Angel Reese added another accolade to her collection on Wednesday night.

LSU women’s basketball superstar [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] is adding another accolade to her repertoire.

On Wednesday night, Reese won the ESPY award for Best Breakthrough Athlete. She beat out Caitlin Clark, Brock Purdy and Julio Rodriguez to win the award.

A transfer from Maryland, Reese proved to be a transformational player for LSU this season. She set an NCAA record with 34 double-doubles while leading the Tigers to their first national championship in program history.

She also saw her online following skyrocket and has since become one of the highest-valued college athletes in terms of name, image and likeness in the entire country.

Reese, who was not eligible for the 2023 WNBA draft, will return to Baton Rouge this winter looking to lead the Tigers to another title with what should be an absolutely loaded team.

Pat McAfee ESPYs monologue: Best moments, Twitter reactions

Here are some of the best moments and Twitter reactions from Pat McAfee’s opening monologue at the ESPYs.

Former Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl punter Pat McAfee took the Dolby Theater stage Wednesday night to deliver the opening monologue at the 2023 ESPY Awards.

The 12-minute monologue was done in true McAfee fashion, hitting several jokes across the sports world while simultaneously celebrating the athletes in the room.

Here are the best moments and Twitter reactions from McAfee’s opening monologue:

Former Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl punter Pat McAfee delivered the opening monologue at the 2023 ESPY Awards on Wednesday night.

Though actor and comedian Kevin Hart was originally set to host the annual awards show, the ongoing writer’s strike left the ESPYs without a host for the first time in its history.

In true McAfee fashion, he landed plenty of jokes as he paced across the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. McAfee was only censored once for dropping a forbidden word and most likely will get a nice invoice in the mail from the FCC.

Followers of The Pat McAfee Show will understand several of the topics McAfee joked about. From the disgraced Chiefs fan “ChiefsAHolic” being arrested to an A.J. Hawk urine joke to a Brett Favre lawsuit zinger, McAfee touched it all.

But he also did a great job of celebrating and identifying both men and women athletes across several sports, including some that typically wouldn’t be featured in an opening monologue.

Here’s the full 12-minute monologue from Wednesday night:

More hardware for Caleb Williams, who wins 2023 ESPY Award

Caleb Williams won the ESPY for best college athlete in men’s sports. Zach Edey of Purdue was one of the finalists.

The 2023 ESPY Awards honored athletes who broke records, won championships and dominated their respective sports.

Patrick Mahomes took home one of the night’s biggest awards in Los Angeles: best athlete in a male sport. Also on Wednesday night, Mikaela Shiffrin took home the award for best athlete in a female sport.

The award for best college men’s athlete went to no other than USC Trojan quarterback Caleb Williams.

Best college athlete, men’s sports nominees

— Zach Edey, Purdue Basketball

— Duncan McGuire, Creighton Soccer

— Brennan O’Neill, Duke Lacrosse

— Caleb Williams, USC Football

Williams won.

In his first season at USC, Williams was the best quarterback in college football. He displayed outstanding arm strength, excellent accuracy, poise in the pocket, and elite athleticism. All those traits made him a dangerous dual-threat quarterback last year.

In the 2022 season Williams accumalated a 168.5 QB rating, 42-5 TD-INT ratio, 4,537 pass yards, and 10 rush TDs. He went on the win the Heisman Trophy.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated shared that multiple NFL talent evaluators he spoke with are extremely high on Williams, viewing him as a generational talent. Some have put him on the same tier as Trevor Lawrence and Andrew Luck as prospects.

Let’s see if Williams can repeat by competing for a national title and another Heisman and go back-to-back in 2023.

Patrick Mahomes swept both of his individual ESPY Award nominations on Wednesday night, taking home the title of “Best Male Athlete of the Year” during the ceremony’s second presentation after it was announced that he would win the “Best NFL Player” earlier in the afternoon.

In a category that featured Nikola Jokic, Aaron Judge, and Lionel Messi, the Kansas City Chiefs star emerged victorious after his Super Bowl campaign in 2023 lifted him over the other contenders. Hip-hop artist Quavo and actor Paul Walter Hauser presented the award to Mahomes, and he immediately approached the podium to give his acceptance speech.

“I’ve grown up watching the ESPYS and seeing a lot of great athletes win awards, and to be on this stage winning this award is a tremendous honor,” he told the audience. “But it all wouldn’t be possible without God. So I want to thank him first. I truly believe that it was an incredible season.”

He took time to explain that his road to win the award was not easy, and recounted the aversity that he overcame during the Chiefs’ latest championship campaign with the help of his comrades on Kansas City’s roster.

Said Mahomes: “There are many ups and many downs as well. Thank my teammates and coaches for basically just making me look good, honestly, because, you know, I’m a quarterback; I just got to throw the ball. I let guys like Trav [Travis Kelce] work.So [I] appreciate my teammates, my coaches, and the guys that are here. I want to thank my family. Brittany, Bronze, Sterling.

