LSU baseball brings out the brooms in Game 3 win over Mississippi State

LSU secured the sweep with a dominant performance on Sunday.

LSU came into Sunday’s Game 3 going for its first SEC series sweep of the year, but in order to bring out the brooms, the offense needed to bring out the sticks.

The Tigers did just that in a blowout 13-3 win that capped off an impressive road series.

[autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers and, in the bottom of the first inning, Mississippi State hit a solo home run off of him to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit into a double play, but [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] was able to score and tie the game at 1-1.

Dutton was replaced by [autotag]Grant Taylor[/autotag] after pitching three innings, his final line was 3 innings pitched with four hits, one run, and one strikeout. In the top of the fifth inning, LSU busted the game open with a five-run inning. It started with a [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] RBI single that scored [autotag]Tyler McManus[/autotag].

[autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] followed that up with an RBI single to score Josh Stevenson. That was followed by a three-run bomb by [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] to make it 6-1 Tigers.

In the top of the sixth inning, Morgan hit an RBI double to score McManus and make it 7-1 LSU through six innings of play.

In the top of the seventh, [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] hit a solo home run to extend the lead to 8-1.

That was followed by another Pearson homer as it was the freshman’s best day at the plate so far this season, and he made it 9-1.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs cut into the lead as they hit a two-run home run against Tayor to cut the lead to 9-3. But LSU got those runs back, plus more. Crews started it off with a two-RBI double.

Doughty followed with an RBI double and Pearson had an RBI single to make it 13-3 LSU headed to the bottom of the eighth. [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning and secured the sweep for the Tigers.

With the win and the sweep, LSU moves to 23-9 (7-5 SEC) on the year. The next game will be Tuesday night against Lamar University with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

LSU bats lead rally in Game 1 win over Mississippi State

LSU started its road series on a high note.

LSU entered Friday’s Game 1 against Mississippi State looking to get back on the right track in SEC play after dropping the series to Auburn last week.

Usually, [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] gets the start on Friday nights, but things have changed, as it was a “Mike Night.” [autotag]Ma’Khail Hilliard[/autotag] got the start on the mound, and, just like he has been the past couple of weeks, he had another incredible start.

His performance and some timely offense led the Tigers to a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs to get a head start in the series.

Hilliard pitched six full innings only allowing two runs with five strikeouts. In the top of the fourth inning, LSU struck first as [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs took the lead as they scored on a two-RBI single to take their first lead of the game 2-1. Going into the top of the ninth inning, LSU only had three hits and left seven runners on base, but all they needed was one run to tie the game and two to take the lead.

[autotag]Josh Thompson[/autotag] struck out looking for out No. 1, Pearson flew out for out No. 2, then [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] walked to give the Tigers a baserunner. [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] then came in to pinch-hit and he was hit by a pitch.

Tigers had runners on first and second with two outs as Tre Morgan stepped into the batter’s box. A wild pitch then advanced both runners to second and third. Tre Morgan, facing a 1-1 count with runners on second and third laced a fastball up the middle to score Stevenson and Travinski as the Tigers took a 3-2 lead.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was greeted by a new pitcher and he hit a “Crews” missile to expand the LSU lead to 5-2.

[autotag]Paul Gervase[/autotag] stepped onto the mound to try and close the game in the bottom of the ninth. He struck the first guy out. The second batter grounded out to the first baseman. The last batter struck out swinging as LSU completed the victory. Game 2 will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball gets back in the win column against Grambling

The Tigers had an offensive explosion in a Tuesday night win.

After another 2-2 week and a series loss to Auburn, LSU needed a bounce-back heading into a midweek contest against Grambling on Tuesday night. It got back in the win column as the Tigers won 16-3 in a game that was called early after seven innings with a run rule.

However, things did not start out well for LSU in this one, and it looked like it could be heading for a tough game. Grambling scored two runs on Grant Taylor in the top of the first to take an early lead. But in the bottom of the first, LSU tied the game with a two-run home run by [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag].

In the bottom of the second, LSU scored four more runs as [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit a solo homer, [autotag]Collier Cranford[/autotag] scored on a fielding error, and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to score [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] and Berry and increase the lead to 6-2.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the LSU offense erupted as it scored a whopping nine runs. It started out with a [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] RBI single, followed by a Travinski two-run homer, a two-run [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] missile, a [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] RBI single, a Thompson RBI single, and a two-RBI Cranford single to make it 15-2.

In the top of the fifth, Grambling scored an unearned run after an LSU error to make it 15-3. In the bottom of the sixth, [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] scored on a passed ball to make it 16-3.

With the win, LSU moves to 20-9 on the year and their next game will be in Starkville, Mississippi, as they take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs Friday at 7 pm.

LSU baseball drops the series to Auburn after Game 3 loss

LSU’s 6-4 loss on Saturday cost it a series loss at home.

Both LSU and Auburn entered Saturday’s Game 3 matchup with a lot on the line as the winner would take the series 2-1. In an all-Tiger matchup, who would prevail?

LSU started the day in their *Saturday* best gold unis and with [autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] on the mound. However, that wasn’t enough to take home a series win as AU clinched it with a 6-4 win in the rubber match.

