Jets snap count: Depth chart breakdown vs. Raiders

Jets snap count: Depth chart breakdown vs. Raiders

The Jets suffered another disappointing primetime loss, this time to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday Night Football in Week 10.

The Jets fell to 4-5 with the loss but still only sit one game out of a playoff spot in what has become a tight AFC playoff race.

Here, we’ll take a look at the snap counts for the Jets in Week 10 and get another sense of how the Jets are utilizing some of their players on each side of the football.

2023 NFL mid-season All-Breakout Team

These players have gone from potential depth pieces to household names in the last two months- this is the 2023 NFL mid-season All-Breakout team

Every year, several players blindside us with amazing seasons. Peyton Hillis in 2011, Gary Barnidge in 2015, Terrelle Pryor in 2016 (the Browns have had a lot of one-year wonders)- they all come to mind.

These players, though, are hoping their standout seasons are more than just a shot in the dark. Here is the midseason All-Breakout team.

Chargers’ causes for concern vs. Jets

Here is why the Jets could come out victorious on Monday night.

The last time we saw Los Angeles, they notched a cathartic blowout victory over the Bears on Sunday Night Football. But the Chargers still sit at 3-4, with apparent issues plaguing them on both sides of the ball.

Here are four reasons to be concerned that those issues sink them against the Jets on Monday night.

Jets defense poses tough challenge for Chargers QB Justin Herbert

The Jets defense is the toughest the Chargers will face all season.

Quarterback Justin Herbert is removed from his most productive performance of the season in the Chargers’ win over the Bears last Sunday.

Chicago’s defense wasn’t anything to write home about, but the same can’t be said about his next task when Los Angeles travels to New York to face the Jets.

The Jets’ defense has not been quarterback-friendly, as they’re fourth in passing yards per attempt (5.7) and fifth in passing yards per game (184.4).

New York has faced Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Bills’ Josh Allen in their first seven games. They combined for three touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Mahomes and Allen faced the Jets at MetLife Stadium in primetime games this season and were kept in check.

The Jets are loaded at each level of the defense and it starts up front, where their interior defensive linemen and edge defenders are second to none at generating pressure on opposing quarterbacks. They lead the league in pressure rate at 29.5%.

The Chargers offensive line had its best performance in pass protection against Chicago, but the group has been uneven in that department this season, especially after losing center Corey Linsley. When the heat has been on, Herbert hasn’t handled it well, looking frantic and rattled.

On the back end of the defense, New York has a suffocating secondary that makes it difficult for pass catchers to create separation.

Because of how good the Jets are against the pass, this might be a game where Los Angeles looks to establish an efficient rushing attack. While the Bolts haven’t been the best running the football, New York hasn’t defended it well, either, as they have allowed the fifth-most rushing yards (1,014).

It helps that the Jets rank near the bottom in total offense, but the Chargers must find ways to overcome their tough defense, especially in the second half, as they have only scored 16 points in the third and fourth quarters of the past four games.

Bryce Huff says new contract negotiations haven’t begun

Bryce Huff says new contract negotiations haven’t begun

Bryce Huff has been a force coming off the edge for the Jets and has become a menace for opposing quarterbacks. Huff is currently second on the team with 2.5 sacks — Quinton Jefferson has three. Even in limited time, Huff is proving to be one of the better pass-rushers in the NFL.

Huff is also set to become a free agent after the season. The Jets placed a second-round tender on the then-restricted free agent Huff last offseason. The tender pays him $4.304 million, fully guaranteed.

As of now, there is no progress on a new deal for Huff. There hasn’t even been a beginning, as Huff told reporters Wednesday, saying talks on a new contract have yet to begin.

Huff also said how much it means to him to have the fans embrace him as much as they have and how they are all calling for him to get paid.

Just about anyone you ask will tell you Huff deserves to be paid. The Jets currently have about $7.3 million in salary cap space and just over $30 million in space for 2024.

The Jets do have quite a few free agents for 2024. But you absolutely can make the argument that Huff is their No. 1 free agent on the board. Yes, the Jets invested a first-round pick in Will McDonald, but having a vast amount of pass-rushers, as the Jets do now, is never a bad thing.

Also, it’s pretty much a guarantee they won’t be bringing back Carl Lawson next season, so there’s at least one open space on the depth chart that they absolutely can use Huff to fill, and perhaps give him more work.

The Jets do still have time to work something out with Huff, but the sooner the better.

Bryce Huff dubbed as a ‘secret superstar’ through Week 6

Jets’ Bryce Huff was mentioned as a ‘secret superstar’ through Week 6 by Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar.

Bryce Huff played a large part in the New York Jets upsetting the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6 with his consistent pressure on Jalen Hurts. Following another stellar performance from the former undrafted edge defender, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar mentioned Huff as his ‘secret superstar’ through the first six weeks of the season.

Here is what Farrar had to say about Huff:

Jets edge-rusher Bryce Huff. One thing you look for in great teams or great units – and the Jets’ defense is legitimately great – is the number of unheralded guys who pop up out of nowhere and just start dominating. Few players in the NFL have done that at Huff’s level this season. This is an undrafted free agent out of Memphis who had a few nice moments in his first three NFL seasons, but who expected this? Huff has been an absolute edge monster in Robert Saleh’s defense, with three sacks and 34 total pressures in just 114 pass-rushing snaps. The only edge-rushers with more pressures this season are Maxx Crosby with 38 in 221 pass-rush snaps, and Aidan Hutchinson with 36 in 249.

Huff leads the Jets in pressures this season and what makes his production even more impressive is the fact he’s seeing limited pass-rushing snaps. The Memphis product has also tallied the second-most sacks (2.5) on the Jets despite rotating with Jermaine Johnson and the other edge rushers.

Before the 2020 season, Huff signed with the Jets as an undrafted rookie out of Memphis. In recent years, Huff has evolved into a lethal pass rusher who is more than deserving of a new contract before he hits free agency after this season.

The Jets boast one of the best defensive units in the NFL, and that was displayed in the team’s 20-14 victory over the Eagles in which the defense forced four takeaways. Even though the sack numbers aren’t showing up — at least yet — Huff is becoming one of the premier edge defenders in the league.

4-Down Territory: No more undefeateds, NFL’s best team, Secret Superstars, Worst of the Week!

The NFL’s best team? No more undefeateds? Secret Superstars? Worst of the Week? Doug Farrar and Kyle Madson cover it all in “4-Down Territory.”

  1. Which team is the NFL’s best now that there are no more undefeated teams?
  2. Will another NFL team ever go undefeated again, or are the 1972 Miami Dolphins safe for eternity?
  3. Who’s the league’s most underrated player?
  4. And of course, our Worst of the Week!
