Watch: The grossest tradition of all the Bowl Game’s

Eww

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when coaches started getting the Gatorade shower when winning big games, but it has become a tradition across most major sporting events.

What about the grossest tradition, one that Dukes Mayo Bowl can put a claim to. This year’s matchup was a battle of the Carolina’s, North against South, with the Gamecock’s coming out on top this afternoon, 38-21.

The win would lead South Carolina’s head coach Shane Beamer to a room, covered with plastic for what none of us want, a Mayo shower to commemorate the win. Take a look at Beamer “enjoying” himself as a large vat of mayo is dumped over his head.

Georgia injury report ahead of UGA vs Clemson

It’s No. 5 Georgia versus No. 3 Clemson in a huge season opening matchup. Here’s UGA’s injury report for Saturday night.

The epic season-opening showdown between No. 5  Georgia  and No. 3 Clemson is Saturday night. Georgia isn’t it the best shape when it comes to injury, losing multiple starters to minor injuries in fall camp.

Just weeks before the top-five clash, Georgia tight ends Darnell Washington and John Fitzpatrick, receivers Kearis Jackson and Jermaine Burton, defensive back Tykee Smith and center Warren Ericson went down with injuries during fall camp.

It wasn’t like the Bulldogs were at 100% before then. Receiver Dominick Blaylock is still recovering from an ACL tear suffered last year. He was lethal as a true freshman before going down with two straight ACL tears to the same knee. Coach Kirby Smart did confirm Blaylock still had more work to do before taking the field in a press conference earlier this week.

George Pickens suffered the same injury in the spring, and LSU transfer Arik Gilbert is still not with the team due to a personal issue. Two big shots to Georgia’s wideout depth before the opener.

There is good news, however, Fitzpatrick is good to go for Saturday and Jackson, Burton and Ericson have been able to practice the last couple of weeks and will take the field in Charlotte.

Smart also expressed on Tuesday, that Ericson has looked good since coming back.

As far as Washington and Smith, coach Kirby Smart told reporters on Monday that the two are both moving around after undergoing surgery to repair foot injuries a couple of weeks ago. Although we hope we’re wrong, we expect both to miss week-one.

Here’s an updated look at Georgia’s injury report ahead of the matchup with Clemson.

What Clemson media is saying about Georgia ahead of top-5 matchup

It’s Georgia versus Clemson Saturday night in an epic season opener. Here’s what the TIger’s media is saying about the Bulldogs.

It’s No. 5 Georgia versus No. 3 Clemson in Charlotte this Saturday night. It’s more than a top-five matchup for the season opener, though, it’s a chance for two programs at the top of the sport to make a statement.

Georgia possesses one of best rosters in college football, hosting more five-star recruits than any other program in the nation. Can the Bulldogs pull it all together? We’ll get a good idea this weekend.

Here’s what Clemson media is saying about Georgia:

USA TODAY bowl projections call for two ACC playoff teams

Notre Dame and Clemson both make the College Football Playoff? USA TODAY’s latest bowl projections say yes. That and every other ACC pick.

The USA TODAY has released their updated bowl projections after college football’s Week 11 and the good news for ACC fans is that two members of their conference are projected to make the College Football Playoff.

The bad news is that neither of those two ACC teams are projected to win a game as they have neither in the national championship game.

USA TODAY projects the following in regards to the College Football Playoff as of November 17:

Rose Bowl:  2. Ohio State vs. 3. Clemson
Sugar Bowl:  1. Alabama vs. 4. Notre Dame

The projections call for both Alabama and Ohio State to win those games which would certainly set up an intriguing national championship game.

As for the rest of the ACC, here’s what the USA TODAY has shaking out:

Jan. 2 – Orange Bowl: Miami (FL) vs. Florida
Jan. 2 – Gator Bowl:  North Carolina St. vs. Kentucky
Dec. 31 – Sun Bowl: Boston College vs. Washington
Dec. 30 – Duke’s Mayo Bowl: Wake Forest vs. Michigan
Dec. 29 – Cheez-It Bowl: North Carolina vs. Texas
Dec. 29 – Pinstripe Bowl: Virginia vs. Purdue
Dec. 28 – Military Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. Navy
Dec. 26 – Gasparilla Bowl: Louisville vs. Central Florida

Some compelling games here and quick takeaways:

  • Seemingly nobody is giving Notre Dame a chance in the ACC Championship Game against Clemson. I know there was no Trevor Lawrence but even with him that game was going down to the final few possessions.  The Irish are understandably underdogs in that potential rematch but its getting treated like there is simply no chance they can do it a second time against a Clemson team that is great, but certainly has flaws.
  • Miami and Florida brings me flashbacks of the Sugar Bowl a couple decades back when the teams brawled on Bourbon Street their first night in town for the game.
  • The Cheez-It Bowl would lose it’s collective Cheez-It filled mind if it were to get Mack Brown and North Carolina to take on a Texas team that has only disappointed since his exit.
  • If Michigan qualifies for a bowl this year you can bet your bottom dollar I hope it’s the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.  And you can parlay that bottom into me hoping they lose it.

In this strange season Army has actually already accepted an invitation to play in the Dec. 26 Independence Bowl and the projection has them taking on Colorado.

Bowl games are set to get underway the same day most conferences will be playing their championship games.  What an odd twist on an incredibly odd year.

We can promise you that Notre Dame won’t be making that return trip to Charlotte in December.

That is because their first trip to Charlotte scheduled for the final weekend of September against Wake Forest has been moved to the Wake Forest campus in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Based upon the latest from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Safety guidance, it is unlikely fans will be allowed to attend.

This will be Notre Dame’s third visit to Truist Field in program history, having won their first trips in 2011 and 2018.

I’m all for it being at Wake. I know the appeal of playing in NFL venues and the bigness it can bring to a bunch roughly 20 year olds, but in my eyes college football is best when played in college campuses.

Anyway, we can promise you Notre Dame won’t be returning to Charlotte in December because you can’t return if you haven’t yet been somewhere.

That said, again, anything short of an ACC Championship Game appearance will feel like a major letdown for Notre Dame in 2020.

We have a new nominee for oddest bowl game sponsorship

We have a new nominee for the oddest name for a bowl game in all of college football after a new sponsor was named for the former Belk Bowl.

Earlier this off-season we got word that the iconic Cheez It Bowl was moving from Arizona to Orlando to take over what was previously known as the Camping World Bowl.  News out on Thursday however takes the crown as the biggest and perhaps grossest college bowl news of 2020.

That’s right, the game formerly known as the Belk Bowl in Charlotte will now be the Duke’s Mayonnaise Bowl.  In conjunction, a game Notre Dame plays in this fall will be have the Duke’s sponsorship attached as well.

When Notre Dame and Wake Forest play in Charlotte in late September, they’ll now be playing in the inaugural Duke’s Mayo Classic.

Man, I can’t wait to see the trophy for that one.

Now I think mayo gets a bit of a bad wrap but some but I’m not going to get on-board with saying I love it, either.  Those tomato and mayo sandwiches look disgusting but if you add a tiny bit of it to a burger you’ve got something.

In my book it’s not quite The Bad Boys Mowers Gasparilla Bowl or The Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl, named for beautiful Elk Grove Village, Illinois, but it’s not far off, either.

The Duke’s Mayonnaise Bowl will feature an ACC team annually with the Big Ten and SEC rotating as the opponent.  The Big Ten will have first dibs in playing the ACC for all of the Mayo this coming bowl season.