“I’m glad that all that hard work is paying off. And when I’m not in the building, you’re supporting me and making me the guy that I am, the man that I am. So I want to thank them. And finally, Chiefs Kingdom, I truly believe, is the best fan base in the world, sorted all the athletes out here. Man. I started betting next week. I go back to camp next Tuesday. So this is a great award. But we’re gonna do this thing again. We’ll keep this thing rolling. Appreciate all y’all.”

Mahomes will have to wait to see if he and the Chiefs will win yet another accolade later in the ceremony when the award for “Best Team” is announced.

The Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes are guaranteed to leave Los Angeles as winners tonight.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Mahomes has already secured the victory for “Best NFL Player” at tonight’s ESPY Awards, with the announcement taking place during the network’s afternoon studio show “NFL Live.”

The win is one of the three dominoes on the line tonight for the Chiefs as they will have to wait for the live show to see if they will also take home ‘Best Team’ and Mahomes for ‘Athlete of the Year.’ Mahomes led the NFL in yards (5,250), touchdowns (41) and touchdown percentage (6.3%) in 2022, winning his second league MVP and Super Bowl MVP while leading the Chiefs to their second Lombardi Trophy in four years.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was announced earlier this week as a presenter on tonight’s show and could be there to help celebrate another ESPY victory in the process. Mahomes is also expected to attend, possibly accepting the other award for “Athlete of the Year.”

The ESPY Awards, presented by Capitol One and benefiting the V Foundation, will broadcast tonight at 7:00 p.m. CT on ABC.

Why there’s no ESPYs host in 2023, explained

There’s a good reason for this.

The 2023 ESPYs are here, with a long list of the biggest names in sports nominated for ESPN’s version of the Oscars.

Hopefully, we’ll get some funny moments that will include some athlete roasting like we’ve seen, but you may have noticed there’s no official host (last year, it was Steph Curry) for this year’s ceremony.

There’s a good reason for that. Due to the Writer’s Guild of America strike, the decision was made not to have a host. Makes sense, given that material would have to be written for the host.

There’s your answer. Enjoy the host-less show, should be a fun one!

The full list of nominees for the 2023 ESPYs.

It’s time for yet another edition of ESPN’s sports equivalent of the Oscars: It’s the 2023 ESPYs!

That means lots of funny stuff, some emotional moments and although there’s no host due to the Hollywood writers’ strike, maybe we’ll get some athletes getting roasted like we’ve seen in years past. It should be a good show to enjoy.

So as we get set to see athletes and others looking great on the red carpet before the actual show on Wednesday, July 12, here are all the nominees for the various awards for sports’ best athletes, teams and more from the past year:

The 31st annual ESPY Awards will be another exciting and heavily influenced Kansas City Chiefs-filled show this year.

On Wednesday evening, the Chiefs can win an ESPY award for “Best Team” following their Super Bowl LVII victory. At the same time, Patrick Mahomes can take home victories for “Best Male Athlete” and the “Best NFL Player.” in addition to the nominations, it was announced this week that All-Pro Travis Kelce will present on stage at the show marking another appearance for the Chiefs star.

Kelce has previously presented, participated in skits, and provided backstage commentary during the ESPYs. He continues to add to his busy offseason in the public eye showcasing his entertainment chops. The Pro Bowler has already hosted Saturday Night Live, created a concert series called ‘Kelce Jam,’ conquered the obstacle of throwing a viable ceremonial first pitch at a Major League Baseball game, and won a televised charity golf game alongside Mahomes against two NBA All-Stars.

Donna Kelce is also slated to be a guest at the ESPY Awards after her Super Bowl LVII tour. Patrick Mahomes is also expected to be in attendance, presumably to accept an award.

The ESPY Awards, presented by Capitol One and benefiting the V Foundation, will be broadcast on Wednesday, July 12 at 7:00 p.m. CT on ABC.

Caleb Williams has been nominated for a 2023 ESPY Award

The ESPY Awards are Wednesday, July 12, at 8 Eastern, 5 Pacific, in Los Angeles on ABC.

USC Trojan football signal-caller Caleb Williams is making national headlines once again. This time, Williams has been nominated for an ESPY Award.

Williams, along with three other collegiate athletes, has been nominated for the Best Male College Athlete by ESPN.

The other athletes nominated are Purdue basketball big man and National Player of the Year Zach Edey, Creighton soccer player Duncan McGuire, and Duke Lacrosse player Brennan O’Neil.

Unlike Zach Edey, who did not play especially well in the NCAA Tournament for Purdue, Caleb Williams played a great game in his 2022 season finale for USC. The Trojan offense scored 45 points and was brilliant in the Cotton Bowl. Caleb didn’t lose that game, but we all know that the USC defense capitulated against Tulane. Still, Caleb Williams won the 2022 Heisman Trophy, USC’s eighth of all time. Caleb led USC to the Pac-12 Championship Game and a New Year’s Six bowl, carrying the team on his back in Lincoln Riley’s first season.

Fans were able to vote for their favorite teams and athletes online through Sunday, July 9. The 2023 ESPY Awards are Wednesday, July 12, at 8 p.m. Eastern and 5 p.m. Pacific, live from Los Angeles on ABC.
