Down 30-10 with 4 minutes left, Colorado State shocks Boise State on Hail Mary

Colorado State pylled off an all-time comeback against Boise State

Colorado State football in 2023 will be remembered for more than its double-overtime loss to Deion Sanders and Colorado.

The Rams’ Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and Dallin Holker saw to that on Saturday night.

Capping a miraculous comeback from 22 points down with 4:08 left, Fowler-Nicolosi connected with Holker on a Hail Mary as the game ended.

The PAT gave Colorado State a 31-30 victory over the Broncos in Fort Collins.

Now to the keys to victory for the Rams.

Keys to a colorado state victory

1. Composure

The Rams have been a boom or bust team this year. Sometimes within the same game. In order to earn their first ever win over Boise State, CSU isn’t going to have to stay composed. They can’t get too high or too low. Play the game as it comes to them and they have a chance.

2. Play Smart Defense

The Rams grew frustrated last week and through the kitchen sink at the Aggies. Unfortunately, Utah State seemed to have a perfect answer every time. Against Boise State, the Rams have to keep everything in front of them. Mohamed Kamara is a game time decision and if he can’t go others will have to step up.

3. Take what the defense gives you

Another game time decision in Tory Horton. And again, if Horton can’t go, the offense has to stpe up. The offense for the Rams let them down last week, this week they need to step up. They can’t try too much, but should only take what the defense gives them.

Prediction

It’s homecoming in Fort Collins. The Rams seem to play the Broncos close in Fort Collins, for the most part. This could be the day, but I don’t see the Rams getting their first win over Boise State. CSU will keep it close, but the Broncos will put it out in the end.

Final Score: Boise State 38, Colorado State 31

25 best college football records in the last 10 years

Here are the top 25 records in college football since 2013. Are you surprised by any of these?

As much as you may not like to admit it, the 2013 college football season was a decade ago, and a lot has happened in the sport since then. Florida State stormed its way up through the rankings with a Heisman Trophy winner in Jameis Winston to win the final BCS national championship in history before the sport changed over to the new College Football Playoff in 2014. But the more time passed, some things seemed to be the same.

Alabama continued to dominate more often than not. Ohio State racked up more wins among Big Ten teams than anyone. And the top Group of 5 contenders typically came form the same group. But what schools have had the most success in the win column over the past decade as we begin to prepare for the 2023 season? The answer is not at all surprising, but the order in how the top 25 teams rank may give you a few surprises once you look through the records. It can also give you a reminder that while the past couple of seasons may have been great for some, the past decade saw things even out a little bit here and there.

Here is a look at the best records among FBS college football programs since the start of the 2013 season up through the end of the 2022 season. The records referenced are sourced from Team Rankings.

Ranking the Oregon Ducks biggest non-conference football rivals

Oregon’s played a lot of big-name schools over the years. Which non-conference team is the Ducks’ biggest rival?

Earlier this weekend, we went through the ranks of the Pac-12 conference and tried to determine which team was actually the biggest rival to the Oregon Ducks.

While it seems like an easy answer on the surface — of course, it’s the Washington Huskies — when you break it down into on-field results and fan vitriol, there were actually a couple of teams that really gave the Dawgs a run for their money.

Now we want to expand our scope a little bit and try to identify the biggest non-conference rivals for the Ducks over the years. Each and every season, between pre-conference play and post-season bowl games, the Ducks have gone up against a number of the best teams in the nation, and some matchups have happened enough to the point where a real rivalry has developed. In a couple of other instances, it’s only taken a single game to spur on enough animosity between fan bases that some real hatred has sprouted roots.

So of all the non-conference teams that the Ducks have lined up against, which one is the biggest rival? Here are our rankings.

USC athletic director candidate profile: Jeremiah Dickey, Boise State

Irony: If Dickey had arrived at Boise State in 2018 instead of 2021, the Broncos could have been in position to join the Pac-12. Chew on that.

We begin every USC athletic director candidate profile with the disclaimer that for the purposes of our discussion, a “candidate” is not a formally declared pursuant of the job or someone USC has on its short list. We don’t have either of those lists yet. For now, we’re merely referring to talented individuals whom USC should consider. That’s a candidate as of Memorial Day weekend.

As we continue our series of profiles of candidates — nothing extraordinarily in depth, but enough to give you a general sense of what this person could bring to the table at USC — we will look at Boise State’s dynamic, young athletic director, Jeremiah Dickey.

Media figures and fans in the state of Idaho think he’s doing a really good job. Interestingly, he’s doing such a good job that he’s making Boise State fans and analysts regret that the program didn’t have better ADs in the years preceding his arrival in January of 2021.

Mike Prater of the Idaho Press and Blue Turf Sports wrote this about Boise State athletics in February:

“Former president Bob Kustra focused on fighting the system, pushing for improved postseason access for the college football little guy. He played a small role in the 12-team tournament that debuts in 2024, but building something special in his own backyard was not a priority.

“Former athletic director Mark Coyle was a career-chaser.

“Former athletic director Curt Apsey was a country-clubber.

“Great guys, but neither did anything of significance to invest in the future of Boise State athletics. It wasn’t what Boise State needed at the time. Today, the timing couldn’t be worse.

