Ty Thompson’s roster is adding some highly-rated players at Tulane

Former Oregon Ducks quarterback Ty Thompson is seeing some nice additions via the transfer portal at Tulane.

The Tulane Green Wave has been seeing some great success over the past several years, and the fan base has been growing quickly.

An influx of fans came from the Pacific Northwest this offseason when former Oregon Ducks’ quarterback Ty Thompson announced his transfer to Tulane, giving a fan favorite a chance to show what he can do at long last.

It’s become pretty apparent that Tulane is doing a lot of work to build the roster around Thompson, making some major additions via the transfer portal. On Monday, the Green Wave got commitments from former USC WR Mario Williams, as well as former Alabama WR Shazz Preston.

Williams has 9 touchdowns over the last two seasons with USC. Preston was a 4-star recruit in the class of 2022, rated as the No. 56 player in the nation.

Tulane had a solid 2023 season, going 11-3 and 8-1 in the AAC. Assuming that Thompson — a former high-end 4-star recruit — can play to his expected ceiling, the Green Wave could be a very fun team to watch in the future.

Iowa Hawkeyes reportedly hosting Oregon Ducks transfer QB Ty Thompson

Could the Hawkeyes be looking outside of their building? Reports are that Iowa is hosting Oregon QB Ty Thompson for a visit.

Could the Iowa Hawkeyes and Kirk Ferentz be at it again in the transfer portal? It appears there may be some traction as of lately.

Reported by David Eickholt of 247Sports, the Hawkeyes are hosting Oregon Ducks transfer quarterback Ty Thompson on a visit this coming Friday, Jan. 5. Iowa has not been active yet in looking outside their program as there was intent and focus to keep guys in the black and gold.

Ty Thompson, an Arizona native, has spent three years out in Eugene, Ore., as a member of the Ducks. While all signs point to the Midwest for Thompson, there are deeper ties to the Midwest that lead back to his recruitment and specific ties to those close to Iowa.

Here is a look at Ty Thompson’s recruiting profile, his vitals, and his time at Oregon. We also dive into what this could do to Iowa’s quarterback room and what it could mean for bigger dominos to fall.

‘Once a Duck, always a Duck;’ Ty Thompson sends parting message to Oregon fans

Oregon Ducks quarterback Ty Thompson sent a parting message to fans after entering the transfer portal on Monday.

A bit of expected, albeit difficult news, came Sunday afternoon: Oregon Ducks quarterback Ty Thompson announced his intention to enter the transfer portal.

After spending three seasons with the Ducks in a backup role, Thompson is looking for a better situation, one in which he can see more of the field.

As a true freshman, Thompson was the backup for transfer Anthony Brown. He spent his redshirt freshman and redshirt sophomore years as a backup to Bo Nix in Eugene. Throughout his Oregon career, Thompson completed 42-of-66 passes for 456 yards, 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.

It was expected he would be in line to win the starting job for the Ducks in 2024 with Nix leaving Oregon for the NFL. That obviously will not be the case in the wake of Dillon Gabriel committing to the Ducks over the weekend.

On Monday, Thompson made it official by putting his name in the portal. He had this message to give to Oregon fans when all was said and done:

There are few players who have earned as much respect as Thompson during his time at Oregon. Fans adore the loyalty and hard work he displayed throughout his time in Eugene.

No matter where he ends up, Thompson certainly has a large group of fans rooting him on from Oregon.

6 potential transfer portal destinations for former Oregon QB Ty Thompson

Here are six possible destinations for former Oregon Ducks’ QB Ty Thompson to transfer to after leaving Eugene.

You have to hand it to Ty Thompson. He could have transferred out of the Oregon football program many times, but he chose to get better, choosing loyalty and hard work over instant opportunity.

Thompson, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder from Mesquite, Arizona, was the highest-rated quarterback to sign with the Ducks in 2021. He was passed over a couple of times in favor of more veteran quarterbacks, but he chose to stay in Eugene and continue to compete for a starting spot.

[lawrence-related id=54021]

He showed remarkable improvement this season under offensive coordinator Will Stein and showed he could be a viable college quarterback.

With Bo Nix leaving after this season, 2024 seemed to be Thompson’s true chance to win the QB1 job. That hope was crushed when Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel announced he would transfer to Oregon. Understandably, that was the last straw for Thompson, who announced his transfer on Sunday morning.

Going forward, Thompson will be an attractive option on the open market, with two years of eligibility remaining as former five-star player. Here are some potential destinations for Thompson to start immediately and get his college career rolling.

Duck fans show love and appreciation to Ty Thompson after QB enters transfer portal

Oregon Ducks quarterback Ty Thompson entered the transfer portal on Sunday, leaving fans to show love and appreciation on social media.

Unfortunately, the writing has been on the wall for a few hours, a few days, a few weeks — and a few years, if we’re being completely honest. On Sunday morning, Oregon Ducks quarterback Ty Thompson announced he would enter the transfer portal and end his time in Eugene.

After three seasons with the team, Thompson saw yet another transfer portal QB brought in over the weekend and jump him on the depth chart. That move led to his decision to find a program that will give him a shot at the QB1 spot.

