Pros and cons of every OC candidate Saints have interviewed

Breaking down the pros and cons of every offensive coordinator candidate the New Orleans Saints have interviewed:

The writing was on the wall for Pete Carmichael following the New Orleans Saints’ 2023 season. He was let go after 14 years as the team’s offensive coordinator and the Saints will need to replace him. They’ve already done a number of interviews, but a few coaches have already been hired away.

Carmichael was a nice coach under Payton, but really lacked the ability to run the offense without him. As Dennis Allen is a defensive head coach, whoever the Saints hire will have to carry the load of the offense.

Here are the pros and cons to every offensive coordinator candidate the Saints have interviewed so far (that is still available):

Eagles part ways with Quarterbacks Coach Alex Tanney

Philadelphia Eagles part ways with Quarterbacks Coach Alex Tanney

The Eagles are restructuring their offensive coaching staff, and days after firing Brian Johnson as offensive coordinator, the team is parting ways with Quarterbacks Coach, Alex Tanney.

Tanney was named the Eagles’ assistant quarterbacks coach/offensive assistant during the 2022 offseason, before being promoted to Quarterbacks Coach last offseason.

A former NFL quarterback, Tanney initially joined the team as an offensive quality control coach in 2021 after returning from his nine-year playing career (2012-20).

Former Eagles assistant coach Brian Johnson to interview for Buccaneers OC job

Former Philadelphia Eagles offensive assistant Brian Johnson to interview for Browns offensive coordinator job

Reports suggest that Brian Johnson would land on his feet in another system, and the first-year offensive coordinator is heading to Tampa to interview for their vacant position, according to Jonathan Jones.

The Buccaneers have a vacancy after rising star Dave Canales accepted the Carolina Panthers head coaching job.

Johnson, 36, took over as Eagles offensive coordinator this year after spending two seasons under Shane Steichen as quarterbacks coach, helping the Eagles reach the Super Bowl after last season.

Johnson was promoted after Steichen landed the Colts heading coaching job, but he came under fire after the Philadelphia offense grew “stale’ while regressing this season.

Saints schedule interview with ex-Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson

The Saints have scheduled an interview with ex-Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson for the same position:

Here’s another name for the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator search: Brian Johnson. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini first reported that the Saints scheduled an interview with Johnson for their offensive coordinator vacancy on Monday; Johnson held the same position this season with the Philadelphia Eagles, his first as a play caller in the NFL.

Johnson, who turns 37 in February, faced criticism throughout the season but he managed an effective run-first offense. The Eagles ranked 11th in yards per carry and leaned hard on running back D’Andre Swift, who had his first 1,000-yard season in the NFL. Star receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith each finished with 80-plus receptions and 1,000-plus receiving yards. Quarterback Jalen Hurts threw a career-high 15 interceptions but otherwise maintained his production as a passer while being asked to make fewer plays with his legs as a rusher, though he still had 15 rushing touchdowns.

A well-established member of the Eagles coaching staff (before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023, Johnson worked closely with Hurts as Philadelphia’s quarterbacks coach in 2021 and 2022), Johnson spent most of his career at the college level. He previously worked as an offensive coordinator at Utah, Houston, and Florida with other stops as a quarterbacks coach at Mississippi State.

Browns interviewing former Eagles OC Brian Johnson for same role

Another offensive coordinator sits down with the Browns…

Just let go by the Philadelphia Eagles, Brian Johnson will speak to the Cleveland Browns about their offensive coordinator vacancy.

Cleveland dot com’s Mary Kay Cabot was the first to report that Johnson will be in Cleveland to sit down with head coach Kevin Stefanski and company. Johnson took over as the play-caller and offensive coordinator of the Eagles this year after Shane Steichen departed for the Indianapolis Colts.

The efficiency in Cleveland dropped off drastically from Steichen to Johnson, however, as the Eagles’ offense fell to a middle-of-the-road unit in Expected Points Added per play during their end-of-season collapse starting in Week 13.

