Former Ravens FB Ben Mason signs with Los Angeles Chargers

Former Baltimore Ravens fullback Ben Mason signs with Los Angeles Chargers

Another former Baltimore Raven is heading west.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Chargers have signed fullback Ben Mason.

Mason is the fourth player signed by Los Angeles with history in Baltimore, joining running back Gus Edwards, tight end Hayden Hurst, and center Bradley Bozeman. The four will reunite with former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman under new head coach Jim Harbaugh. Mason previously played for Harbaugh at Michigan.

The Ravens drafted Mason in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft despite already having Pro Bowl fullback Patrick Ricard under contract. The Michigan fullback did not make the 53-man roster for Baltimore in his rookie season, signing to the New England Patriots practice squad in September. Following being released by the Patriots, Mason signed to the Chicago Bears practice squad in December.

Mason returned to the Ravens in January of 2022 and spent the next two seasons on the practice squad, appearing in just one regular season game during the 2023 Week 18 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Chargers signed fullback Ben Mason on Tuesday.

Drafted by the Ravens in the fifth-round pick of the 2021 NFL draft, Mason has only logged one career snap.

During his college career at Michigan, Mason played a few positions but he was most effective as a fullback. He scored seven touchdowns in 2018 and was an excellent blocker in the run game.

His familiarity with Greg Roman’s offense and his blocking prowess should make him a good fit for Los Angeles, which will put an emphasis on the running game.

Ravens sign TE Ben Mason to the practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens are signing tight end, full back, Ben Mason to the practice squad

The Ravens are adding a familiar name to the practice squad, signing H-Back Ben Mason before the Christmas night showdown against the 49ers.

Baltimore currently has Patrick Ricard at the fullback position, Isaiah Likely, and Charlie Kolar at the tight end spot.

Baltimore cut Mason from the practice squad at the end of September after the dual-threat spent all of last year and the first three weeks of 2023 with the team.

Mason has not played in an NFL game since being selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

With multiple pass catchers nursing injuries, the Ravens added two wide receivers to the practice squad Tuesday who were with them during training camp and the preseason.

Tarik Black and Dontay Demus Jr. were signed, adding depth to a position after Odell Beckham Jr. (ankle) did not play in Sunday’s loss to the Colts and Rashod Bateman (hamstring) could not finish the game.

Tylan Wallace was placed on injured reserve Monday after suffering a hamstring injury against Indianapolis.

To make room on the practice squad for Black and Demus, the Ravens released offensive guard Kyle Fuller and tight end/fullback Ben Mason.

Several Ravens players return to practice on Friday

Several Ravens players returned to training camp practice on Friday

The Baltimore Ravens are looking to bounce back in 2022 after a 2021 season in which they went through a massive amount of injuries. Many different players were sidelined for different amounts of time, including multiple stars who missed the entire year.

Baltimore has seen multiple players either leave or sit out training camp practices this year due to a multitude of different reasons. On Friday, a few different contributors missed practice, but they also saw several return in fullback Ben Mason, tight end Nick Boyle and outside linebacker Justin Houston and inside linebacker Josh Bynes.

Injuries can be common over the first few weeks of training camp, especially as things ramp up. Football is a physical game, so it’s unsurprising when injuries occur. However, Baltimore is doing multiple things differently during the 2022 offseason in order to prevent ailments as much as possible, with one change being practicing in the afternoon instead of the morning.

Multiple Ravens players leave practice early on Thursday with injuries

Multiple Ravens players left practice early on Thursday

The Baltimore Ravens went through an extremely difficult season in terms of injuries in 2021. They lost many different key contributors for different amounts of time, including having some of their players seasons end before they began.

Baltimore has been relatively healthy throughout training camp so far, but on Thursday multiple Ravens players had to leave practice early in fullback Ben Mason, center Tyler Linderbaum and outside linebacker Vince Biegel. Mason and Linderbaum were able to get off of the field under their own power, while Biegel had to be carted off after not being able to put any weight on his leg.

The Ravens have been experimenting with different things in order to reduce injuries both in training camp and over the course of a long and grueling NFL season after what the organization went through in 2021. Health will be a key for the team in 2022, and hopefully they can keep their roster relatively injury-free this season.

The Baltimore Ravens selected eight players in the 2021 draft as they looked to bring in some fresh young talent for their roster. However, at the conclusion of the year, Baltimore only had six of their draft picks even still on the team, with many of them dealing with injuries.

However, on Friday the team announced that they had signed back one of their players from their 2021 class that they let go in fullback/tight Ben Mason. The rookie was let go during final cut down days, and didn’t return to the team after he was let go.
