Xavier Worthy and Isaiah Neyor named to Biletnikoff Award watch list

Texas’ wide receiver duo of Worthy and Neyor has the chance to be special.

Texas wide receiver duo Xavier Worthy and Isaiah Neyor have been named to the 2022 Biletnikoff Award watch list. An honor given to the best pass catcher in college football.

Worthy is entering the new season with tons of expectations after establishing himself as one the nation’s best wide receivers in 2021. The Calif. product had the best freshman season a Longhorn wideout has ever had. He hauled in 62 passes for 981 yards and 12 touchdowns, writing his name in Texas record books.

A major goal for Texas heading into this offseason was finding another talented pass catcher to pair with Worthy. Former Wyoming standout Isaiah Neyor is ready to fill that role.

Neyor is back in his home state of Texas after a breakout season with the Cowboys a year ago. It felt like every time he touched the ball it was an explosive play. Neyor totaled 878 yards and 12 touchdowns on an impressive 19.95 yards per catch clip.

Worthy and Neyor are already being tabbed as one of the best wide receiver duos in the country. They have the opportunity to take the Texas offense to the next level.

Burks’ omission from consideration for Biletnikoff Award is a travesty

Treylon Burks is one of the 10 best wide receivers in the country, but not according to the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.

Treylon Burks is one of the top football players in the country.

He is definitely one of the ten best wide receivers in America.

So when the ten semifinalists were announced on Monday, Burks’ name was nowhere to be found.

It’s not that the players named to the list weren’t deserving.

But Burks deserves to be on the list.

For the season, Burks has 52 catches for 815 yards and 8 touchdowns, when everyone around the nation knows he is the top threat on the team and there hasn’t been a true No. 2 guy emerge.

No offense to Deven Thompkins and Jerreth Sterns, they’ve put up video game numbers this year for their respective teams.

Let’s be real though, those guys would not be doing that against SEC competition.

Sterns has faced one Power 5 team. He torched the Michigan State secondary in a loss to the tune of 17 catches for 186 yards and a touchdown.

Thompkins has played one ranked team (BYU) and had a solid outing, 9 catches for 125 yards and a score.

Burks doesn’t need the accolades. He will most likely be a first round NFL draft pick in April.

It would just be nice for the program and the state, being that he is an in-state product, to have some recognition.

That’s all.

Alabama’s Jameson Williams named semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award

Alabama star WR Jameson Williams was been named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top pass catcher!

Jameson Williams has been one of the pleasant surprises for the Tide this season. The Ohio State transfer was expected to be a contributor, but as far as I am concerned, he has exceeded all expectations.

This is evident by the news that was released yesterday that Williams was named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award.

The Biletnikoff is giving to the nation’s top pass catcher.

On the season, Williams has 51 receptions for 1,028 yards and 10 touchdowns. His ability to make the big play is what has separated him from some of the other top targets in the country. Williams has at least one catch of 50 or more yards in six out of nine games against FBS opponents.

Let’s see if Williams can continue his big production for the Tide down the stretch!

Jahan Dotson named semifinalist for Biletnikoff Award

Jahan Dotson is now a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, for the nation’s top receiver

Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson is one step closer to bringing the Biletnikoff Award back to Happy Valley. On Monday, Dotson was named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, which is awarded to the nation’s top receiver in college football.

In all, the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation revealed a total of 10 of the nation’s top receivers as semifinalists for this year’s award. Dotson was one of three Big Ten receivers to appear on the list. Purdue’s David Bell and Ohio State’s Chris Olave joined Dotson representing the Big Ten on the Biletnikoff Award semifinalists list.

Dotson is also a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, which was announced last week. Dotson is the only receiver to be named a semifinalist for the Walt Camp Award.

Here’s a look at this year’s semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award.

2021 Biletnikoff Award semifinalists

  • Jordan Addison, Pitt
  • David Bell, Purdue
  • Jahan Dotson, Penn State
  • Josh Downs, North Carolina
  • Drake London, USC
  • Chris Olave, Ohio State
  • A.T. Perry, Wake Forest
  • Jerreth Sterns, Western Kentucky
  • Deven Thompkins, Utah State
  • Jameson Williams, Alabama

The Biletnikoff Award is awarded to college football’s top receiver, which is defined as any player who catches a pass and is not restricted to just wide receivers. This is a relatively new expansion of the criteria for the award. Of course, no player playing a position other than wide receiver has been able to take home the Biletnikoff Award yet.