Johnson joins Ken Dorsey, Andy Dickerson, and Jerrod Johnson on the list of candidates the Browns have interviewed for their opening. With four teams still playing football as well, the Browns could continue to hold out until after the Super Bowl in case there are candidates like Klint Kubiak of the San Francisco 49ers they want to bring in for an interview.

Having proximity to Steichen, one of the elite play-callers in the NFL, could be an attractive quality to Johnson that the Browns are interested in picking further. With no timetable for a hire, the search for a new offensive coordinator ticks on.

Eagles: 11 takeaways from Howie Roseman, Nick Sirianni’s end-of-season press conference

We’re looking at 11 key takeaways from the Eagles end of the season press conference with Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni

The Eagles held their annual season-ending press conferences.

Unlike the 2023 version, we’ll head into the offseason with uncertainty about the team’s identity, coaching staff, and direction on both sides of the football.

Brian Johnson and Sean Desai are out, while there are 20 pending free agents, but other than that, Philadelphia will enter the 2024 offseason with front-office continuity, draft assets, and a clear plan for improving around Jalen Hurts.

Here are 11 takeaways and notes from the presser.

Eagles interviewed Texans QB coach Jerrod Johnson for vacant OC job

The Philadelphia Eagles have interviewed Houston Texans QB coach Jerrod Johnson for vacant OC job

Hiring his QB coach could be the next best thing if you can’t add Bobby Slowik to your coaching staff.

After firing Brian Johnson, the Eagles are holding offensive coordinator interviews, and Texans quarterback coach Jerrod Johnson is next on the list.

The 35-year-old Johnson has just four years of NFL coaching experience and no experience calling plays, but he is considered a rising star in the coaching ranks.

Under his direction, Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud put together one of the greatest seasons ever by a first-year signal caller, throwing for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns against five interceptions in 15 games.

Stroud led the NFL in passing yards per game (273.9).

Before joining the Texans as their quarterbacks coach last spring, Johnson spent one year in the same role for the Minnesota Vikings.

During that one season, Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins made the Pro Bowl after throwing for 4,547 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Johnson is a Texas A&M graduate and was an All-Big 12 performer with the Aggies, throwing for 8,011 yards and 67 touchdowns in his collegiate career.

Eagles interviewed Kliff Kingsbury for vacant offensive coordinator job

Philadelphia Eagles interviewed Kliff Kingsbury for vacant offensive coordinator job

Kliff Kingsbury made an initial list of 10 candidates who would be good fits for the Eagles offensive coordinator position, and the former Arizona Cardinals head coach landed an interview.

Mike Garafalo said the USC offensive coordinator had a virtual job interview with the NFC East squad.

Kingsbury could bring head coaching experience and offensive genius to Sirianni’s staff.

He led the Arizona Cardinals for four years (2019-22) and Texas Tech for six years (2013-18), helping to develop Patrick Mahomes and Kyler Murray at critical points in their careers.

During Murray’s third season in the NFL, the former Sooners star ranked second in completion percentage, seventh in QBR, eighth in passer rating and passing yards per game, and 11th in adjusted net yards per attempt.

The Cardinals were 11-6 that season.

7 biggest questions facing the Eagles in 2024

We’re looking at the seven biggest questions facing the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024

The Eagles started their NFL offseason much earlier than expected.

As head coach Nick Sirianni and general manager Howie Roseman prepare for their end-of-year press conferences on Wednesday, plenty of questions must be answered ahead of free agency, the draft, and training camp this summer.

Philadelphia went 1-6 in their final seven games, so the more immediate discussions will center around offensive and defensive coordinator candidates, along with a synopsis of where the breakdown in communication on defense began.

Other questions will focus on Jalen Hurts and his continued development, A.J. Brown’s temperament, DeVonta Smith’s contract, and the future of veterans like Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham.

With activities around the NovaCare Complex set to ramp up, here are seven questions facing the Eagles in 2024.
