Chiefs assistant RBs coach Porter Ellett gifted one-of-a-kind split helmet

#Chiefs assistant running backs coach Porter Ellett was given a one-of-a-kind piece of sports memorabilia from the BYU football program. | from @TheJohnDillon

While many Kansas City Chiefs fans have only recently become aware of assistant Porter Ellett in his NFL films short, he’s made an outsized impact on the team and at his alma mater Brigham Young University prior.

Ellett has been with the Chiefs since 2017, playing an integral part in Kansas City’s administrative structure. He served as a senior assistant to Andy Reid and an offensive quality control coach before being promoted to his current position in the 2023 offseason.

Recently, BYU gifted Ellett a one-of-a-kind custom helmet with a split design that features both the Cougars’ and Chiefs’ color schemes and logos. He shared a video of the masterpiece on Twitter, showing the world the unique design of the helmet and thanking the BYU football program for the exceptionally cool piece of memorabilia.

While BYU’s campus in Provo, Utah is far from Ellett’s current home in Kansas City, clearly the school’s connection to him is never out of his reach. Their football program has had an indelible effect on the Chiefs given its connection to Ellett and head coach Andy Reid. Fans shouldn’t be surprised if Kansas City eyes some of their prospects in the 2023 NFL draft as they look to defend their status as reigning champions next season.

10 impact NFL draft prospects to consider at the Eagles biggest under-the-radar position of need

We’re looking at ten wide receiver prospects for the Philadelphia Eagles to consider in round two or three of the 2023 NFL Draft

The Eagles have one of the top wide receiver duos in the NFL, but the depth behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith leaves much to be desired.

Quez Watkins is the No. 3 wideout and a talented deep threat, but he has flaws and is coming off a down 2022 season,

Still, if the season started today, either Britain Covey, Tyrie Cleveland, Greg Ward, or Devon Allen would be the fourth option on the outside.

We recently looked at five potential options from the 2023 crop of free-agent wide receivers, but the pickings are slim, and the production is questionable going forward.

Philadelphia should address the position in the NFL draft, while a talented veteran looking to play for a winning organization could also add value.

With the NFL draft less than a month away, here are ten wide receivers to consider at the Eagles’ most significant under-the-radar position of need.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 41, BYU WR Puka Nacua

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is BYU WR Puka Nacua.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers need to get Jordan Love more playmakers. Christian Watson proved to be an electric weapon during his rookie season. Romeo Doubs flashed potential and could develop into the team’s No. 3 or No. 2 option. Samori Toure figures to have a place on the depth chart next season.

Now, Brian Gutekunst needs to add more young weapons. A player that could be a target for the Packers in the upcoming draft is Puka Nacua. The BYU wide receiver checks in at No. 41 in the Unpacking Future Packers countdown.

Nacua, the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year in 2018 started his collegiate career at Washington. During his first season at BYU, Nacua caught 43 passes for 805 yards and six touchdowns. In nine games this season, Nacua caught 48 passes for 625 yards and five touchdowns. The dynamic playmaker also scored five rushing touchdowns.

“Nacua’s season was riddled by injuries, but productive nevertheless,” Jay Drew, a reporter for the Deseret News said. “First time he touched the ball in 2022, on a jet sweep against South Florida, he took it to the house, sprinting past some surprised USF defenders to show a fairly good burst of speed. Later in that game, he suffered a high ankle sprain that caused him to miss the next few games. Still, he was clearly BYU’s best receiver when he was healthy, and one of the top receivers in the country, in my opinion.”

Nacua set Utah state records during his time at Orem High School. Nacua set records for career receptions, yards, and receiving records. Nacua proved to be a versatile, and dynamic playmaker for BYU this past season. The name of the game was to get the ball in Nacua’s hands and let him go to work.

Two strengths come to mind,” Drew said. “First, his versatility. He was used as a running back, kick returner, slot receiver, wide receiver, and everything in between. Second, he is as good at tracking the ball in flight as any receiver I’ve seen in my 14 years covering BYU football. Many times Jaren Hall would simply loft the football in Nacua’s direction, and he would be able to track it earlier than the defensive back and make a play on the ball before the DB knew it was coming.”

Nacua runs hard after the catch. He’s able to run through arm tackles and has good contact balance. He looks like a running back with the ball in his hands. BYU did a great job of getting him manufactured touches. According to Pro Football Focus, Nacua finished the past season with 356 yards after the catch.

“Nacua is outstanding with the ball in his hands,” Drew said. “He was so good in that department that the BYU coaches utilized him a lot on fly sweeps, bubble screens, and even out of the backfield. He just has that uncanny ability to make guys miss. Plus, he’s wiry strong and has the ability to break tackles. He’s surprisingly fast for a guy his size.”

