Saints pick their quarterback of the future in this 2025 mock draft

Step aside, Derek Carr (plus Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler). This 2025 NFL mock draft has the New Orleans Saints spending a first-round pick on a new quarterback: Miami Hurricanes senior transfer Cameron Ward, formerly of the Washington State Cougars. That’s the choice Draft Wire’s Curt Popejoy made for the Saints, who slotted in at No. 11 using the latest projected standings.

Ward’s name has been connected to the Saints for a few years now. He was linked to New Orleans in a midseason mock draft back in 2022, though he ultimately stayed in school. Wazzu went 5-7 last year, and Ward transferred to Miami in January in hopes of winning a championship. He was effective in both years with the Cougs while making some solid improvements to his game. But the hope is that a stronger supporting cast on the Hurricanes can help Ward reach even greater heights in his senior year.

It wouldn’t be too surprising to see the Saints draft a quarterback in this spot next year. If they’re picking tenth overall, they probably lost enough games in 2024 for general manager Mickey Loomis to finally pull the plug on his Dennis Allen experiment. With Allen going out the door goes Carr’s biggest advocate. Haener and Rattler may have some talent but neither of them is going to keep the Saints’ next coach from drafting a starting quarterback in the first round.

So what becomes of Carr? His 2025 salary cap hit has grown to $51,458,000 including a $30 million base salary and $10 million roster bonus. If Allen is still the coach in 2025 the Saints are likely to restructure Carr’s contract by converting most of his salary and that roster bonus into a new signing bonus; that’s the same move they pulled this year, and it would save them more than $30.9 million while keeping Carr in place as the team’s starter. Carr has a no-trade clause written into his contract, so that’s off the table, but an outright release would nearly break even.

Just looking at the numbers, it suggests Carr will still be starting under center in 2025, and we shouldn’t expect the Saints to draft his replacement (especially if Allen remains their coach). If they end up with the eleventh pick without moving on from Allen or Carr, another position may make more sense than quarterback. But if the Saints have a head coach they claim to believe in and a quarterback he’s determined to start, and they’re still bad enough to be picking at No. 11, then what are we doing here? Maybe drafting Ward to prep him for a reboot with their next coach is the move after all.

Most intriguing transfer portal quarterbacks for Ohio State

Who are the most interesting quarterbacks in the transfer portal that fit what Ohio State is looking for?

We’re all watching and waiting on what the Ohio State football team will do with the transfer portal this time around. Before all of that, it makes sense to examine where things stand with the quarterback position.

I want to make sure that it is very clear this list is not the top transfer portal quarterbacks, but the most intriguing. I am also glad I waited to write this piece, despite some of the guys on the list committing to other schools, because we do have a much clearer idea of what this coaching staff is looking for if they were to add a gunslinger in the portal.

Ryan Day didn’t make any insane decisions immediately, because it appears he has a ton of faith in the current quarterback room of Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz. There are no doubt some potential recruits the staff is excited about as well. I respect that.

It looks like Day isn’t going to make a move unless the guy is older with starting experience and is a clear and obvious upgrade over what is in the room, but the five quarterbacks below are guys in the portal I thought would be an interesting addition and where things stand.

On3 predicts Ohio State to land top quarterback transfer

After news hit on Monday morning that Ohio State’s starting quarterback Kyle McCord was entering the transfer portal, rumors swirled about the Buckeyes looking to the portal for a quarterback.

Luckily for the Buckeyes the options for quarterbacks in the transfer portal this year are very strong. The list includes quarterbacks with multiple years of starting experience as well as young, former highly recruited quarterbacks.

On3’s J.D. Pickell predicted where the top quarterbacks in the transfer portal would end up. Most notable for Ohio State fans: Pickell predicted the Buckeyes would land Washington State transfer Cameron Ward.

Ward is a four-year starter for Washington State who had his best season in 2023 throwing for 3,723 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 384 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

With it seeming likely Ohio State will bring in a quarterback from the transfer portal, Ward is a name to keep an eye on.

Cameron Ward enters transfer portal but could still declare for the draft

Ward left his options open after leaving Washington State. If he declares, Ward projects in the middle rounds of the 2024 NFL draft

Cameron Ward is leaving Washington State. That much we know. Where the dynamic quarterback lands next remains to be seen.

Ward announced he is entering the transfer portal. However, he left open the possibility that he will instead declare for the 2024 NFL draft.

“After a lot of reflection, I will be evaluating entering the 2024 NFL draft as well as intending to enter my name into the transfer portal as a grad transfer,” Ward wrote in a social media post.

If he declares, Ward currently projects in the middle rounds — pending athletic testing and interviews. The 6-foot-2 Ward completed 67 percent of his passes in 2023, tossing 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Ward previously transferred to Washington State from Incarnate Word after the 2021 season.

