Michigan State hockey beats Wisconsin, wins Big Ten Championship

The Michigan State Spartans are Big Ten Champs!

For the first time in program history, Michigan State Hockey has won a Big Ten regular season championship. The Big Ten sponsored hockey in 2013-14.

The Spartans knocked off the Wisconsin Badgers, 5-2, in the first game of a weekend series to secure a point advantage that is too big for the Badgers to overcome.

Wisconsin opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the game, bringing the crowd into it. MSU got the ship righted quickly, though, when Artyom Levshunov tied the game just five minutes later.

Jeremy Davidson added another marker with just under two minutes to go in the first and the Spartans led 2-1. Wisconsin got one in the second to send the game to the third tied at 2.

For the Spartans, it was Reed Lebster that got the eventual game winner with 7:10 remaining in the third period.

Davidson and Tiernan Shoudy added empty netters to clinch the 5-2 Big Ten championship win.

The Spartans and Badgers will lock up in another game tomorrow night, before the Big Ten Tournament where the Spartans have earned a first round bye.

Michigan State enters the series up two points on Wisconsin, with two games to play inside of the Kohl Center this weekend.

If the Spartans get two points, the two teams will be co-champions. If the Spartans earn three points, or more, they are outright champions. In the event the team’s are co-champions, MSU would earn the 1-seed in the Big Ten Tournament. One point or less, Wisconsin takes home the Big Ten crown.

QUOTES: Tom Izzo talks MSU basketball’s loss to Wisconsin

Tom Izzo was not happy after MSU’s loss to Wisconsin

Michigan State walked into Madison and got drubbed by the buzzsaw that is known as the Wisconsin Badgers. The Spartans dropped the game against the Badgers, 81-66.

Nothing seemed to go right for MSU, from Wisconsin refusing to miss, to offensive struggles, to foul trouble, the Spartans could never find a rhythm in the game.

Tom Izzo, coming to no one’s surprise, was not a happy camper with the Spartans effort in the game and spoke to the media about it after the MSU loss:

Michigan State went on the road on Friday night to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers inside of the Kohl Center. Unfortunately for MSU, the game went any way but planned, dropping the contest, 81-66, running into the buzzsaw that is Wisconsin.

The Badgers jumped on the Spartans early and it never really let up. The Spartans could never cut an early deficit to under 4, and trailed at the half 43-34.

The second half went similar to the first, with the Spartans not being able to cut into the deficit and the Badgers extending their lead.

AJ Hoggard scored 19 points in the contest, while Malik Hall (13 points), Tyson Walker (11 points) and Jaden Akins (10 points) all scored in double figures.

Michigan State will be back in action on Tuesday for a rivalry matchup against Michigan.

Now, ahead of the Spartans Tuesday night clash with Wisconsin, the team has released its availability report and it is Hall that is listed as questionable to play in the game.

Of note in the availability report, Jaxon Kohler is still out with his foot injury.