Nacua has strong, reliable hands. He tracks the ball well over his shoulder. He has no issue making catches with a defensive back locked in his hip. He finished this past season with three drops. As a route runner, Nacua quickly enters his route with instant acceleration off the line of scrimmage.

“He’s got really good hands,” Drew said. “For an example, go look at his game-winning touchdown reception against Boise State. One of the most athletic plays I’ve ever seen in crunch time.”

Nacua gives great effort as a blocker out on the perimeter. He’s more than happy to do the dirty work.

“I would say he’s an above-average blocker, due to his above-average size,” Drew said. “I do know that he puts a lot of pride into his blocking. Several times after games when he was asked how he thought he performed, he mentioned that his blocking could have been better.”

Fit with the Packers

Bring YAC back to the Pack. Watson is a YAC threat. Now let’s continue to bring the YAC back to Green Bay by adding Nacua.

Nacua has reliable hands, he’s dangerous with the ball in his hands and he’s a solid route runner.

Nacua can line up in the slot or on the boundary. He’s a versatile playmaker that Matt LaFleur could get creative with how they get the ball in his hands.

“He is a fantastic locker room guy,” Drew said. “He’s a big team player, unselfish, and willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to pick up wins. Due to several injuries this season, he easily could have told coaches to back off his usage and, as they say in the NBA, practice some load management. But he never did. He was a willing warrior all season. He’s a high-character guy that people naturally gravitate to because of his ever-present smile and positive attitude. He could be a steal, depending on which round he goes in.”

Nacua was a record-setting wide receiver in high school. He continued to showcase that playmaking ability at the collegiate level.

For a team looking to add more playmakers, Nacua has the juice that could make him an attractive target for the Packers in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Saints reunite college teammates Jamaal Williams and Taysom Hill

The Saints reunited college teammates Jamaal Williams and Taysom Hill, who ran for more than 6,200 yards together at BYU:

Now this is cool: Jamaal Williams became the charismatic face of the Detroit Lions last year while scoring a league-leading 17 touchdown runs, but now he’s joining the New Orleans Saints as a free agent — where he’ll reunite with his old college teammate Taysom Hill. Hill and Williams formed a dangerous zone-read combo at BYU that saw the two of them rack up a combined 1,978 rushing yards and 20 touchdown runs in 2016 and 2,577 rushing yards with 17 scoring runs in 2013. They totaled more than 6,200 rushing yards together from 2012 to 2016.

The two were very close in college, and you can get an idea of their chemistry from this 11-minute joint interview at BYU’s 2016 Media Day. They were actually together briefly on the Green Bay Packers during the 2017 preseason, only for Hill to be released. The Saints picked him up off of waivers, and the rest is history. Now they’re together again.

10 wide receivers for the Eagles to watch at the 2023 NFL combine

We’re looking at 10 wide receiver prospects for the Philadelphia Eagles to watch at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine

The wide receiver position is settled with A.J. Brown set to start the first year of his monster contract extension, and DeVonta Smith entering his third year, with a fifth-year option all but guaranteed to be picked up.

There’s some uncertainty after the dynamic duo.

Quez Watkins will be in the final year of his rookie deal, while undrafted free agent Britain Covey should return as the primary punt returner.

Zach Pascal will be an unrestricted free agent, and Philadelphia could look to add a talented rookie on a cheap deal to an already blockbuster duo.

With on-field workouts, underway here are ten wide receivers to watch at the NFL Combine on Saturday.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 59, BYU OT Blake Freeland

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is BYU offensive tackle Blake Freeland.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL draft.

The NFL Scouting Combine is this week with on-field drills scheduled to start on Thursday with the defensive line and linebackers. The offensive line is scheduled to work out on Sunday and a player that could make some money is BYU’s, Blake Freeland.

The BYU offensive tackle was a three-sport athlete at Herriman High School and owns the Utah record in the javelin. During his prep sports career, Freeland was named to the All-State Track and Field team six times. Freeland’s parents both played sports at BYU and one of his four sisters competed on the track and field team for the Cougars.

“Perhaps Freeland’s biggest strength is his athleticism for such a big guy,” Jay Drew, a reporter for the Deseret News said. “He moves his feet incredibly well, has decent strength, and is outstanding in pass protection. Freeland was a high school quarterback and tight end before coming to BYU at Herriman High in the Salt Lake Valley. He was also a good basketball player, making several all-conference and all-state teams. His BYU teammates say he might be the best basketball player on the team. That shows some pretty good athleticism.”

As a true freshman in 2019, Freeland started seven games at right tackle and started eight games at right tackle during the 2020 season. Over the past two seasons, Freeland started 26 games at left tackle.

