Spartans in the NBA: Cassius Winston debuts, Xavier Tillman sets new career highs

Cassius Winston was able to make his debut and Xavier Tillman set new career highs in a thrilling night for Spartans in the NBA.

The last time there was a Spartans in the NBA, two players had yet to make their NBA debuts. Well now that two weeks have passed, Cassius Winston and Xavier Tillman were both able to make their NBA debuts! Draymond Green was also able to make his season debut and has had a few good performances in his return. Jaren Jackson Jr. has still not made his season debut, but should be returning within the next few weeks.

Let’s see how other Spartans have done in the NBA in the past two weeks:

Michigan State weren’t the only Spartans to play on Christmas Day. Former Spartans Bryn Forbes and Gary Harris also played Friday.

Michigan State weren’t the only Spartans to play on Christmas Day. Former Spartans Bryn Forbes and Gary Harris took the court in their respective NBA games. Forbes and the Bucks were able to win 138-99 over the Draymond Green-less Golden State Warriors. While Harris was on the losing end of the night cap game against the Los Angeles Clippers, 121-108.

Harris got the start for the Denver Nuggets and was pretty quiet only recording two points on 1-5 shooting from the field. He did have two assists including one very nice behind-the-back.

Former Beecher star Monte Morris dribbled the ball into the mid range area, while Harris was cutting towards the basket. Morris bounce passed it to Harris, who then was able to pass it behind-the-back to Paul Millsap for the easy put in bucket.

Former Spartan Bryn Forbes officially signs deal with the Milwaukee Bucks

Former Michigan State Spartan Bryn Forbes has officially signed his deal with the Milwaukee Bucks.

[jwplayer uZffHiR1-PROpJzTY]

It was first reported 5 days ago by Adrian Wojnarowski that former Spartan guard Bryn Forbes was heading to the Milwaukee Bucks, now that deal is official. On Thanksgiving, the Bucks announced on their Twitter account that Forbes is officially joining the team.

Forbes’ deal is two-years, $4.7 million, and should put him in a position to contribute off the bench for a championship contender in Milwaukee.

[vertical-gallery id=32271]

Forbes averaged 11.2 points per game last season for the San Antonio Spurs. He spent his first four seasons with the Spurs after signing there as an undrafted free agent. Over the last two years in San Antonio, Forbes started in all but two games for the Spurs. I expect that he will fill a bench role in Milwaukee but with his experience and shooting, he can always get slotted in with the starters.

Sixers 2020 free agency guide: Bryn Forbes brings toughness, shooting

Bryn Forbes could be a solid option in free agency for the Philadelphia 76ers.

The free agency period continues to inch closer as the Philadelphia 76ers look to continue to improve their team with the few assets they have right now.

In terms of free agency, the Sixers have roughly $6 million to spend. This is due to the fact they handed out a lot of expensive deals in the 2019 offseason, but a few options out there  can help and fit in their price range.

One option out there who will fill multiple needs and who promises to come cheap is Bryn Forbes. An injury cut his 2019-20 season short after 63 games, and he averaged 11.2 points while shooting 38.8% from deep. He provides a lot of toughness for the position. Not only are his offensive numbers solid, but also his perimeter defense is something that will be valued on a Doc Rivers-led team.

The Athletic’s John Hollinger writes this about Forbes’ free agency chances:

Forbes weirdly started all season in San Antonio despite the Spurs having a multitude of reserves who were clearly better. Along the way, Forbes made his case for being the league’s least athletic guard, finishing the year with zero dunks, zero blocks and a 4.3 percent Rebound Rate.

There’s still a role for him in the league somewhere. He’s a 40 percent career 3-point shooter, and physically strong enough that he rarely gets posted up even as a 6-2 shooting guard. Similar to Langston Galloway above, he’s a good fit on a team with a ball-dominant wing that just needs surrounding shooting.

Forbes would fill a role and he would do it on a cheap deal which is what president Daryl Morey and general manager Elton Brand are thinking right now. The Sixers will most likely be more active on the trade market than in free agency, but, among the options the team can find on the open market, Forbes is one of those diamonds-in-the-rough type of players.

