Rams hire former Eagles DC Sean Desai as a senior defensive assistant

The Los Angeles Rams are hiring Sean Desai as a senior defensive assistant after being fired by the Philadelphia Eagles

Sean Desai is headed west after losing his job with the Eagles, landing on Sean McVay’s Rams staff as a senior defensive assistant.

Chris Shula replaced the departed Raheem Morris, who landed the Atlanta Falcons head coaching job, and he’s bringing in Desai for a critical role.

One of Desai’s best performances as a defensive coordinator came in Week 5 against the Rams when Philadelphia’s defense sacked quarterback Matthew Stafford four times and held the Los Angeles Rams to under 60 yards rushing.

All-Pro pass rusher Haason Reddick logged two tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, and 2 QB hits in the win.

Eagles to interview former Jaguars DC Mike Caldwell for LB coach position

The Philadelphia Eagles are interviewing former Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Caldwell for their vacant defensive coordinator job

The Eagles are set to meet with a familiar name, as former Jaguars assistant coach Mike Caldwell will interview for the vacant linebackers coach job in Philadelphia.

Caldwell was relieved of his duties by Doug Pederson following the late-season collapse in Jacksonville, and interveiwed for the defensive coordinator job before reportedly hiring Vic Fangio to the job.

The Jaguars lost five of their last six, going from 8-3 to finishing their season at 9-8 a year after winning the AFC South title.

Caldwell’s dismissal comes after the defense allowed 28 or more points in four of those five defeats, including the season-ending 28-20 loss to the last-place Tennessee Titans.

Jacksonville’s defense finished 17th overall in points allowed, 22nd in total defense, 26th in yards allowed and 25th in scoring.

Caldwell, 52, was the defensive coordinator for two years under Doug Pederson Caldwell, following stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, and Eagles.

Caldwell was drafted by Bill Belichick and Nick Saban with the Browns, spending three years with the Browns before joining the Ravens. From 1998 to 2001, he played with the Philadelphia Eagles, accumulating 221 tackles with 5 Sacks and 3 INTs.

7 biggest questions facing the Eagles in 2024

We’re looking at the seven biggest questions facing the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024

The Eagles started their NFL offseason much earlier than expected.

As head coach Nick Sirianni and general manager Howie Roseman prepare for their end-of-year press conferences on Wednesday, plenty of questions must be answered ahead of free agency, the draft, and training camp this summer.

Philadelphia went 1-6 in their final seven games, so the more immediate discussions will center around offensive and defensive coordinator candidates, along with a synopsis of where the breakdown in communication on defense began.

Other questions will focus on Jalen Hurts and his continued development, A.J. Brown’s temperament, DeVonta Smith’s contract, and the future of veterans like Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham.

With activities around the NovaCare Complex set to ramp up, here are seven questions facing the Eagles in 2024.

Eagles to interview Ron Rivera for vacant defensive coordinator position

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to interview former Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera for their vacant defensive coordinator position

Ron Rivera has had recent success in slowing down the Philadelphia offense.

After being fired by Washington, the long-time coach will interview for the Eagles’ vacant defensive coordinator job.

After being relieved of his duties in Washington, Rivera told reporters that it would not be difficult to return to being a defensive coordinator again after spending years as the top guy. He last served as a coordinator with the Chargers from 2008 to ’10 before taking over as the Panthers’ head coach.

He also was the Chargers’ linebackers coach in 2007 — after serving as the Bears’ defensive coordinator the previous three seasons.

The Commanders Wire recently looked at Rivera’s previous success during his seven seasons as a coordinator.

  • 2004: No. 12 total defense, No. 13 scoring defense
  • 2005: No. 2 total defense, No. 1 scoring defense
  • 2006: No. 5 total defense, No. 3 scoring defense
  • 2007: No. 14 total defense, No. 5 scoring defense (DC for part of the season after Chargers fired Ted Cottrell)
  • 2008: No. 25 total defense, No. 15 scoring defense
  • 2009: No. 16 total defense, No. 11 scoring defense
  • 2010: No. 1 total defense, No. 10 scoring defense

Rivera has been a head coach for 13 years, compiling a 102-103-2 record. He was 26-40-1 in Washington, including 4-13 this past season. Washington won the NFC East in his first season but did not finish with a winning record during his four years.

Matt Patricia to explore other coaching options after contract expires with Eagles

Matt Patricia will explore other coaching options after departing the Philadelphia Eagles

After firing Sean Desai, the Eagles will part ways with defensive assistant Matt Patricia, as the veteran coach will explore other options.

Desai was relieved of his play-calling duties on Dec. 17, as head coach Nick Sirianni entrusted the Eagles’ defense to Patricia ahead of their Week 15 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Philadelphia’s defensive struggles continued under Patricia as the unit’s play worsened, leading Darius Slay to simultaneously compare the situation to being in two marriages.

The Eagles surrendered 24.7 points per game under Desai, 27.8 under Patricia, 358.8 yards per game under Desai, and 327.2 under Patricia.

Eagles fire defensive coordinator Sean Desai

The Philadelphia Eagles have fired defensive coordiantor Sean Desai

According to Ian Rapoport, the Eagles have fired defensive coordinator Sean Desai, who reports that the embattled defensive coordinator could have options around the league.

Desai was stripped of playcalling duties before Week 15, and the move comes after Philadelphia finished their second-half collapse with a 32-9 loss to the Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Monday night.

The Eagles finished the season with six losses in their last seven games, with those losses by an average of 15 points, and their only win since Week 12 came against the Giants after they nearly blew a 17-point lead.

According to Reuben Frank, the 32-9 loss was the 2nd-biggest in franchise history and largest since a 24-loss to the Cowboys in a conference semifinal at Texas Stadium in 1992.

Philadelphia will now take steps to overhaul the unit and hire a defensive coordinator who can pressure the opposing quarterback while preventing big plays on the back end.
