Jerry Hughes won’t discuss tweet about Myles Garrett

Buffalo Bills DE Jerry Hughes on Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett.

Just about 99 percent of the internet decide that Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was in the wrong on Thursday and he certainly was.

Garrett got in a mix up with Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph and ripped his helmet off and swung it at him.

Garrett and others have since been suspended, Garrett is done for the year while Rudolph was fined by the NFL for his part.

But of those leaving comments about the incident, Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes left a bit of a cryptic message. He did not condone what Garrett did, but tweeted: “It’s a violent game played by violent ppl (people).”

Hughes was approached by a group of reporters on Friday in the Bills locker room following the team’s final day of practice ahead of their Week 11 meeting with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Hughes was very annoyed when asked about the tweets.

“My team runs the tweet. I don’t talk about the internet. It’s not real,” Hughes said.

Interrupting a follow-up question, Hughes repeated himself.

“My team runs the tweet. I don’t talk about the internet. It’s not real,” Hughes said. “Are we going to talk about the team coming up [the Dolphins]? Are we going to talk about the Dolphins, guys? Are we not talking about the Dolphins? We’re not talking about the Dolphins?”

The only thing further that Hughes would address is what his coach, Sean McDermott, said about the incident. Earlier in the day, McDermott revealed that he told his players in a team meeting that Garrett’s type of behavior was unacceptable.

“He addressed the team and he said we shouldn’t do that. Everyone says don’t hit someone in the head with a helmet. So we’re moving forward. We’re focused on the Dolphins,” Hughes said.

“I haven’t thought too much about it, not thinking about it,” Hughes added. “I’m focused on Miami, how we can go down there and get a win, so we can get back on track.”

While Hughes is focusing on Miami and not his tweets, he might want to delete this questionable message. He then later followed up his interview with another tweet which was a video of another helmet-swinging incident in 2013 with an emoji shrugging shoulders:

For what it’s worth, Hughes is also the only Bills player who might not play against the Dolphins. He was listed on the team’s final injury report as questionable with a groin injury. That also could have factored into his emotions.

Sean McDermott says Bills discussed Myles Garrett in team meeting

Buffalo Bills’ Sean McDermott on Cleveland Browns’ Myles Garrett.

Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett send shockwaves across the sporting world on Thursday Night Football when he ripped Mason Rudolph’s helmet right off the Steelers QB’s head and swung it at him.

Some analysts, fans, and even players have suggested legal action against him.

Like most, the Bills were watching when things unfolded or saw a replay of the action. Buffalo head Sean McDermott is amongst that faction.

“My reaction is, there’s no place in the game for that. Absolutely none,” McDermott said to WGR-550 radio.

The coach said he was so taken aback by what happened, he discussed the incident with his team during a meeting earlier Friday morning.

“We talked about it this morning in a team meeting. Just to make sure we are on the same page. When you take someone’s well-being into your own hands, that’s crossing the line. We like to believe we do things right, that we’re a class organization and it is a physical, aggressive sport. But there is a line,” McDermott said.

“The general message was that we’re an aggressive, physical football team, and within that, there’s going to be some penalties. It’s an aggressive sport. Things get called once in a while. We understand that, I understand that. There’s a line that, as a class organization, you don’t cross,” McDermott added.

Tempers certainly run high during a football game, but even football-lifer types of folks like McDermott are stunned at Garrett’s actions. Many Bills players took to Twitter to say just as much in the moment as well on Thursday. Offensive lineman Jon Feliciano was among them and suggested Garrett’s NFL career could be over.

“Myles Garrett about to be the star player in the XFL,” Feliciano said.

Bills playoff picture: Browns down Steelers, likely lose Myles Garrett

Buffalo Bills playoff picture with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Myles Garrett and Mason Rudolph.

There’s a lot to note from Week 11 of the NFL season in regard to the Bills’ playoff picture.

And it’s only Friday.

So far, we’ve only seen Thursday Night Football. That contest was between two teams within reach of the Bills in the AFC playoff picture.

Heading into the game, the Browns needed to, and did, win, over the Steelers. The score was 21-7. Pittsburgh was holding the second wild card spot at 5-4 but no longer is. Cleveland’s now a 4-6 and while still on the outside looking in, they’re hot after beating the Bills last week, too.

That also means if they stay hot, Buffalo will have lost that tiebreaker.

