Browns tryout 6 including TE Jace Sternberger and FB/H Clint Ratkovich

The Browns tried out 6 players today, including 2019 third rounders Jace Sternberger and Kahale Warring, and hybrid back Clint Ratkovich.

The Cleveland Browns continue to look for any sort of churn to the bottom of their roster and practice squad, trying out six players today. Already twice this season, the Browns have signed two players from tryouts to their practice squad. First, it was former Miami Redhawk safety Mike Brown who won a spot, then just this week wide receiver Cyril Grayson worked his way onto the practice squad from a tryout.

Most notably, the Browns tried out two tight ends Jace Sternberger and Kahale Warring, who were both third round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. This comes as the Browns have ruled David Njoku out for a second straight game. Another player of interest is former Northern Illinois versatile fullback Clint Ratkovich, who suffered a devastating injury during a pre-draft workout with the Green Bay Packers in April that led to him going undrafted.

Quarterback Reid Sinnett, linebacker Ron’Dell Carter, and center Beau Benzschawel rounded out the rest of those who tried out. Again, there has been movement on the practice squad the past two times the Browns have held tryouts, so we could see movement again.

Jags sign OL Beau Benzschawel, waive/injured OL Jared Hocker

The Jags have made a roster transaction before the Hall of Fame Game and have signed OL Beau Benzschawel.

Wednesday was a travel day for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but they also made a roster move by signing offensive lineman Beau Benzschawel. To make room for his addition, they waived/injured offensive lineman Jared Hocker.

Benzschawel, 26, is entering his fourth season after going undrafted in 2019 out of Wisconsin. He initially entered the league with the Detroit Lions. He also played for the Houston Texans from 2020-21 and spent the offseason with the Washington Football Team last season. He was cut by them before the formation of their final roster, but spent time on their practice squad afterward.

Benzschawel made 49 consecutive starts with the Badgers and earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2017 and 2018 as a guard. He will join the team as they are set to play in the Hall of Fame Game Thursday against the Las Vegas Raiders in Canton, Ohio. The fourth-year player will wear No. 70 with them.

Washington claims center Beau Benzschawel off waivers

The Washington Football Team added depth to the offensive line on Monday when they claimed center Beau Benzschawel off waivers.

The Washington Football Team added depth to the offensive line on Monday when they claimed center Beau Benzschawel off waivers.

Benzschawel was released by the Houston Texans on Monday.

Benzschawel originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions in 2019. He spent parts of two seasons in Detroit, mostly on the practice squad, before he was released in Oct. 2020.

Benzschawel was signed to Houston’s practice squad on Dec. 9. He was activated to the 53-man roster for Houston’s final game of the 2020 season.

In two NFL seasons, Benzschawel has played in a total of three games.

The 6-foot-6, 300-pound Benzschawel played his college football at Wisconsin where he was an All-American in 2018. Benzschawel went undrafted as there were concerns about his strength and athleticism.

This is a smart low-risk move for Washington. If nothing else, Benzschawel is cut in training camp, or he makes the team as a backup guard. Offensive line coach John Matsko worked wonders with veterans Wes Schweitzer and Cornelius Lucas in 2020.

Perhaps Matsko can get the same production from Benzschawel.

Texans waive G Beau Benzschawel, WR Steven Mitchell

The Houston Texans have waived guard Beau Benzschawel and receiver Steven Mitchell.

The Houston Texans have waived two players as they continue to trim their roster with the NFL draft approaching at the end of April.

The Texans announced Monday they have waived guard Beau Benzschawel and receiver Steven Mitchell.

Benzschawel was active for one game in the 2020 season for the Texans. In the Week 17 finale at NRG Stadium against the Tennessee Titans on Jan. 3, Benzschawel played a total of seven special teams snaps as the Texans lost 41-38 to the Titans.

Mitchell saw more playing time throughout his tenure with Houston from 2018-20 with last year being his most productive season to date. In 2020, Mitchell caught five passes for 60 yards through six games, one of which he started. He played 84 offensive snaps and 18 special teams snaps.

Former coach and general manager Bill O’Brien, who was fired on Oct. 5, 2020, liked Mitchell.

“Stevie’s got a great opportunity to come out, to be on the field and to make plays,” O’Brien told reporters on Aug. 18, 2020. “He’s really doing a good job of taking advantage of those opportunities with some big catches. Again, starting to build the trust between the wide receiver and the quarterback. So far in camp Stevie is doing a good job of capitalizing on those opportunities.”

Mitchell was due $1,525,000 in 2021, and Benzschawel was due $1,675,000 in 2021.

Two former Badgers signed to reserve/future contracts by their NFL teams

Former Wisconsin Badgers Chris Orr and Beau Benzschawel were signed to reserve/future contracts by the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers

Now that the NFL regular season has come to an end and 18 teams have played their final game, we are beginning to see former Wisconsin Badgers put pen to paper and sign contracts for next season.

