WATCH: Urban Meyer discusses being chosen as BTN’s Coach of the Decade

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer sat down with FOX Sports’ Rob Stone to discuss being selected as BTN’s Coach of the Decade.

The Big Ten Network just wrapped up selecting All-Decade Teams for both hoops and football, capping it all off with the head football Coach of the Decade, as selected by a BTN panel.

The winner of that award was none other than former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, and although it’s a mythical award, he had to be ecstatic about the recognition. But what did he think about being selected?

Rob Stone of FOX College Football sat down with Meyer (virtually of course) and not only congratulated the former head man in Columbus, but asked him some thought-provoking questions.

You can listen to the short interview yourself by clicking on the below Twitter video shared by FOX and hear what Meyer says about the 2012 team, the national championship year, what coaches he enjoyed competing against, and more.

Ohio State leads all programs with eight selected to BTN’s All Decade Football Team

The Ohio State football program led all schools with a total of eight selected to the Big Ten Network’s All-Decade Team.

You kind of knew it was going to happen, but Ohio State led all Big Ten programs with a total of eight players selected to BTN’s All-Decade Team. This was after the Buckeyes led all programs with six players selected to the All-Decade basketball Team as well. Yes, Ohio State is your king of the decade when it comes to the revenue sports in the Big Ten.

We’ve recapped the selections already individually, but here is a recap of all eight Ohio State players that were selected. Keep in mind this doesn’t even include the Second-Team selections that also had a slew of OSU players appearing.

Quarterback

J.T. Barrett

Offensive Line

Billy Price
Wyatt Davis

Defensive Line

Chase Young
Joey Bosa

Defensive Back

Malik Hooker

All-Purpose

Braxton Miller

Coach

Urban Meyer

All of these are well-deserving, and you could sure make a case for others that appeared on the Second Team for OSU to have been elevated to the First Team, but maybe there would be a little anarchy from the other programs if guys like Jeff Okudah and Ezekiel Elliott found their way here too (but more on that later).

All told, it was a good showing by Ohio State, as you’d expect. Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin all came in with four players on the team which is a distant second place.

Urban Meyer named Big Ten All-Decade Coach of the Year

In really nobody’s surprise, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer was named BTN’s Big Ten Coach of the Decade. He more than earned it.

The Big Ten Network is wrapping up its efforts to identify and name Big Ten All-Decade Teams for both college basketball and football. Ohio State had more representation on the hoops squad than any other Big Ten program, and the same is true for football as things were unveiled.

And on that note, as a part of its last announcement, the BTN panelist picked its Coach of the Decade, and to really nobody’s surprise, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer was selected.

Meyer came to Columbus on the tails of some hard times for the program, at least to Buckeye standards. Jim Tressel had just been sent packing for his role in “tattoogate” and lying to investigators in other matters. You know the story well, but Luke Fickell took over the program in a transition year that resulted in a 6-7 season after a bowl loss to Florida.

In came Meyer and instantly restored the program to an elite level. His first team somehow went 12-0 but had nowhere to go for the postseason because of sanctions imposed by the NCAA as a result of all the things discussed earlier. From there, he continued the winning ways, laying down a ridiculous 83-9 (.902) overall record, and an even better 54-4 (.931) record in conference games. Let that sink in.

Now, realize he went 7-0 against Michigan. That’s pretty amazing stuff, and BTN wrapped it up all nicely with the below summary video it shared on Twitter.

If there’s any knock on Meyer, it’s the notion that he probably should have won more Big Ten Championships (just three), and national titles (just one) at Ohio State with all that winning.

Still, nobody came close in the Big Ten, and Meyer will forever go down as one of the best to ever coach in the conference.

The Big Ten Network is continuing through its journey of identifying Big Ten All-Decade Teams for both hoops and football, and it’s nearly coming to an end. Ohio State has been well represented in both basketball, and now football.

The latest announcement resulted in former Ohio State quarterbacks both being included on the All-Decade Team. Quarterback J.T. Barrett was named the QB of the Decade, and Braxton Miller received the All-Purpose Player of the Decade.

When it comes to Barrett, he rewrote so many Big Ten career quarterback records that it’s hard to count how many he now holds. He took over for an injured Braxton Miller during 2014 and never really looked back, aside from a blip in 2015 when he and Cardale Jones split time through half of the season. He wasn’t flashy, but he was the consummate leader and great distributor of the ball who had the ability to get tough yards on the ground. He was named the Big Ten’s Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year three times (2014, 2016, and 2017), and won the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Football for best player in the conference in 2016.

Miller was another dynamic player under center, but he was forced to switch to wide receiver during his senior year in 2015 because of an injury to his throwing shoulder. He was twice the Big Ten’s MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Griese-Brees QB of the Year. He could make a two-yard gain exciting, and still owns the most famous spin move in the history of college football.

Well done by both of these talented guys.

Former Ohio State DB Malik Hooker makes BTN All-Decade Team

Former Ohio State big-play safety Malik Hooker was named to BTN’s All-Decade Football Team on Wednesday.

It was only one year, but what a year it was.

Former Ohio State safety Malik Hooker grabbed a starting safety spot in 2016, took the opportunity and ran with it. And now, he has been selected by a BTN panel to the Big Ten’s All-Decade football team.

You’re simply not going to find too many guys as athletic as Hooker. But in his first and only season starting for the Buckeyes, he was able to take those athletic gifts and become one whale of a big-play safety, recording seven interceptions in just one season. He quickly became a First-Team All-Big Ten player and Consensus All-American out of nowhere.

