On a smaller D-line, Rams’ loss of Bobby Brown III is a big one

The Rams’ defensive line was already lacking size, and now they’ve lost their biggest defender in Bobby Brown III

The Los Angeles Rams came into the season with a much smaller defensive line than they’ve had in recent years. Following the departures of A’Shawn Robinson and Greg Gaines, the unit up front lost not only two key players, but two of their largest players, too.

At 324 pounds, Bobby Brown III was the only defensive lineman over 300 pounds to start the season and in Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, their starting nose tackle went down with a knee injury. Brown is expected to miss 5-7 weeks with an MCL sprain, leaving the Rams without their space-eating defensive lineman.

Nose tackles don’t often rack up big numbers on the stat sheet and you might not think Brown was having a very productive season considering he only has 13 tackles and no sacks. However, his loss is a big one for the Rams, both literally and figuratively.

According to Pro Football Focus, Brown is the Rams’ fourth-highest-graded player on defense this season with a grade of 68.9. His run-defense grade of 66.6 is eighth-best on the team and his three total pressures are tied for the seventh-most.

The biggest concern with Brown out is a lack of size on the interior when it comes to defending the run. The Rams have Kobie Turner, who’s also gotten snaps at nose tackle, but only 46 compared to Brown’s 109. He’s also 36 pounds lighter than Brown and 2 inches shorter, so he doesn’t bring quite the same bulk to the interior of the line. Aaron Donald is the only other player to get snaps as a true nose tackle on defense this season.

If the Rams don’t plan to sign a true nose tackle to replace Brown, what they may have to do is make Turner a full-time nose tackle and give a player like Larrell Murchison more snaps at defensive tackle in place of Turner. That’s certainly not ideal, which emphasizes how big a loss Brown is for this group.

Fortunately, it wasn’t a season-ending injury like the Rams feared, but even being without Brown for 5-7 weeks will be a tough blow, especially with teams such as the Cowboys, Packers and Seahawks coming up on the schedule – teams that have talented running backs.

Sean McVay says Bobby Brown’s knee injury ‘didn’t look good’

Sean McVay provided an update on Rams’ Bobby Brown after he suffered a knee injury in Sunday’s loss to Eagles.

The Los Angeles Rams suffered a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and they took a hit to their defensive line in the process. Bobby Brown exited Sunday’s game with a knee injury and Sean McVay revealed in his post-game presser that he doesn’t believe the team will receive a positive update on the interior defender.

“With Bobby Brown, it didn’t look good with his knee,” McVay said.

Brown first sustained an elbow injury early in the game, but he would return for the Rams. Sadly, he would then suffer a knee injury late in the fourth quarter, forcing him to be carted off of the field.

Following the departure of Greg Gaines in free agency this past offseason, Brown has emerged as the starting nose tackle for the Rams this season. Before sustaining his knee injury, Brown had tallied 13 tackles and one tackle for loss this season.

With Brown waiting for a diagnosis on his knee ailment, rookie Kobie Turner and Larrell Murchison could see increased snaps at nose tackle. And there’s a chance the Rams could make a move for another nose tackle given the lack of size the team has in the interior.

Even with McVay’s comments, we are hoping for the best when it comes to Brown’s knee injury.

Rams’ 23 most important players for 2023 – No. 16: NT Bobby Brown III

Bobby Brown III might be the Rams’ only true nose tackle on the roster, which makes him a key piece of the defense

Since Ndamukong Suh left in 2019, the Los Angeles Rams have not sunk a lot of assets into the nose tackle position. Their last two starters at that position have been Sebastian Joseph-Day (sixth-round pick) and Greg Gaines (fourth-round pick), which worked out perfectly for L.A.

Next in line is Bobby Brown III, another former fourth-round pick who’s hoping to make the third-year leap. Brown has never been a starter before and has played just 19 games in his career, but he’s expected to be the Rams’ primary nose tackle as of now.

Assuming he replaces Gaines in the middle, Brown will end up being one of the team’s more important players, given the fact that they don’t really have a great backup option behind him right now.

These six underrated Rams have impressed Sean McVay in 2022

With the season winding to a close, Sean McVay pointed to these six players as guys who have made the most of their opportunities in 2022

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay faced serious adversity in 2022 as his team looked to defend their Super Bowl title and ended up with less-than-desirable results in the process. Not for lack of effort on his part, the Rams currently sit at 4-10 on the season and are starting to look to the future in the final weeks of the season.

He addressed the media on Wednesday at a team press conference and was asked about which players have stood out to him through all the trials and tribulations 2022 has brought for his team. Injuries have played a major factor for Los Angeles, so it was no surprise that the Rams’ depth players were the first that came to mind for him.