The relationship between Oregon fans and Thompson is a strong one. While there weren’t a ton of opportunities for No. 13 to showcase his skills on the field, it was the loyalty he put on display year after year that endeared him to  Duck fans. He chose to stick it out in Eugene and opted for hard work over an easier path elsewhere. When the news became official that Thompson was leaving Eugene, Duck fans expressed an outpouring of love and appreciation on social media for what he gave to the program.

Column: When a lot is wrong with college football, Ty Thompson represents what’s right

In a world where players often jump ship when things don’t go their way, former Oregon QB Ty Thompson was a breath of fresh air.

I’m not sure there are many people in today’s college sports era that I respect more than Ty Thompson.

In a world where people chase opportunity, Thompson chose hard work. In a world where players often search for playing time and glamour, Thompson opted for development. In a world where it has become commonplace for athletes to pick up and move multiple times in their career, showing very little regard for the places that gave them a shot in the first place, Thompson showed loyalty.

Ultimately, it didn’t work out.

Thompson came to Eugene in 2021 as the highest-rated quarterback recruit to ever sign with the Oregon Ducks. He leaves Eugene after seeing another transfer portal QB arrive and jump him on the depth chart.

Many fans hoped Thompson would be named the Day 1 starter as a true freshman. They hoped he would become the next in a long line of dynamic and successful passers to play inside Autzen Stadium, building on the successes of Dennis Dixon, Marcus Mariota and Justin Herbert.

Instead, Boston College transfer Anthony Brown won the job and led Oregon to a middling season. In 2022, it was thought to be Ty Thompson’s time with Brown off to the NFL and a year of growth at the college level. Nope. Dan Lanning and the new coaching staff brought in Auburn transfer Bo Nix, who wound up playing himself into the Heisman Trophy conversation before a late-season injury.

That injury might have hurt Thompson more than Nix because it was a major factor in the veteran QB deciding to stick around for the 2023 season, leaving QB13 to sit and wait for another year.

Now, with Nix off to the NFL after a magnificent season, the path finally opened for Thompson. He was the most veteran QB on the roster, and he showed a great many flashes in limited opportunities throughout the 2023 season. He paid his dues and was ready to cash in on that loyalty and hard work.

Hold the phone. Another roadblock.

On the morning of Dec. 9, just 10 days shy of the two-year anniversary of Nix’s transfer to Oregon, the Ducks announced another. Former Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel was coming to Eugene, taking over as the leading candidate to be the starter in 2024.

You don’t have to be close to to see where his frustration would come from.

[lawrence-related id=53875]

Ultimately, I don’t blame Dan Lanning in the slightest for making the move. As the head coach of a major program, his single most important job is to make decisions that give his team the best opportunity to win a national championship. By adding Gabriel — a player with 125 TDs and 26 INTs in his career — he did just that. I applaud Lanning, Will Stein and Marshall Malchow for being able to see an area where they can improve their roster and being able to do so with a splash. As a fan of the Ducks, you should be excited, as well. This undoubtedly gives Oregon its best chance to be successful next year when it navigates the Big Ten Conference for the first time.

You can feel all of that excitement and still have an underlying sense of frustration and remorse on behalf of Thompson. I do.

As the former Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year, Thompson picked the Ducks as his next destination and chose them to be the team that he played for in college. He’s had numerous opportunities to go elsewhere and find instant playing time, but he instead chose to stay where his feet were.

“Leaving was obviously an option, it’s an option for everybody,” Thompson said back at Oregon media day ahead of the 2023 season. “But I feel like for me, especially in this day and age, loyalty is a big thing to me, and I’m just sticking with the process knowing that something is going to happen for me here in Eugene, and I’m really excited for my time here.”

Now, with Gabriel’s addition to the roster, and Thompson’s subsequent transfer from the program, it’s obvious he will never be the guy in Eugene, as he so badly wanted to be.

The story is not over for Thompson. Far from it, actually. As a former blue-chip recruit who has shown flashes of being really good at the college level, he will certainly have opportunities to show how special he is on the field in due time. I, for one, wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him succeeding on Saturday afternoons as soon as 2024.

His story at Oregon has come to an end, though. For fans of college football who have grown so frustrated the transfer portal, name, image and likeness, and conference realignment have changed the sport, this is a tough blow.

In my opinion, Thompson did things the right way. He chose his school, dedicated himself to the team, and stayed loyal when the situation got tough. You don’t often see that anymore, but when you do it is endlessly refreshing.

“In this day and age, if something doesn’t go their way, they jump ship,” Thomspon said last August. “I’m not even saying that things aren’t going my way, but obviously, this isn’t the way that I pictured my time here going. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

Ultimately, that loyalty was not rewarded. It’s no shame on Lanning or any of the coaches who made it so. They did what they were supposed to be the best team they could be.

Thompson also did everything he was supposed to in order to be the best player and the best teammate he could be. That should be celebrated endlessly. Ultimately, I can’t think of many things I respect more.

QB Ty Thompson announces transfer from Oregon Ducks

Oregon Ducks quarterback Ty Thompson has announced that he intends to enter the transfer portal and leave Eugene after three years.

