Eagles announce 2 roster moves in advance of Week 9 matchup vs. Chargers

Philadelphia Eagles announce 2 roster moves in advance of Week 9 matchup vs. Chargers

The Eagles announced two more roster moves on Thursday morning.

Philadelphia signed Brett Toth to the practice squad after he went unclaimed on waivers Tuesday afternoon.

Toth was waived to make room for defensive back Kary Vincent Jr., who was acquired from the Broncos in a trade at the deadline.

Toth saw action in seven of the Eagles’ first eight games this season.

Toth originally joined the Eagles as a rookie free agent out of Army in 2019 after the U.S. Department of Defense granted him a waiver to pursue his NFL career.

To make room on the practice squad, the Eagles released cornerback Craig James.

The Eagles are in the process of cutting the roster down to 53 players and lost amid the waiver process is a potential trade or two.

During a Monday night discussion centered around potential roster moves, Mike Kaye of NJ Advance Media reported that both the Jets and Patriots have shown interest in Philadelphia’s offensive line depth.

Kaye’s report comes amid a Monday Morning Quarterback report centered around teams around the league showing interest in the Eagles’ depth within the trenches.

The Eagles are another team taking calls on offensive linemen—their issues of the last few years staying healthy up front have actually created a situation where they have experienced backups. Philly’s also discussed dealing away some linebacker depth.

With the deadline just hours away, here are seven Eagles who could potentially be moved.

After a terrible rainstorm ensured that the starters wouldn’t see time at key positions, the Eagles closed out the preseason with a 31-31 tie against the Jets on Friday night.

It was a huge night for players on the roster bubble and we’ve listed the guys who helped their cause the most.

The Eagles are in Florence, New Jersey this week for two joint practice sessions and a Friday night preseason matchup with the Jets.

With Philadelphia taking a similar approach to last week and placing the onus on performing well during those practices, we’re listed 15 players who need a strong week altogether.

Philadelphia Eagles claim OT Brett Toth off of waivers from the Arizona Cardinals

A familiar name is back with the Philadelphia Eagles as the Birds put in a waiver claim on former Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle, Brett Toth. Toth was waived from injured reserve by the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cardinals waived Toth (undisclosed) from injured reserve Tuesday after agreeing to an injury settlement and becoming a free agent.

Toth is a second lieutenant in the United States Army and was granted a special waiver allowing him to sign a three-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cardinals release WR Hakeem Butler, others on eve of final cuts

Last year’s fourth-round pick is let go even before the final day to make roster moves.

The Arizona Cardinals entered the day with 74 players on their roster and have until Saturday afternoon to get get it down to 53. They announced five moves on Friday to get the roster down to 69 players.

They released four players outright, including last year’s fourth-round pick, receiver Hakeem Butler.

Getting released along with Butler were offensive lineman Sam Jones, defensive lineman Miles Brown and punter Ryan Winslow.

Offensive lineman Brett Toth was waived/injured. He has an issue with a hamstring. If he clears waivers, he will revert to injured reserve.

Butler is the most prominent player to get cut. Brown was the only undrafted rookie to make the team last season, but when the Cardinals signed Jordan Phillips and drafted Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence, it was going to be hard for him to make the team.

Jones and Winslow never really had a shot at the roster.

That leaves 16 cuts the Cardinals will need to make by Saturday at 1 p.m. Arizona time.

After final cuts are made, they will be able to assemble a 16-player practice squad.

At least 3 Cardinals did not practice on Thursday

Christian Kirk, J.R. Sweezy and Brett Toth were not seen practicing during the open part of practice.

The Arizona Cardinals practiced for the fifth consecutive day but did not go with full pads on Thursday in training camp. Based on what media members in attendance were able to ee during the open portion of practice, three players did not participate.

After five players did not practice on Wednesday, four of whom appeared to simply get the day off, the three not seen participating are different.

On Thursday, they appeared to be without receiver Christian Kirk and offensive linemen J.R. Sweezy and Brett Toth.

Of the three, Sweezy is most likely to have been given a day off. With Kirk, who is in his third year, and Toth, who has yet to play an NFL game, that might not be the case.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury did not speak to reporters after Thursday’s practice, so no one was able to confirm their status.

The Cardinals will practice on Friday before taking Saturday off.

Cardinals OL Brett Toth pulling double duty with Army commitment

He works at ASU’s Army ROTC program when he isn’t doing football work for the Cardinals.

Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Brett Toth has a unique story. He was claimed by the Cardinals off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles and maintains two careers. One is that of an NFL player trying to make the roster.

He also has a commitment with the U.S. Army.

He initially committed to five years of active dirty with the Army but was given an exception as President Trump announced those wanting to play professional sports could do so and have their commitment reduced to two years.

According to ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss, who spent a day with him back in March, Toth is an instructor at Arizona State University’s Army ROTC program.

Toth must spend five days a week in the offseason and Tuesdays during the regular season (when players have the day off), he works at ASU.

His two-year commitment expired May 23 but he extended that back out to the original five-year commitment.

Toth spent most of last season on the non-football injury list but was activated just prior to the end of the season so the coaches could evaluate him for the future.

He will battle for a roster spot as a backup on the offensive line in 2020.

Cardinals have multiple lower-cost options available on roster for RT job in 2020

Five players currently on the roster could be in the mix. Some will be free agents but could be re-signed and it won’t cost much.

Believe it or not, the Arizona Cardinals were pleased with the play of their offensive line in 2019. Yes, they allowed 50 sacks but multiple metrics show they were a solid unit. One is the fact they were a top-10 rushing offense and No. 2 in the league in yards per attempt. They also rank highly as a unit in a key pass-blocking metric.

It is known the team would like to re-sign left tackle D.J. Humphries and center A.Q. Shipley. Their starting guards of Justin Pugh and J.R. Sweezy are under contract for 2020.

The one position they viably could address is right tackle. It was the one position there were questions about. They could address the position in free agency but they don’t necessarily have to go out and be big spenders. They have multiple players they could bring back for the job in 2020.

None will cost much.

Marcus Gilbert

Cardinals Training Camp

Gilbert is the most talented of the group by far. However, he never played a down, tearing his ACL in practice before the first game. He will be an unrestricted free agent. The Cardinals could re-sign him and because of his age and injury history, he won’t command much money. However, it would be foolish for the Cardinals to just count on him to be the starter.

Cardinals use second return from injury designation on OL Brett Toth

He gets to practice with the team for the final three weeks of the season.

A minor note this week with the Arizona Cardinals clarified a potential return of injured cornerback Robert Alford. The Cardinals used their second injury designation for return on offensive lineman Brett Toth.

Toth had been on the non-football illness list since cornerback Patrick Peterson was reinstated from his six-game suspension.

Because they designated Toth to return and previously did so with offensive lineman Jordan Mills, it means Alford, who broke his leg in training camp, is done for the season and cannot return.

The move meant Toth could return to practice. It allows the Cardinals to evaluate him before the season ends and decide if he has a place in their future.

Teams typically must reinstate a player designated to return within 21 days. Because there are fewer than 21 days left in the Cardinals’ season, Toth will not have to be reinstated before the season ends.