Last year’s Biletnikoff Award winner was DeVonta Smith of Alabama, who also won the Heisman Trophy and went on to be a first-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dotson will look to bring the Biletnikoff Award back to Happy Valley for the first time since the award was originally presented to former Nittany Lion Bobby Engram in 1994.

Texas WR Xavier Worthy named to Biletnikoff Award watch list

Star freshman Xavier Worthy has been recognized as one of the top receivers in college football.

Even with Texas’ season not going nearly as planned, their star freshman receiver has been making waves in Austin.

Xavier Worthy has been the best player on the offensive side of the ball outside of running back Bijan Robinson. He has been the lone bright spot in a receiver group that has been as inconsistent as they come all season.

Worthy’s stellar freshman campaign has rightfully earned him recognition as one of the top receivers in college football. On Wednesday, he was named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, which honors the season’s most outstanding FBS receiver.

Worthy has certainly earned the right to be in this discussion. He has posted 33 catches for 657 yards, seven touchdowns, while averaging an impressive 19.9 yards per catch.

He is on pace to break multiple Texas records for a freshman receiver, as he is just 242 yards away from breaking Roy Williams’ record for most receiving yards by a freshman. His seven touchdowns are also just two shy of Williams’ record for most touchdown catches by a freshman in school history.

With four games left in the regular season, and a possible bowl game on the horizon, it is seeming very likely that Worthy will be able to reach these marks, and potentially blow them out of the water.

‘We’ve got some future Biletnikoff winners:’ Trio of freshmen WRs showing out at Oregon camp

The three freshmen receivers have incredible upside, and their performance throughout Oregon’s fall camp has been impossible to ignore.

Coming into the 2021 season, the Oregon Ducks were sporting a trio of 4-star recruits at the wide receiver position, and there were some high hopes that they could potentially get onto the field early in their freshman seasons, getting a jump start on their college careers.

After almost two weeks of fall camp, those expectations have been blown out of the water. Now it’s not a question of whether or not any of these receivers can see the field in 2021, but rather a wonder of how big of an impact they can ultimately have.

With Troy Franklin, Dont’e Thornton, and Isaiah Brevard all vying for meaningful playing time in the offense, the Ducks have as good of a problem as they can ask for.

“They’re hard workers, you know they’re technicians and they really want to take the coaching points and put it on the field,” said super-senior WR Johnny Johnson III after Thursday’s practice. “I love the way those dudes work, and they’re going to continue to be great. I think we’ve got some future Biletnikoff winners over here.”

[lawrence-related id=5710]

The Biletnikoff Award, given to the best WR in college football for that season, has never been won by an Oregon Duck, but Demetrius Williams was a semifinalist in both 2004 and 2005.

The majority of the spotlight this fall has been on both Franklin and Thornton, due to their already high name recognition with the fanbase. Both freshmen were able to enroll early at Oregon and participate in the spring game, where they surely turned heads. The two led the team in receiving on the day, with Franklin hauling in four catches for 93 yards and Thorton adding 3 catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.

“I think with Dont’e and Troy, the fact that they’ve been here since January, so they’ve had the whole spring and those guys have done a good job of making plays,” said Offensive Coordinator Joe Moorhead. “And Isaiah has come in with the rest of the other freshmen, and he’s actually — we’ve got to get him up to speed on what to do — but he’s made a lot of plays and caught a lot of touchdowns in camp. Between the three of those guys, it’s as impressive of a true freshman recruiting class as I’ve been around in a long time.”

[lawrence-related id=5450]

Fans may not have been too familiar with Brevard before fall camp started, but the freshman has done a good job of getting up to speed with the rest of the guys. In Oregon’s first scrimmage of fall camp, which was open to season-ticket holders, Brevard caught the only touchdown of the day in 11-vs-11 drills, hauling in a 38-yard pass from QB Robby Ashford. Brevard also had two other catches on the drive to set up the score.

“He has all of the physical abilities,” Johnson said of Brevard. “I think at the beginning, the playbook was kind of the biggest thing for him to figure out, and I think he’s starting to tighten up on that. He’s continued to make plays. He made a lot of plays in the last scrimmage, and he’s going to continue to do that.”

[lawrence-related id=5712]

With so many veteran and experienced receivers ahead of them on the depth chart, it may be hard to crack the starting lineup for any of these freshmen. With Johnson, and Mycah Pittman, and Jaylon Redd, and Devon Williams all jockeying for touches, there could simply be too much talent on the field to get everyone the targets that they deserve.

At a position group where the Ducks have historically underachieved over the years, that sounds like a great problem to have.

