Giants worked out Jake Fromm, AJ McCarron and 6 others

The New York Giants worked out eight players over the past two days, including quarterbacks Jake Fromm and AJ McCarron.

From Monday afternoon into Tuesday afternoon, the New York Giants held a series of workouts and visits. Among those in attendance was the team’s former safety, Landon Collins.

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was also in town, although he was not visiting on any official NFL business.

With Daniel Jones (ankle) and Tyrod Taylor (concussion) both injured, the Giants also hosted a slew of quarterbacks on a tryout basis, just as head coach Brian Daboll said they would.

The group, led by ex-Giant Jake Fromm, also included former Alabama standout AJ McCarron and another former Giant, Brian Lewerke.

Fromm famously took over for an injured Jones and veteran Mike Glennon last season in a game that saw him run back-to-back quarterback sneaks to clear room for the punter. That decision ultimately cost head coach Joe Judge his job.

But Fromm does have familiarity with both general manager Joe Schoen and the aforementioned Daboll from their time in Buffalo. Lewerke was also in East Rutherford when that duo took over earlier this year, but was ultimately waived in mid-May.

In addition to the quarterbacks, the Giants also had wide receivers Victor Bolden and Jontre Kirklin, guard Solomon Kindley, and linebacker Ulysees Gilbert in for workouts.

None of the players were immediately signed to a contract but that may change on Wednesday. The Giants may also circle back on Collins once their forced roster shuffling comes to an end.

See it: Giants GM Joe Schoen playing QB at rookie minicamp

Watch New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen fill in at quarterback and toss some passes at rookie minicamp.

The New York Giants hit the field for their first rookie minicamp practice on Friday but had just one quarterback on their roster of 80-plus players: Brian Lewerke.

That obviously presents a problem — even during a light practice — when drills are taking place on separate ends of the field.

The solution? The Giants fell back on a former college quarterback who just so happens to be their first-year general manager.

Joe Schoen? Come on down.

Schoen’s spiral left a bit to be desired, but not all of the reviews were terrible. Of course, not all were positive, either.

The rookies and veteran tryout players undoubtedly got a kick out of Schoen throwing passes. It shows that the attitude around East Rutherford is far more relaxed these days and gives hope for a brighter future ahead.

New York Giants: 2022 reserve/futures contract scorecard

The New York Giants have begun signing players to reserve/futures contracts, so use the Giants Wire tracker to stay up to date.

The New York Giants are now officially in offseason mode and that means it’s time to begin signing players to reserve/futures contracts.

Even without the presence of general manager Dave Gettleman, who announced his retirement on Monday, the team will press forward with personnel moves. Assistant general manager Kevin Abrams is likely handling the heavy lifting.

The Giants announced their first eight signings on Monday afternoon.

  • LB Omari Cobb
  • OT Devery Hamilton
  • LB Trent Harris
  • TE Jake Hausmann
  • DE Niko Lalos
  • QB Brian Lewerke
  • DT David Moa
  • WR Travis Toivonen

Additional signings in the coming days are likely and we’ll update this scorecard as moves are made.

Giants release Isaiah Wilson from practice squad, waive Chris Myarick

The New York Giants have terminated the practice squad contract of OL Isaiah Wilson and waived TE Chris Myarick, among other moves.

Isaiah Wilson’s tenure with the New York Giants has come to an end.

On Tuesday, the Giants officially announced that Wilson has been released from the practice squad in a series of transactions.

Even with all of the Giants’ offensive line struggles, Wilson was never able to earn a chance to start and show the team what he was capable of being.

Wilson was a former 2020 first rounder of the Tennessee Titans, but he was traded to the Miami Dolphins after he was seen as a malcontent who couldn’t follow rules. The same issues persisted in Miami and he was released in short order.

Following his release from the Giants, who knows if Wilson will get another shot in the NFL.

In a separate move, the Giants also waived tight end Chris Myarick, who had scored a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles earlier in the season.

Myarick could pop back up on the Giants’ practice squad if he goes unclaimed.

Meanwhile, the Giants also placed offensive tackle Matt Peart, who was already on injured reserve, on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Finally, the Giants protected four practice squad players in Week 18. They were quarterback Brian Lewerke, linebacker Omari Cobb, defensive tackle David Moa and defensive back Natrell Jamerson.

Giants’ Mike Glennon out in Week 18 with wrist injury

New York Giants QB Mike Glennon suffered a wrist injury on Sunday that will require surgery, forcing him to miss a Week 18 game vs. the WFT.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

New York Giants quarterback Mike Glennon suffered a wrist injury in Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears and will miss the season finale against Washington at MetLife Stadium.

Head coach Joe Judge revealed the injury during his Monday presser burying the lede a bit.

“I’m really pleased with the way Mike has come to work every day this year. He’s played through a number of things, he got thrown into a different role. I like the way Mike prepares, the way he’s a team player. Obviously, there have been some times this year he’s been up and down,” Judge said.

“We started Jake (Fromm) a week ago over him. I thought he handled that the right way as a professional, put the team first and then he stayed ready and when his number was called and went back in. I’m pleased with what Mike’s done for the team and how hard he works.”

Then Judge finally dropped the hammer.

“It’s a shame, Mike got hurt in the game yesterday. He’s going to have surgery coming up soon and he won’t be available for the game this week. That’s really the one injury of note,” Judge said. “There’s a lot of other bumps and bruises in there. I know Mike wanted to go out there yesterday and compete and do everything he could for the team, and that’s the way his season will end.”

Giant fans won’t miss Glennon too much. He completed just four passes in 11 attempts for 24 yards on Sunday in what was one of the worst performances by a quarterback in recent memory.

In Glennon’s absence, the Giants will likely turn to Jake Fromm. However, Judge said that practice squad quarterback Brian Lewerke will get some looks in practice this week.

Giants protect QB Brian Lewerke, three others

The New York Giants have protected quarterback Brian Lewerke and three other members of the practice squad in Week 6.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The New York Giants announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 6 game with the Los Angeles Rams and, to the surprise of no one, quarterback Brian Lewerke was one of the four.

The 24-year-old Lewerke, who was originally signed in mid-August, is an important piece for the Giants this week.

Starting quarterback Daniel Jones is likely to miss Sunday’s game with a concussion and Mike Glennon is the only other quarterback on the active roster. In the event Jones is inactive, Lewerke will be elevated on gameday and serve as QB2. Punter Riley Dixon will serve as the emergency QB3.

In addition to Lewerke, the Giants also protected offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, defensive tackle David Moa and wide receiver Dante Pettis.

Pettis was a second-time addition to the protection list a week ago, while Cunningham and Moa had all been protected previously. For Cunningham, he has now been protected four weeks in a row. Moa has been protected in all six weeks this season.

Given the Giants’ injuries at wide receiver, it’s likely that Pettis will join Lewerke as a gameday elevation.

Brian Lewerke stayed patient this summer, and that patience will now payoff with a gig in the NFL. On Thursday, the New York Giants announced that Lewerke will be joining their practice league squad.

Lewerke played with the Giants during preseason but was waived this week and reportedly planning to be an emergency quarterback for the team, so this is a welcome development for Lewerke as he looks to hang around the league until he has the chance to contribute on a 53-man roster.