But the huge story out of this game is Myles Garrett. The pass rusher is Cleveland’s best player and his season could be over. After getting tied up with Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph, he ripped off his helmet and swung it at him.

Yes, that happened:

Garrett owned up to what happened after the game.

“I made a mistake, I lost my cool and I regret it,” Garrett said.

But some are calling for legal action against Garrett for what he did. This could get ugly.

Regardless, Rudolph was not happy, naturally.

“I know it’s bush league, and I know it’s a total coward move on his part,” Rudolph said.

But to round things out, this is a big blow to the Browns’ chances of catching the Bills in the standings.

Bills at Dolphins: 5 matchups to watch

The Bills will travel to Miami to face the red hot Dolphins who are coming off two wins.

The Buffalo Bills are coming off a disappointing loss on Sunday to the Cleveland Browns, after a last minute touchdown from Baker Mayfield.

The Bills now face the streaking Miami Dolphins who are coming off two unexpected wins. If the Bills can pullout the victory in Miami they can help secure themselves in one of the two Wild Card positions.

That being said, the Bills must win the games within the game to defeat Miami. Here are five matchups to watch during Bills vs. Dolphins:

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Credit: Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Josh Allen vs. Ryan Fitzpatrick

Josh Allen has been compared to a lot of quarterbacks during his career, including two former Buffalo quarterbacks: Tyrod Taylor, and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

While playing Cleveland on Sunday, Bills quarterback Josh Allen threw the ball 41 times, tying his career-high. He also threw for 266 yards, which is his career-high. That 41 attempts may seem like an outlier, but Allen and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll seem like they want to make that the norm.

During the week, Allen said that he had the “green light” to take more shots down the field. This could be an excellent week to try this new approach, Miami’s secondary is one of the worst in the NFL, allowing on average 244.9 yards per game. If Allen can take advantage of this green light it may be a long day for the Miami defense.

If there’s one quarterback in the NFL that always seems to have the green light, it’s Ryan Fitzpatrick. Bills fans remember Fitzy’s time in Buffalo, he had plenty of big moments, but just as many disappointing ones too.

Fitzpatrick has shown that same inconsistency with the Dolphins. In his first game against Buffalo he showed off his playmaking abilities. He threw for 282 yards, one touchdown, but a crucial interception in the red zone. Fitzpatrick has led the Dolphins to two straight victories, which seemed almost impossible at the beginning of the season.

If either of these two gunslingers can get their offenses on track early, it will be a tough outing for both defenses.

NFL Best Bets: Three underdog locks for Week 11

Our weekly NFL underdog betting staple continues into Week 11, where Ken Pomponio features three teams likely to upset their underdog odds

[jwplayer JLUmLtYE]

NFL Week 10 was wild, a memorable week and a surprise-filled week which featured nine of 13 underdogs covering the mid-week lines.

We weren’t on either of the big underdogs (Atlanta Falcons +11.5 in New Orleans, Miami Dolphins +9.5 in Indianapolis) who not only covered but also won outright, but we did go 3-0 to snap a run of three straight 1-2 weekly finishes and up our season record to 18-12.

Now it’s back to board to find more underdog value, utilizing, as usual, Wednesday’s posted point spreads from BetMGM.com.

Dolphins (+6) vs. Buffalo Bills

Nov 10, 2019: Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Brian Spurlock – USA TODAY Sports

Don’t look now, but the Dolphins’ tanking mission is suddenly headed the wrong direction.

Behind the fearless play of veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and an energized, no-name defense, Miami is 2-0 in November and has covered in five straight outings after a brutal 0-4 against-the-spread start in which the Dolphins were outscored 163-26.

The Bills, meanwhile, have gone 2-2 after a 4-1 start, including a tighter-than-it-looks 31-21 home win over the Dolphins in Week 7.

Keep riding with Fitzpatrick and Co. here as the oddsmakers have been slow to adjust to the new-and-improved Dolphins. They’re playing hard for a first-year coach in Brian Flores, who clearly doesn’t include “tanking” among his best career interests.

Philadelphia Eagles (+3½) vs. New England Patriots

Feb 4, 2018: Eagles coach Doug Pederson (left) and Patriots coach Bill Belichick reunite Sunday. Matthew Emmons – USA TODAY Sports

It hasn’t proven to be wise wagering against Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and Co., who are 10-3 in their last 13 games ATS dating back to Week 17 of last season — and coming off the bye in this one.