“Freeland had an outstanding career at BYU,” Drew said. “One of the best careers for an offensive lineman in school history. His time at BYU ranks right up there with some of the all-time greats such as Brady Christensen, Bart Oates, Trevor Matich, John Tait, and Mo Elewonibi. Blake became a starter in his freshman year in 2019, appeared in seven games at right tackle, and quickly made the position his own. In 2021 he moved over to left tackle and quickly excelled at that position as well.”

At 6-7 with long arms, Freeland has great length and is one of the most experienced offensive tackles in the draft. Freeland is quick out of stance and has the quick feet to hold the corner. The BYU offensive tackle has quick hands and uses his long arms to stonewall rushers. According to Pro Football Focus, Freeland gave up just one sack and 12 pressures over the past two seasons at left tackle.

There are questions about Freeland’s functional strength. It’s worth noting that Freeland came to BYU at 160 pounds and worked hard to add muscle, and weight to his frame. He weighed in at the Senior Bowl at 312 pounds.

Freeland is big, strong, and very athletic,” Drew said. “He has this innate ability to recognize quickly what defensive ends are trying to do and gets in the right position to stop them from getting to the quarterback.”

Freeland’s athleticism is on full display when he’s asked to get out into space as a run blocker. He has no restrictions on pulling or climbing to the second level. While not a mauler, Freeland earned his best run-blocking grade from PFF this past season (87.9).

“Freeland probably isn’t as adept at run blocking as he is at pass blocking, but he is still more than adequate there,” Drew said. “He’s got decent speed for a 6-8 guy and occasionally would be used like a pulling guard because of his ability to get out and move.”

Fit with the Packers

All signs point to David Bakhtiari being back with the Green Bay Packers next season. Zach Tom has proven to be a viable option at right or left tackle, with the versatility to play anywhere along the offensive line. Yosh Nijman will most likely be back. The Packers also have Rasheed Walker and Caleb Jones on the roster. On top of that, Elgton Jenkins is always capable of kicking back outside in a pinch.

It would appear the Packers are set at the tackle position for the upcoming season. What about a year from now? Will Bakhtiari and Njiman be on the roster after next season?

What’s Tom’s best position? With a cloud hanging over the future of the tackle position, it would not be shocking to see the Packers take an offensive tackle during the 2023 NFL Draft.

With his size, athleticism, and experience playing both left and right tackle, Freeland could be a day-two target for Gutekunst.

He is going to have a long, productive NFL career,” Drew said. “He’s got the aforementioned traits, but he is also a very good person with high character and work ethic. He’s going to give an organization everything he’s got. He’s got tunnel vision and isn’t easily distracted by anything other than climbing the ladder to professional football. His dad is a former BYU football player and was just named head coach at Herriman High. Football is in that family’s blood. They know what it takes to play at the next level and are willing to do it.”

Freeland has traits that can’t be coached. With Green Bay’s success in drafting and developing offensive linemen, Freeland could turn into a pillar on the offensive line at either left or right tackle.

Notre Dame football offers Utah 2024 safety

The Irish are early to offer a fast-rising safety

[autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] football has plenty of ammo when trying to convince a secondary recruit that South Bend is the right place for them. Freshman [autotag]Ben Morrison[/autotag] is coming off an All-American season while former Irish safety [autotag]Kyle Hamilton[/autotag] just finished off an impressive first year with the [autotag]Baltimore Ravens[/autotag].

With that in mind, head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and safeties coach [autotag]Chris O’Leary[/autotag] offered Utah safety [autotag]Davis Andrews[/autotag] today.

The six-foot-three-inch and 195-pound player could eventually outgrow the position and end up as a linebacker, but he currently fits the mold of the big safeties that Notre Dame likes to deploy at the back end of their defense.

The Irish offer is Andrews first big one, as he was previously offered by [autotag]Stanford[/autotag], [autotag]BYU[/autotag], [autotag]Arizona[/autotag] and a few others. Expect Notre Dame to be players for his signature later this year.

Kedon Slovis transfers to BYU

Kedon Slovis will be a #Big12 QB in 2023 at #BYU. We wish him the best.

Where was Kedon Slovis going to land after he announced his decision to transfer from the University of Pittsburgh? We now have our answer.

Slovis transferred to BYU on Christmas Eve, giving the Cougars their new quarterback for 2023 and their move to the Big 12.

You know the story with Slovis: He had a promising 2019 freshman season at USC under Clay Helton and Graham Harrell, but then shoulder problems got in the way of his 2020 season. He clearly did not (could not) throw the ball with maximum zip. His 2021 season was also affected by injuries.

He transferred to Pitt for the 2022 season, and was negatively affected by the fact that Jordan Addison, a Pitt receiver, transferred out of the program and came to USC to play with Caleb Williams. Slovis lacked the elite, game-changing receiver who would have made his life a lot easier. Now Slovis is headed for Provo. We wish him the very best in 2023 and beyond:
