Bobby Price moving to cornerback from safety, impressing Lions coach Dan Campbell

Lions coach Dan Campbell is very intrigued by Price’s potential at cornerback and on special teams

On the Buffalo Bills’ final offensive drive of their preseason win over the Detroit Lions, it was a bit surprising to see No. 47 aligned at outside cornerback for the home team. Bobby Price has spent his career as a safety for the Lions, but there he was marking the top receiver on the field for Buffalo.

Price is in his second season out of Norfolk State. He stuck around on the Lions practice squad as an undrafted rookie, but he was facing an uphill battle to stick on the team at safety. In his first real test at cornerback, which he only started playing in practice earlier this week, Price flashed some legit potential.

That was Price making an excellent breakup on a crossing route, expertly swatting the ball away from a trail technique. He might have held some jersey a bit, but it was subtle enough to go uncalled. Price also had a smart run fill from the outside.

Coach Dan Campbell said after the game that Price’s length and athleticism make him a natural fit at cornerback.

“Bobby is very intriguing, very intriguing because he is a long, linear, explosive athlete who’s been playing safety. We think he can really help us on special teams, but now we’re not so sure that he may not be a corner because he runs so (well) and he is a really good athlete. Look, we’re intrigued. Look, we just made this – he really just started getting reps at corner a couple of days ago really. He’s still just using – he’s a baby fawn right now as it pertains to corner, but he’s so talented. We kind of feel like this may actually be the better move for him.”

Campbell then revealed the sales pitch he likely made to Price — the ability to make the team.

“To know that – let’s just say hypothetically, you start getting down to cut time and we know he can help us on special teams and he just continues to grow as a corner and develop, but also can play a little safety if you have to have it, that’s pretty valuable. So, our eyes are on Bobby Price,” Campbell enthused.

Price got beat over the top on a critical completion on Buffalo’s scoring drive. His raw technique on the outside showed, unfortunately. The move to cornerback is a smart idea for both Price and the Lions nonetheless. It’s an easy ticket to the practice squad for the superb athlete who is quickly becoming a more versatile asset for Detroit.

Detroit Lions Week 17 Rookie report: One last game to make an impression

There’s just one game left of the 2020 season, and the Detroit Lions’ rookie class is set to face off against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 17.

There’s just one game left of the 2020 season, and the Detroit Lions’ rookie class is set to face off against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 17.

With the team being eliminated from the playoffs, this is the time for these young players to get more playing time and get their final evaluations before the upcoming offseason.

The eight rookies remaining on the Lions’ roster have had very different seasons, but all could have a chance to make an impact on Sunday afternoon.

RB D’Andre Swift

Detroit is down to just three running backs and Swift is the clear number one as they prepare for Minnesota.

The rookie has struggled in recent weeks, due in part to the team going against some of the top defenses in the league. In each of the last two games, Swift had a fumble and has averaged 81 total yards from scrimmage.

Luckily for Swift, Minnesota is coming off a game where they allowed six touchdowns from a running back. This could open the door for the second-round pick from Georgia to have a big game.

OL Jonah Jackson and Logan Stenberg

Jackson had a spectacular start to the season and played well at both right and left guard on Detroit’s starting offensive line.

Much like Swift, he’s struggled in recent weeks, but still has only allowed four sacks on the year. At this point, it’s all but certain that Jackson remains as Detroit’s starting left guard for the foreseeable future.

Stenberg, on the other hand, has not had as great of a rookie season and is once again inactive for this game.

The fourth-round pick has only been active for two games and still couldn’t get any snaps on offense despite Detroit having more than their fair share of injuries to the offensive line.

EDGE Julian Okwara

Okwara returned from injured reserve last weekend and went on to record his first career stats.

Taking 20 defensive snaps against Tampa Bay, Okwara managed to make two tackles, one of which went for a loss of yardage.

He and Austin Bryant will serve as Detroit’s JACK linebackers against the Vikings. Expect about the same amount of production out of Detroit’s third-round pick in the final game of the season.

WR Quintez Cephus

Even with Kenny Golladay out, Cephus has not been able to capitalize on the extra offensive snaps that he’s been receiving.

Luckily for Cephus, he’s in a good situation to step up in this upcoming matchup. The rookie is the only currently active wide receiver under contract in Detroit past this season, meaning that the Lions may want to get some extended looks at him.

Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola, and Mohamed Sanu all top the receiver depth chart, and all three are over 30 years old. This leaves a window open for the 22-year-old rookie to come in and make an impact on offense.

