Here are the players who have not dressed out for the Maroon & White spring game

Here are they players you won’t see during the Aggies’ Maroon & White spring game on Saturday afternoon

Texas A&M’s spring season will come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the annual Maroon & White spring game will wrap up what has been a successful precursor to head coach Mike Elko’s inaugural 2024 season.

However, while this game provides a glimpse of what’s to come during fall camp and the strides the roster has made in just two months under the new regime, several notable players will not appear this afternoon.

Just half an hour before both teams took the field, it was released that over 20 players, including several presumed 2024 starters, will not appear in the spring game due to injury or basic precaution, and thanks to GigEm247’s Carter Karels, here is the complete list of the players who will sit out on Saturday.

Out of that list, former five-star cornerback Dezz Ricks and returning tight end Donovan Green’s absence is notable. Still, if they need added rest and recovery ahead of arduous months ahead, this is more than warranted.

With Tyreek Chappell’s return, how deep is the Aggies’ cornerback room?

With the official return of cornerback Tyreek Chappell, Texas A&M’s CB room is now a predominant strength compared to last season.

Texas A&M and head football coach Mike Elko received more good news regarding next season’s roster, as incoming senior cornerback Tyreek Chappell, who entered the transfer portal in December, removed his name and will officially return for the 2024 campaign.

This offseason, Elko, who watched the Aggies’ dismal defensive performance against Oklahoma State in the TaxAct Texas Bowl, was well aware of last season’s consistent struggles in the secondary due to the lack of depth, talent, and overall size at the cornerback position.

Needing to rebuild the cornerback room, Elko dominated in the open market, adding five veteran CBs from the portal, including Will Lee Jr., Dezz Ricks, Donovan Saunders, Jaydon Hill, and BJ Mayes.

While Chappell isn’t the biggest corner, he was by far the most competent defender on the boundary over the last two seasons. For those unaware, Elko helped recruit him to College Station back in 2021 during his time as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator, right before he departed for Duke.

Including returning second-year cornerbacks Bravion Rogers and Jayvon Thomas, two players who are bound to improve after their “baptism by fire” 2023 season, Texas A&M’s cornerback room now looks like a predominant strength heading into spring football next month.

Making some predictions, here’s what the secondary depth chart might look like in 2024 after Tyreek Chappell’s return.

Texas A&M defensive back withdraws from the portal

Here is some good news for the Aggies defense.

The Texas A&M Aggies and head coach Mike Elko received some positive news on Friday as defensive back Tyreek Chappell withdrew from the transfer portal.

Chappell officially entered the portal on Dec. 6, following the completion of the regular season. He has accumulated 105 tackles, 6.0 TFLs, 2 interceptions, 24 passes defended, and 1 fumble recovery during his three seasons in College Station.

His return gives the defense some experience on the backend for next season. Chappell appeared in 33 games over the past three years per Sports Reference.

Chappell should once again be in the rotation for a starting defensive back role under Mike Elko, who is familiar with the third-year player. Elko ran the defense under Jimbo Fisher during Chappell’s freshman season in 2021. Following the season, Elko left for the head coach vacancy at Duke.

The defensive back room will have plenty of talent as the Aggies look to be among the top contenders in the new-look SEC that welcomes former conference mates, Oklahoma and Texas in the upcoming season.

Texas A&M DB Tyreek Chappell’s dad indicates that he’ll be back for his senior year in College Station

Texas A&M defensive back Tyreek Chappell is returning to Bryan-College Station for his senior season in 2024 according to a source with vast knowledge of the situation.

Texas A&M cornerback Tyreek Chappell is returning to Bryan-College Station for his senior year in 2024 according to a source with vast knowledge of the situation.

Tyreek’s father, Merrill, shared via social media on Tuesday evening that his son will be back for one more season at Kyle Field.

“Senior season loaded let’s go son,” Merill stated on X with a photo of Tyreek in Aggies Maroon & White.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound defensive back was a 3-star recruit in 2021 coming out of Northeast High School in Philadelphia. Merill currently coaches running backs for head coach Chris Riley at Northeast.

