Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2022-23 season

Which familiar name is your favorite?

The weather has gotten cooler, which means it soon will be cold. That means it’s time for the 2022-23 NHL season to begin. As usual, Notre Dame has plenty of representation in the league. Amazingly, not only do the Irish have the same number of former players from the beginning of last season (10), but the same players themselves.

Maybe it’s boring to some people to not see any new Irish players begin the season in the NHL, but 17 will start in the AHL, so you have that to possibly look forward to. Until then, here are the familiar 10 names:

Notre Dame alumnus Andrew Peeke heading to world championships

Best of luck to the former Irish captain.

Former Notre Dame defenseman Andrew Peeke’s Columbus Blue Jackets didn’t close to qualifying for this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs. However, all is not lost for him as far as acquiring hardware in 2022. That’s because he will head to Finland and play for the U.S. in this year’s world championships. He last represented the U.S. in the 2018 world junior championships, during which he won a bronze medal.

Peeke just completed his first full season and third overall with the Blue Jackets. He played in all 82 games, and 13 of his 15 points came from assists.

Peeke will be the 17th Notre Dame alumnus to take part in the event. Most recently, Cal Petersen and Matt Hellickson won a bronze with the U.S. in Latvia in 2021.

Peeke played for the Irish from 2016 to 2019 and was their captain during his final year in South Bend. Over three seasons and 119 games, he scored 52 points, 12 of them coming on goals.

Three Notre Dame alumni nominated for King Clancy Memorial Trophy

Hopefully, one of them wins!

With the Stanley Cup playoffs underway, it’s time to speculate who will win this year’s awards in the NHL. One award is the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. This award is presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership on his team at all times and has been a humanitarian in his community. Past winners include Pekka Rinne, Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Henrik Zetterberg, Patrice Bergeron, Vincent Lecavalier, Jarome Iginla, Ron Francis, Curtis Joseph and Ray Bourque.

Every team has a nominee, and this year, Notre Dame is well represented. That’s because three players who once suited up for the Irish are among the nominees. That means there’s a good chance Notre Dame will have one of its own be listed among some elite company, although the award only has been presented since 1988. Here are the three former Irish players to watch out for this awards season, two of which play for playoff teams:

At least three Notre Dame alumni will be on Stanley Cup playoff rosters

Here are some guys to root for in the postseason.

Once again, it’s time for the annual competition for the Stanley Cup, the most magnificent trophy in sports. Although the slight shift in the NHL calendar means the playoffs are beginning later than we’re used to, that doesn’t make the anticipation for the most intense hockey of the year any less. Even if your team didn’t make it in this year, the high blood pressure that comes with watching these games, especially those that go into overtime, will be present. Hockey fans wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you’re a Notre Dame hockey fan, three players who have gone through the program are on the playoff rosters for their respective teams. More of them could join after their AHL teams’ seasons end or if any other needs arise. That gives Irish fans plenty of opportunities to be happy at who wins the Cup. For now, here are the three players to watch for:

Watch: Jake Evans scores on Cal Petersen in Canadiens-Kings game

Notre Dame’s recent past collided in this moment.

There are plenty of NHL skaters who went to Notre Dame, but only one NHL goaltender who donned the blue and gold. That being the case, the opportunity for a former Irish player to score on Cal Petersen of the Los Angeles Kings doesn’t come along every night. It’s even rarer when one of Petersen’s former teammates in South Bend does him dirty. However, it happened Tuesday at the hands of Jake Evans of the Montreal Canadiens:

The goal tied the score at 2, and that’s where it would stay through the end of the third period, giving the Habs a point they were glad to take after entering the game at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. That was as good as it got for Evans’ squad as the Kings went on to win it in overtime.

Evans and Petersen played together at Notre Dame from 2014 to 2017. The Irish made the Frozen Four during their final season on the same team.

Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2021-22 season

Pay special attention to these players this season.