“Enter Dickey, who was hired January 2021 — and he’s been cranking hard, raising cash, fixing infrastructure, creating buzz, networking, building plans, pushing a vision and making a massive difference ever since.”

Dickey appears to be supremely competent at the various things athletic directors are supposed to do. He has the big-picture vision and the gift of person-to-person retail politics to carry it out, one person at a time. Yet, he walked into a situation where a lot of stakeholders knew improvement was needed. That’s not necessarily the USC job. This is about maintaining a championship standard at an athletic department which has made significant recent gains due to great coaching hires by Mike Bohn. Dickey is skilled, and he has a vision, but in the Big Ten, would his vision fit USC’s needs? That’s a question worth asking.

2023 NFL draft: Watch highlights of new Chargers DL Scott Matlock

Get familiar with the newest member of the Chargers, Scott Matlock.

The Los Angeles Chargers continued to stockpile defensive talent by taking

The Chargers needed to continue beefing up their defensive line with low-cost selections in the draft, and Matlock should factor into their depth chart through training camp and the preseason.

Check out some of his best plays as a member of the Boise State football program below to get acquainted with his skillset ahead of the 2023 season:

Instant analysis of the Chargers’ pick of Boise State DL Scott Matlock at No. 200 overall

What the selection of Scott Matlock means for the Los Angeles Chargers.

With two players returning from season-ending injuries on the defensive line, the Chargers have elected to add more depth.

Scott Matlock out of Boise State was the Chargers’ selection at the 200th overall pick. An elite athlete with a 9.65 RAS, Matlock is a quick and agile body on the line with a decent power profile.

An Idaho native, Matlock spent five seasons at Boise State, starting 32 games from 2020 onward. He tied for the Broncos’ lead in quarterback hurries with 7 in 2022 and was named to the All-Mountain West second team in 2021 and 2022.

Given his lighter weight (296 lbs) and elite speed and agility grades, Matlock is another contender at five-technique behind Morgan Fox if second-round pick Tuli Tuipulotu is going to primarily be a traditional edge rusher.

LA struggled to generate interior pass rush beyond Fox a season ago, which is where Matlock will help out in spades. The Chargers now have Austin Johnson and Otito Ogbonnia to primarily stop the run, with Fox and Matlock to rush the passer while Sebastian Joseph-Day plays an all-around role. Given his draft status, he’ll likely only play a small share of the snaps to begin with, but LA needs all the value they can get from a pass rush perspective.

While Matlock benched 225 lbs 29 times, showcasing decent power, his play strength varies from play to play. Boise State primarily played four-man fronts, which left Matlock to play more from a three-technique spot. In LA’s three down fronts, Matlock can move a bit further to the outside, where his quickness will serve him well.

Bottom line: LA adds more pass rush presence from the interior, giving them more flexibility on the defensive line as a whole.

2023 NFL draft: Chargers pick DT Scott Matlock with No. 200 overall selection

The Chargers added depth to the interior part of the defensive line.

The Chargers have taken former Boise State defensive tackle Scott Matlock with the No. 200 overall selection in the 2023 NFL draft.

Matlock started three years for the Broncos, finishing his career with 115 total tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks in 46 games played.

At 6-foot-4 and 296 pounds, Matlock impressed at his Pro Day with a personal record of 29 reps on the bench press and ran a 4.81 in the 40-yard dash. He also touted a 4.27 shuttle time and 29.5 inches on the vertical jump.

Matlock was a participant at the East-West Shrine Bowl, the prestigious all-star game in Las Vegas, NV.

What would a CFP field look like if compared to the NCAA men’s Final Four?

Making a CFP field that is reminiscent of this year’s NCAA men’s Final Four.

This year’s Final Four field is a bit different than years past. There are no “Blue Bloods” among the teams competing for the national championship. Unless you consider UConn among the blue-blood squads. If you ask Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga, they definitely are.

The Huskies are the only team that has been on this stage before but it has been nine years since they cut down the nets. San Diego State, Florida Atlantic, and Miami are all vying to win their school’s first title.

How would this relate to the College Football Playoff? The upcoming college football season will be the last time that we see the field of four for the annual tournament to determine the national champions. Starting in 2024 there will be 12 teams competing for the title.

In the spirit of having a unique field of four in the College Football Playoffs, College Sports Wire tried to compare how that field would relate to this year’s NCAA men’s basketball Final Four field.

Boise State S JL Skinner suffers torn pectoral during predraft training

Boise State safety JL Skinner will have surgery next week, but will still attend the NFL Scouting Combine for interviews with teams

One of the top safety prospects in the 2023 NFL draft class will be starting his transition to the next level by rehabbing a new injury.

Boise State’s JL Skinner suffered a torn pectoral muscle during his predraft training, and will have surgery next week. Skinner will obviously miss the on-field drills at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, but will still be in attendance for interviews with NFL teams.

The news was first reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, then confirmed on social media by Skinner himself.

It remains to be seen when Skinner will be back to full strength and ready to return to the field, but his film shows a high-upside player who could make a big impact at the next level whenever he’s fully healed.