Washington State QB Cam Ward enters transfer portal

Washington State Cougars quarterback Cameron Ward has announced that he plans to enter the transfer portal.

One of the more significant entries to the transfer portal arose on Friday: Washington State Cougars’ quarterback Cameron Ward announced he is looking for a new team.

Ward is expected to be one of the most coveted players in the portal this offseason. He had a stellar two years in Pullman following an electric stint with Incarnate Word.

This past year, Ward threw for 3,736 yards and 25 touchdowns for the Cougars with just 7 interceptions and 66.6% completion. In his career at WSU, he has almost 7,000 yards, 48 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He also added 202 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground in his two years in Pullman as well.

In two seasons at the Football Championship Subdivision level Incarnate Word before transferring to WSU, Ward had a total of 71 TDs and 14 interceptions. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

This portal entry is significant for Oregon Duck fans because there is a chance Dan Lanning and Will Stein be in the market for a new QB this offseason. With Bo Nix leaving for the NFL, the 2024 QB1 spot is open. Ty Thompson, Austin Novosad, Michael Van Buren and Luke Moga are expected to compete for it. At the moment, Thompson has the best chance of that group to get the starting job, but it would not be a surprise to see the Ducks get a veteran QB out of the portal to compete for that starting spot.

Don’t be shocked if Ward ends up being that guy.

BREAKING: Washington State QB Cam Ward announces transfer to Oregon Ducks

The Ducks have a new QB in the mix for 2024. Former Washington State QB Cameron Ward is coming to Eugene.

Another year, another transfer portal QB option for the Oregon Ducks.

Former Washington State quarterback Cam Ward is coming to Eugene.

With former Auburn QB Bo Nix heading off to the NFL this year following a historic stint at Oregon, the Ducks will once again be going to the transfer portal market to get a potential signal-caller for the 2024 season.

This past year, Ward threw for 3,736 yards and 25 touchdowns for the Cougars with just 7 interceptions and 66.6% completion. In his career at WSU, he has almost 7,000 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. He’s also added 202 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground in his two years in Pullman as well.

In two seasons at the FCS level Incarnate Word before transferring to WSU, Ward had a total of 71 TDs and 14 interceptions. He currently has one year of eligibility remaining.

While Ward will likely be the favorite to win the starting QB job in Eugene, he will have to compete with the likes of Ty Thompson, Austin Novosad, Michael Van Buren, and Luke Moga before winning the top job.

Ward also continues the long line of transfer portal QBs to come to Eugene, which over the years has included Nix, Anthony Brown, Dakota Prukop, and Vernon Adams, among others.

5 prospects on the spot on rivalry weekend

Rivalry games figure to be a proving ground for these five 2024 NFL draft prospects

The final weekend of the regular season of college football is rivalry weekend. Teams playing their biggest rivals makes all the games intense, even those that appear to be lopsided mismatches on paper.

Oregon QB Bo Nix kicked it off nicely in leading his Ducks to a Civil War win over Oregon State. Here are five other prospects for the 2024 NFL draft who are on the spot to deliver on rivalry weekend.

9 Major Takeaways: Oregon rolls to a 38-24 win behind Bucky Irving’s big game

The Ducks rushed for almost 250 yards in a decisive win over Washington State, but have several things to improve on going forward.

The Oregon Ducks needed a win like this.

After their brutal loss to the Washington Huskies a week ago, Dan Lanning and his team were in need of a bounce-back opportunity, one in which they got tested, for certain, but never really had the outcome placed in doubt.

That’s what they got on Saturday afternoon in front of a sold-out Autzen Stadium as the Ducks rolled to a 38-24 win over the Washington State Cougars. The number on the scoreboard looks closer than the game really was, with Cameron Ward and the Cougars adding a late touchdown with 52 seconds left in the game to make it a respectable score, and ultimately cover the betting spread.

There were some ups and downs in this game and a lot of things that it’s clear Oregon needs to clean up over the next week before going to Salt Lake City to face a dangerous Utah team.

Here are some of our major takeaways from the Ducks’ sixth victory of the year:

5 Washington State Cougars to watch out for this Saturday

5 Washington State Cougars to watch out for this Saturday

The Oregon Ducks are coming off of one of their toughest losses in recent memory, but they won’t continue to focus on Washington. Instead, they’re looking to the Huskies in-state rivals down in Pullman.

Washington State has dropped their last two games — first to UCLA and then to Arizona. While they’ve been struggling, they are still a talented team and will be looking to regain some momentum for their season against Oregon. Furthermore, the Ducks mounted a monster comeback against the Cougars in 2022, so Washington State will be looking to exact revenge in Eugene on Saturday.

While the Cougars are full of talented players, I’ve picked the five that I think can/will have the biggest impact on the outcome of Saturday’s game. These are definitely names you’ll want to know for Week 8 in Eugene.
