Bengals great Boomer Esiason talks leaving longtime TV role

Boomer Esiason is on the way out at CBS amid a major shakeup.

Cincinnati Bengals Ring of Honor member Boomer Esiason is leaving CBS as things change in the NFL broadcasting landscape.

While James Brown will return to host “The NFL Today” next season, Esiason and Phil Simms exit the picture in favor of new arrivals such as Matt Ryan and J.J. Watt.

Esiason recently talked with Dan LeBatard about his departure after two decades of being a staple of NFL cable coverage.

“I was more than happy to step aside. I had my time there,” Esiason said. “I loved that seat. I cherished that seat. I cherished talking to football fans every Sunday, but there comes a time when you have to find some time for yourself. And this was the right time.”

While one of the major shows undergoes a shift, it doesn’t sound like Esiason will fully fade from radio, if nothing else.

Last September, Esiason entered the Bengals Ring of Honor alongside Chad Johnson.

Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms out, JJ Watt and Matt Ryan in on CBS’s The NFL Today

The two Pro Bowl quarterbacks are out at CBS after 48 combined years.

CBS’s bellwether Sunday NFL show is going to look different in 2024. Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms, two longtime standbys for pre- and post-game analysis on The NFL Today, are leaving the network.

Esiason and Simms had spent a combined 48 years at CBS — Esiason 22 and Simms 26. The two former Pro Bowl quarterbacks were reliable fountains of analysis alongside James Brown, Bill Cowher, Nate Burleson and, on a part-time basis, JJ Watt in 2024. In order to fill the voids they’ve left behind, fellow former quarterback Matt Ryan will go from the color commentary side of things to the pre-game show. Watt and Burleson are expected to play larger roles as well.

Here’s what Esiason had to say about his departure:

“I am stepping away from The NFL Today on CBS,” said Esiason on his WFAN radio show. “More their decision than maybe mine. But I really thought the Super Bowl was my swan song and I thought the way CBS handled, especially us in Las Vegas, was amazing.

“I had been there for 22 years. It’s been an unbelievable run for me and I’m so grateful and privileged to have been there for 22 years.”

Simms took to Twitter for a brief confirmation of the news.

The NFL Today will undoubtedly feel different without its wise, occasionally slightly bitter quarterback sages in the middle of the debate. Esiason and Simms brought a certain gravity to the desk, even if the overstuffed nature of ever-expanding studio shows had tamped down their input over the last decade.

Ryan should be able to replicate some of that after a reasonable broadcasting debut last fall. But until we see the new panel in action, it’s hard to know whether this was a necessary step for CBS to move forward or a jump backward for the network’s sports coverage.

Boomer Esiason, Phil Simms out at ‘The NFL Today’ on CBS

Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms are out of ‘The NFL Today’ team at CBS

Broadcasters are not immune to the quarterback carousel.

CBS announced on Monday it was making changes to its “The NFL Today” studio team. A former New York Giant and New York Jets quarterback are out.

Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason will no longer be in the studio for the game-day show.

Replacing them will be former Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan, who officially retired last week but worked games for CBS in 2023.

Boomer Esiason says Ben Johnson as Commanders next coach is a lock

Boomer Esiason believes Ben Johnson is the top available coach and that he’s going to Washington.

Who will be the next head coach of the Washington Commanders? Washington began the next step in its head coaching search this week, scheduling second interviews for this week and next week.

The Commanders interviewed Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik twice this week, and have scheduled in-person interviews with Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn for this week, too.

Next week, the Commanders will travel to Detroit to interview Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Washington also wants to schedule second interviews with Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald and associate head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver.

Since Washington fired Ron Rivera over two weeks ago, Johnson has been the reported top target. However, the Commanders, under new owner Josh Harris and new GM Adam Peters, promised a thorough search to find the best leader.

While many around the NFL believe Johnson will end up in Washington once Detroit’s season ends, one NFL legend and media member believes Johnson to the Commanders is a “lock.”

On his radio show, “Boomer and Gio,” on WFAN in New York, Boomer Esiason said Johnson is the best coach available — and that was before the Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh on Wednesday evening.

“I’ll tell you who the best coach available is…….his name is Ben Johnson; he’s the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions,” Esiason said.

“Runs an unbelievable offense, but he’s going to be the next head coach of the Commanders, I told ya.”

Esiason’s co-host asked him: “So, you’re telling me that’s a lock?”

“Yeah,” Esiason replied. When pressed again, Esiason said, “Yes.”

There’s certainly a lot of smoke surrounding Johnson’s possible move to Washington, but nothing can be finalized until after the Lions lose. Detroit plays the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship on Sunday. If the Lions win, they’ll play in Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11.

Chad Johnson and Boomer Esiason enshrined in Bengals Ring of Honor

The best moments for two Bengals legends.

Two Cincinnati Bengals greats were enshrined in the Ring of Honor before the game against the Los Angeles Rams Monday night.

Chad Johnson and Boomer Esiason were recognized in a ceremony on the field, joining many former Bengals stars and there were other former Bengals that attended, like former head coach Marvin Lewis and cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones.