For the first time this series, Auburn got on the board first as it plated a run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. LSU was able to tie the game in the bottom of the second as [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag].

In the top of the fourth inning, Auburn took the lead back and chased Dutton from the mound with LSU down 2-1. Dutton’s final line was 3.2 innings pitched, four hits, two runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.

In the top of the fifth inning, Sonny Dichiara hit a two-run home run against [autotag]Devin Fontenot[/autotag] to make it 4-1 Auburn. In the bottom of the seventh inning, LSU cut into the Auburn lead thanks to a barrage of hits from the top of the lineup. [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] doubled, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] singled, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] was hit by a pitch, and Berry hit an RBI single to cut it to 4-3 after seven innings.

In the top of the eighth, Auburn was able to get both of those runs back with a couple of RBI singles to make it 6-3 as we headed to the bottom of the inning. Morgan was able to get a run back in the bottom of the inning as he hit a solo home run to cut it to 6-4.

Berry, [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], and Thompson were the three Tigers due up in the bottom of the ninth and they were charged with the task of trying to tie it up or walk it off. Berry started it off with a groundout. Jobert then grounded out. Thompson struck out swinging and that was the end of the game as LSU lost dropped the series.

With the loss, the Tigers move to 19-9 (4-5 SEC) on the year. The next game will be Tuesday night against Grambling with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT at Alex Box Stadium.

LSU evens the series with Auburn with a big win in Game 2

LSU dominated on Friday night to set up a decisive Game 3 at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.

LSU came into Friday night’s Game 2 looking to rebound after Thursday’s tough one-run loss to Auburn. A big offensive performance allowed the right Tigers to even up the series heading into Sunday’s rubber match.

If [autotag]Ma’Khail Hilliard[/autotag] keeps pitching like he has been lately, “Mike Day” will become a Baton Rouge holiday. The fifth-year senior came out and absolutely shoved Friday as he pitched 5.1 innings giving up four hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts.

That is a very welcome sight for all Tiger fans and especially coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag]. Offensively, things started just as they did last night with a home run in the bottom of the first inning, this time by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag].

In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] added to the lead with an RBI double that scored [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag].

That was followed by an RBI single from Crews to plate Doughty and make it 3-0 LSU after five full innings.

Auburn finally got on the board in the top of the seventh as they scored two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. LSU gained some breathing room again in the bottom of the seventh thanks to [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], Crews, [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] to make it 8-2 LSU.

In the bottom of the eighth, Travinski scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-2 as heading into the final inning. [autotag]Trent Vietmeier[/autotag] came in to pitch the top of the ninth and he was able to retire Auburn without allowing a run.

Saturday’s decisive Game 3 is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball falls at home in Game 1 against Auburn

The Tigers’ comeback effort fell short as they sit in a 0-1 hole against Auburn.

LSU entered Thursday night’s series opener against the Auburn Tigers riding a three-game winning streak after it beat the Florida Gators twice in Gainesville and then shellacked UL-Monroe 15-4 on Tuesday.

It seemed that the Tigers were starting to figure things out under first-year coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag], but that progress was interrupted against Auburn as they fell 6-5 despite a late comeback bid.

[autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] got the start on the mound for Game 1 of the weekend series against AU, and LSU started things off right with a [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] homer in the bottom of the first to take the early lead in a battle between SEC West foes.

Things remained quiet until [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] continued his hot streak with his own solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 2-0 LSU.

However, it all fell apart in the top of the fifth.

With bases loaded and two outs, Auburn got a two-RBI single on a ball that bounced over Tre Morgan’s head at first. That tied the game 2-2. The next batter hit a three-run home run, and in the blink of an eye, it was 5-2 Auburn.

It scored again on an error by Doughty to make it 6-2 for the wrong Tigers heading to the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the eighth inning, LSU was able to cut into the Auburn lead as [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] blasted a two-run shot to right field to make it 6-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, LSU scored a run on a sacrifice fly by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] to cut the lead to 6-5 with Morgan standing on second base as the tying run, but [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] struck out for out No. 2.

In stepped [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] with a chance to tie or win the game, and he flew out to right field.

LSU will play Game 2 against Auburn tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT at Alex Box Stadium.

LSU baseball dominates Louisiana-Monroe, extends winning streak to 3

It’s Brayden Jobert’s world, and we’re all just living in it.

“YOU CAN PUCKER UP AND KISS THAT BABY GOODBYE! HE’S HOTTER THAN A FIRE ANT ON A FEVER BLISTER! Jobert, swinging it like Excalibur right now,” play-by-play commentator Lyn Rollins proclaimed during Tuesday night’s game against Louisiana-Monroe.

It is truly Brayden Jobert’s world; we are all just living in it. Facing the Warhawks at Alex Box Stadium, the Tigers picked up right where they left off on Sunday.

[autotag]Tyrann Mathieu[/autotag] was back in the bayou to make the first pitch, and that was the start of a great night for LSU as it pushed its winning streak to three games with a dominant 15-4 win heading into a weekend series against the Auburn Tigers.

