We have a new nominee for oddest bowl game sponsorship

We have a new nominee for the oddest name for a bowl game in all of college football after a new sponsor was named for the former Belk Bowl.

Earlier this off-season we got word that the iconic Cheez It Bowl was moving from Arizona to Orlando to take over what was previously known as the Camping World Bowl.  News out on Thursday however takes the crown as the biggest and perhaps grossest college bowl news of 2020.

That’s right, the game formerly known as the Belk Bowl in Charlotte will now be the Duke’s Mayonnaise Bowl.  In conjunction, a game Notre Dame plays in this fall will be have the Duke’s sponsorship attached as well.

When Notre Dame and Wake Forest play in Charlotte in late September, they’ll now be playing in the inaugural Duke’s Mayo Classic.

Man, I can’t wait to see the trophy for that one.

Now I think mayo gets a bit of a bad wrap but some but I’m not going to get on-board with saying I love it, either.  Those tomato and mayo sandwiches look disgusting but if you add a tiny bit of it to a burger you’ve got something.

In my book it’s not quite The Bad Boys Mowers Gasparilla Bowl or The Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl, named for beautiful Elk Grove Village, Illinois, but it’s not far off, either.

The Duke’s Mayonnaise Bowl will feature an ACC team annually with the Big Ten and SEC rotating as the opponent.  The Big Ten will have first dibs in playing the ACC for all of the Mayo this coming bowl season.

Belk Bowl changes sponsorship, now known as Duke’s Mayo Bowl. No really.

The Belk Bowl, which has a tie in with the Big Ten, has a new sponsor and will be known as the Duke’s Mayo Bowl going forward.

There are obviously more important things going on in the world, but we’re here to bring you one news nugget that involves the ever-changing landscape of sponsorships and the naming of bowl games. It’s hard enough to keep up with the tie-ins and eligibility, but keeping up with the revolving door of name changes is not only challenging but often comical.

On that note, we have one such name change to pass along to you, and it involves a bowl that does have a tie in with the Big Ten. The artist — er bowl formerly known as the Belk Bowl will now be named the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Yummy.

The bowl will continue to take place in Charlotte and will matchup teams from the ACC vs. either an SEC or Big Ten squad. The contract has an “expiration date” through 2025 season.

Here’s to hoping this name change and sponsorship deal with Duke’s Mayonnaise doesn’t “spread” those trying to keep track of all the bowls too thin.

The Belk Bowl is now the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and people had so many jokes

Bowl of mayo? Ewwww.

Say goodbye to the game formerly known as the Belk Bowl.

And say hello to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Yes, thinking about a bowl of mayonnaise has got me extremely nauseous, but because Twitter made so many jokes — and good ones, too — about the newly-named bowl game between teams from the ACC and the SEC or the Big Ten, I’m pushing through to share them with you while trying not to think about a pile of mayo.

So here they are, a bunch of tweets about that new bowl name that was revealed with the help of former Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly.

Prediction

Virginia Tech 31, Kentucky 17

Moneyline (ML)

VIRGINIA TECH (-134) was humming along until a loss to Virginia in the regular-season finale. Still, the Hokies are the play here, as Kentucky (+110) is just too one-dimensional. That’s fine against the likes of Vanderbilt or Tennessee-Martin, but it won’t fly against a more seasoned team like the Gobblers.

Against the Spread (ATS)

VIRGINIA TECH (-2.5, -115) is a strong play against Kentucky (+2.5, -106). The Hokies have cashed in five of their past six, and as mentioned, they’re just more balanced. If the Hokies can shut down, or at least limit the likes of Swiss Army Knife Lynn Bowden Jr., who led the team in rushing and receiving yards, they’ll shut down Kentucky and hoist a trophy.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 45.5 (-110) is worth a small-unit play, but don’t get crazy. The Over has dominated for the Hokies in neutral-site games, going 6-2-2 in the past 10, and 7-3-1 in their past 11 as a favorite on a neutral field. The Over is 7-3 in Kentucky’s past 10 against winning teams, and 20-7 in its past 27 non-conference tilts, too.
