Recent changes from the NCAA may pave way for Ohio State Michigan rematch

The NCAA has effectively eliminated the need for conference divisions. Could the Big Ten make a change resulting in the chance for …

As college football fans, we all want to see the best possible games, don’t we? We’re tuned in anytime Ohio State takes the field, but marquee matchups reach an entirely different level… I mean who else has snuck in an earbud after cousin Sally didn’t look at the football schedule prior to setting a date for her wedding?

Well, family drama aside, recent changes from the NCAA have relaxed restrictions on FBS conference championship games. No longer do the championship game participants have to be from separate divisions, allowing the conference to put in the two teams with the best record.

This means that last year, at 7-1 in conference play, Ohio State would’ve received a shot to avenge the loss to Michigan a week later in Indianapolis. Instead, we got to see an overmatched Iowa team. Not to take anything away from the Hawkeyes, but they did have two losses in conference play. Most Buckeye fans believe the outcome might have been different on a neutral site with no weather to deal with and I’m sure Wolverine fans would beg to differ.

Of course, this ruling wouldn’t just affect the biggest rivalry in football. How about the year before that when Indiana fans felt they got jobbed out of playing for a Big Ten Championship? With the new NCAA ruling, the Hoosiers would have got their shot at a rematch with Ohio State. Same story in 2019 as Penn State would have got the nod over Wisconsin.

It didn’t take long to see changes already taking place. The Pac-12 has already made changes to put the two best teams in the conference championship, effectively making divisions obsolete.

Will the Big Ten and others follow suit? We don’t know exactly what the conference will do, but changes are bound to be coming. And it may result in getting a second matchup with TTUN as a result.

Big Ten announces football and basketball championship game venues through 2024

A look at the host sites for the Big Ten basketball and football championships through 2024

On Wednesday, the Big Ten released the schedule for upcoming championship games in both football and basketball.

The venues are staying mostly the same, although there is a new city in the mix. Minnesota is now one of the sites for Big Ten basketball, as the Target Center will become a host arena.

Lucas Oil Stadium has been the home of the football championship game, and will remain the home through 2024. After that date, the state of Wisconsin could host the Big Ten championship game.

The Packers submitted Lambeau Field as a possible host site for 2025 and the 2027-2030 seasons.

Here is a look at where the basketball and football championship games will be through 2024:

So what does the schedule look like and what venues can you plan your trips around? Here are some quotes from the league on the announcement and what you can expect through 2024.

Are you excited about the prospects of visiting the Twin Cities in the near future for one of the basketball tournaments?

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud makes history with conference awards

C.J. Stroud has made history in the Big Ten Conference. #GoBucks

Replacing an Ohio State legend like Justin Fields wouldn’t be easy for anyone. However, C.J. Stroud won the starting job to be the signal-caller for the Buckeyes and didn’t look back. After playing through the pain of an injured shoulder early in the season, Stroud came back to lead the No. 1 ranked offense in the country.

Big Ten voters took notice and named Stroud the Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year, the Griese-Breese Quarterback of the Year, and the Thompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year. It is the first time in the illustrious history of the Big Ten conference that a player has won all three awards in the same season.

Having great talent around the freshman certainly helped ease the learning curve, but ultimately the quarterback has to get the ball where it needs to be. And Stroud did that all season long. In playing 11 of the 12 games, Stroud threw for 3,862 yards with 38 touchdowns and only five interceptions, while completing over 70 percent of his passes.

No matter how you slice it, those are impressive stats, especially for a kid who had never thrown a pass in a college game before this season.

Stroud is almost certain to get an invite to New York City as a Heisman Trophy finalist. Unfortunately, he will not have another game to make his case to take home the most coveted individual award in college football.

Voters will be making their decision after conference championship games and the Heisman winner will be announced on December 11 on ESPN.

Haskell Garrett is a first-team all-Big Ten performer. #GoBucks

Haskell Garrett, the heart and soul of the Ohio State defense, has been named First-Team All-Conference. The Big Ten announced the defensive all-conference performers earlier today as the players were voted on by conference coaches as well as members of the media.

Garrett came back to OSU after many thought he would leave for the NFL upon completion of the 2020 season. The defensive tackle was named a captain, being recognized as a leader on the team.

Big No. 92 led the Buckeyes with 5.5 sacks and was tied for the team lead with Zach Harrison with seven total tackles for loss.

Other Buckeyes on the defensive side of the ball to earn all-conference honors were Zach Harrison, Tyreke Smith, and Ronnie Hickman all earning second-team, while true freshman Denzel Burke garnered third-team honors.

Eight Buckeyes were named honorable mention which included Sevyn Banks, Cam Brown, Steele Chambers, Tommy Eichenberg, Antwuan Jackson, Bryson Shaw, Taron Vincent, and Tyliek Williams.

Noah Ruggles was named the Big Ten’s second-team all-Big Ten kicker and true freshman Emeka Egbuka was named honorable mention as a kick returner.

The Big Ten will announce the all-conference performers on the offensive side of the ball Wednesday, December 1.

Who is the highest-paid head football coach in the Big Ten?

Who are the highest-paid coaches in the Big Ten conference?

Earlier today, USA TODAY Sports updated their annual college football coaches salary database with salaries for 122 FBS coaches.

It should come as no surprise that Alabama head coach Nick Saban topped the charts, earning a total of $9,753,211 for the year. While the Big Ten did not have a coach in the top 5, a number of Big Ten coaches were in the upper tier of salaries according to the database.

Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst recently earned a nearly one million dollar raise that was agreed upon before the season. Where does the Badger coach’s salary rank among other Big Ten coaches? Here is a look at every Big Ten coaches salary as provided by the database:*

Report: Big Ten has ‘little to no interest’ in expanding conference

The Big Ten is reportedly expressing “little to no interest” in conference expansion

The Big Ten isn’t looking to expand at this time, according to Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports.

Conference expansion and realignment has been a huge topic in the past week, with Texas and Oklahoma expected to leave the Big 12 to join the Southeastern Conference. This move has sparked a bunch of chatter on what other moves could occur — including numerous teams expressing interest in the joining the Big Ten. However, that is reportedly something the league isn’t interested in at this time.

Wetzel tweeted on Monday night that he’s hearing “little to no interest in expansion” from his Big Ten sources. He added that the league is in talks with the Pac 12 on a potential non-conference rotating schedule agreement.

Here’s the full tweet from Wetzel below:

Wetzel also debunked the wild rumor that Ohio State and Michigan were in “serious contact” with the SEC on joining the conference. That was something I personally was always skeptical about — but it was at least an interesting rumor.

We will have to wait and see if things change from what Wetzel is hearing, and if the league does in fact look to add a few teams. I wouldn’t be shocked either way at this point.