But the host Eagles are coming off their bye, as well, and they are 4-2 after starting off 1-2.

Philly is sure to be fired up for the teams’ first meeting since Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis, and while the Pats are sure to be focused coming off their first loss followed by the bye, we’ll take a solid team getting a field goal and the always-tempting half-point hook at home.

Arizona Cardinals (+11½) at San Francisco 49ers

Oct 31, 2019: Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray faces the 49ers again. Mark J. Rebilas – USA TODAY Sports

If it seems like we just saw this NFC West matchup, it’s because we did, two weeks ago in the desert as the visiting Niners prevailed in a much-tougher-than-expected 28-25 contest on Halloween.

In between, San Fran suffered its first loss, falling to the visiting Seattle Seahawks 27-24 in an overtime duel Monday night that arguably has been the best NFL game this season.

The 49ers also continue to battle the health bug with tight end George Kittle and receiver Emmanuel Sanders likely to be game-time decisions. And quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is battling some obvious shakiness after completing only 24 of 46 passes Monday for 248 yards, a touchdown and an interception, along with two lost fumbles.

Rookie QB Kyle Murray and the Cards, meanwhile, are 3-6-1 straight up but have been one of the league’s best ATS squads at 7-3, including five covers in their last six outings.

We were on Arizona last week in Tampa, and we’ll go with the Cards again here Sunday afternoon in San Fran where the home team is simply giving too many points.

PFF names Bills’ Leslie Frazier NFL’s second-best defensive play-caller

Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier named one of NFL’s best defensive play-caller by Pro Football Focus.

The Buffalo Bills defense is Sean McDermott’s baby. But defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier plays his part, too.

Pro Football Focus recently recognized this by naming Frazier the second-best defensive play-caller in the NFL recently.

Here’s how PFF explains his selection:

LESLIE FRAZIER, BUFFALO BILLS
While the Patriots and the 49ers get all the attention with notable defensive leaders on the sideline and on the field, the Buffalo Bills are very quietly one of the best defenses in the NFL without the star power. The highest-graded Bills defender is Micah Hyde, and he ranks just 62nd among all defensive players with 300-plus snaps this season. This emphasizes exactly how this metric for coaching is built: a team constructed of players who are good but not great is not expected to have consistently great results, and when they exceed expectations as a team, that credit goes to the defensive play-caller. Compare this with a 49ers team that has been great but is also getting exceptional play from a bevy of players at all levels of the field and has faced an easier slate of games to this point.

Despite the lack of star power, the Bills’ defense is on par with the best in the NFL. On first- and second-down passes, the Bills’ opponents are getting closer to scoring next just 44% of the time, which ranks third to the Patriots and 49ers. On all passing plays, the Bills are allowing the fourth-lowest expected points added and have done so without a whole slew of turnovers, forcing just nine, which is below the league average of 11.3.

Buffalo’s defense has left some room for improvement in recent weeks against the run, but their secondary and second level of their defense is amongst the best in the NFL, which is why they’re ranked as the NFL’s third-best defense in terms of yards allowed.

The Bills’ coaching staff certainly deserves their fair share of credit for the unit’s successes so far this season. Because of this, could Frazier be considered a future head coaching candidate?

Frazier only ranked behind the Patriots’ Bill Belichick on PFF’s list of best defensive play-callers. You love to hate him, but that’s some good company.

As of now, Bills will not attend Colin Kaepernick workout

Buffalo Bills not attending Colin Kaepernick workout.

The NFL announced earlier this week that they are inviting former quarterback and company employee, Colin Kaepernick, to hold a private workout for teams.

Kaepernick, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, took a stand against what he called social injustices in the United States by taking a knee during the national anthem. He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016.

Perhaps because he was blackballed or perhaps because teams were simply too afraid to sign him, nobody has. Perhaps that will change this weekend.

His workout is slated for Saturday in Atlanta and on Thursday, the NFL named 11 teams that will attend the event, as of now. The Bills are not among them.

Those who are going to be in attendance, per NFL communications, are the Cardinals, Falcons, Browns, Broncos, Lions, Dolphins, Patriots, Giants, Jets, Bucs and Redskins.

That could change, but for now, the Bills will not be represented there.

But Pro Football Talk reports only one team has declined to attend, the Panthers. So there’s still at least some possibility.