Cephus has 18 receptions for 298 yards and a score on the season and could record his second career touchdown on Sunday afternoon.

DL John Penisini

Penisini has anchored the defensive line as nose tackle for most of the season, but that could change now that top free-agency acquisition Danny Shelton is back on the active roster.

The rookie lineman took nearly three-fourths of the defensive snaps last weekend and recorded four tackles.

So far, the sixth-round rookie has exceeded expectations and has proven that he can be versatile from the interior of the defensive line. Penisini has four tackles-for-loss and a sack so far this season as well as one quarterback pressure and just one missed tackle.

Expect him to still have a bigger role on defense, but his snap counts will go down with Shelton back in the starting lineup.

TE Hunter Bryant

The undrafted rookie has one career reception for an impressive 44 yards. Right now, Bryant is the third tight end on the roster and is expected to have a very limited role.

S Bobby Price

With the release of Jayron Kearse, Price was signed to the active roster, but unfortunately, he was declared inactive for this game.

Detroit Lions Week 17 inactives: Matthew Stafford and Frank Ragnow ACTIVE

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

After elevating C Evan Brown and DT Albert Huggins from the practice squad this week, the Lions’ roster has increased to 55-players. On a traditional week, the Lions would need to reduce that roster down to 46-players, but because they kept eight offensive linemen on their active game-day roster, they are now eligible to expand their roster to 48-players, meaning they need to declare seven of their 55-players inactive.

Here are those seven players.

Lions inactives list

  • WR Kenny Golladay (hip) — Ruled OUT
  • RT Tyrell Crosby (ankle) — Ruled OUT
  • IOL Joe Dahl (back) — Ruled OUT
  • LB Jamie Collins (neck)
  • OG Logan Stenberg
  • DT Albert Huggins
  • S Bobby Price

Golladay being ruled out means the Lions will once again start Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola, and Mohamad Sanu. Expect Quintez Cephus to get plenty of playing time, as he is the only receiver on the current active roster signed beyond this season.

Despite Crosby, Dahl, and Stenberg being ruled out, the Lions still have a starting offensive line they feel comfortable with — but if anyone gets injured, things get messy real quick.

Collins gave it a go on Friday and tried to get himself ready for today, but he was not healthy enough to play. Jahlani Tavai will replace him as the starting MIKE, and last week, it was Jarrad Davis stepping up as the second linebacker.

Huggins was elevated as insurance, but with Danny Shelton active, Huggins was not needed.

Price was signed to the active roster yesterday, and with him being inactive today, it’s a sign they wanted to get him under contract for future purposes.

Vikings’ inactive list

Detroit Lions activate Danny Shelton, sign Bobby Price, elevate 2 from practice squad

The Detroit Lions announced six roster moves ahead of their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, including activating defensive tackle Danny Shelton from injured reserve and signing safety Bobby Price from the practice squad to the active roster. Other roster moves include elevating center Evan Brown and defensive tackle Albert Huggins for tomorrow’s game, activating practice squad linebacker Anthony Pittman from the Reserve/COVID-19 list, and releasing defensive lineman Frank Herron.

Shelton was added to injured reserve with a knee injury in early December, and after three weeks he worked his way back to practices. He has been activated to the roster in hopes of playing against the Vikings on Sunday, but his knee could still keep him from the game, as he was added to this week’s injury report and listed as questionable.

With Shelton being a potential game-time decision, it explains the elevation of Huggins from the practice squad. With the Vikings’ strong running offense, the Lions appear to want to have at least one nose tackle other than John Penisini on the game-day roster.

Herron, who is more of a 3T/Big DE, was released in order to make room for Shelton.

Price will take the vacated roster spot of safety Jayron Kearse, who was released earlier in the week. In Week 17, he will mainly contribute on special teams, but Price is an athlete with upside and this move appears to be more about the future. In the grand scheme of roster development, Price will give the Lions four safeties under contract heading into the offseason.

Brown was called upon to replace Joe Dahl at center last week, contributing on 28 of the Lions’ 53 offensive snaps. This week, Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow is expected to be back in the lineup — he is listed as questionable — but Dahl remains out and the Lions will turn to Brown to back up the position once again.

One final note: Pittman, who was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list two weeks ago, has cleared the league protocols and will return back to the practice squad.

