UNC routs Boston College in its ACC Tournament opener

The UNC basketball program handled Boston College easily in its ACC Tournament opener on Wednesday night.

The UNC basketball program got its ACC Tournament underway on Wednesday night and routed Boston College, 85-61.

It was an obvious must-win for the Tar Heels and they showed the energy and passion they needed from the tip.

After a 5-of-23 performance from three in the season finale against Duke, North Carolina hit seven first half 3s en route to a 10-of-23 performance from the perimeter.

UNC’s hot shooting led them to a 14-point halftime lead, but not without some concern. Late in the first half, star forward Armando Bacot went down with an ankle injury and didn’t return for the final 4:34 of the half. He would, however, return and start the second half.

The Tar Heels would stretch its lead to as much as 27 in the second half, thanks to the backcourt duo of RJ Davis and Caleb Love. That pair combined for 40 points on the night on 16-of-32 from the field. They also combined to make seven 3s.

Not only were the shots falling, but UNC’s playmaking was on full display. The ball movement was crisp and moving much better than last time out. The Heels finished with 16 assist on 34 made field goals.

Bacot and Pete Nance both added 10 points as well and UNC got 23 points from its bench. The Tar Heels shot 54.8 percent from the field on the night.

Boston College was held to just 45.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three.

UNC will face the No. 2 seeded Virginia on Thursday night at 7 pm ET for a chance to advance to the ACC Semifinals.

Boston College vs Wake Forest Game Preview, ACC Tournament

Why Boston College Will Win

The Eagles went on a big run to put away Pitt without a problem in the 66-46 in over Tuesday. They were great defensively, they hit 47% from three, and they put together one of their better performances in a few weeks.

Even though the losses lately, the shooting ability has been there, moving the ball around isn’t a problem, and there aren’t enough mistakes to allow for too many easy points.

Wake Forest isn’t big on the offensive glass and it turns the ball over way too much, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Here come the threes.

Wake Forest isn’t Pitt when it comes to hitting the outside shots, leading the ACC in attempted threes and hitting about nine per game. Boston College did a nice job in its last game to get here, but it’s the worst team in the ACC at defending the outside shot.

These two only met once this year and it wasn’t pretty. The Demon Deacons rolled 87-57 by hitting 54% from the field and keeping Boston College from doing anything offensively.

As long as the Eagles can’t get on the move, expect more of the same.

Wake Forest vs Boston College: What’s Going To Happen

Boston College is playing with house money, and here comes the defensive pressure.

Again, the Eagles are shooting well lately. They’ll have to trade twos for threes, but Wake Forest isn’t above going cold from the outside for stretches. There are problems when the three isn’t going down, and it’s going to take a while to get the outside shooting going.

The threes will come through in the second half and Boston College won’t have any answers.

Pitt vs Boston College Game Preview, ACC Conference Tournament

Why Pitt Will Win

The Panthers might be on a rough losing streak, but they’re still playing up to their style. They’re tough, they pound on the inside, and they were able to beat Boston College in early January by coming up with a solid shooting day.

More than anything else, Pitt gets to the free throw line. It does it better than anyone in the ACC, it makes a ton of free throws, and in a game like this with points at a premium, winning on the line will be a must.

They hit 23 free throws in the win in the first game, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Boston College Will Win

Boston College doesn’t usually get hit with a ton of fouls.

It can’t guard from three, but Pitt can’t and doesn’t shoot from the outside. It doesn’t make threes, either, but it forces plenty of mistakes and it’s great on the offensive boards – it can hold up against the Panthers inside.

But again, the key here is to not foul Pitt. It’s going to try hammering away, but the Eagles keep the hacks to a minimum. That was a problem in the first game, but it only committed 15 fouls in the second game, send Pitt to the Lins just 12 times, and it turned into an easy 69-56 win.

Pitt vs Boston College: What’s Going To Happen

Neither team is playing all that well.

These two struggle to shoot, they don’t do much of anything from the outside, and both defenses are spotty, to be nice.

It all comes down to who shoots worse – neither one can overcome a bad shooting day. Pitt is shooting worse than Boston College is.

