‘I think it will be a real strength’ Texas A&M’s cornerback room is taking shape

Texas A&M’s cornerback room is loaded, led by former Alabama CB Dezz Ricks who has looked the part during fall camp

As Texas A&M’s fall practice period enters its final stages before the Aggies prepare for the 2024 season opener vs. Notre Dame, head coach Mike Elko, alongside offensive coordinator Collin Klein and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, spoke to the local media after the program’s 14th fall practice on Saturday.

Ahead of the team’s final fall scrimmage on Sunday, Bateman, who has received praise for his coaching tactics from multiple players, discussed the immense progress made by A&M’s cornerback room, which features five new veterans from the transfer portal, including former Alabama CB Dezz Ricks.

Ricks, a 5-star prospect out of the prestigious IMG Academy in the 2023 recruiting class, left Tuscaloosa after one season, knowing that joining two of the best defensive minds in Collge Station was the right move for his playing career. According to Bateman, Ricks has consistently stood out this month, as his elite traits have shown up throughout the fall period.

“Dezz (Ricks), we have been really impressed with… Every practice he continued to impress, and he is really talented.”

“That corner room is really competitive, and I think it will be a real strength.”

Reading the term “strength” being associated with Texas A&M’s cornerback rotation is certainly a positive change of pace compared to last season’s ugly results. Senior corner Tyreek Chappell also noted that with the added depth, speed, and length at the outside corner and nickel, this unit has plenty of juice to be formidable and match up against any offense.

“A shutdown, lockdown secondary… I believe we can be the best defense in the league this year.”

No. 20-ranked Texas A&M will host No. 7-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on ABC.

The rest of the 2023 class, including 5-star DT David Hicks Jr. have made it College Station

As of Monday, several high-profile members of the 2023 recruiting class have made it to College Station.

We are nearly three months away from the start of the 2023 season, and to add a little more excitement to what we in the sports writing world call the “summer lull,” the rest of Texas A&M’s roster, including several key members of the 2023 recruiting class has made it to campus as of Monday, May 29.

Headlining this group is five-star defensive tackle David Hicks Jr., who recently competed in the UIL Track & Field Championship, earning a bronze medal in the discus event with a recorded throw of 182′-6″. As an incoming member of one of the most talented and deepest defensive line units in the country, Hicks, who is reportedly up to 280 pounds, provides versatility also to see time at the defensive end spot and will undoubtedly compete for snaps as soon as fall camp arrives.

The rest of the list in the 2023 cycle includes the following players:

  • Four-star Quarterback Marcel Reed (2,198 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, 944 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns in 2022)
  • Four-star defensive end Rylan Kennedy (61 tackles, 10 TFL, five sacks in 2022)
  • Four-star cornerback Bravion Rogers (24 tackles, 2 INT, 1 PBU in 2022)
  • Four-star Athlete Dalton Brooks (120 tackles, 8 TFL, 2 INT, 1 FB in 2022)
  • Three-star OT Naquil Betrand
  • Three-star Linebacker Chantz Johnson (70 tackles, 10 TFL, two sacks)
  • Three-star defensive tackle Samu Taumanupepe (60 tackles, 6 TFL)
  • Three-star Punter Tyler White (42.3 yards per punt with a long of 62 yards, 79-81 on PATs, 10-12 FG as a kicker in 2022)

Outside of the arriving 2023 class members, several transfer portal additions, including former Boston College cornerback Josh DeBerry (50 tackles in 2022) and offensive lineman Finn Dirstine, former Jackson State linebacker Jurriente Davis (39 tackles in 2022), former Rice fullback Jerry Johnson, former Fresno State quarterback Jaylen Henderson, and former Colorado State running back David Bailey (20 carries for 61 yards in 2022) have also made their way to campus.

Last but not least, one of the more intriguing transfer portal addition is former Grand Valley State wide receiver Jahdae Walker, who, at 6-4 provides immediate depth to what is already a lethal starting WR unit, yet depth has been an issue, providing Walker a chance to work his way into the rotation this Fall.