Two of those names, with more to come as more teams are eliminated from the playoffs, are offensive lineman Beau Benzschawel and inside linebacker Chris Orr—players who signed reserve/future contracts this week with the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers respectively.

The contracts ensure the two players will be part of their team’s offseason rosters and enter training camp with a shot at making the active roster.

Orr and Benzschawel combined to play in four games this season, each spending most of the year on the practice squad.

Their NFL journeys aren’t complete yet, and we’ll monitor their chances to make an active roster next season as the 2021 NFL season begins to approach.

Texans call help from practice squad against the Titans in Week 17

The Houston Texans made a few roster moves as they gear up to play the Tennessee Titans in Week 17 at NRG Stadium.

The Houston Texans called up some players from the practice squad as they prepare to close out their regular season against the Tennessee Titans Sunday at 3:25 p.m. CT at NRG Stadium.

The club placed guard Brent Qvale on injured reserve. The 6-7, 315-pound offensive lineman was knocked out of Week 16 with a concussion in the 37-31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Qvale was still in concussion protocol; his season is over.

The Texans signed receiver Steven Mitchell to the active roster from the practice squad.

As part of the Texans’ standard elevations from the practice squad, Houston promoted guard Beau Benzschawel.

Houston’s COVID-19 replacement on the active roster is center-guard Greg Mancz.

Texans activate OLB Brennan Scarlett’s 21-day window to come off injured reserve

The Houston Texans activated the 21-day window to allow OLB Brennan Scarlett to return. The Texans also signed Beau Benzschawel to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans announced Wednesday they have activated the 21 day window to allow outside linebacker Brennan Scarlett to return from injured reserve.

The Texans placed Scarlett on injured reserve with a fractured forearm after Week 9’s 27-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field. On the season, Scarlett has provided 25 tackles and a quarterback hit in eight games, four of which he has started.

Scarlett’s absence has allowed for youngsters such as Jonathan Greenard and Jacob Martin to get more reps in defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver’s scheme.

Houston also announced they have signed center-guard Beau Benzschawel to the practice squad. Benzschawel is a 2019 undrafted free agent from Wisconsin who spent time with the Detroit Lions from 2019-20, mainly on their practice squad and offseason roster.

Lions sign OL Evan Brown to practice squad, release Beau Benzschawel

Brown played for the Cleveland Browns earlier in 2020

The Detroit Lions made a change to the offensive line contingency on the team’s practice squad on Friday. Detroit signed free agent Evan Brown to the practice squad, days after holding a tryout for the second-year vet.

Brown was most recently with the Cleveland Browns, where he played on special teams in five games earlier this season. He is a natural center but can also play guard. Brown played for the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants in 2019 as an undrafted rookie from SMU.

To make room on the practice squad for Brown, the Lions released guard/center Beau Benzschawel. The second-year undrafted free agent from Wisconsin has now been released from the practice squad twice in 2020.

Joe Dahl downgraded to OUT for Lions Week 9 vs Vikings

The Detroit Lions have downgraded interior offensive lineman Joe Dahl to OUT for their Week 9 game vs the Minnesota Vikings.

The Detroit Lions have downgraded interior offensive lineman Joe Dahl to OUT for their Week 9 game vs the Minnesota Vikings.

Dahl got in a limited practice on Wednesday but was unable to practice on Thursday or Friday and was given a questionable injury designation for Sunday.

With the team traveling to Minnesota on Saturday, the Lions will typically examine their injured players in the morning to see if their health is trending in the right direction. If they are not improving, they will be downgraded, will not travel with the team, and will be left behind in Allen Park in order to speed up their rehabilitation process.

Dahl did not improve enough to make the trip, but Hal Vaitai did, so it’s presumed that the Lions will revert back to the offensive line combination they used the three weeks prior to last week’s game:

Left tackle Left guard Center Right guard Right tackle
Taylor Decker Jonah Jackson Frank Ragnow Hal Vaitai Tyrell Crosby

With Dahl out, the Lions currently have eight active offensive linemen, meaning they can still take advantage of the league’s new rule of expanding their game-day roster from 46- to 48-players. But, with Vaitai still maintaining a questionable label, and Decker missing practice on Wednesday, the team could elevate one of their practice squad offensive linemen — Marcus Martin, Beau Benzschawel, or Dan Skipper —  for insurance.

Lions bring back Beau Benzschawel and Arryn Siposs to the practice squad

Both Benzschawel and Siposs had been on the squad all year prior to being released this week

The boomerang flings back to Detroit for rookie punter Arryn Siposs. Days after being dumped from the Lions’ practice squad, the former Australian football pro is back with the team.

Siposs and offensive lineman Beau Benzschawel were re-signed to the practice squad on Saturday as part of a flurry of roster moves. Both Siposs and Benzschawel had been with the Lions all offseason and on the practice squad all year until their release earlier this week. Neither player signed with another team, so they are immediately available back in Detroit.

To make room for the old standards, the Lions released RB Dalyn Dawkins and TE Matt Sokol from the practice squad. Both were signed earlier in the week.