Penn State’s Jahan Dotson named to Biletnikoff Award watch list

Another day, another award watch list for Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson.

Another day, another watch list for Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson. While Dotson was representing Penn State at Big Ten media day in Indianapolis, he was named to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.

Dotson was the Big Ten’s leading receiver in receiving yardage with 884 yards in nine games during the 2020 season. He also led the Big Ten with eight touchdowns. It is worth noting Dotson also played in more games than most receivers around the Big Ten, but he was third in the conference in average receiving yards per game (98.2) and he was among the Big Ten’s leaders in average yards per reception (17.0).

You can check out the entire Biletnikoff Award watch list here. Players can be added to the watch list as the season progresses.

Dotson was previously named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award for the nation’s top college football player.

Chris Olave and Garret Wilson on Biletnikoff preseason watch list

Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson are looking for big seasons this year and both are on the Preseason Biletnikoff watch list.

We’ve got another college football preseason award watch list making the rounds and two more Ohio State players are appearing.

The fine folks at the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation released the 2021 preseason Biletnikoff Award watch list and both Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson are a part of the 51 names appearing.

The Biletnikoff Award has been around since 1994 and goes to the college football player judged to be the most outstanding FBS receiver in the nation annually regardless of position. And as an added bonus, two-time Heisman winner and Ohio State legend Archie Griffin will help present the award at this year’s banquet to be held on March 6, 2022.

Olave is coming back for his senior season and is a big-play receiver. He has an outside shot at becoming the Buckeyes’ all-time leader in career receiving yards. Wilson will be a junior and has also shown an ability to make big plays down the field. The duo is considered one of the best in all of college football, and only a shortened season probably kept them off Biletnikoff consideration last year.

Only one Ohio State player has won the Biletnikoff. The late, great, Terry Glenn took home the award in that remarkable one-year season he had in 1995.

Projecting the top Candidates for the Biletnikoff Award in 2021

With award watch lists dropping, who are the favorites to win the Biletnikoff Award in 2021?

With announcements being made this week naming the nation’s top players going into the 2022 season, unsurprisingly, many Oklahoma players are making shortlists for awards.

Just like every other list, I expect multiple Sooners to be named on the Biletnikoff shortlist.

Jadon Haselwood

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Coming in as the nation’s fourth-ranked player in the 2019 class, expectations were high for Haselwood to be the Sooners’ next great wideout. Unfortunately, after suffering what coaches described as a “freak injury” to his leg in April 2020, he could not play most of the 2020 season.

Haselwood featured in three games in 2020, making four receptions for 65 yards. That being said, he had a productive freshman season, snagging 19 receptions for 272 yards and a touchdown.

Now that he’s back to full strength, I expect him to be listed as a potential Biletnikoff watchlist player.

Marvin Mims

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

After a terrific freshman season in which Mims caught 37 receptions for 610 yards and nine touchdowns, he was named to both the Rivals and 247Sports Freshman All-American list.

The Football Writers Association also had Mims as a Freshman All-American. I fully expect Mims to be one of the first names on the list on Thursday.

Florida tight end Pitts the favorite to win this postseason award

Kyle Pitts is one of 3 finalists for both the John Mackey Award for the best tight end and the Biletnikoff Award for the top pass-catcher.

[jwplayer Xrm3URhk]

Florida tight end Kyle Pitts has the opportunity to bring home some hardware tonight. The standout player and likely first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is nominated for two awards tonight at the Home Depot College Football Awards.

Pitts is one of three finalists for both the John Mackey award, given to the nation’s best tight end, and the Biletnikoff Award, which is given to the top pass-catcher in the country. Pitts is the first player to be nominated for both since Chase Coffman, the 2008 winner of the Mackey.

Though Heisman Trophy-winning receiver Devonta Smith is all but guaranteed to take home the Biletnikoff, ESPN’s Mark Schlabach thinks Pitts is the favorite to win the Mackey over finalists Charlie Kolar from Iowa State and Jalen Wydermyer from Texas A&M. Here’s what he said about this year’s race for the Mackey.

Who should win: Pitts. He was a matchup nightmare for any defense he faced because of his height, speed and length. He was PFF’s top-rated tight end with a 96.2 overall grade, finishing with 43 receptions for 770 yards with 12 touchdowns. He didn’t have a drop in 65 targets and 39 of his catches were for first downs.

Who will win: Pitts

Pitts is the first Florida finalist for the Mackey since Aaron Hernandez in 2009, who won the award.