The puck has dropped on the 2021-22 NHL season, and the full 82-game schedule has returned. Besides the usual amount of hockey to look forward to once again, there also is a new team that has taken the ice. One player on that team played collegiate hockey at Notre Dame, as did nine other players who are starting the year on NHL rosters. That number could grow later this season with 15 other former Irish players starting play in the AHL, but for now, here are the 10 you can see at hockey’s top level at this moment:

Matt Hellickson, Cal Petersen make U.S. team for World Championships

The Irish will have representation at the World Championships.

The hockey World Championships are back, and two former Notre Dame players have made the final cut for the U.S. team. Those players are defenseman Matt Hellickson and goaltender Cal Petersen. That makes 16 former Notre Dame players to have played in this event. The tournament will run from May 21 to June 6 and take place in Latvia.

Hellickson recently completed his fourth and final season for the Irish, during which he was an alternate captain. In 146 collegiate games, he scored 52 points, 13 of which were goals. A 2017 seventh-round pick of the New Jersey Devils, he recently began his professional career with their AHL affiliate in Binghamton. Through four games, he has yet to register a point, but he has 19 penalty minutes.

Petersen, making his second World Championships appearance, was in net for the Irish for three seasons from 2014 to 2017 and became the first goaltender in program history to serve as captain as a senior. He had a 53-39-15 record and a .924 save percentage while earning 11 shutouts. He just completed his first full season with the Los Angeles Kings, appearing in 36 games. During that time, he accumulated a 9-18-5 records with a 2.89 GAA and .911 save percentage.

Los Angeles Kings at Vegas Golden Knights odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Kings at Golden Knights NHL matchup, with NHL betting odds, picks and best bets

The Los Angeles Kings (24-35-6) hit the road to take on the Vegas Golden Knights (36-22-8) Sunday at T-Mobile Arena at 10:30 p.m. ET (on NBCSN). We analyze the Kings-Golden Knights sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Kings at Golden Knights: Projected starting goalies

Cal Petersen vs. Marc-Andre Fleury

Petersen is expected to draw the start after Jonathan Quick posted an overtime win in Saturday’s matinee action against the New Jersey Devils at Staples Center. Petersen is 2-3-0 with a 3.02 goals-against average and .913 save percentage in his five starts to date.

Fleury is 26-14-5 with a 2.73 GAA and .908 SV% in his 46 appearances (45 starts) to date. He is expected to get the nod after Robin Lehner made his team debut and stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced against the Sabres in a win Friday.

Prediction

Golden Knights 5, Kings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Golden Knights (-334) are heavily favored against the Kings (+260), and rightly so. Yes, L.A. won 2-1 in overtime on Saturday, but it was against the lowly Devils. A road trip, albeit a short one, against a Western Conference contender on the second end of a back-to-back is a recipe for disaster for the young Kings. Still, you can’t bet Vegas at this price. Look to the puck line. AVOID.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Golden Knights returns a profit of $3 if they win, while a $10 wager on the Kings results in a profit of $26 if the home team prevails.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The GOLDEN KNIGHTS (-1.5, -115) are a much better play on the puck line, although you’ll still have to eat a little chalk. Vegas has won eight in a row and covered the puck line in four of the past five.

Over/Under (O/U)

The trends go in both directions for these teams. The under dominates the trends for the Kings, but the OVER 5.5 (-139) is the play here. The over is 3-1-1 in the past five for Vegas, and 9-4-1 in the past 14 at home. The over is also 4-0 in the past four meetings in this series, and the Vegas offense should have its way against the Kings backup netminder.

Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing Sunday’s Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers NHL matchup, with NHL betting odds, picks and best bets

The Los Angeles Kings (19-32-5) and New York Rangers (26-23-4) square off at Madison Square Garden at 6 p.m. ET. We analyze the Kings-Rangers sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Kings at Rangers: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Quick vs. Igor Shesterkin

Quick is expected to be back in the crease after yielding to Cal Petersen in New Jersey Saturday night. The American veteran is 11-21-3 with a 3.05 goals-against average and .894 save percentage. One of those wins came against the Blueshirts in Staples Center in the first meeting back on Dec. 10, allowing just one goal on 30 shots.

