Broncos’ 53-man roster for Sunday’s game vs. Jets

This is what the Broncos’ 53-man roster looks like going into Sunday’s game against the Jets.

The Denver Broncos placed linebacker Alex Singleton on injured reserve last week, ruling him out for the rest of the 2024 NFL season.

To fill Singleton’s former spot on the active roster, the Broncos promoted running back Tyler Badie from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Denver also signed two linebackers to the practice squad.

NFL teams can also elevate two players from the practice squad each week. This week, Denver elevated linebacker Levelle Bailey and defensive back Tanner McCalister.

Following those moves, here’s a look at Denver’s updated 53-man roster for their Week 4 showdown with the New York Jets on Sunday.

Broncos injury report: JL Skinner ruled out for Week 4

Broncos safety JL Skinner (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Jets. Here’s the complete injury report.

Denver Broncos safety and special teams ace JL Skinner (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets after missing two straight weeks of practice.

Last week, Denver elevated safety Tanner McCalister from the practice squad to the game-day roster. With Skinner out again this week, McCalister might be a candidate for another elevation in Week 4.

Elsewhere on the injury report, tight end/fullback Nate Adkins (shoulder) and wide receiver Josh Reynolds (Achilles) are cleared to play.

Broncos injuries: JL Skinner held out of practice again

Broncos safety JL Skinner’s status for Sunday’s game against the Jets is in doubt after he was held out of practice again on Thursday.

Denver Broncos safety JL Skinner (ankle) missed practice again on Thursday, marking the fifth straight practice he has been held out dating back to last week. Barring a quick recovery turnaround, the safety seems unlikely to play against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Elsewhere on the injury report, tight end/fullback Nate Adkins (shoulder) was limited Thursday and wide receiver Josh Reynolds (Achilles) was upgraded to a full participant.

The Broncos elevated safety Tanner McCalister from the practice squad to the game-day roster when Skinner was ruled out last week. If Skinner is not able to play against the Jets, McCalister will likely be a candidate to get called up again in Week 4.

Rich Eisen says Bucs were ‘ready to stick it’ to Bo Nix

Bo Nix said last week the Broncos would try to get back on track against the Bucs. Tampa Bay’s defenders apparently took that personally.

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix continues to receive praise for his career game on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“There’s something about Bo Nix I like,” Rich Eisen said on Tuesday’s edition of The Rich Eisen Show.

Eisen said the Bucs had what they believed was bulletin board material from Nix’s comments last week.

I heard Nix saying, ‘If we just beat the Buccaneers, we can use it as a starting point.’ … I heard (what Nix said) did not sit well in Tampa. They were kind of ready to stick it to the rookie, and Sean Payton and Bo Nix hit them in the mouth to start and kept hitting ’em, and then knocked ’em out.”

In the game against the Bucs, Nix went 25-of-36 for 216 yards with no turnovers, adding nine rushes for 47 yards and a score, a far cry from the first two weeks of the season.

“The beat-up moments from the first two weeks lead to him having the fortitude to go on the road (and win),” Eisen said of the QB’s performance.

With the win, Denver improved to 1-2.

“Kudos to the Broncos, man,” Eisen said. “The first road win for a rookie quarterback (of the 2024 season) belongs to Bo Nix.”

Broncos LB Alex Singleton played 49 snaps after tearing ACL: ‘That’s pretty remarkable’

After tearing his ACL eight plays into the game, Broncos LB Alex Singleton played the remaining 49 snaps. “It just shows how tough he is.”

Eight plays into the Denver Broncos‘ 26-7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, linebacker Alex Singleton tore his ACL.

The ligament was torn during safety Brandon Jones’ interception return, but Singleton did not realize the severity of the injury. The 30-year-old linebacker went on to play all 49 remaining snaps on defense, leading the team with ten tackles, before reporting a sore knee.

“It was kind of remarkable [that he played through it],” coach Sean Payton said Wednesday. “Then he reported [that] he felt a little soreness. They looked at it, we looked at it some more, and then sure enough he’ll be scheduled for surgery probably about two weeks from now.”

It’s a clean tear, which is good news for Singleton’s recovery. Payton said the linebacker was just as surprised as everyone else when testing revealed a torn ACL, and he noted that it was unusual for a player to not feel symptoms for such an injury.

“He reported to the training room after the game,” Payton said. “[He had] some soreness. They did an exam. Then he went and had an MRI, and I think it was that evening at dinner, Sunday night, they came back with the results. He flew with us. [It’s] pretty typical for an ACL [tear] to have the procedure about two weeks give or take to let the swelling go down. Yeah, it was tough news.”

More than once, Payton referenced it as a remarkable situation.

“I’ve had players that have had ACL [tears], but I’ve never seen one in this fashion,” Payton said. “And I was able to look at the MRI. I’ve never seen one where he felt like he could have played another game that night. Now the next morning there was swelling, but that’s pretty remarkable.”

Singleton was one of just three Broncos defenders who played all 57 defensive snaps against the Bucs, joining defensive backs Pat Surtain and P.J. Locke. A team captain and signal-caller for the defense, Singleton will be hard to replace in Denver.

“That one’s tough,” quarterback Bo Nix said Wednesday. “Really tough. Alex is a great teammate. Alex is a great football player. He does a lot on the field for us. He’s one of those guys that when he’s on the field, everybody feels a lot better. It’s going to be tough. We’re going to have to definitely play big and play important roles around him.

