Jestin Jacobs included on preseason watch list for Butkus Award

Oregon’s Jestin Jacobs is on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, which goes to the nation’s best linebacker.

This is why Oregon football and Dan Lanning brought in linebacker Jestin Jacobs over from Iowa.

The Ducks had some problems with their linebacker corps a year ago, but the addition of Jacobs should help with the talent at that spot as well as depth.

Now convincing the former Hawkeye to come out to Eugene looks like an even smarter decision as Jacobs has been included on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award. The honor goes to the best linebacker in the nation and ironically, Jacobs played alongside last year’s winner with Iowa’s Jack Campbell.

Jacobs has seemingly put his history with the injury bug behind him and the Ducks expect him to return to his 2021 form where he accumulated 53 tackles, 33 of those of the solo variety.

Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown named to the 2022 Butkus Award watch list

De’Marvion Overshown is primed for a strong senior season.

Texas senior De’Marvion Overshown has been named to the 2022 Butkus Award watch list. An honor rewarded to the top colligate linebacker in the nation.

Overshown is taking advantage of his COIVD-19 year of extra eligibility and is returning for a fifth season in Austin.

He led the Longhorns defense with 74 total tackles along with 5.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles over 10 games in 2021.

Year two in Pete Kwaitkowski’s system should prove beneficial for Overshown. Texas will use Overshown in a multitude of different ways this upcoming season. Giving him more chances to play on the edge will create more pass rush opportunities on late downs.

Former Longhorn Derrick Johnson took home the Butkus Award back in 2004 and is the only Longhorn to have done so. Here is is look at the full list of player named to the watch list ahead of the 2022 season.

Since the award’s origination in 1985, only one Bulldog has won it, that being Roquan Smith in 2017.Ā  Roquan coincidentally now starts at linebacker for the Chicago Bears.

The redshirt sophomore Ojulari saw time in eleven games in 2019, putting up 33 total tackles (14 solo), 5.5 sacks and one forced fumble.Ā  He is a rising star in the SEC and a notable defender to look out for this season.

Rising senior Monty Rice has been a staple in the Dawgs’ recent ferocious defense.Ā  It is no surprise that Rice is on this watch list.Ā  Rice saw time in 8 games his freshman year, 9 his sophomore year and played all 14 his junior year.Ā  He has racked up 170 total tackles (85 solo), 4 pass deflections, one sack and one forced fumble in his career at UGA.

These two will both play big roles in Georgia’s defense this year, a defense that ranked No. 1 in team defense in 2019.