Duke vs Boston College Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

Boston College just doesn’t score.

It’s not good from three and it’s the worst team in the ACC overall from the field. Throw in the inability to come up with a whole lot of takeaways for easy points, and this will be a grind for the offense.

Duke had the blip against Virginia when it didn’t apply itself to its work, but it came back roaring with a dominant win over Clemson to get back on track.

As long as the Blue Devils are patient and simply do what it’s capable of – keep the ball moving, work for the easy inside shot, don’t turn the ball over – there won’t be a problem. The defense will take care of the rest.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Boston College Will Win

So what can Boston College do to possibly pull this off?

Take its time.

Duke is too good defensively inside to force a whole lot of plays in the interior, and the transition points shouldn’t be there in bunches, but the Eagles should be able to slow this down a bit and keep the score in range.

Basically, Boston College has to shoot the lights out at home.

It’s 1-12 when it shoots worse than 44% and 8-1 when it shoots that or better. That’s how Virginia pulled it off – it hit 48% from the field, rebounded well enough, and it came up with one or two key stops to …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Nah.

Boston College might have the ability at home to make this a fight for a while, but it’s just not consistent enough from the field and doesn’t have the three point ability to bounce back in the game after Duke goes on a decent run.

The Blue Devils will be sleepy in the first half, and it’ll put this away early in the second with one big burst.

Georgia basketball a finalist for coveted transfer E.J. Anosike

Georgia basketball is in the running for elite Sacred Heart forward E.J. Anosike.

Georgia basketball is in the running to land Sacred Heart graduate transfer EJ Anosike.

Anosike, a 6-foot-7 forward, has trimmed his list to Louisville, Wake Forest, Georgetown, Georgia, Boston College, Gonzaga and Tennessee.

“I will make this decision with my family based on the information we have gathered and the relationships we have built,” Anosike said in a Twitter post. “I will make this decision and announcement later this week.”

Anosike is the brother of former Lady Vols basketball player Nicky Anosike (2004-08).

During the 2019-20 season, his redshirt junior year, he averaged 15.7 points and 11.6 rebounds per game (6th in NCAA) for the Pioneers, whose season ended in the Northeast Conference Tournament semifinal. He put up 18 double-doubles in 33 games for Sacred Heart

He told 247Sports that he plans to announce his decision on Friday.

Tristan Freeman of Fansided’s BustingBrackets took an in-depth dive into each of the seven teams on Anosike’s list.

Here is his analysis of Anosike to Georgia:

Despite having likely top-3 NBA Draft pick Anthony Edwards on the roster, the Bulldogs finished at .500 overall on the season and in the bottom-tier of the SEC. Even with forward Rayshaun Hammonds coming back at the center spot, Georgia would still be a fairly young team next year with little hope of making the NCAA Tournament.

Anosike also wouldn’t have much great surrounding perimeter talent outside of Sahvir Wheeler and head coach Tom Crean hasn’t been known as a great developer of talent despite the recruiting success. Minutes would be there at the four-spot but the wins won’t.

Notre Dame vs. Boston College: A Betting Preview

The underdog has covered each of the last four times Notre Dame and Boston College have met up.

Notre Dame basketball has been playing better of late aside from one awful afternoon at Duke and has worked their way to .500 in ACC play at 8-8.  They haven’t however surpassed the .500 mark in conference play this season despite having a couple of chances to earlier this month before falling in road games against Duke and Virginia.

The Fighting Irish get another chance at getting over the .500 hump tonight as they’re in Boston College to take on an Eagles team who beat them back in December, 73-72 at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame is listed as a 4.5 point favorite over the Eagles tonight with the total set at 142.  A successful Boston College money-line bet would pay +105.

Boston College has had their own struggles this year as they enter tonight’s contest just 13-15 overall and 7-10 in conference play compared to Notre Dame’s 17-10 (8-8) mark.

Tip-off is set for 9:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on ACC Network tonight.

A couple of notes for tonight’s game – reminder none of these guarantee a damn thing:

-Notre Dame is 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games.
-The underdog has covered each of the last four times Notre Dame and Boston College have met up.