“You can’t replace a guy like Alex, but I think you can rise up around him and help that loss out a little bit. [I’m] definitely pulling for him with his recovery. We hope he has a great offseason and gets ready to go again. [It’s a] huge loss for us, but we’re going to continue to get better around him and make sure that we have what it takes on defense. Then offensively, we always just have to raise up our game and play better.”

Nix commended Singleton for playing through the injury.

“If there’s probably a story or if I had to explain Alex in one thing, I would just point that one out,” Nix said. “He’s the type of guy that would tear his ACL on the sixth play of the game and go out there and finish the game. I don’t think anybody really even knew.

“I saw kind of it happen and kind of talked to him at half, but you would’ve never known. He didn’t say anything. It just shows how tough he is and shows how much of a leader he is. Whatever he can do for the team, he’s going to go out there and put his body on the line. It exemplifies what it means to be a captain, and that’s why he’s one of ours.”

The Broncos added depth at linebacker by signing veterans Zach Cunningham and Kwon Alexander to the practice squad on Wednesday. Levelle Bailey is also available on the practice squad. This week, Cody Barton will likely start next to one of Kristian Welch or Justin Strnad against the New York Jets.

Before being placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, Singleton had played 1,115 consecutive snaps on defense. He will now miss the remainder of the 2024 season, ending his 17-game streak of playing every snap. The veteran linebacker has one more year left on his contract after this season.

Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad with 2 new LBs

Here’s a look at the Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad following the addition of two linebackers.

The Denver Broncos have officially signed veteran linebackers Kwon Alexander and Zach Cunningham to the practice squad after losing Alex Singleton to a season-ending torn ACL.

Alexander (6-1, 227 pounds) joins the team as a 30-year-old veteran with 631 tackles, 34 pass breakups, 13.5 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and nine interceptions in 104 career games (88 starts). Denver will mark Alexander’s sixth stop in his 10-year career.

Cunningham (6-3, 238 pounds) has recorded 705 tackles, 23 pass breakups, 6.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and one interception in 86 career starts. The Broncos are his fourth team.

Denver had room to add Alexander to the practice squad after promoting wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey to the active roster last Saturday. The team had room for Cunningham after promoting running back Tyler Badie to the 53-man roster on Wednesday.

The 17-player practice squad and 53-man roster are now both full.

The NFL’s standard practice squad size limit is 16 players, but there’s an exception that allows an extra international player to not count against the limit. For Denver, Australian tight end Thomas Yassmin is an exception, giving the Broncos a 17-player practice squad.

So here’s the full list of 17 players on the squad after Wednesday’s move.

  1. WR Michael Bandy
  2. WR Kaden Davis
  3. WR David Sills
  4. TE Donald Parham

Recapping the 4 roster moves Broncos made Wednesday

The Broncos placed Alex Singleton on IR, promoted Tyler Badie to the active roster and signed Kwon Alexander and Zach Cunningham to the PS.

The Denver Broncos made a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday ahead of their Week 4 showdown with the New York Jets.

First, the Broncos placed inside linebacker Alex Singleton on injured reserve after he tore his ACL against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3. Singleton tore his ACL in the first quarter against the Bucs and played the rest of the game, not realizing the severity of his injury until later testing.

To fill the active roster spot formerly held by Singleton, Denver promoted running back Tyler Badie from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Badie figures to be more involved on offense going forward after impressing in Tampa on Sunday.

The Broncos filled Badie’s old spot on the practice squad by signing linebacker Zach Cunningham. Denver also signed linebacker Kwon Alexander to the practice squad (there was room for him following the promotion of wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey to the active roster).

Following those moves, the 17-player practice squad and 53-man roster are both full ahead of Sunday’s game in New Jersey.

Broncos roster moves

1. LB Alex Singleton placed on IR
2. RB Tyler Badie promoted to 53-man roster
3. LB Kwon Alexander signed to practice squad
4. LB Zach Cunningham signed to practice squad

Denver has been hit hard by injuries over the last two weeks, losing right tackle Mike McGlinchey (MCL), outside linebacker Baron Browning (foot) and Singleton to IR. McGlinchey and Browning will be eligible to return after four games. Singleton will miss the rest of the 2024 season.

Broncos injury news: One player held out of practice

Broncos DB JL Skinner (ankle) did not practice Wednesday. TE/FB Nate Adkins (shoulder) and WR Josh Reynolds (Achilles) were limited.

Denver Broncos safety JL Skinner (ankle) was held out of practice Wednesday. The safety also missed all of practice last week and did not play in Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Elsewhere on the injury report, tight end/fullback Nate Adkins (shoulder) and wide receiver Josh Reynolds (Achilles) were limited at practice.

The biggest injury news of the day was Denver placing linebacker Alex Singleton on injured reserve with a season-ending torn ACL. Because he has been moved off the 53-man roster to IR, Singleton does not appear on the injury report.

Broncos promote RB Tyler Badie to 53-man roster

The Broncos have promoted RB Tyler Badie from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

The Denver Broncos have promoted running back Tyler Badie from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, coach Sean Payton announced Wednesday.

Denver had room for Badie on the active roster after placing linebacker Alex Singleton on injured reserve with a season-ending torn ACL.

The Broncos now have four running backs on the 53-man roster as Badie joins Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and rookie Blake Watson. Badie was elevated from the practice squad for each of the last two games and Watson has been inactive for all three games this season.

Badie (5-8, 197 pounds) had one carry for 16 yards in Week 2 and nine carries for 70 yards in Week 3. After impressing on his limited touches, the 24-year-old running back figures to be more involved on offense going forward.

Badie was elevated in Week 2 after the team lost rookie running back Audric Estime to an ankle injury. The earliest Estime would be eligible to return to the active roster would be in Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