In the top of the first inning, ULM hit a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead, but that was the last sliver of hope it would get in this game. In the bottom of the inning, the scoring spree started for the Tigers. First, [autotag]Josh Berry[/autotag] tied the game up on an RBI single.

Second, Jobert hit a three-RBI double to make it 4-1.

Third, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit an RBI double, and last, [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit an RBI single to make the score 6-1 LSU after one inning. The Tigers would get on the board again in the bottom of the third when Dugas hit a solo home run to left field to make it 7-1.

In the top of the fourth, [autotag]Cale Lansville[/autotag] came in to pitch and he surrendered three Warhawk runs to make it 7-4 after four innings. LSU scored again in the bottom of the sixth when Jobert hit a solo homer to make it 8-4.

That was followed by a [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] sacrifice fly to make it 9-4 after six innings. In the bottom of the seventh, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a past ball and Jobert hit yet another home run. This time, it was a three-run shot to make it 13-4 LSU after seven innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, [autotag]Drew Bianco[/autotag] was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score another run, and [autotag]Jack Merrifield[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly to make it 15-4 headed to the top of the ninth. [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] came in to finish the game on the mound in the ninth and worked a quick 1-2-3 inning.

With the win, LSU moves to 18-7 on the year and 3-3 in conference play. It will play the Auburn Tigers at home starting this Thursday, with the first pitch of Game 1 scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at The Box.

Tigers even the series against Florida with big win in Game 2

LSU beat the Gators 16-4 to set up a decisive Game 3 on Sunday.

Hello, offense. It’s been a while.

After losing on Friday night 7-2, LSU came out swinging it on Saturday. That paid off big time for the Tigers as they made a statement with a 16-4 win to even the series heading into Sunday’s rubber match.

[autotag]Mike Hilliard[/autotag] got the start on the mound, and he finally ended the Tigers’ recent pitching woes as he earned his second win of the season.

LSU got things going offensively from the very beginning. In the top of the first inning, [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to give the Tigers an early lead.

In the top of the third inning, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly to score [autotag]Cade Doughty[/autotag] and [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] reached on an error that scored Morgan to make it 4-0 LSU.

Still, in the third inning, LSU made a call to the bullpen, but not for a pitcher. [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit back-to-back homers to extend the lead to 8-0 after only three innings.

In the top of the fifth inning, LSU scored on a Florida error to extend the lead to 9-0.

Did I say “Happy Mike Day” yet?

Saturday was a very happy Mike day as Hilliard kept the Tigers off the board for five full innings before Florida finally scored. The Gators scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to finally chase him from the mound, but at that point, it was 9-4 LSU after six innings.

Hilliard’s final line was 5 2/3 innings pitched, five hits, four runs, zero walks and seven strikeouts. [autotag]Paul Gervase[/autotag] came in to relieve him and finished the sixth inning, working into the seventh and eighth, as well.

He pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up zero hits and zero runs with one walk and two strikeouts. LSU wasn’t done scoring yet, though, as in the top of the ninth inning, Jobert hit an RBI single to make it 10-4.

Not to be outdone, Dugas followed that up with an RBI double of his own to extend the lead to 11-4.

Jobert scored on a wild pitch, [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly, another run scored on a wild pitch, and then a Crews missile was launched in Gainesville to make it 16-4 LSU as we headed to the bottom of the ninth inning.

Trent Vietmeier came in to finish the game in the bottom of the ninth as he went three-up and three-down to secure the 16-4 LSU win. The Tigers were led by Thompson at the plate as he finished 3 of 6 on the night.

LSU will play the rubber match against the Gators on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.

LSU baseball’s Cade Doughty named SEC Player of the Week

Doughty had eight hits, two home runs and 12 RBI in the Tigers’ opening weekend sweep of Maine.

Cade Doughty: the third-baseman, the second-baseman, the clean-up hitter, the bringer of dingers.

Call him whatever you like, but the SEC calls him the Player of the Week for his opening weekend performance against the Maine Black Bears. The honor marked the second time Doughty has earned SEC Player of the Week recognition during his career. He was also named the league’s top player on March 15, 2021, after leading LSU to a three-game sweep of Texas-San Antonio.

The redshirt sophomore will play a pivotal role in determining just how good this LSU team can be moving forward in the season. Here’s what the SEC said about him in its release.

LSU’s Cade Doughty led the SEC during the opening weekend with 12 RBI and 17 total bases, and he tied for the league lead with eight total hits and a pair of home runs. Doughty hit .571 during the Tigers’ three-game sweep of Maine, and his on-base percentage was .563. He was 3-for-6 in Game 2 of the series on Saturday with a double, five RBI and a first-inning, three-run homer that highlighted a four-run first inning. Doughty again collected five RBI in Sunday’s Game 3 victory with another three-run homer, a double and a sacrifice fly. He also doubled and drove in two runs in LSU’s Game 1 win on Friday night.

LSU swept the Black Bears this weekend while setting a program record for runs scored in the first three games, and the Tigers will hope for a similar performance for the team heading into a road matchup against Louisiana Tech on Wednesday night.