This is news fans of the Oregon Ducks have probably expected for a couple of years, but it is finally time, much to the dismay of many in Eugene.

After the events on Saturday morning, when the Ducks secured the transfer from former Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel, it became inevitable.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Ty Thompson announced on Saturday that he is entering the transfer portal and leaving Eugene. After spending three seasons with the Ducks in a backup role, Thompson is looking for a better situation, one in which he can see the field more.

It was expected he would be in line to win the starting job for the Ducks in 2024 with Nix leaving Oregon for the NFL, but that obviously will not be the case.

Going forward, Thompson — who was the No. 7 QB in the class of 2021 — still has two years of eligibility remaining. Meanwhile, the Ducks have several QBs on the roster to compete for the starting job, including Gabriel, Austin Novosad and Luke Moga. There is also an expectation they will bring in another QB via the transfer portal.

Former Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel to transfer to Oregon Ducks

The Oregon Ducks landed a massive transfer from Oklahoma Sooners’ QB Dillon Gabriel.

The Oregon Ducks are going back into the transfer portal market for a quarterback, and they landed a highly talented player with championship aspirations before his college career comes to an end.

Former Oklahoma Sooners’ QB Dillon Gabriel announced that he is transferring to the Oregon Ducks, looking to help Dan Lanning head into the Big Ten in his final year of collegiate eligibility.

Gabriel played for three seasons at UCF before transferring to Oklahoma for the last two years.

[lawrence-related id=53844]

For those who are confused about how Gabriel still has eligibility remaining after having played in five seasons already, the former Oklahoma QB utilized a medical redshirt in 2021, giving him an extra sixth year.

Throughout his career, Gabriel has been prolific when it comes to putting up numbers. He’s thrown for almost 15,000 yards in his career, with a 125-26 TD-to-INT ratio in those five seasons. Most recently, Gabriel threw for 3,360 yards 30 TDs, and 6 INTs while also rushing for 12 TDs.

Though Gabriel’s transfer to Oregon puts him in pole position to win the starting job, he will still have to beat out Ty Thompson for the QB1 spot in spring ball.

2024 Quarterback Outlook: Ducks with several options going into Big Ten debut

The Oregon Ducks have an open QB1 spot going into their Big Ten debut in 2024, with many options to choose from.

The 2023 season is now behind us, and while there is still a bowl game to be played — The Fiesta Bowl vs. The Liberty Flames — Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks are working hard on the construction of their roster and hitting the transfer portal in attempts to formulate what this team will look like going into the 2024 season, the team’s first year in the Big Ten Conference. While they work on bringing new players in via the transfer portal, we want to look at the future breakdown of each position, detailing current players on the roster, incoming recruits, and potential targets on the market right now. We’re going to start at quarterback.

The past offseason was relatively calm for in Eugene, as Oregon Duck fans entered the 2023 season without a quarterback competition to worry about, knowing that incumbent starter Bo Nix was not only going to be the QB1 on the roster but was rightfully being touted as a Heisman Trophy candidate heading into the final year of Pac-12 play.

The same can’t be said about the upcoming 2024 offseason.

[lawrence-related id=53542]

Bo Nix is headed off to the NFL where he is likely to be a first-round draft pick in April. Meanwhile, the Ducks will be looking to name a new starting quarterback as they get ready to enter Big Ten play for the first time. Fortunately for Dan Lanning and Will Stein, they have several options to choose from. Whether it be a current player on the roster like Ty Thompson or Austin Novosad, or a potential incoming portal addition like Dillon Gabriel or Dante Moore, fans should have confidence that no matter who starts for the Ducks in 2024, he won’t be a last-resort option; he will have earned the job.

Let’s look at the various candidates for the starting job, and provide an overview of the projected QB room in 2024 for the Oregon Ducks.

BREAKING: Washington State QB Cam Ward announces transfer to Oregon Ducks

The Ducks have a new QB in the mix for 2024. Former Washington State QB Cameron Ward is coming to Eugene.

Another year, another transfer portal QB option for the Oregon Ducks.

Former Washington State quarterback Cam Ward is coming to Eugene.

With former Auburn QB Bo Nix heading off to the NFL this year following a historic stint at Oregon, the Ducks will once again be going to the transfer portal market to get a potential signal-caller for the 2024 season.

This past year, Ward threw for 3,736 yards and 25 touchdowns for the Cougars with just 7 interceptions and 66.6% completion. In his career at WSU, he has almost 7,000 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. He’s also added 202 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground in his two years in Pullman as well.

In two seasons at the FCS level Incarnate Word before transferring to WSU, Ward had a total of 71 TDs and 14 interceptions. He currently has one year of eligibility remaining.

While Ward will likely be the favorite to win the starting QB job in Eugene, he will have to compete with the likes of Ty Thompson, Austin Novosad, Michael Van Buren, and Luke Moga before winning the top job.

Ward also continues the long line of transfer portal QBs to come to Eugene, which over the years has included Nix, Anthony Brown, Dakota Prukop, and Vernon Adams, among others.
