Vikings select star DT in surprising Daniel Jeremiah mock draft

The Minnesota Vikings selected Texas DT Byron Murphy II in NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah’s first mock draft of the 2024 NFL Draft cycle.

The Minnesota Vikings are an interesting team to draft for in 2024 NFL mock drafts. They have needs all over that could be justified with a first round pick. One of those is defensive tackle and that is the direction that NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah went in his first mock draft of the cycle.

At the 11th overall pick, the Minnesota Vikings selected Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II. Not only is he a talented player, but the Vikings would have two Byron Murphy’s on their roster. Here is what Jeremiah had to say about Murphy’s selection.

I believe Murphy is the top defensive tackle in the class. The Vikings need to add more firepower up front.

Murphy was on one of the best defensive fronts in the country next to T’Vondre Sweat and was a force in both the running game and passing game. Is he worth a selection that high? That can be debated but Jeremiah usually knows a thing or two and this should be taken seriously.

Texas’ Byron Murphy II with a #THICCSIX to tie CFP Semifinal vs. Washington

Texas’ Byron Murphy II got himself a #THICCSIX to tie it up against Washington in the CFP Semifinal game.

The only better thing than a touchdown in a huge game is a touchdown by a huge man in a huge game. With 10:08 left in the first half of the Texas Longhorns’ CFP Semifinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl game against the Washington Huskies, Texas was down 14-7, and defensive lineman Byron Murphy II took care of that with this one-yard rumble.

Murphy is 6-foot-1 and 308 pounds (unofficial), so this does count as a #THICCSIX under Touchdown Wire rules that any such play must be performed by a player weighing over 300 pounds.

Also, this was not the first #THICCSIX of Murphy’s career — watch the big man rumble for this one-yard touchdown catch against Wyoming!

Seahawks go all-defense in this 2024 NFL mock draft

Instead, we focused this mock draft entirely on defense.

The Seahawks may have lost a huge game on Thursday night, but we saw a whole lot to like on the field. The Cowboys are one of the most well-rounded teams in the NFL this season and a serious Super Bowl contender, and Seattle took them all the way down to the wire. Most encouraging was the performance by veteran quarterback Geno Smith, who had the best game of his career despite facing a near-constant onslaught by the Dallas pass rush. Some people believe Smith’s awesome outing secured himself the QB1 job, at least at the outset of next season.

We’re not quite there yet, but what this game does definitively prove is that these Seahawks can hang with the best teams in the league. However, they’re going to need to make some adjustments before they start actually beating opponents on that level. Most of those changes may need to be schematic in nature, because it’s hard to find places on this roster outside of the trenches that truly need to be upgraded. We can’t mock a new front office or coaching staff, so we have to do the best we can projecting how to get the right kind of help in next year’s draft.

Considering that they just dropped 35 points on a top-five defense that had their pass rush firing on all cylinders, we decided that their offensive personnel is perfectly fine where it is. Instead, we focused this mock draft entirely on defense. Here’s how it went down.

Cayden Green’s performance in the Cotton Bowl should lead to more opportunities.

Cayden Green impressed in his first Red River Rivalry game and could be the answer to the Sooners left guard inconsistencies.

Coming into the 119th edition of the [autotag]Red River Rivalry[/autotag], there was a feeling the Texas Longhorns‘ great defensive line would provide UT a significant advantage. Texas came into the game with two dominant interior defensive linemen, [autotag]T’Vondre Sweat[/autotag] and [autotag]Byron Murphy II[/autotag].

Both are going to have a future in the [autotag]NFL[/autotag]. It was going to be a tough battle for [autotag]Troy Everett[/autotag], who has spent more time at center than guard in his collegiate career. Early in the game, Everett struggled to handle Sweat and Murphy.

Enter true freshman [autotag]Cayden Green[/autotag].

Green was recruited to play tackle, and his future could be on the outside. However, he’s shown that he has the skill set to be a dominant guard. He further proved that in the biggest game of the year against arguably the best defensive lineman in the conference.

Once Green was inserted, rarely did we hear Sweat’s name called. Holes started to open up that weren’t there before Green started to play. Green was the one who paved the way on Tawee Walker’s walk-in touchdown.

Green talked to reporters on Monday about playing against Texas’ defensive line. “Their line was pretty nice-sized, but at the end of the day, it’s just football. You just have to do your job,” Green said.

And he certainly did his job.

He might have performed so well he should have a starting role along the offensive line this season. Oklahoma hasn’t been able to solidify their left guard spot. Savion Byrd and Everett have struggled with consistency. Green may go through some growing pains, but his ceiling is so high that it may be better to get his future going now.

With the likelihood that OU and Texas could meet again in the Big 12 title game, there’s no better time to get your future going along the offensive line. Green’s shown he’s good enough to play along Oklahoma’s offensive line. The next six games provide a significant opportunity to get the former four-star offensive lineman significant snaps and be better prepared for a possible Red River title game rematch.

As the Sooners work to improve their ground game and solidify their offensive line, Cayden Green has earned an opportunity to run with the starting offensive line. There’s no bigger stage to announce your arrival to college football than on the grandest stage of them all.
