Titans worked out 2 other LBs before signing Ben Niemann

The Titans worked out two other linebackers on Monday before ultimately signing Ben Niemann.

The Tennessee Titans took a look at three different inside linebackers on Monday before settling on veteran and former Arizona Cardinal, Ben Niemann.

According to the league’s transactions wire, the other two linebackers Tennessee worked out were Nick Kwiatkoski and Tanner Vallejo.

Vallejo was actually a teammate of Niemann’s with the Cardinals in 2022. He appeared in 17 games (five starts) and tallied 37 tackles (two for loss), one pass defensed, one forced fumble and two QB hits.

Kwiatkoski spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons, where he played in 12 games (zero starts) and finished with seven combined tackles while playing only on special teams.

The addition of Niemann, who also has experience playing on special teams, gives the Titans another depth option behind projected starters Azeez Al-Shaair and Monty Rice.

Niemann will be competing for one of the backup spots in training camp, along with Chance Campbell, Luke Gifford and Jack Gibbens.

2023 NFL free agency: Ranking 9 linebacker options for Seahawks

The 2023 NFL draft is probably the best place to find Wagner’s long-term successor, but there are also some free agents worth looking at.

The Seahawks had a great linebacker. Then they decided to let him go, without so much as an offer of a pay-cut. Their loss was the Rams’ gain – and Bobby Wagner immediately recaptured his peak form and once again became the league’s best off-ball linebacker. Now, Seattle has to find a way to replace him because their own two starters couldn’t even crack the top 100 PFF grades at their position.

The 2023 NFL draft is probably the best place to find Wagner’s long-term successor, but there are also some free agents worth looking at. Here are eight nine the Seahawks could consider.

Update:

The Rams have released Bobby Wagner, just one year into the five-year deal he signed last March. Obviously that radically changes the linebacker market as well as the order of our list.

Former Raiders LB Nick Kwiatkoski signs on with Falcons

After visiting the Raiders earlier this week, Nick Kwiatkoski gets his reunion but it isn’t with his former team in Las Vegas

Less than two months ago, the Raiders cut Nick Kwiatkoski, saving some $3.24 million against the cap and leaving behind $5 million in dead money. Now the former starter has finally found a new home.

Kwiatkoski had visited the Raiders most recently, in what looked like a potential return. But after testing the Las Vegas reunion waters, the former starter decided a reunion with his former GM in Chicago was his best option. Or perhaps his trip to visit his former team upped the Falcons’ offer.

Meanwhile the Raiders signed free agent Kenny Young instead.

The Raiders cleaned some house at linebacker this offseason, taking on a good deal of dead money in the process.

All three 2020 starters Kwiatkoski, Cory Littleton, and Nicholas Morrow were let go, while they added competition in the form of Young, Jayon Brown, Micah Kiser, and Kyler Fackrell.

Last season starters Denzel Perryman and Divine Deablo return as well.

Falcons sign LB Nick Kwiatkoski to one-year deal, per report

The Atlanta Falcons are signing free-agent LB Nick Kwiatkoski to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The Atlanta Falcons are signing free-agent linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski to a one-year deal, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Thursday.

The 28-year-old played his college ball at West Virginia before being drafted in the fourth round by the Chicago Bears in 2016. Kwiatkoski worked out for the Falcons last week and now joins a somewhat crowded group at inside linebacker.

After spending four seasons in Chicago (2016-2019), he moved on to Las Vegas to play for the Raiders in 2020 and 2021.

According to Pro Football Focus, Kwiatkoski’s best season came in 2017 when he earned an overall defensive grade of 80.5. Over a six-year NFL career, the veteran linebacker has racked up 286 tackles (205 solo), seven sacks and six forced fumbles.

Falcons met with free-agent LB Nick Kwiatkoski, per report

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Falcons visited with free-agent linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski on Thursday.

The Atlanta Falcons have added over 20 players since last Thursday if you count their eight-player draft class and 13 undrafted free agents.

Despite signing Rashaan Evans and drafting Troy Andersen in the second round, the Falcons visited with free-agent linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski on Thursday, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Kwiatkoski, 28, was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round of the 2016 draft out of West Virginia. During his first four seasons with the Bears, Kwiatkoski played in 57 games with 22 starts. He spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, making 12 starts.

Raiders injury updates: Linebackers, Richie Incognito, Marcus Mariota, more

Raiders injury updates: Linebackers, Richie Incognito, Marcus Mariota, more

Suddenly the Raiders are banged up. Particularly at the linebacker position. They had Nicholas Morrow go down in practice this week, Nick Kwiatkoski was already sidelined, and in this game Javin White went down with a knee injury and was carted off the field.

After the game, Jon Gruden gave several injury updates, first and foremost to his linebacking corps.

“There’s a concern obviously with Nick Morrow. His foot is being evaluated,” said Gruden. “And Javin White looks like he hurt his knee. So, we were out a couple linebackers. [Darron] Lee couldn’t play tonight so we’re light at linebacker right now. It’s a concern. [Nick Kwiatkoski] is going to be ok, We think he’s going to be ready to go this week, but he couldn’t go tonight.”

White’s injury during the game tonight looks like it could be especially serious.

“I don’t want to come to any conclusions, but we’re going to evaluate him and he’s got to get the X-rays, but we are concerned,” Gruden added of White.

Others who might have played tonight, but were held out due to health concerns include Damon Arnette, Karl Joseph, and Marcus Mariota. Gruden didn’t give any specifics on Arnette, but I asked him about why Mariota was suited up, but didn’t go.

“He’s just not ready to go, physically,” Gruden said of Mariota. “He competed against the Rams (in scrimmages), but he’s limited, we’re not calling plays for him right now with the limitation. He’s got a quad strain. We think he’s got a chance to play against the 49ers, but the way he plays, we do not want to get him out in a live situation and let him cut it loose, he’s just not ready to go. He was ready tonight on an emergency basis, but right now he’s just not ready to go.”

And finally, there is the status of Richie Incognito who went down in practice Thursday almost simultaneously to when Morrow went down on the opposite field.

“We think he has a calf strain and we hope he’s ready for the opener,” Gruden said of Incognito. “But we don’t believe it’s serious, not Achilles tendon related at all. But it’s a calf injury and we’ll keep you updated, but right now he’ll be out for at least a week or so.”

Should Incognito not be ready for the season opener, John Simpson would step in for him at left guard.

Two interceptions by Raiders LB Nick Kwiatkoski upends ‘hell of a camp’ by Marcus Mariota

Two picks by Nick Kwiatkoski upends ‘hell of a camp’ by Marcus Mariota

Tuesday was the first day in pads for the Raiders. Had it not been, it would have felt like a serious deja vu moment when linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski stepped up and picked off a Marcus Mariota pass over the middle. Because it was the second day in a row he had done it. And both of the picks looked identical.

The interceptions were so easy and out of place, Jon Gruden is not so sure something else might be going on.

“That’s the only two interceptions we’ve thrown here and I think Marcus and Nick are roommates, I don’t know what the deal is,” Gruden said with a twinkle in his eye.

“Mariota was off to a great start yesterday and, he looks like the Galloping Ghost out there. And then today he throws four incredible passes. I think he and Nick are probably having a beer down at Caesar’s Palace right now. I don’t know what the hell that’s all about.

“Nick is a good player. You’re in zone coverage, you’re reading the quarterback, and he telegraphed both of those throws. It’s really kept him away from having one hell of a camp. And he is having a good camp, but he could be having an outstanding camp had it not been for a couple interceptions.”

Kwiatkoski denied any kind of conspiracy was going on between him and Mariota. But, then again, he would deny it.

“I don’t know what he meant by that,” Kwiatkoski said of Gruden’s comment about them being roommates. “But I think Marcus is a little bit mad at me right now. I mess with him after practice, but it’s all in fun.”

Nick went on to joke that he and Mariota “Might have to think about that for next week and make a plan.”

In all seriousness, Mariota has had some great days in this year’s camp, as I had covered after Saturday’s practice. And Gruden is putting in plays specially for the ‘Flyin’ Hawaiian’.

Meanwhile, Kwiatkoski has been splitting time between first and second-team reps with Nicholas Morrow, though both are expected to play key roles in the linebacking corps this season. Morrow is seen as a better coverage linebacker, but Kwiatkoski can clearly hold his own in that arena.

“The league’s changing,” Kwiatkoski said of the importance of being good in coverage. “You have tight ends, running backs who are all receivers now, so being able to cover running backs, cover receivers, dropping back in pass coverage and being a factor in the pass game, it adds a lot to your game.”

For what it’s worth, Kwiatkoski has two career interceptions, one in each of the past two seasons. Mariota would be wise not to stare down his receivers and become blind to Nick’s presence over the middle. Or find a new roommate.

5 Raiders the Colts must game plan for in Week 14

Keep an eye on these Raiders.

The Indianapolis Colts (8-4) travel west to take on the Las Vegas Raiders (7-5) in a must-win game for both sides. The Colts hope to keep pace with the Titans in the AFC South, while also holding onto their wild card spot. The Raiders are on the outside looking in, which gives them even more incentive to pick up a win.

Jon Gruden’s team has struggled in recent weeks with injuries on both sides of the ball. After narrowly beating the Jets last week, the Raiders are trying to salvage their season and make a playoff push.

The injury to Josh Jacobs will be one to monitor as it isn’t clear whether he will play. If he were to make it onto the field Sunday, he would be the top player to game plan for.

Here are five Raiders the Colts must game plan for in Week 14:

Chicago Bears’ 6 biggest losses during the 2020 offseason

The Bears have made some changes this offseason, which will affect how Chicago’s roster pans out this season.

Following a disappointing 2019 season, the Chicago Bears will be looking to rebound heading into the 2020 season. But they’ll be doing it without some familiar faces on their roster.

The Bears have made some changes this offseason, which will affect how Chicago’s roster pans out this season. There were some expected departures, including outside linebacker Leonard Floyd and tight end Trey Burton. But not all of those losses serve to benefit the Bears.

Here are the Bears’ six biggest losses this offseason:

Nick Kwiatkoski was a big reason why the Bears defense remained a dominant force following a season-ending injury to Danny Trevathan in Week 10. Kwiatkoski shined in relief of an injured Trevathan, where he tallied 76 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four pass deflections. Ultimately, the Bears chose to re-sign Trevathan over Kwiatkoski, and Chicago lost valuable depth at inside linebacker. Kwiatkoski’s impressive performance earned him a three-year, $21 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, which includes $13.75 million guaranteed.

Nick Kwiatkoski had ‘no idea’ how his free agency would pan out

Nick Kwiatkoski was aware the Bears weren’t going to keep both him and Danny Trevathan. But he wasn’t sure how free agency would pan out.

When inside linebacker Danny Trevathan went down with a season-ending elbow injury, Nick Kwiatkoski stepped up in his absence and wound up being one of the Chicago Bears’ best defensive players in 2019.

Kwiatkoski had a career season with the Bears last year, where he started the final seven games in place of Trevathan and tallied 76 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four pass deflections.

“Our linebacker room last year, we did a great job of preparing as one like we’re all playing,” Kwiatkoski said, via The Athletic. “That helped a lot. Just going into each game week like, ‘Hey, you might be in, so let’s prepare like it.’ That’s the mindset I took all last year. And then I got the opportunity.”

Kwiatkoski’s impressive performance made him a favorite to earn a big deal in free agency. The only question was whether or not that deal would come from Chicago or someone else.

According The Athletic, Kwiatkoski was aware that the Bears weren’t going to keep both him and Danny Trevathan. But he wasn’t sure how free agency would pan out for him — whether that meant staying in Chicago or going elsewhere.

“It was a unique situation in Chicago and, honestly, I had no idea,” Kwiatkoski said. “As it came closer to free agency, it kind of played itself out and I knew I was going to have to go somewhere else.”

Ultimately, Kwiatkoski did wind up landing a big free-agent deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Raiders, which includes $13.75 million guaranteed.
