Who’s on the move in the latest Big 12 Power Rankings after Week 6?

There wasn’t much movement with just three contests on the Big 12 slate this weekend, but two teams made impressions in their blowout wins.

It was a fascinating slate of Big 12 games that served as a measuring stick for the six teams that played on Saturday. There were just three games, leaving four teams idle for Week 6.

Oklahoma and Texas played one of the all-time classic Red River Showdowns in the 117 game history of the rivalry. TCU blew out Texas Tech under the lights in Lubbock, and Baylor dominated West Virginia in Waco.

The four teams on bye weeks made this week’s power rankings a bit more difficult, but what I landed on was a team on a bye couldn’t move up. For instance, Iowa State didn’t move past Texas this week, because they didn’t play and provide us any evidence that they’re a better team than the Longhorns.

Baylor on the other hand moved up one spot in the power rankings. As things stand, the Bears’ only loss on the season came to the No. 2 team in our Big 12 power rankings, Oklahoma State. Similarly, we’re not punishing Texas for its loss to our No. 1 team in the power rankings.

TCU gets a bump for winning on the road in Lubbock, which is a tough place to play at night.

Though we’re just a few games into the Big 12 schedule, a couple of things have become clear.

Kansas and West Virginia are the two worst teams in the conference. Neither can sustain consistent offense, and Kansas can’t stop anybody.

Texas Tech could join them if it doesn’t find an answer defensively.

Teams one through seven, however, will provide intrigue in Big 12 play this year. The conference looks to have a ton of depth in the top seven this week. It will be fascinating to see how they match up as the season goes along.

247Sports ranks Texas No. 1 in updated Big 12 rankings

Texas’ last two performances have put them atop 247Sports Big 12 power rankings this week.

The Big 12 as a whole is in the midst of what looks to be the most parody we have seen within the conference in over a decade.

Oklahoma, who has had a an iron grip on the top spot in the conference, is looking more and more like we are witnessing a downfall from grace. Iowa State, who many projected to be a national contender, appear to be frauds. Schools like Texas and Baylor are looking to surpass the teams that have been running the show in the Big 12.

The Longhorns are coming off a historic win over Texas Tech that saw them score 70 points, and has convinced many that they are the front runners to win the Big 12.

247Sports posted their updated Big 12 power rankings on Tuesday, and while they may have teams like Baylor too low, they no longer view Oklahoma or Iowa State as the best teams in the conference.

It is interesting that West Virginia is ranked ahead of both Baylor and Oklahoma State, who are undefeated and ranked, whereas the Mountaineers recently lost to Oklahoma and have not shown signs of being consistent enough to be a top three team in the Big 12 yet.

Texas is taking on a solid TCU team this week, and should they win that game, they will not only have a good chance of jumping back into the AP Poll, but will also help solidify themselves as the best team in the Big 12.

Texas lands at No. 2 in 247Sports’ latest Big 12 football power rankings

You may be surprised to see where a few teams landed.

The Big 12 title appears to be up for grabs this season.

The top two preseason teams have not looked as strong as many expected. Oklahoma narrowly escaped Tulane and has been getting poor performances from star quarterback Spencer Rattler, and Iowa State barley beat Northern Iowa prior to suffering a loss against Iowa in Week 2.

Needless to say, the Big 12 looks like it poised for mayhem.

Teams such as Texas, TCU, and Kansas State have what seems to be a window of opportunity to contend for a Big 12 championship. This is something that has been emulated in the most recent 247Sports Big 12 power rankings.

247Sports views Texas, No. 25 Kansas State, and TCU as better squads than Iowa State (who is ranked No. 14 in the nation). The order of these three schools could certainly be adjusted and no one would bat an eye. Iowa State was expected to contend for the College Football Playoff, but after their first two weeks it looks like they may struggle to contend in the Big 12.

Texas landing at No. 2 may be a tad on the high end, given that they just now figured out their quarterback situation, have a glaring offensive line issue, and had their front seven exposed to an unranked Arkansas team. The Longhorns will need to resolve some issues as soon was possible, as their next six games aren’t for the faint of heart.

If Steve Sarkisian and Texas can emulate the performances they displayed against Louisiana and Rice, this team has the talent to contend in the Big 12. If they do not solve the issues we saw in the Arkansas game, then Texas could be free-falling down this list in no time.