Detroit Lions make 3 practice squad moves, protect 4 in Week 16

Detroit Lions made a series of practice moves on Tuesday, adding C Jon Toth, releasing C Marcus Martin, placing LB Anthony Pittman on the COVID-19 list, and protecting four players in Week 16.

[jwplayer Huuatmwd-ThvAeFxT]

Detroit Lions made a series of practice moves on Tuesday, adding center Jon Toth, releasing center Marcus Martin, placing linebacker Anthony Pittman on the COVID-19 list, and protecting four players in Week 16.

The Lions protected players include, center Evan Brown, defensive tackle Albert Huggins, corner Tramaine Brock, and safety Bobby Price.

With Frank Ragnow still dealing with a throat injury, the Lions turned to Joe Dahl to start at center last week, and elevated natural center Martin to act as a reserve. Unfortunately, Martin has exhausted his elevation eligibility in 2020, and the Lions released him to make room for Toth.

Toth (6-5, 310-pounds) played center at Kentucky, was undrafted in 2017, and joined the Eagles. After just over a year on Philadelphia’s practice squad, he joined the Jets practice squad in 2018. He also spent time in the XFL with the D.C. Defenders, before joining the Browns earlier this year.

Toth will compete with Brown (who is protected this week) for a potential elevation spot in week 16. Neither has been elevated this year.

Brock has also not used an elevation this year, but with corners Darryl Roberts and Mike Ford banged up (both were estimated to be limited on Tuesday) they may need him as an elevation option this week. Brock will be competing with fellow practice squader Alex Meyers — who was posterized by Derrick Henry last week.

Huggins was elevated once by the Lions in Week 12, while Price was a standard elevation in Week 13, and a COVID-19 replacement elevation in Week 14, meaning each has one standard elevation remaining as COVID-19 elevations don’t count against the standard numbers.

Pittman was placed on the COVID-19 list and per an NFL/NFLPA agreement, teams do not differentiate between if a player tested positive for COVID-19 or if he had a close contact exposure, so it’s unclear how long he will be out at this time.

However, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, “One Lions player and one non-player tested positive for COVID-19, per league source. The team facility is closed and players and coaches are meeting virtually, with contact tracing ongoing.”

So, if Pittman did indeed test positive, his season could potentially be over. But, if the report is wrong, and it is a close contact exposure — like Matthew Stafford, Jarrad Davis, and Jalen Elliott earlier this year — it’s possible he could return before the season’s conclusion.

Lions protect same 4 players, release RB Dalyn Dawkins from practice squad

The Detroit Lions made a series of practice squad moves on Tuesday, protecting the same four players as last week and releasing running back Dalyn Dawkins.

The Detroit Lions made a series of practice squad moves on Tuesday, protecting the same four players as last week — OT Dan Skipper, EDGE Kareem Martin, DT Albert Huggins, and S Bobby Price — and releasing running back Dalyn Dawkins.

Last week, after protection, Skipper, Martin, and Price were all elevated to the game-day roster and all four protected players have been elevated at least once this season.

Skipper has been elevated twice — Week’s 10 and 14 — and has exhausted his elevation eligibility. If the Lions want him to play again this season, they will need to sign him to the active roster. That could be a possibility this week, with Tyrell Crosby’s health uncertain, and Hal Vaitai still on injured reserve — though he is eligible to be removed this week, if healthy.

Price has also been elevated twice this season — Week’s 13 and 14 — but unlike Skipper, he still has one eligibility elevation remaining. Last week, Price was elevated as a COVID-19 replacement for Everson Griffen, which does not count towards the standard elevation count. Price is a candidate for elevation this week, as C.J. Moore is still dealing with an ankle injury and his status is up in the air. Price has seen 35 special teams snaps over the last two weeks, including getting some run as a starting gunner.

With Griffen out, Martin saw 11 snaps on the edge last week. And with Griffen — who announced via Instagram that he had contracted the COVID-19 virus — likely to miss this week’s game, Martin could be elevated once again. Working against him is the fact that EDGE Julian Okwara (still on IR) has been practicing for two weeks and is a candidate to return to action soon, and EDGE Trey Flowers (also still on IR) has been moving towards a potential return as well.

The Lions are getting healthier at defensive tackle — though Da’Shawn Hand still looked limited last week — but with John Penisini the only rostered nose tackle, protecting Huggins looks like an insurance move.

After three different stints on the practice squad, the Lions quietly moved on from Dawkins last night. This gives the Lions an open spot on the practice squad — which could go to RB Kerrith Whyte, who has been on the practice squad IR since the fourth week of the season.