“I think when you look at it, I think a lot of those young defensive
linemen,” McVay explained. “I’ve been really pleased with [DT] Bobby Brown [III] and the way that he’s played. I think you’re seeing a lot of opportunities for [DT] Michael Hoecht and then even in the backend, it’s been really good to see guys like [DB] Cobie Durant and [DB] Russ Yeast, [DB] Quentin Lake got a chance to play for the first time, so those are the guys that would come to mind for me whereas a lot of the guys that…[RB] Kyren [Williams] is a guy we want to continue to be able to see. I think he’s done some good things with his opportunities, but those are the guys that come to mind for me.”

It is safe to say that McVay has kept his eye on players who might be able to help Los Angeles achieve a better record in 2023 as his team has suffered their share of defeat over the course of the season. In football, resilience in the face of hardship is a key to success, and McVay seems confident that the guys he has on his roster are capable of making that toughness their primary strength.

Rams waiting for MRI results on Bobby Brown III’s ankle after X-rays were clean

Bobby Brown III injured his ankle in the preseason opener and while the X-rays were clean, he will get an MRI

Rams nose tackle Bobby Brown III left the preseason opener in the second half with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury. He was helped off the field by trainers and was unable to put any weight on his right leg.

Sean McVay provided an update on Brown’s status and he sounds hopeful that the second-year defensive lineman avoided a long-term injury. Brown’s X-rays were clean but the team is waiting on the MRI results to get further clarity on the severity.

“We’re waiting on his MRI,” McVay said. “The X-rays did come back good. There was nothing on the X-rays, but sometimes with those ankles – it was his ankle that did get rolled up on – and I know from previous experience myself when I played that sometimes even if you don’t have an actual fracture, depending on the significance of what you do with a sprain and how it shows up with the ligaments and tendons can almost be just as bad. But we’re hoping for the best.”

Brown flashed a few times in the win, recording two tackles and one sack against the Chargers. He played 30 snaps, or 47%, before exiting the game with the ankle injury.

UPDATE: McVay said after practice Monday that Brown does not need surgery.

Rams hopeful Bobby Brown will be OK after injuring ankle vs. Chargers

Bobby Brown appeared to injure his ankle badly against the Chargers, but Sean McVay believes he’s going to be OK

The Rams almost escaped their preseason opener unscathed, but nose tackle Bobby Brown left the game in the second half with what appeared to be a very painful ankle injury.

Brown had his right ankle rolled up on and was in visible pain. After coming to his feet, he was helped off the field by trainers and was putting almost no pressure on his right leg.

Sean McVay provided an initial update after the game, saying he believes Brown will be OK after talking to head trainer Reggie Scott. But McVay wants to wait for the final results before making an official designation.

“I think he’s gonna be OK. Other than just talking to Reggie initially, we’ll wait and see exactly, but he was somewhat optimistic. But I want to wait before I get the final results,” he said.

Brown has been suspended for the first six games of the regular season, but he’s eligible for the preseason, so these are critical games for him as he fights to make the roster once his suspension is lifted.

4 defensive linemen the Rams could sign to provide depth in 2022

With Bobby Brown suspended, the Rams need some additional depth on the defensive line. They should consider signing one of these four free agents.

The Los Angeles Rams boast a formidable starting defensive line unit that features Aaron Donald, Greg Gaines, and A’Shawn Robinson. But behind Donald, Gaines, and Robinson, the Rams are lacking depth along the defensive front.

The lack of depth stems from Sebastian Joseph-Day departing in free agency, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers. The recent news of Bobby Brown being suspended for the first six games of the upcoming campaign due to a PED violation hurts the depth even more, leaving the defensive line thin.

With the Rams needing some help on the defensive line, here are four players they should consider signing ahead of the 2022 season.

Rams DL Bobby Brown suspended 6 games for PED violation

The NFL has suspended Rams DL Bobby Brown III 6 games for violating the performance enhancing drug policy

The Los Angeles Rams will be without defensive lineman Bobby Brown for the first six games of the regular season. He violated the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs and has been suspended without pay for six games.

Brown can still participate in training camp and all preseason games but he will not be on the 53-man roster for the start of the season. The Rams selected him in the fourth round of last year’s draft out of Texas A&M.

Brown played in 10 games last season but made just one tackle, playing 22 total snaps on defense. He was expected to be the Rams’ fourth or fifth defensive lineman on the depth chart but will now have to wait until Week 8 to play due to the team’s Week 7 bye.

5 younger Rams players who could take a leap forward in 2022

Robert Rochell and Brycen Hopkins are two younger players who could have bigger roles with the Rams next season.

When the Los Angeles Rams add rookies in the draft, they don’t typically expect them to contribute in a big way in Year 1. Les Snead and Sean McVay like to draft a year or two in advance, knowing those players will be asked to step up eventually after starters depart in free agency.

For these five players, that time could be now.

The Rams will need players to step up after the team suffered several free-agent losses, creating voids on the roster. These five younger players could take a leap forward in 2022 thanks to potentially bigger roles.
