Broncos QB Bo Nix nominated for weekly NFL award

Go vote for Broncos quarterback Bo Nix for the Rookie of the Week award!

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has received a nomination for the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week award on NFL.com for Week 7.

Nix, who helped the Broncos to a 33-10 victory over the New Orleans Saints last Thursday, has Denver rolling with a 4-3 record. In the win against New Orleans, Nix completed 16 of 26 attempts (61.5 percent) for 164 yards. Nix would also rush for 75 yards.

Due to his steady performance, he was nominated for Week 7’s Rookie of the Week award. He faces stiff competition from Drake Maye, Keon Coleman, and Brock Bowers. Will he win? Time will tell, but the honor is great nonetheless.

Nix and his Broncos will face off against the Carolina Panthers this week. A win will put the Broncos two games over .500 and may make them contenders for the playoff race. Congrats to Nix, though, for the nomination, as his play has helped steer the Broncos to a winning record.

Fans can vote for Nix on NFL.com/Rookies.

Saints make Alvin Kamara decision ahead of NFL trade deadline

Alvin Kamara isn’t going anywhere — the Saints gave the running back a two-year, $24.5 million contract extension.

Alvin Kamara isn’t going anywhere.

Two weeks before the NFL’s trade deadline, the New Orleans Saints reached an agreement on a two-year, $24.5 million extension with Kamara, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

After the Denver Broncos defeated the Saints 33-10 on Thursday Night Football last week, Kamara had a long embrace with his former coach, Sean Payton. That prompted speculation that Kamara wanted to be traded to the Broncos.

Kamara quickly shot down those rumors by declaring on social media that he did not ask for a trade. The 29-year-old running back also confirmed that he was negotiating a contract extension with his team.

Kamara clearly did not want to leave New Orleans and his extension “puts the 2017 third-round pick in position to retire a Saint,” according to Garafolo.

Kamara is now under contract with New Orleans through the 2026 season. He has totaled 10,738 yards from scrimmage and scored 84 touchdowns in 108 career games with the Saints.

Denver, meanwhile, will move forward with Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime at running back. The Broncos also have Blake Watson on the practice squad and Tyler Badie on injured reserve.

Panthers quarterback involved in car crash ahead of Broncos game

The Panthers said quarterback Andy Dalton is “being evaluated by team medical personnel” after he was involved in a car crash on Tuesday.

Story update: After Andy Dalton sprained his thumb in a car accident on Tuesday, the Panthers announced Wednesday that Bryce Young will start against the Broncos. See our original post below.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton and his family were involved in a car crash on Tuesday, the team confirmed.

“Andy Dalton and his family were involved in a car accident today in Charlotte,” the Panthers said in a statement. “Neither Dalton nor his family were transported by emergency medical personnel. Dalton is being evaluated by team medical personnel.”

Dalton, 36, was driving with his wife, three children and the family dog when the accident occurred. It sounds like none of them suffered serious injuries.

Dalton and the Panthers are set to travel to Colorado to face the Denver Broncos in Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season on Sunday. Carolina coach Dave Canales reiterated on Monday that Dalton, not Bryce Young, will start against the Broncos. That was before Tuesday’s accident.

The Panthers are set to have their first practice of the week on Wednesday and Dalton’s status will be a key storyline leading up to Sunday.

Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad after roster moves

Here’s a look at the Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad following a flurry of roster moves last week.

The Denver Broncos made a flurry of roster moves last week, including multiple changes to the practice squad.

The Broncos cut defensive back Tanner McCalister and running back Blake Watson from the active roster and signed them to the practice squad. To make room for McCalister and Watson, Denver cut center Dieter Eiselen and receiver Kaden Davis from the practice squad.

Following those transactions, the practice squad is full.

The NFL’s standard practice squad size limit is 16 players, but there’s an exception that allows an extra international player to not count against the limit. For Denver, Australian tight end Thomas Yassmin is an exception, giving the Broncos a 17-player practice squad.

So here’s the full list of 17 players on the squad after the recent moves.

Broncos 17-player practice squad

  1. RB Blake Watson
  2. WR Michael Bandy
  3. WR David Sills
  4. WR A.T. Perry
  5. TE Donald Parham
  6. TE Thomas Yassmin
  7. OT Cam Fleming
  8. OL Nick Garguilo
  9. OL Calvin Throckmorton

  12. OLB Andrew Farmer
  13. LB Kwon Alexander
  14. LB Zach Cunningham (pictured)

Two players can be elevated from the practice squad each week.

Broncos could have a few players return from injuries this week

Broncos CB Pat Surtain will be two weeks removed from his concussion when Denver hosts the Panthers in Week 8.

The Denver Broncos could get reinforcements on the injury front this week following their mini bye after playing on Thursday Night Football in Week 7.

The biggest name to watch will be cornerback Pat Surtain, who suffered a concussion against the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 13 and wasn’t cleared in time to play against the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 17.