Tyreek had a breakout true freshman campaign at Texas A&M in 2021. Chappell was selected to the SEC Coaches’ All-Freshman Team and The Athletic’s Freshman All-America First Team. He also earned the Aggies’ Defensive Top Newcomer Award.

Chappell will now be instructed by head coach Mike Elko, defensive coordinator Jay Bateman and cornerbacks coach Ishmael Aristide.

Texas A&M CB Tyreek Chappell will enter the transfer portal

Elven Aggies have now entered the transfer portal, including starting cornerback Tyreek Chappell on Wednesday afternoon.

Amid hiring new Texas A&M Football head coach Mike Elko, most of Texas A&M’s defense, including nearly every Aggies’ historic 2022 recruiting class member, was familiar with Elko during his four-year career as A&M’s defensive coordinator.

However, after the news that beloved defensive line coach Elijah Robinson would be leaving the program to take the defensive coordinator position at Syracuse, eleven players have now entered the transfer portal, including starting cornerback Tyreek Chappell.

As one of the more consistent players on the Aggies roster, Chappell was a three-year starter since he stepped on campus during the start of the 2021 season, and although he is slightly undersized as an outside corner, the Pennsylvania native recorded 106 tackles, 75 solo tackles, 23 pass deflections, and two interceptions from 2021-2023.

Chappell joins defensive lineman Walter Nolen and Fadil Diggs as the starting defenders who enter the portal on Wednesday, and at this point, we could see more in the coming days.

Five players to watch ahead of Texas A&M vs. No. 14 LSU

Can QB Jaylen Henderson shine? Here are five players to watch ahead of Texas A&M’s season finale vs. No. 14 LSU.

We’ve sadly reached the end of the 2023 college football regular season.

Texas A&M, despite the recent turmoil stemming from former head coach Jimbo Fisher’s firing, is 7-4 and 4-3 in the SEC. It heads to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to take on the 14th-ranked LSU Tigers for an early Saturday kickoff.

In interim head coach Elijah Robinson’s first game at the helm, the longtime assistant earned his first win. The Aggies defeated Abilene Christian, 38-10, behind a solid second-half performance, which included seldom utilized wide receiver Moose Muhammad II’s 104 receiving yard performance that galvanized A&M’s offense.

This Aggie team is playing free and loose, knowing Texas A&M’s new head football coach could be announced anytime.

The Aggies are facing the best offense in college football this season. LSU’s Jayden Daniels has been lights out in SEC play, producing 4,591 total yards and 46 total touchdowns in 11 games. He deserves the Heisman Trophy. To keep him contained in the pocket, the Aggies’ competent defense will need to play its best game of the season. The offense will likely need to score 30 to 35 points to have a chance.

Who will need to step up for the Maroon & White? Here are five players to watch before Saturday’s matchup vs. No. 14 LSU.

Jimbo Fisher provides several injury of updates ahead of Texas A&M vs. Mississippi State

Ahead of Texas A&M vs. Mississippi State, Jimbo Fisher provided several key injury updates during Wednesday’s SEC Teleconference.

On Wednesday, Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher made weekly SEC Teleconference appearance ahead of the Aggies’ Saturday night game vs. Mississippi State.

A&M must accomplish the bare minimum goal of earning bowl eligibility for the first time in two seasons. With a win against State, next weekend’s cupcake matchup vs. Abilene Christian should net them a 7th win and possibly their last before finishing the year against LSU on the road.

Making headlines earlier this week, Aggies’ starting quarterback Max Johnson, who reportedly suffered a somewhat significant upper-body injury in last weekend’s loss to Ole Miss, Fisher stated on Monday that Johnson was healthy enough to practice. As of Wednesday, Johnson is still set to start against the Bulldogs.

“Yeah. He’s practicing. They’re at practice and doing what we need to do.”

Outside of Johnson’s status, Texas A&M starting cornerback Tyreek Chappell and Deuce Harmon and star sophomore wide receiver Evan Stewart, who also sat out against Ole Miss, are on track to return this weekend, according to Fisher, barring any last-minute changes.

“We will see. Those guys are at practice. Some of those guys are practicing back and getting back into a groove.”

Lastly, Fisher’s son Ethan, who recently announced his verbal commitment to Samford University (Jimbo’s alma mater), brought a smile to our collective faces when discussing how proud he was as a Father, especially dealing with Ethan’s health issues over the years.