Another potential option is quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, who had a try out with the Lions yesterday — his second try out with Detroit this season:

Lions Week 14 rookie report: D’Andre Swift’s on track to return to action

Examining the Detroit Lions rookie’s roles as they prepare to take on the Green Bay Packers in Week 14.

Riding high after a win against the Chicago Bears last weekend, the Detroit Lions will be hosting the Green Bay Packers in another NFC North matchup.

With Darrell Bevell taking the reigns as the interim head coach, the Lions have seen some optimistic changes to their playbook and how players are utilized on the field.

With a second week to learn more from Bevell and a tough divisional matchup ahead of them, what is to be expected from Detroit’s 2020 rookie class?

CB Jeff Okudah

The 2020 season has not been kind to the Lions’ first-round pick.

Okudah missed the first game of the season because of an injury. Once he was healthy, his first career matchups were against some of the league’s top talents. He has had more than his fair share of rookie mistakes, and now it seems his debut year is over as he prepares for his upcoming surgery and heads to the injured reserve list.

Expect Amani Oruwariye and Darryl Roberts to be Detroit’s outside cornerbacks while Justin Coleman mans the slot.

RB D’Andre Swift

After missing the last two games due to a concussion and issues with migraines, it appears Detroit’s up-and-coming rookie running back will make his return.

Assuming he does play, Swift may need some time to reacclimate to the game. Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson have been sharing snaps in the Lions backfield, with Peterson doing most of the work on the ground and Johnson playing more as a receiver.

If Swift returns, he could immediately fill both of those roles for Detroit’s offense. The rookie has 606 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns on the season. If the Lions want to stay competitive in this matchup, they better hope that Swift can play.

OL Jonah Jackson and Logan Stenberg

Not much has changed for the roles of either rookie offensive lineman in recent weeks.

Jackson struggled a little more than usual last week against Chicago, but was luckily bailed out by some Bears defensive penalties. The rookie out of Ohio State will still get the start at left guard. He has allowed four sacks on the season and has committed the same number of penalties.

Stenberg took the field for the first time in his pro career last week, albeit just for three special teams snaps. The fourth-round pick will continue to serve as a reserve offensive lineman and should be active for the game as the Lions’ eighth lineman.

WR Quintez Cephus

Filling in for Kenny Golladay, rookie Quintez Cephus had quite the showing in Chicago. Cephus had the best game of his young career with two receptions for 63 yards and one very impressive touchdown.

He took the field for a little less than half of the team’s offensive snaps last weekend and that isn’t expected to change this week. The rookie should still be considered as Detroit’s second option behind Marvin Jones and will split some snaps with Mohamed Sanu as well.

DL John Penisini

After taking over as Detroit’s starting nose tackle, Penisini came through for the defense with three tackles as well as an important fumble recovery late in the game against Chicago.

Unfortunately, the sixth-round rookie’s status for the Packers game is questionable as he deals with a shoulder injury he suffered late in the week during practice.

If he can’t play, the Lions have no other rostered nose tackles and will have to try and utilize Kevin Strong and Frank Herron in the attempts to stop Aaron Jones and the rest of Green Bay’s rushing attack.

TE Hunter Bryant

Bryant saw the field for the first time in his NFL career last weekend and is expected to play again this week. The undrafted rookie took a mere 11 snaps in that game – five on offense and the rest on special teams.

Bryant still sits behind T.J. Hockenson and Jesse James on the depth chart, so don’t expect too much from the rookie against Green Bay.

S Bobby Price

Another undrafted rookie to make his NFL debut against Chicago, Price was given a substantial role on special teams right away. The safety, who was just elevated from the practice squad, saw the field for almost two-thirds of the Lions’ special teams snaps and made one tackle.

With fellow safety and core special teamer C.J. Moore questionable to play, Price may find himself in that role once again.

Detroit Lions elevate 3 practice squad players for their Week 14 game against the Packers

The Detroit Lions have elevated three members of their practice squad for their Week 14 matchup with the Green Bay Packers: Offensive tackle Dan Skipper, defensive end Kareem Martin, and safety/gunner Bobby Price.

The Detroit Lions have elevated three members of their practice squad for their Week 14 matchup with the Green Bay Packers: Offensive tackle Dan Skipper, defensive end Kareem Martin, and safety/gunner Bobby Price.