The Broncos will be a full two weeks removed from when Surtain suffered the injury when they host the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 27 in Week 8, so the cornerback presumably has a good chance to return in time for that game.

Elsewhere on the injury front, right tackle Alex Palczewski (ankle) will be three weeks removed from his initial injury when the Broncos take on the Panthers. There’s no rush to get Palczewski back on the field because Mike McGlinchey is now healthy again, but Denver’s offensive line will get a nice depth boost when “Palco” is cleared to play again.

Next week, Broncos running back running back Tyler Badie (back) will be eligible to return from injury reserve, and center Luke Wattenberg (ankle) and wide receiver Josh Reynolds (hand) can return in Week 10.

Broncos officially sign running back to practice squad

The Broncos officially signed running back Blake Watson to their practice squad on Saturday after he cleared waivers on Friday.

The Denver Broncos officially signed running back Blake Watson to their practice squad on Saturday, the team announced.

When three players returned from injured reserve ahead of Thursday Night Football, the Broncos needed to create space on the active roster. One of the players Denver cut to make room was Watson. The running back then cleared waivers on Friday and officially re-signed on the practice squad on Saturday.

To make room for Watson on the practice squad, the team cut center Dieter Eiselen.

Watson (5-9, 195 pounds) originally signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis this spring. He led the team in preseason with 26 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 41 yards.

Watson was active for just one regular season game this year when Audric Estime and Tyler Badie were both on IR. Estime has since returned and Badie will be eligible to return from IR in Week 9.

For now, Watson will serve as the fourth-string running back from the practice squad. He’ll likely be bumped to RB5 when Badie returns.

Saints RB Alvin Kamara responds to Broncos trade rumors

Alvin Kamara tweeted on Saturday that he has not asked the Saints for a trade, debunking inaccurate reports.

Story update: Alvin Kamara agreed to a two-year, $24.5 million extension with the Saints on Oct. 22. He’s staying put in New Orleans.

After the Denver Broncos defeated the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football, Saints running back Alvin Kamara had a long embrace with Broncos coach Sean Payton.

Kamara’s embrace with his former coach and ensuing (inaudible) exchange quickly led many fans and pundits to speculate that the running back asked Payton to trade for him ahead of the NFL trade deadline.

Following that speculation, false “reports” soon emerged that Kamara had officially requested a trade from New Orleans. The running back took to social media on Saturday to shoot down those inaccurate reports.

“Incorrect..” Kamara tweeted in response to a since-deleted tweet that said the running back was seeking a trade.

In a follow-up tweet, Kamara said, “I ain request a trade.. so that’s a lie.”

Not only is the running back not seeking a trade, he hopes to extend his deal with the Saints. Kamara has already started negotiations with New Orleans on a potential contract extension.

Kamara’s connection to Payton makes him a player to watch leading up to the trade deadline (Nov. 5), but the running back has made it clear he has not asked for a trade.

Broncos cut offensive lineman from practice squad

The Broncos cut center Dieter Eiselen from the practice squad on Saturday.

The Denver Broncos released center Dieter Eiselen from their practice squad on Saturday, the team announced.

Eiselen (6-4, 300 pounds) just signed with the club last week after the team lost starting center Luke Wattenberg to an ankle injury. Denver still has Calvin Throckmorton and Nick Gargiulo providing depth from the practice squad as swing guard/center backups.

The Broncos cut Eiselen to make room for running back Blake Watson on the practice squad. Denver cut Watson from the active roster on Thursday and he returned on the practice squad after clearing waivers.

The Broncos currently have one true center (Alex Forsyth) and three running backs (Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime) on the 53-man roster. Wattenberg (center) and Tyler Badie (running back) will be eligible to return from IR later this season.

In the meantime, Throckmorton and Gargiulo will provide depth at center and Watson will provide running back from the practice squad.

Ex-NFL QB Jay Cutler arrested for DUI and 3 other charges

Jay Cutler was arrested in Tennessee on Thursday, charged with DUI and three other offenses.

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested on four charges in Franklin, Tennessee on Thursday, according to a report from TMZ (via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk).

Cutler is accused of “failure to exercise due care, violation of implied consent law, and possession of a handgun while under the influence,” according to TMZ.

Cutler, 41, was booked and jailed before posting a $5,000 bond.

Cutler was a first-round draft pick by the Broncos in the 2006 NFL draft, where he played for three years before being traded to the Chicago Bears, where he spent the bulk of his career. After eight years in Chicago, Cutler spent the 2017 season with the Miami Dolphins before retiring.

Cutler went 3,048-of-4,920 passing for 35,133 yards with 227 touchdowns and 167 interceptions in his 12-year career.

Cuter never played in a Super Bowl, getting only as far as the NFC divisional game against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. He did lead the NFL in interceptions twice during his career.
