaneers have gone 12-straight seasons without a postseason trip, and haven’t won a playoff game since their victory over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII.

But this Bucs team has a new swagger to them, thanks in large part to the arrival of head coach Bruce Arians. The two-time NFL Coach of the Year has this team buying what he’s selling, and the results are starting to come together.

Tampa Bay’s defense, especially, had a big turnaround under Arians and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, jumping from 27th in 2018 to 15th this year, even ranking first in rush defense.

So, while we wait and see what the future holds for some of their unrestricted free agents, here’s a little highlight video from the Bucs showcasing the dominance of the team’s pass rush this year.

Enjoy.

Two Bucs ruled out for Sunday’s game vs. Falcons, Carl Nassib on track to return

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have ruled two players out for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Bucs are hoping to get Carl Nassib back on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, who have been one of the hottest teams in the NFL the past two weeks.

The Falcons, who started the season 1-7, have taken down both the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers on the road, outscoring them 55-12.

Tampa Bay is coming off a tough home loss to the Saints in Week 11, one in which quarterback Jameis Winston threw four interceptions, though you can pin one on tight end O.J. Howard.

Tampa Bay has yet to win back-to-back games this season. Another loss would send them to 3-8 and all but assure them of another losing record.

One thing to keep an eye out for early in the game Sunday is Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans, who needs just seven more yards to get to 1,000 on the season. It would be his sixth-straight 1,000 yard season, tying him with Hall of Famer Randy Moss for the most in NFL history to begin a career.

Buccaneers rule three players out for Sunday’s game vs. Saints

Bruce Arians says CB M.J. Stewart and OLBs Anthony Nelson and Carl Nassib have been ruled for Sunday’s game. – Scott Smith (@ScottSBucs) November 15, 2019 This is a bit late for a correction but I obviously left the word “out” out below. Those three …

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without cornerback M.J. Stewart and outside linebackers Anthony Nelson and Carl Nassib this Sunday when they take on the New Orleans Saints at home.

The good news for the Bucs is that head coach Bruce Arians believes cornerback Carlton Davis, who was limited in practice yesterday with a hip injury, will be ready to go on Sunday.

Tampa Bay will need Davis to help them contain Saints quarterback Drew Brees and receivers like Michael Thomas. The Bucs parted ways with former first-round pick and veteran cornerback Vernon Hargreaves earlier this week after his lack of hustle in last Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals, so a depleted secondary will need to step up since the Saints will no doubt look to exploit the Bucs’ greatest weakness. Hopefully, Davis will be back on the field to help.

Throwback Thursday: Carl Nassib goes full Michael Scott

Check out this Instagram post from Buccaneers pass rusher Carl Nassib, referencing his love for the TV show “The Office.”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hoping to get pass rusher Carl Nassib back this week in time for Sunday’s Week 11 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

Nassib, who has 3.0 sacks on the season, missed last week’s win over the Arizona Cardinals with a groin injury. But, he was a limited participant in practice yesterday, which is a positive sign.

In honor of Nassib’s (impending) return, we thought we’d do a throwback to Nassib and his love of “The Office.”

Anytime an athlete references “The Office” you have to pay respect.

For those wondering what Nassib is talking about, I give to you, “Threat Level Almost Midnight.”

Nassib’s return would be a big boost for the Buccaneers. Brees was sacked six times last week again the Atlanta Falcons, so this Bucs defense smells blood in the water.