Big 12 Power Rankings after week 1 of the season

How does the Big 12 stack up after the first full week of college football action?

The Big 12 got off to a rough start in the first full week of action. Though they finished with a 9-1 record on the weekend, the games were much closer than they should have been. With just two Power Five matchups on the slate, the Big 12 struggled against Group of Five and FCS teams throughout the weekend.

It was a similar start to the season as last year when the Big 12 saw several upsets at the hands of FCS schools. It created a perception that teams like Iowa State and Kansas State weren’t very good, but they bounced back in the following weeks to come up with big wins in the conference.

These teams will likely look better as the season progresses, but it was an unfortunate start for a conference trying to prove it belongs among the Power Five with realignment on the horizon.

Oklahoma sits atop preseason Big 12 power rankings

Oklahoma is expected to wear the Big 12 crown once again in USA TODAY’s preseason Big 12 power rankings

The Oklahoma Sooners have won the Big 12 an unprecedented 14 times since joining the conference in 1996. Of those 14 titles, only one is shared as they split the trophy with Kansas State in 2014.

For many, OU’s hoisting of the championship banner is something they can set their watches to. The Crimson and Cream have brought the title back to Norman each year since 2015. The Sooners have put together formidable squads over these last six years. Teams that have been within reach of a national title more often than not.

Oklahoma is accustomed to needing 45 points each weak to maintain its winning ways (in 2018, it averaged an absurd 59 ppg). However, things began to change last season as defensive coordinator Alex Grinch shored up the defense to allow a respectable 21 ppg.

Just how far could an explosive offense coupled with a competent defense take the Sooners in 2021? USA Today’s Paul Myerburg believes Oklahoma is headed straight past the conference championship and back into national title contention in his Big 12 preseason power rankings.

College Football News releases pre-spring Big 12 rankings

There’s always time to power rank teams in the early stages of the year. Here is how CFN ranked the Big 12 before spring practice begins.

After witnessing most of the Big 12 go through coaching changes throughout the past two seasons, only one team will bring in a new head coach going into 2021. Steve Sarkisian comes over from Alabama in an attempt to restore Texas into the national power it expects to be.

For the other nine programs in the conference, it’s time for the coaches to perform at a high level. Neal Brown, Chris Klineman, Les Miles, and Matt Wells will all be entering year three at their respective schools and Dave Aranda will be going into his second year at Baylor. It will be a decisive year for all five coaches.

As national signing day comes and goes, the next step for teams is beginning spring practice. Of course, there is always time to power rank teams in the early stages of the year. Here is how College Football News ranked the Big 12 before spring practice begins.

Big 12 Football: Way-too-early power rankings for 2021 season

With only one new head coach taking over, the conference as a whole is in a stable place. Here are the way-too-early 2021 power rankings:

The Big 12 conference is coming off of a season where a representative once again did not make the College Football Playoff. Iowa State and Oklahoma were the conference’s two best shots, but multiple losses damaged their hopes.

Had TCU’s bowl game not been canceled, six Big 12 teams would have made the postseason. In the five that did play, all of them won, including two New Year’s Six bowl wins from the Cyclones and the Sooners.

With only one new head coach taking over (Steve Sarkisian), the conference as a whole is in a good and stable place at the moment. Competitive games each week prove how strong it is from the top to the bottom, excluding Kansas.

The 2021 season will be no different, with four teams hoping to stay put atop the rankings and the middle of the pack looking to finally challenge for a Big 12 championship.

Take a look at our way-too-early 2021 power rankings.

Week 11 of the Big 12 season is firmly in the books. Longhorns Wire takes a look at the power rankings for all 10 teams in the conference.

Another Big 12 slate of games now in the books. In the early game it was the Texas Christian Horned Frogs heading to Morgantown, West Virginia. The Mountaineers led this one wire to wire. West Virginia won 24-6 to try and stay with the top teams in the conference. TCU lost their fourth game of the year, all four have come outside the state of Texas. They fell to 3-4 after this game. The afternoon game came in Lubbock where the Texas Tech Red Raiders hosted the Baylor Bears.

After falling behind 23-12 heading into the fourth quarter, the Red Raiders scored 12 unanswered to beat Baylor 24-23. The rough start for Dave Aranda continues after dropping five straight games.