That breakout year resulted in Hooker being selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Joining Hooker as defensive backs on the All-Decade Team were Iowa’s Desmond King, Antoine Winfield, Jr. of Minnesota, and Michigan State’s Darqueze Denard.

Stay with us as we continue to follow the other Buckeye players that are announced by BTN as All-Decade performers.

You may be wondering about the ommission of Jeff Okudah like we were. Even though there’s an argument to be made for him also being included on the All-Decade Team, he was selected to the Second Team. We’re not sure that’s right, but maybe the BTN panel is getting Buckeye fatigue?

Ohio State’s Chase Young, Nick Bosa make BTN’s All-Decade Team

Ohio State football edge rushers Chase Young and Joey Bosa were selected to BTN”s All-Decade Big Ten football Team Thursday.

The Ohio State representation on the Big Ten Network’s All-Decade Teams continue. The Buckeyes already had more selections in hoops than any other program, and have — as expected — continued to have plenty of players selected for the football version of the squads as well.

The latest two Ohio State players to make the All-Decade Big Ten football team were defensive end Chase Young and Nick Bosa. BTN unveiled the two as a part of its announcement of the defensive lineman and wide receivers. That means that of the four D-lineman, two belong to Ohio State. One could also make an argument for Nick Bosa over Purdue’s Ryan Kerrigan, but I guess three from the same school would be a bit ridiculous. J.J. Watt of Wisconsin was the fourth member of the defensive line.

You know both of these guys pretty well. Young simply took games over at times as an edge rusher, led the entire FBS in sacks last season despite sitting out two games, and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He was a First-Team All-Big Ten and consensus All-American as well in 2019.

Bosa hit the ground running with significant minutes as a freshman and played dominant on the edge for three years before departing early for the NFL Draft. He too was a First-Team All-Big Ten performer but was also a two-time consensus All-American.

Ezekiel Elliott, Ryan Shazier make BTN All-Decade football squad

BTN revealed its All-Decade running backs and linebackers, and Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliott and Ryan Shazier made the Second Team.

By now, hopefully you know that the Big Ten Network has been going through a journey of identifying the best conference basketball and football players over the last decade. It has completed its efforts with hoops and is now on to football. Ohio State might be a so-called football school, but it actually had more representation on the All-Decade basketball teams than any other program in the Big Ten. In fact, Aaron Craft, D’Angelo Russell, Evan Turner, and Jared Sullinger all made the cut.

So, you know there’s going to be a lot scarlet and gray with the football reveals, and we already have our first two. BTN named its All-Decade football running backs and linebackers on Monday, and both Ezekiel Elliott and Ryan Shazier made Second Team All-Decade.

You know Elliott’s story well, but what many forget is that during the 2014 national title run at Ohio State, he wasn’t really a household name until the postseason when he went on an unbelievable tear — going for over 200 yards on the ground in each of the three games. That catapulted him to being arguably the best back in the country in 2015. That year, he took home the Big Ten’s MVP, Running Back of the Year, and Offensive Player of the Year.

For Shazier, many know him more for his continued recovery from a devastating spinal chord injury while playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he dominated on the field at Ohio State as a fast-twitch playmaker at the linebacker spot. In 2013, Shazier was a First Team All-Big Ten and First Team All-American.

Two Ohio State lineman named to BTN’s All-Decade Team

Two Ohio State offensive lineman were selected by a 24-team panelist from BTN to be on the networks All-Decade First-Team for football.

In case you haven’t been paying attention — and who could blame you with all the crazy things going on in the world today — the Big Ten Network has been unveiling its BTN All-Decade squads. It has already announced the three different All-Decade basketball teams, and has now moved on to the All-Decade Big Ten football squads.

On that note, one former Ohio State lineman and even one current one have both made the First-Team. Former center Billy Price along with current left guard Wyatt Davis are both a part of all the fun.

Here’s what the Ohio State athletic department said about Price:

“Price is one of the great offensive linemen in Ohio State’s storied history. A two-time All-American, including a unanimous selection in 2017, Price is one of just six Buckeye offensive linemen to win a major national award when he was named the recipient of the 2017 Rimington Trophy as the nation’s outstanding center. Price also was named the Big Ten’s Rimington-Pace offensive lineman of the year that season and set a program record with 55 consecutive games started from 2014 through 2017.”

But not to be outdone, and in a rather surprising move, Wyatt Davis was also included. Here’s what OSU said about one of the current anchors of the offensive line in their release.

“Davis, from Bellflower, Calif., blossomed into one of the nation’s top interior linemen last season as a first-year starter. While paving the way for an offense that averaged 529.9 yards per game, Davis was voted a first team All-American by the Associated Press, CBS Sports and The Sporting News. He is one of three returning starters along the offensive line for the 2020 Buckeyes and has already been named a preseason first team All-American by The Walter Camp Football Foundation and The Sporting News.”

Davis himself was also taken aback.

“I’m at a loss for words and I was so excited when I get the news,” Davis told BTN’s Dave Revsine. “I still have to finish strong but this is definitely something nice to look back on.”

Price and Davis were joined on the First-Team All Decade Big Ten offensive line team by Taylor Lewan of Michigan, Iowa’s Brandon Scherff, Michael Dieter of Wisconsin, and Indiana’s Dan Feeney.

Stay tuned as more of these are revealed throughout the next few days.