Friday Night Notes: 4 big visits on tap for Texas, Florida flips QB from Miami, plus more

In this edition of Friday Night Notes, we examine a big recruiting weekend for the Texas Longhorns, Florida flipping a 4-star QB and more.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

They don’t make anything small in Texas, especially regarding football. Cliché or not, this is a critical recruiting weekend for the Longhorns, as they are hosting four of the top recruits in the class of 2023.

The centerpiece of the group is Ryan (Texas) linebacker Anthony Hill, who just de-committed from Texas A&M. Hill (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) is the best linebacker in his class and ranks as high as No. 17 nationally.

If the Longhorns can get him, he’d become the fourth five-star recruit in their class. However, Hill’s not the only major prospect they have visiting this weekend. Texas has three other studs coming in for Saturday’s game against TCU…

Andrew Hattersley, 247 Sports

Pinnacle (Ariz.) TE Duce Robinson

Another five-star recruit, Robinson (6-foot-6, 225 pounds) is the No. 1 tight end in his class and the best player overall in the state of Arizona. He also has interest from Georgia, USC, Alabama and Oregon.

La Grange (Texas) CB Bravion Rogers

Rogers (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) is ranked No. 6 among cornerbacks and No. 8 overall in Texas. He’s currently committed to Texas A&M.

Martin (Texas) CB Javien Toviano

Toviano (6-foot-0, 185 pounds) is ranked just one spot lower than Rogers at his position. He has at least 34 offers on the table. The schools considered hot to get his commitment include Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Oklahoma.

Any of these four would be a huge get for Texas, which ranked as high as No. 3 in the 2023 recruiting race after they secured Cedric Baxter Jr., the second-best running back in the class. Three months later, they’ve slipped to No. 6, falling behind Georgia, LSU and Ohio State.

Friday Night Notes: Texas A&M enters the chat, UCF hosts ‘Honeycomb’ and more

It’s not how you start a race, it’s how you finish.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school football recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond

It’s not how you start a race; it’s how you finish. We got a reminder of that this week as Texas A&M finally got into the mix with their recruiting class of 2023. After lagging behind other big schools for several months, the Aggies scored two big recruits this week…

John Gutierrez/Special to American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK

On Tuesday, four-star La Grange (Texas) cornerback Bravion Rogers decided to recommit to Texas A&M after decommitting last month.

Rogers (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) is ranked as the seventh-best player in the state and is No. 4 at his position by 247Sports. He also had interest from Alabama, Baylor and Georgia.

In addition to his defensive work, Rogers is a productive running back. During his junior year, he totaled 1,006 yards and 15 touchdowns on just 105 carries. On the other side of the ball, he posted two interceptions and only allowed a 38.1% completion rate.

That same day Texas A&M got another big commitment to bolster their 2023 offensive line. Five-star Westlake (Texas) guard TJ Shanahan Jr. has also committed to Jimbo Fisher’s team. Shanahan (6-foot-4, 310 pounds) is considered one of the most powerful linemen in his class and is ranked No. 150 nationally. The Aggies still have work to do, though. Shanahan is only their 11th recruit overall.

These moves helped propel Texas A&M up several spots in the 2023 recruiting rankings: after leap-frogging over Washington, Northwestern, TCU and Iowa, among others, they’re up to No. 24.

Top 2023 Cornerback Bravion Rogers re-commits to Texas A&M

Top 2023 Cornerback Bravion Rogers re-commits to Texas A&M

Top 2023 cornerback Bravion Rogers officially re-committed to Texas A&M on Tuesday, nearly one full month after he de-committed from the program in the late hours of August 8th, posting via social media that his plan was to explore more of his recruiting options at the time.