2020 free agency options for Elton Brand, Sixers: Spurs shooter Bryn Forbes

Free-agent guard Bryn Forbes would be a perfect fit for the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency.

The Philadelphia 76ers now head into an important offseason looking to pick up the pieces following a very disappointing 2019-20 season where they were looking to compete for a championship. Instead, they were swept out of Round 1 by the Boston Celtics.

A season such as this one brings big changes to an organization as the Sixers began making those changes rather quickly. They fired Brett Brown shortly after the Game 4 loss to Boston and they are now beginning to interview candidates to replace him.

General manager Elton Brand must now try and upgrade the roster around stars Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid and one guy who makes a lot of sense for them is Bryn Forbes of the San Antonio Spurs. His 3-point shooting ability will be a perfect complement off Simmons who is adept at finding open shooters successfully–see Redick, JJ.

As Bleacher Report writes on Forbes:

Forbes should be on the Sixers’ radar either way. Almost half of his shot attempts came as catch-and-shoot threes this season, of which he nailed 39.5 percent, and he put down 40.0 percent of his pull-up triples while also converting a respectable 52.7 percent of his looks on drives. His defensive effort is inconsistent, and he doesn’t have the physical tools to make up for an inconstant motor, but Philly isn’t hurting for stoppers. It has the cast of lock-down try-hards, for now, to task someone such as Forbes with scoring like hell and little else.

He averaged 11.2 points and he shot 38.8% from deep on the season while also earning a starting role in San Antonio due to his defense and shooting. The Sixers could use a guy like him on this current roster in order to make the spacing work. He will likely come cheap as well as Philadelphia does not have much cap space to work with for this upcoming free agency market. [lawrence-related id=37660,37656,37653]

Three Michigan State Basketball alumni to play in NBA Bubble restart

There are currently three Michigan State players set to play in the NBA’s Bubble restart at Disney.

[jwplayer 7HOYimhW]

After about a week of scrimmages, the NBA season is poised to full restart on Thursday, July 30th from the NBA Bubble at Walt Disney World in Florida, and there are three Michigan State Basketball alumni set to play in the upcoming games.

There are six Spartans currently on NBA rosters, but there are only 22 teams attending the Bubble’s limited season and play-in tournament, which means that three players will not be attending the Bubble. Those players are Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors, Miles Bridges of the Charlotte Hornets, and Denzel Valentine of the Chicago Bulls.

The players who will be in the Bubble are:

  • G Bryn Forbes, San Antonio Spurs
  • G Gary Harris, Denver Nuggets
  • PF/C Jaren Jackson Jr., Memphis Grizzlies

Bryn Forbes and Jaren Jackson will both be in action on Friday while Gary Harris and the Denver Nuggets will have their first game on Saturday.

Nets face unpredictable opponent in Spurs on Thursday

The Brooklyn Nets can’t overlook Gregg Popovich’s coaching ability — even with this year’s disappointing San Antonio Spurs team.

The San Antonio Spurs are off to a strong start in their candidacy for 2019-20’s most disappointing team.

The Spurs were a playoff team just last season and, as the No. 7 seed, took the Denver Nuggets to game seven in the first round of the playoffs. And they still have the majors pieces from that team: DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, Derrick White, Bryn Forbes and Rudy Gay. Plus, San Antonio has Dejounte Murray back from his ACL tear. Marco Belinelli and Patty Mills are still around, too. Jakob Poeltl is a tough interior defender.

Now, this group has knocked off the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers, but they also lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Not to mention the Pistons blew them out of Detroit to the tune of 34 points.

The Pistons have beaten Brooklyn, too, but only by four and in the early stages of the season, when the Nets didn’t have an identity. Now Brooklyn does, though. The Spurs, not so much.

But unlike the Cavs, San Antonio has what should be a strong core. The Spurs can absolutely steal a win on Thursday, especially since the game is on their turf.

Also, if the Nets play like they did in New Orleans, they’ll be in trouble.

Though, the fact the Nets were sloppy against the Pelicans could work to their own benefit in San Antonio. Kenny Atkinson wanted to go over the offense before the game, so Brooklyn should be a bit more refined on Thursday.