Typically, the Lions would only be able to elevate two players under the standard elevation addendum, but with Everson Griffen being placed on the COVID-19 list, the Lions are able to elevate a third player as a replacement.

With Tyrell Crosby being ruled out and Hal Vaitai on injured reserve, the Lions have turned to Matt Nelson at right tackle. With Joe Dahl as the only remaining player with tackle experience on the active roster, Skipper is being elevated as insurance against any further injuries at the position.

With a plethora of injuries amongst the Lions EDGE rushers, Martin is being called up for depth. While Romeo Okwara is healthy, the Lions are down Trey Flowers (IR), Griffen (COVID-19), and Julian Okwara (IR).

When the Lions deploy four down defensive lineman, they will most likely hope to turn to Da’Shawn Hand and/or Austin Bryant opposite Okwara, with Martin potentially being the fourth option. But both Hand and Bryant are listed as questionable this week and neither has played in three games, meaning Martin could find himself on the field fairly quickly.

Because of this uncertainty, the Lions may rely on their linebackers to fill an EDGE role and that would mean leaning on Jahlani Tavai, Christian Jones, and Reggie Ragland at the JACK linebacker role more.

Price was elevated last week and played on 19 special teams snaps, including as a starting gunner. With C.J. Moore questionable after injuring his ankle last week, Price should help soften Moore’s workload.

Lions Week 13 Rookie report: Late-round picks move into starting lineup

With injuries and opportunities rising, the Detroit Lions are leaning on late-round rookies Quintez Cephus and John Penisini to start.

The Detroit Lions are headed to Soldier Field short-handed to play the Chicago Bears in Week 13.

This marks the first game without coach Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn running the team and interim head coach Darell Bevell has a tough assignment ahead of him, as injuries plague the roster and the Lions sit with a losing record.

So how will all of this impact Detroit’s 2020 rookie class? Here’s what to expect from the rookies:

CB Jeff Okudah

The third-overall pick in 2020 has been ruled out once again this week as he deals with a lingering shoulder injury. Expect veteran Darryl Roberts to take his place as the second outside cornerback alongside Amani Oruwariye, with Justin Coleman primarily in the slot.

RB D’Andre Swift

The Lions’ star running back has had his rookie season hindered by injuries. Over the last two weeks, he has sat out of multiple practices due to a concussion (when has cleared) and illness. His official status for this game is ‘doubtful’ so don’t expect Swift to see the field in Chicago.

OL Jonah Jackson and Logan Stenberg

Overall, the Lions’ offensive line has been a bright spot on an otherwise struggling team.

Jackson will continue to start for Detroit at left guard. So far, the rookie out of Ohio State has committed just two penalties and allowed four sacks while playing as both right and left guard. Jackson may catch a break this week as several of Chicago’s starting defensive linemen have been sidelined from practices with various injuries.

Stenberg is on the back end of the Lions’ offensive line depth chart. He may be active this week due to the number of injured players on the active roster, but don’t expect the rookie to see the field.

WR Quintez Cephus

Cephus could be primed for a much bigger role this week following the release of wide receiver Marvin Hall.

While the rookie has seen more work in the slot, he should now take over as Detroit’s third or fourth receiver and could be used in the deep-threat role that Hall had before his release.

The rookie has 12 receptions for 174 yards on the season but has yet to find the endzone. With Kenny Golladay out and Marvin Hall no longer on the roster, Cephus could end up being the number two guy in Detroit behind Marvin Jones.

Expect a handful of receptions and a score from the rookie receiver against the Chicago Bears.

DL John Penisini

His role has already been increasing from week-to-week, and starting nose tackle Danny Shelton going to the injured reserve, Penisini will now assume the starting role for Detroit’s defensive line.

The rookie nose tackle has outperformed his draft position and shown versatility as a run stuffer and someone who could provide pressure form the interior of the line.

Against a struggling Chicago offensive line, expect big things from this rookie.

TE Hunter Bryant

Bryant recently got brought back to the active roster after a stint on injured reserve. The much-talked-about undrafted rookie impressed enough during training camp to make the initial roster and now will see his first action as an NFL player.

His role will be limited as he sits behind T.J. Hockenson and Jesse James, but the rookie could still see the field in certain offensive situations and could make his first career reception against the Bears.

S Bobby Price

Another undrafted rookie who could make his debut as a pro against Chicago, Price was elevated from the practice squad for this game. While he could provide depth at the safety position, but he is more likely to see the field on special teams.

Detroit Lions Week 13: Comprehensive depth chart