Both Esiason and Johnson played with the Bengals for 10 years. Johnson finished his time in Cincinnati as the franchise leader in both yards, with 10,783, and touchdowns, with 66. He made six Pro Bowls and was first-team All-Pro twice.

Esiason won an MVP award in 1988, getting the Bengals to a Super Bowl in that same season. He finished with 27,149 passing yards as a Bengal and 187 passing touchdowns.

Boomer Esiason says Joe Burrow will be on Netflix’s ‘Quarterback’ Season 2

Is Joe Burrow keeping this a secret?

Not too long ago, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow shut down the idea he would appear on Netflix’s “Quarterback” show during its second season.

But there appears to be some momentum going in the other direction now.

According to Fox 19’s Jared Goffinet, former Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason just hopped on his WFAN morning show and said the following while talking about Giants quarterback Daniel Jones possibly going on the show: “It sounds like Joe Burrow is doing the ‘Quarterback,’ by the way.”

That’s not official confirmation or anything, but it does directly counter what Burrow recently told onlookers about how he might consider the show in the future, but didn’t want to during what was supposed to be his first normal summer (before the ankle injury).

Still, fans and others have speculated that all possible show candidates have been directed to deny connection to it in order to keep the hype of a surprise reveal high.

And given Burrow’s plight with the injury comeback and contract negotiations, he would make for one of the best possible storylines for the show.

All Bengals fans can do is wait and see.

Boomer Esiason talks about former Bengals coaches

Notable comments from Boomer Esiason after the announcement he’s joining the Bengals Ring of Honor.

Former Cincinnati Bengals Boomer Esiason and Chad Johnson are both going to be inducted into the Bengals Ring of Honor to cement their legacies on the team permanently.

Esiason talked with Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com about how much he liked having Bruce Coslet as his first offensive coordinator when he came into the league.

Here’s some of what he said:

“Bruce Coslet was always the hammer. People didn’t see that. He was the offensive coordinator when I got there. He was always the one who told me to keep my elbow up, watch the footwork. And Sam would work on my footwork and all that other stuff, but he still had to be the head coach to everybody else. Bruce was the tough guy for me, and it’s one of the reasons why when I did ask the Bengals to trade me after the ’92 season, I wanted to reunite with Bruce in New York because I knew his offense and he knew me as a player.”

Coslet was the head coach of the Bengals when Esiason returned to Cincinnati for his final year in 1997.  He certainly seemed to have a huge impact on Esiason’s career if he was following him around for much of it.

Esiason also said that Kenny Anderson and Turk Schonert helped him adjust to the NFL when he first came into Cincinnati.

Boomer Esiason weighs in on Corey Dillon’s Bengals Ring of Honor comments

Boomer Esiason has thoughts on Corey Dillon’s comments.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

It feels like nearly everyone has weighed in on Corey Dillon’s comments about the Ring of Honor recently established by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Now Bengals great Boomer Esiason has added his thoughts on the matter to the mix, posting the following message on Twitter and including a quote from Mark Twain:

“Yes I read it. Because the Bengals have waited so long to honor their past we all have to wait. As Mark Twain said. ‘When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Cincinnati because it’s always 20 years behind the times.’ Corey’s time will come…”

That’s pretty much what we said right when Dillon’s comments went viral. Dillon is right to throw some critiques at the Bengals for how the Ring of Honor process unfolds and he’s 100 percent worthy of the honor.

At the same time, the Ring of Honor was only established a few years ago and the list of guys to make it in before him were all as deserving, if not more so.

This will all be an afterthought in the next few years when Dillon gets in, but for now, Esiason’s on the money about the situation.

Boomer Esiason warns Giants to steer clear of DeAndre Hopkins

Former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason warns the New York Giants (and Jets) against signing free agent WR DeAndre Hopkins.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

When the Arizona Cardinals released wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in May, many felt the New York Giants would be an ideal landing spot for the former Pro Bowler.

The Giants were also connected to Hopkins via trade rumors earlier this offseason when Arizona was reportedly shopping their star receiver. Head coach Brian Daboll was asked about Hopkins following his release and said the Giants would do their due diligence.

However, not everyone is a fan of the Giants potentially signing Hopkins, including WFAN’s Boomer Esiason.

“I just don’t see it for either one of these two teams here in New York,” Esiason said on WFAN.

“His reputation, it’s not great, Everybody knows that he’s a great athlete and a great player, but the work ethic and the commitment to practice and all that other stuff is really where the big question marks reside.”

The Giants did add several weapons around Daniel Jones this offseason, most notably tight end Darren Waller. But they are still lacking a true No. 1 receiver, and adding a talent like Hopkins fills a void on the roster — even this late in his career.

But if Hopkins truly lacks the commitment and work ethic Esiason claims he does, that is not something that would be tolerated by the current Giants regime. Culture is important to general manager Joe Schoen and Daboll, and that will always come first.

Ultimately, Hopkins’ upcoming deal will likely price the Giants out anyway. They have obvious salary cap restraints and won’t engage in a bidding war.
