Michigan State hockey traveling to Wisconsin, set to play for Big Ten Championship

MSU heads to Wisconsin for a weekend series with a Big Ten Championship on the line:

The biggest hockey series of the season is coming on the last weekend of the year, and Michigan State is gearing up for a war to win the Big Ten regular season championship.

Michigan State enters the series up two points on Wisconsin, with two games to play inside of the Kohl Center this weekend.

If the Spartans get two points, the two teams will be co-champions. If the Spartans earn three points, or more, they are outright champions. In the event the team’s are co-champions, MSU would earn the 1-seed in the Big Ten Tournament. One point or less, Wisconsin takes home the Big Ten crown.

The first game of the series will take place on Friday at 9 p.m., while Saturday’s game will also be at 9 p.m., both on Big Ten Network Plus.

Jim Harbaugh sprinted away from his Gatorade bath after Michigan won the Big Ten

Jim Harbaugh said no thanks to the Gatorade bath.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh had plenty of things to celebrate after his Wolverines won the Big Ten championship game over Iowa, but a Gatorade bath wasn’t one of them.

As the clock ticked down to zero and Michigan sealed a 26-0 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes, a couple of Wolverines grabbed the Gatorade container and tried to soak Harbaugh in a victory shower.

Well, Harbaugh was absolutely having none of it as he sprinted away and somehow avoided getting drenched. Like, he didn’t just playfully jog away before accepting his soaking fate.

He booked it out of there like the last thing he was going to do was be covered in Gatorade.

Look, we get it. Gatorade baths are not the most enjoyable ways to celebrate winning your conference, even if they are absolutely ceremonial in sports.

Harbaugh clearly wasn’t ready to be covered in Gatorade for the rest of the night, and he somehow won both the Big 10 and his sprint to stay dry for all of the postgame festivities.

MSU has clinched the 2023 Big Ten Championship, their second straight title:

Michigan State women’s soccer has just clinched the 2023 Big Ten Regular Season Championship, their back to back Big Ten championship after winning the crown in 2022.

In 2023, the Spartans held a 12-3-3 record overall, but a 7-1-2 record inside the conference on their way to the championship.

As the one seed in the Big Ten Tournament, the Spartans will face off Iowa on their quest for a conference tournament championship.

LOOK: One writer picks Michigan State hockey to win Big Ten Conference

One writer is picking Michigan State to win the Big Ten in 2023-24:

The Adam Nightingale era of Michigan State hockey has taken off and it is running in full swing as he enters his second season. The Spartans have a lot of hype heading into the second year of Nightingale, and rightfully so, as the head man in East Lansing has brought in a ton of talent via the transfer portal and recruiting.

James Murray of Everything College Hockey is buying into the hype, stating that he believes the Spartans are set to win the regular season Big Ten championship:

WATCH: CFB Report shares highlight reel from legendary game

With Badger fans already on the edge of their seats ahead of the 2023 season, the College Football Report got them even more fired up Friday.

With Badger fans already on the edge of their seats ahead of the 2023 season, the College Football Report got them even more fired up Friday. They tweeted out a highlight reel from Wisconsin’s 70-31 Big Ten Championship victory over Nebraska.

In that contest, three legendary running backs (Montee Ball, James White, Melvin Gordon) produced some insane stat lines, as seen below. All three of the athletes went on to the NFL, two of which, White (3x) and Gordon (2023) have won Super Bowls.

Ball-carriers like these guys have made it hard to ignore Wisconsin as the potential “running back university” and stars like Jonathan Taylor and Braelon Allen have followed in their footsteps in recent years.

Where does Wisconsin rank in all-time Big Ten Championships?

Where does Wisconsin rank all-time in Big Ten titles?

College football seems to drastically change by the year, with high-profile programs moving conferences, new playoff formats and a recruiting calendar that never stays stagnant. One thing that persists through the sport’s changes: the record books.

That is said with an asterisk, as college athletics are somehow the only sporting entity to consistently vacate wins and championships based on wrongdoings. In many cases, Reggie Bush’s Heisman for one, the wins and awards are vacated for things that are now legal today!

That’s a rant for another day. The point I was making above is the history books will always exist, no matter how many Big Ten titles UCLA brings home in the next few decades.

So with USC and UCLA set to join the conference in 2024, with divisions on the way out and with an entirely new landscape across the sport, I thought it would be a good time to review the ranking of all-time Big Ten Championships.

Iowa Women’s Basketball: Head coach Lisa Bluder embracing high expectations

Coming off of a Big Ten regular season title and Big Ten tournament championship, expectations are high for Iowa’s Women’s Basketball team.

Coming off of a 24-8 season which saw the Iowa Hawkeyes Women’s Basketball team win the Big Ten regular season title and the Big Ten conference championship there is plenty of reason for the expectations to be high heading into the 2022-23 women’s college basketball season.

The Hawkeyes are entering this year as one of, if not the favorite, to win the Big Ten again as they return superstar guard Caitlin Clark and experience. Twelve members of the roster have collegiate experience and that will bode well for Iowa.

Today, at Big Ten Media Day gearing up for basketball season, Iowa’s head coach of the women’s team, Lisa Bluder discussed the upcoming year and taking on high expectations.

“We’re coming off a historic year. First time ever in the history of our program that we won both the Big Ten regular season and the Big Ten Tournament. We have every reason to have high expectations for this upcoming season. We have experience, offense, a great schedule, and we have a great fanbase. It’s going to be a fun year for the Iowa Hawkeyes,” Bluder said at Big Ten Media Days.