“I am extremely proud and very happy. There were some times (doctors were) not only saying he could never walk on a football field, but was he going to be here? … Very proud and love him so much.”

Texas A&M will return to Kyle Field to take on Mississippi State on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 pm. CT. The game will air on ESPN2.

Five players to watch in Texas A&M’s Week 7 matchup vs. Tennessee

Will Jimbo Fisher end his SEC road woes? can the Aggies O-line hold up? Here are five players to watch ahead of Texas A&M vs. Tennessee.

Texas A&M (4-2, 2-1 SEC) will hit the road to face the Tennessee Volunteers (4-1, 1-1 SEC) on Saturday afternoon, as head coach Jimbo Fisher is in for one of the roughest environments the SEC has to offer.

Coming off of a bye week, Tennessee and head coach Josh Heupel has yet to find an offensive identity behind the big arm of quarterback Joe Milton, but this unit can score more than 30 plus points at any given week. At the same time, Texas A&M’s Week 6 loss to Alabama created more questions than answers, specifically concerning the Aggies’ secondary and offensive line.

However, Texas A&M’s dominant pass rush and stellar linebacker play have been a consistent bright spot despite the offense’s failure to sustain drives as of late, leaving signal caller Max Johnson’s SEC experience, especially on the road, crucial to the Aggies’ future success.

This week, we have provided several storylines to help provide the full scoop on what to expect on Saturday afternoon.

Focusing on the players that need to make this weekend, here are the five players to watch ahead of Texas A&M vs. Tennessee.

Five players to watch in Texas A&M’s Week 6 matchup vs. Alabama

Will the Aggie D dominate in the trenches? Is Max Johnson ready for Alabama’s secondary? here are five players ahead of Texas A&M vs. Alabama.

Texas A&M (4-1, 2-0 SEC) is just two days away from hosting Alabama (4-1, 2-0 SEC) in the biggest game of the Week 6 slate, as both programs remain the only unbeaten teams in the SEC West. At the same time, Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher is looking for revenge against his former boss, Tide head coach Nick Saban, after falling 24-20 in Tuscaloosa in 2022.

In 2024, the now bitter rival will take a brief hiatus as the division-less SEC will shake things up schedule-wise, including the first matchup between Texas A&M and Texas in more than a decade.

Focusing on Saturday’s showdown, both teams sustained losses in Week 2 to non-conference opponents due to poor defense showings, but since then, things have seemingly turned around, specifically the Aggies’ elite pass rush, only behind the Crimson Tide for total sacks so far this season (20), but ranked first in sack percentage.

However, I personally believe this game will be determined in the trenches, pitting Alabama’s shaky offensive line vs. the Aggies’ ascending D-line, focusing on quarterback Jalen Milroe’s processing and quick decision-making in the pocket.

This week, we have provided several storylines while going behind the scenes with Roll Tide Wire to get the full scoop on what to expect on Saturday afternoon.

Here are the eligible Texas A&M Aggies and projected big board for the 2024 NFL Draft

After just three Aggies were selected in this year’s NFL Draft, the number of eligible prospects for Texas A&M could increase exponentially for the 2024 class.

The 2023 NFL Draft has come and gone, and while Texas A&M had only three prospects declare for this year’s draft, it was encouraging to see all three hear their names called last weekend. Fast forward to the 2024 draft, and the volume of Aggies looking to go pro could exponentially increase.

If last year’s performance was any indication, A&M’s underwhelming 5-7 record could have potentially played a role in the likes of Devon Achane, Antonio Johnson, and Jaylon Jones slipping relative to their 2023 projected draft positions. But if the Maroon and White organize a resounding comeback season in the fall, it wouldn’t be surprising to see NFL scouts taking notice of eligible prospects.

With an eye toward the future, the Aggies have a handful of names on the offensive line, in the receiving room, and on the defense that could declare for next year’s draft. And unlike this year’s trio of prospects, there’s a chance for the Maroon and White to boast a potential first-rounder.

Below is the early big board for eligible Texas A&M prospects for the 2024 NFL Draft, including their current projected draft position according to NFL Mock Draft Database.
