As the Eagles work to get under the salary cap, the team just announced that they’ve parted ways with safety Blake Countess, and defensive tackle, Treyvon Hester.

Hester was selected in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders and signed with the Eagles practice squad after being waived during training camp.

Hester was set to make $920,000 this season, a figure the Eagles will now save.

Hester has spent time with Washington, Green Bay, and the Eagles over the past three seasons, and will be best remembered for blocking Cody Parkey’s Double Doink’ 43-yard field goal attempt.

Browns hold tryouts for 7 players

A former XFL star with a Browns past is among the 7 trying out for the Browns on Wednesday

The last day of September provided an opportunity for seven current NFL free agents to show what they’ve got for the Cleveland Browns. The team held a formal tryout for a group of players on Wednesday, as reported on the NFL’s transaction wire.

The seven free agents invited to the audition in Berea:

Blake Countess – CB

Jordan Franks – TE

DeMarquis Gates – LB

Javon Leake – RB

DaMarkus Lodge – WR

Jared Rice – TE

Prince Smith – CB

Notable among the tryouts is Countess, who plays cornerback but also worked as a return specialist at both Michigan and Auburn in college. Gates was once briefly a Brown in the past, signing as an undrafted free agent with the team following the 2018 NFL Draft. He did not make it past rookie minicamp that year, but had an impressive turn in the XFL.

Jets release S Blake Countess, save $1.2 million in cap space

The Jets have released Blake Countess and saved $1.2 million in cap space.

The Jets saved a little money on Wednesday, releasing safety Blake Countess. In doing so, the team cleared $1.2 million in cap space, per OverTheCap.

Countess was signed by the Jets in October and was active for six games. However, he didn’t record any statistics in 2019.

Countess was a sixth-round pick by the Eagles in 2016 out of Auburn. He didn’t play any games with the Eagles, though, as he was cut before the start of the 2016 season. The Rams picked him up after that; he was in Los Angeles for three seasons.

As a Ram, Countess had 54 total tackles, three pass defenses, two interceptions and one sack in 37 total games. He made one more stop in Philadelphia before coming to the Jets in 2019.

Jets S Jamal Adams won’t rush back from ankle injury

Jest safety Jamal Davis will likely be out on Sunday against the Dolphins with an ankle sprain.

Jets safety Jamal Adams will likely miss his first NFL game on Sunday against the Dolphins.

Adams suffered an ankle sprain last week early in the game against the Bengals but played through it. He was in a walking boot after the game. On Monday, an MRI revealed that Adams sprained his ankle and he is now week-to-week.

Now, Adams won’t put himself on the field until he feels he is fully ready.

“I’m not going to get out there until I’m myself,” Adams told reporters. “I don’t know when that is. We’re not going to put a timetable on it.”

Adam Gase said on Tuesday that it is not a high-ankle sprain, so it’s not as bad as it could’ve been. Given how much Adams moves around the line of scrimmage, though, he can’t afford to play on a bum ankle. The burst that Adams gets is one of the reasons why he is so explosive around the football.

Keep in mind that Adams is also eligible for a massive payday this offseason, so there’s no sense in him rushing back.

It’s been another amazing year for the third-year safety, as he leads the team in most defensive statistics. Adams is the team leader in tackles (64), sacks (6.5), tackles for loss (11.5), pass defenses (6) and forced fumbles (2).

With Adams likely down for Sunday, the Jets will turn to backup safety Blake Countess. They also claimed Bennett Jackson off waivers this week, so he could see some playing time as well.