Rogers first committed to the Aggies on April 12th of this year, and was a consistent visitor to College State throughout the summer, developing a tight-knit relationship with the coaching staff in the process. Even though his de-commitment did come as a sudden shock to all of us in the Texas A&M media landscape, this is not the first time the program under head coach Jimbo has dealt with the type of recruiting chaos, as the formed beloved free safety for the Aggies Leon O’Neal also committed, then de-committed from the program before finally sticking with the maroon and white.

In accordance with 247Sports, Rogers is the 4th ranked cornerback in the country, the 9th ranked player in Texas, and the 40th overall ranked player in the 2023 recruiting class, while joining Dalton Brooks and Jayvon Thomas in what already looks to be an imposing future defensive backfield thus far.

Gig ‘Em, Bravion!

2023 Cornerback Bravion Rogers decommits from Texas A&M

Well, darnit.

Texas A&M finally seemed to find its momentum on the recruiting trail at the end of July, mostly due to the annual barbeque/ recruiting pool party held on July 30th, the same day that they received a commitment from the No.1 linebacker prospect in the 2023 class, Anthony Hill while gaining a commitment from Shiner, Texas native and projected safety Dalton Brooks later that night.

However, late Monday night, The Aggies received the news that cornerback Bravion Rogers, one of two corners, including Jayvon Thomas, who committed to the Aggies in the 2023 class made the announcement that he is de-committing and re-opening his recruitment.

Rogers stated in a Twitter post,

I want to thank Texas A&M and the coaching staff for the oppurtunity they have given me. Also thanks to all of the fans for the love and support. But after long talks with my family I have decided to decommit from Texas A&M University. Wish nothing but the best to Aggieland! thank ya’ll!

Bravion Rogers was one of the earliest members of the 2023 class for the Aggies, committing on April 12th. Going into his senior year at La Grange High School in La Grange, Texas, he recorded 27 tackles, 6 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions during his junior season.

This news is surprising, to say the least, being that Rogers has been in close contact with the Texas A&M staff since committing in April and visiting the campus multiple times after the fact. After taking an unofficial visit to LSU in late may there is some speculation that the Tigers may have the inside track for a commitment from Rogers, but as we have seen from the ebbs and flows of Johnny Bowens recruitment, the Aggies will likely remain strongly in the mix, and will continue building their relationship with Rogers as long as his recruitment remains open.

#AGGIELITE? 2023 Aggie commits turn to social media to reel in remaining prospects

#AGGIELITE? 2023 Aggie commits turn to social media to recruit for the class

Texas A&M’s 2023 recruiting class isn’t off to the best start, especially in comparison to what they accomplished during the 2022 cycle. First off, let me speak for Aggies everywhere when I say that having to witness Texas dominate the recruiting trail and poach a number of our preferred prospects while “Hook “Em!” and “All Gas, No Brake!” flow across social media isn’t the recipe for sports sanity.

Now, I am not in the business of guarantees, especially when it comes to recruiting, but with some of the most talented 2023 recruits still waiting to make their decision, current Texas A&M commits in the class turned to social media via Twitter using the hashtag #AGGIELITE, with one of the coolest cats in the recruiting class, Colton Thomasson, taking the lead while making his creative pitch to hopeful future signee, offensive lineman TJ Shanahan.

Another current 2023 class member and 4-Star linebacker Daymion Sanford joined in, sending a friendly reminder to his 5-Star defensive line Paetow High School teammate David “DJ” Hicks, who is currently at 100% odds to choose the Aggies according to 247Sports, and 59.7% according to On3.

Cornerback Bravion Rogers was the final member to make his pitch, targeting 5-Star Anthony Hill, the top linebacker in the 2023 class, who is presently choosing between Texas and Texas A&M, predicted at 100% Texas A&M in accordance with 247Sports, and 75.2 for On3.

Finally, Rogers made his final pitch to the Shiner, Texas product who in my humble opinion is the most versatile offensive weapon in the class, 2023 4-Star Running back Dalton Brooks. Brooks is currently projected at 100% for Texas A&M at 247Sports, and 98.5% at On3.