Shesterkin is confirmed to make the start Sunday. He continues to hum along, going 4-1-0 with a 2.61 GAA and .922 save percentage in his five outings, all at home. It appears he is set up to continue his success, as the Kings are on the second end of a back-to-back on the road and they limp in with a minus-43 goal differential, 30th in the NHL.

Kings at Rangers: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 7:55 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Rangers 4, Kings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Rangers (-189) are favored by the exact same line as the Islanders were against the Kings (+155) a few days ago. L.A. fell 5-3 in that one, 3-0 last night in New Jersey and they’ll end up getting swept in the New York Metro area after this one. Still, you can’t risk nearly two times your investment. AVOID.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rangers to win returns a profit of $5.30, while a $10 wager on the Kings results in a profit of $15.50.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The RANGERS (-1.5, +145) are much better value laying the goals, as Quick has been extremely giving. Yes, the Kings were able to come up with a rare win in the first meeting, but the home team is 4-1 in the past five in this series, with the favorite also 4-1.

If you’re into alternate bets, look to the Rangers (-2.5, +260) for a small investment and solid value.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-154) will have you eating a lot of chalk, but it’s a worthwhile play. The over is 15-6-2 in the past 23 games overall for the Rangers, while going 9-3-1 in their past 13 at MSG. The over is also 9-1 in their past 10 against Western Conference foes. The over is 4-1 in the previous five meetings, and 4-1 in the past five in NYC, too.

Los Angeles Kings at New York Islanders odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Los Angeles Kings at New York Islanders sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings (19-30-5) and New York Islanders (30-15-6) tangle at Barclays Center at 7 p.m. ET Thursday. We analyze the Kings-Islanders sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Kings at Islanders: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Quick vs. Thomas Greiss

Quick’s expected to get the nod again after the Kings dealt backup Jack Campbell to the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday. The team recalled Cal Petersen from Ontario of the AHL to serve as the backup to Quick, but it’s unlikely they’ll thrust him right into the crease in a tough road game. Quick is 11-20-3 with a 3.02 goals against average and .895 save percentage. He is coming off a 4-2 loss Tuesday in Washington.

Greiss is 14-7-2 with a 2.50 GAA and .922 SV% through his 23 starts and two relief appearances. He is 8-2-1 with a 2.39 GAA and .920 SV% in his 12 appearances at home.

Kings at Islanders: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 9:40 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Islanders 4, Kings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Islanders (-189) will cost you nearly two times your investment which is just too much. The Kings (+155) are starting to sell off some key parts, dealing Campbell and forward Kyle Clifford Wednesday. Still, while New York is a very good certainty to win, AVOID the moneyline in favor of the spread.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Islanders to win returns a profit of $5.30, while a $10 wager on the Kings results in a profit of $15.50.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The ISLANDERS (-1.5, +150) are a better play on the puck line against the lowly Kings (+1.5, -182), who rank 28th in the NHL in goal differential at minus-38.

The last time these teams met, Nov. 27 at Staples Center, the Kings won 4-1 behind Quick against Semyon Varlamov. However, the Kings are 0-4 in their past four trips to Long Island/Brooklyn, and the home team is 8-1 in the previous nine meetings.

If you’re into alternate bets – under ‘other’ – check out the winning margin in regular time. Islanders to win by exactly 2 (+500) is also worth a look. You could turn $5 into $25, for example.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (+105) is the play here, as the Isles have the offense to come close to taking care of it themselves. The Over is 4-1-1 in the past six at home for the Isles, and 6-2-2 in the past 10 overall. The Over is also 6-2 in the past eight meetings and 4-0-1 in the past five on Long Island.