That schedule gets underway on October 28th as the Hawkeyes host Nebraska-Kearney in an exhibition before getting into their non-conference schedule. The Hawkeyes have 16 games that will be broadcast across Big Ten Network, FOX, FS1, ESPN networks, or ABC.

Their non-conference schedule includes an appearance in the Phil Knight Legacy College Basketball Tournament which includes Iowa, Oregon State, Duke, and Connecticut to round out an extremely talented field.

College Football Conference Championship Games Without Divisions. What Would’ve Happened?

College football conferences without divisions? What would the championship games have been without them?

College football conferences are starting to do away with divisions. How would the conference championship games have been if there weren’t the division formats?

College Football Conference Championships Without Divisions – What Would They Have Been?

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

The NCAA said it was cool for conferences to ditch the division formats when it comes to the championship games. Going forward – if conferences want to – the championships can be between the two top teams by conference winning percentage.

The Big 12 was already there, the Pac-12 jumped at the chance, and the Mountain West followed suit. Others are sure to do the same soon.

So how would college football history have been rewritten if the conference championship games didn’t have divisions?

As you’d expect – and as it’ll likely be going forward – the big winners were the powerhouse teams that had one bad day against the division rival.

Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Clemson, Florida, Alabama, Oregon – all would’ve been in a lot more conference championships, and there wouldn’t have been as many out-of-the-blue one-hit wonder teams getting in.

Here’s what would’ve happened in each conference championship had there not been divisions.

No Division Conference Championships: What Would’ve Happened?

Mountain West | Pac-12 | SEC | Sun Belt

ACC Conference Championship: What Would’ve Happened Without Divisions

Everything worked out fine lately, but there was a long stretch when just about everyone was in the ACC title hunt. It all worked in the divisional format, but it would’ve been insane for a few seasons without them. The tie-breakers would’ve been brain-melting in a few of the years.

The years when the championship would’ve been different without divisions are in bold, and the ones when the matchup would’ve been what actually happened aren’t. The records are for the regular season conference season only.

2021 Pitt 45, Wake Forest 21

2020 Clemson 34, Notre Dame 10
This was 1 vs 2 – ACC had no divisions

2019 Clemson 62, Virginia 17

2018 Clemson 42, Pitt 10

2017 Clemson 38, Miami 3

2016 Clemson 42, Virginia Tech 35
No Divisions Championship: Clemson vs Louisville
Lamar Jackson and 7-1 Louisville would’ve had another shot at 7-1 Clemson after losing the first time around in a 42-36 thriller. Virginia Tech was 6-2.

2015 Clemson 45, North Carolina 37

2014 Florida State 37, Georgia Tech 35

2013 Florida State 45, Duke 7
No Divisions Championship: Florida State vs Clemson
The Duke thing was fun – it was 6-2 – but it would’ve been a high-powered rematch of the 8-0 Seminoles and 7-1 Clemson.

2012 Florida State 21, Georgia Tech 15
No Divisions Championship: Florida State vs Clemson
Clemson’s only ACC loss was to 7-1 FSU. Georgia Tech was 5-3.

2011 Clemson 38, Virginia Tech 10

2010 Virginia Tech 44, Florida State 33

2009 Georgia Tech 39, Clemson 34
No Divisions Championship: Georgia Tech vs Virginia Tech
This would’ve been debatable. 7-1 Georgia Tech was a lock, but 6-2 Clemson and 6-2 Virginia Tech didn’t play each other and both lost to the Yellow Jackets. This likely would’ve come down to overall record or ranking. The Hokies would’ve received the very questionable call.

2008 Virginia Tech 30, Boston College 12
No Divisions Championship: Boston College vs Georgia Tech
Tis would’ve been an ugly mess, but it would’ve been a fascinating race. Duke was 1-7 and Virginia was 3-5, but six teams were 4-4 and in it until late, and Boston College, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech all went 5-3. Out of the four 5-3 teams, the Yellow Jackets and Eagles each had only one loss among the group, the Hokies and Seminoles each had two.

2007 Virginia Tech 30, Boston College 16

2006 Wake Forest 9, Georgia Tech 6
No Divisions Championship: Georgia Tech vs Virginia Tech
America might have been spared from the game that actually happened. Georgia Tech would’ve been in at 7-1, but 6-2 Virginia Tech beat 6-2 Wake Forest.

2005 Florida State 27, Virginia Tech 22
No Divisions Championship: Virginia Tech vs Miami
The Bobby Bowden ACC Championship narrative wouldn’t have happened. FSU was 5-3, so it would’ve been 6-2 Miami against 7-1 Virginia Tech.

Nebraska athlete named “Field Athlete of the Championships”

A Nebraska athlete who won became the first Husker to accomplish this since 2004!!

On Wednesday, a Nebraska track and field athlete was named the Big Ten Men’s Field Athlete of the Championships. Max Otterdahl won both the shot put with a throw of 64-8 and the discus with a throw of 190-11 at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships over the weekend. Otterdahl is the first Husker since Carl Myerscough at the 2004 Big 12 Championships to win the shot put, and discus at the same championship meet.

Otterdahl is the third Husker to win Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships in two seasons. He joins 2021 indoor shot put champion Burger Lambrechts, and Alex Talley won the weight throw and finished second in the shot put. Otterdahl will now prepare for the NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships preliminary meets, one for the east region and one for the west. Those meets will take place May 25-28, with qualifiers advancing to the National Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
